Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in a still from Tamasha
Box Office India Trade Network

TAMASHA had a decent weekend of 38 crore nett apprx as it grossed 10.75 crore nett on Friday, 13 crore nett on Saturday and 14.25 crore nett on Sunday. It is the seventh best weekend of the year but the film really had to over 40 crore nett. The growth was good on Saturday at around 20% but 30% was what was needed. The weekend trend was fair. ROCKSTAR had notched up a 32 crore nett weeeknd four years back.

TAMASHA performed best in Mysore with collections of 3.25 crore nett plus. The collections in Mysore were similar to East Punjab and Gujarat despite these two being much bigger circuits.

The film will now need a very strong hold on Monday and the normal 50% Friday to Monday drop will not be enough. If the film can hold then the film do well in week two as well because HATE STORY 3 will not really give TAMASHA much competition in the high end multiplexes where TAMASHA is doing well.
-----------------------
TAMASHA dropped on Monday which always looked on the cards as although the weekend was decent it was mainly due to performance at high end multiplexes and they can't sustain a film at the levels TAMASHA was collecting. The first four day business of TAMASHA is as follows.
Friday - 10,75,00,000
Saturday - 13,00,00,000
Sunday - 14,25,00,000
Monday - 5,00,00,000
Total - 43,00,00,000

TAMASHA has done well in Mysore which should do around 6 crore nett business but in other circuits performance is not upto the mark especially North India. The first week business will probably finish at around 55 crore nett if it sees normal weekday trending but the only hope for the film is a 5 crore total again
-----------------------
TAMASHA dropped further on Tuesday when really it needed to match the Monday collections. The collections are down at low levels now. The first five day business of TAMASHA is as follows.
Friday - 10,75,00,000
Saturday - 13,00,00,000
Sunday - 14,25,00,000
Monday - 5,00,00,000
Tuesday - 4,25,00,000
Total - 47,25,00,000

TAMASHA will have a first week in the range of 54-55 crore nett and although HATE STORY 3 will not be competing with the target audience of TAMASHA, the second week will find it tough going as screenings will drop a lot due to these weekday falls.
-----------------------
The collections of TAMASHA dropped after a fair weekend. The drop on Monday was over 50% and the falls continued over the weekdays. The first week collections are 53 crore nett which is the eighth highest first week of 2015. The dropping weekday numbers make it tough for the film despite HATE STORY 3 not being much competition as it holds little appeal where Tamasha has had its best performance.

The best collections were in Mysore which had the fourth highest first week of the year at around 4.75 crore nett. Mumbai went to 18 crore nett plus while Delhi/UP was around 10 crore nett. Delhi /UP should have done much better for this type of film and Delhi/NCR should have been the best performer across India.

The film is another setback for Ranbir Kapoor who is struggling to get the numbers since Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The stardom is intact as talent is there but working with directors like Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Kashyap and Anurag Basu means a struggle at the box office as they have a story telling style which just alienates most of the audience. So whether the story is good or bad, the treatment given to it will mean the sort of numbers expected by the industry from Ranbir will not happen. A few years back they may have been able to get away with it.

But there is a shift in the paradigm of the box office over the last 18 months which makes it even harder for these type of directors unless they make non star low budget films. This slow shifting paradigm will continue over the next few years making it even harder for this sort of cinema to survive unless of course its low budget and comes without the baggage of stars.
-----------------------
TAMASHA grossed 1.50-1.75 crore nett on its eighth day which takes its business to around 54.50 crore nett plus. The business on day eight was limited to the metros and big multiplexes. HATE STORY 3 opened well but did not affect TAMASHA that much as in the theatres where TAMASHA has its best collections, HATE STORY 3 was poor.

There should be good gains on Saturday and Sunday with the weekend going to around 6 crore nett but that is a low second weekend. The film is probably heading for a 65 crore nett final total which is a little less than what the last Ranbir Kapoor/Imtiaz Ali film ROCKSTAR got.

ROCKSTAR had grossed around 68 crore nett in 2011 and even that film had a so so result at the box office. Barring Mysore the film has done poor all over and even Mysore could have been better as this type of film has potential for that circuit.
