The 2004 Academy Award
winning Indian-American docu-drama about the children of prostitutes in
Kolkata's red light area, Sonagachi, Born Into Brothels, is being
officially adapted as a film and is set to roll in March. Seema Biswas,
Divya Dutta and Sapna Pabbi have been roped in and will interact with
real-life
prostitutes and their children who were part of the original, written
and directed by Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman. The film, which will
portray their
lives as is today, will be directed by Arup Dutta.
Divya Dutta confirmed the news saying, “Yes, I am playing one of the protagonists. I have never played such a role before so it will be challenging.“
Sapna, who made her Bollywood debut with the horror film, Khamoshiyan, leaves for the City of Joy soon to spend some time with the girl whose life she will be portraying on screen.“She was a part of the documentary and is all grown up now. It's a dark film but also very real and a lovely take on the children of prostitutes who get no respect from society or their own families,“ says Sapna.
