Anupam Kher has adopted a Kashmiri Pandit family in the remote village of Zadroo, Pulwama, in South Kashmir. They were one of the few Pandits who chose to stay on in the Valley after the others fled after militancy started in 1989.
Ashok Kumar Raina works as a daily labourer. It was a struggle to feed the family of five, including three daughters. "We were dependent on relatives in Jammu and Delhi but it wasn't enough. I stayed back as I had no options. My neighbours and Muslim friends have helped me," admits Raina whose new benefactor has promised to take care of the marriage expenses of his eldest daughter.
Kher is determined to ensure that they don't go around begging.
