(Crisp) Movie Review: SPOTLIGHT by FENIL SETA

Spotlight is a gripping investigative film and surely ranks amongst the finest films that have come out in recent times. The subject chosen is powerful enough to make a great story. It is based on a true story about the widespread sex abuse done by Catholic priests in and around Boston. The makers neatly progress the tale and as revelations after revelations are made about the scandal, one is quite taken aback. It becomes difficult to believe that something of this sort happened and most probably, is happening even to this day. Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy’s writing is gripping and ensures that viewers remain engrossed from start to finish. They never titillate or take any formulaic route and it thankfully works. Speaking of performances, each actor plays a well-written character with aplomb. Mark Ruffalo rocks and the manner in which he gets into the skin of his character is seen to be believed. Michael Keaton is quite effortless while Rachel McAdams lends great support. Liev Schreiber is quite cool and centered…just like his character. Stanley Tucci is an actor I really admire as he always leaves a huge mark and Spotlight is no exception. The good news is that Spotlight will be releasing tomorrow in India with NO CUTS! In today’s times when even ‘saala’ gets censored, this is a rare instance and hence, it would be a great idea to see this great piece of cinema in theatres. I have not seen all the Best Picture-nominated films of the Oscars but I really hope Spotlight emerges victorious!
My rating - **** ½ out of 5!
