It was in 1979 that Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh got engaged to be married in January next year
MID-DAY (June 25, 2016)
Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh were one of the most saleable jodis. This jodi had done 11 films together and fallen in love with each other through the making of one of these films. Rishi was dating Neetu but hadn't told his parents. It was during the making of Zahreela Insaan (1974) that the two got closer and continued dating for a few years. In 1979, Rishi's sister Ritu (Nanda) got to know about their relationship and decided to give them a surprise engagement party! Rishi and the rest of Kapoor family were in Delhi for a relative's engagement ceremony.
Rishi and Neetu's Jhootha Kahin Ka had released that Friday and so the cast and crew of the film was also in Delhi. Ritu announced at that very family function that Rishi and Neetu were getting engaged right there! Kapoor reminisces that day with his characteristic loud guffaw, "My sister had told my mother about us, so she had brought a ring for Neetu. But Neetu and her mother were caught unawares so they didn't even have a ring to give me. The producer of Jhootha Kahin Ka, Ravi Tandon, gave his ring which had 'R' inscribed on it. So, that ring became my engagement band! Neetu later made a similar ring and gave it to him. I was taken by surprise because I hadn't even told my parents that I was dating Neetu. But I was happy as we were in a relationship and we had to get engaged."
Next year, in January, the couple got married. Incidentally, the engagement that they had gone to attend broke after a few months. He says, "It was as if we were destined to get engaged that day."
