In her half-a-dozen appearances at the Cannes Film Festival, the gorgeous Sonam Kapoor has successfully towed the line between desi and global, often opting for bold choices like sari-gowns and ethnic jewellery. This year, one of her looks stood out in a sea of designer labels - she paired a magnificent Ralph and Russo off-shoulder, sky blue gown with typically Indian gold and pearl jhumkas and a tasteful braid - and was instantly hailed as "Queen Elsa from Frozen".
Speaking to Mirror as she sips on red wine at the French Riviera, Sonam says she's unfazed by both compliments and criticisms. She was trolled on the social media for her first red carpet turn at Cannes this year, in another Ralph and Russo number that featured an expansive cape, as she attended the screening of Marion Cotillard-starrer, Mal De Pieress (From the Land of the Moon). "I think it's important to be yourself and be comfortable. I don't have a particular process. If I feel great in the dress, I know it's the one. As opposed to what people would assume, I don't really think about the remarks at all. I have worn Ralph and Russo designs for all my appearances this year," Sonam says, and adds candidly, "Neither is there any pressure on me, nor do I take myself too seriously."
She found Thailand-born actress Champoo Aarya's look stunning on the red carpet this year. "Blake Lively looked beautiful too," she adds. While to the outside world, the event is all glitz and glamour, Sonam reveals that there's an insane amount of work and madness behind-thes-cenes. "Hair, make up, continuous outfit trials... Lots of effort goes into that one final look."
Did she bump into fellow Indian brand ambassador, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan? Or happen to catch up with the units of Omung Kumar's Sarbjit and Anurag Kashyap's Raman Raghav 2.0, both of which were screened at the festival? "I would have loved to but our appearances were all scheduled at different times," Sonam reveals.
Meanwhile, she did manage to hobnob with Hollywood royalty, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Hudson, Collin Firth, Kylie Jenner, among others, at the lavish Chopard party, and points out that the big Cannes bashes are all about enjoying the food, fashion and the French Riviera. "I've already attended the Chopard party and the amfAR gala, which are the two major highlights of the festival. My sister, Rhea, is the best company to these dos," she says, likening it to a closed-door Great Gatsby bash. "Ah! It's champagne, caviar and everything oh-so-glamorous!"
Sonam who returns to the bay today hasn't signed any projects after her critically acclaimed and loved performance in Ram Madhvani's biopic, Neerja. Buzz is she will be playing one of the leading ladies in sister Rhea's girl-gang drama,Veere Di Wedding . "I can't talk about it at the moment. But an official announcement will be made soon," she promises.
