The recently released Baar Baar Dekho trailer, starring Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif in lead roles, brings back memories of a Hollywood movie released in 2004. The movie? The Butterfly Effect, starring Ashton Kutcher and Amy Adams. It’s easy to see how the film is adequately desi-fied to suit Indian tastes. There’s a love story at the core of BBD, as is the case in TBE. The reason the protagonist travels back in time is fairly similar in both times. Ashton’s character does it out of love and good intentions for a better life for his friends, one of who he is in love with. Sid’s character’s reasons revolve primarily around Kat’s character, and as more promos emerge, we’re sure his friends will, too.

l While TBE at this point seems to have a far darker storyline (there’s a child pornography angle) in a main character’s past, BBD seems like it’s all about a big fat Indian wedding the groom would rather not want at that point in his life. But darker details could emerge going forward, like it did with Kapoor & Sons, where the trailer did not betray the film’s darker undertones (a death in the family, cheating, et al). Ashton was a fairly young actor when the film was released, as is Sid in BBD. The characters age through the years. One maintains a journal, the other just closes his eyes to time-travel.

l But the biggest reveal would have to be when Kat and Sid walk past each other outside an office building, which if you remember, is TBE’s last scene as well.

However, knowing Bollywood penchant for happy endings, would mean that Kat-Sid might have one, even though Ashton-Amy don’t.
