Back in Mumbai, Sonakshi Sinha remains unfazed by the storm that she has stirred up during her last weekend visit to Nepal. The actress, who toured the Himalayan nation to perform at a charity event organised by the Nepal Army Wives Association in aid of quake victims, drew flak from local media after a senior army general received her at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.
Sonakshi had tweeted that she was “overwhelmed by the welcome given to me by Nepal!” At the event, she grooved to her chartbusters like Saree Ke Fall Sa and Gandi Baat among other tracks. Malaika Arora was also present. Due to the backlash, the Nepal Prime Minister’s office has now demanded an explanation from the Defence Ministry about the reception extended to the Dabangg girl.
Sources close to the actress wonder why locals, especially Nepalese actors, have made such a big deal about her visit. After all, she went there for a cause — to raise funds for quake victims — which is being overlooked.
Says a source, “Since Bollywood stars are a huge draw in Nepal, elaborate security measures were in place for Sonakshi. She flew there following a special invitation from the Army Wives Association, so it was understood that their husbands would be present to receive her. Sonakshi has earlier performed at several events organised either by or for law enforcers where a lot of them are in uniform, but there was no controversy.”
The actress took to Instagram and said, “Thank you Kathmandu for turning up and making this show a HUGE success! Honored to have been a small part of your big cause (sic).” The actress had earlier posted a video of her rehearsing for the show, saying, “Lets dance together for Nepal”.
Meanwhile, on Monday, Nepal army’s Directorate of Public Relations issued a statement: “The Nepal Army Wives Association organised the fundraiser with an aim to support the earthquake victims. Nepal Army, in coordination with other security agencies, extended help for the security of the performers and the audience. It’s obvious that army personnel are in uniform while executing their duty at assigned places.”
Sonakshi and her spokesperson chose not to comment on the story.
