Baby arrived around 7 am on Wednesday, weighs four-and-a-half pounds and has been named Adira

On Wednesday, at 10.59 am, Aditya Chopra's younger brother, Uday, tweeted, "IT'S A GIRL!!!!!". A few minutes later, an official press release was issued informing that the filmmaker and his actress wife Rani Mukerji had been blessed with a "healthy and feisty" daughter who was born at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital that morning. The baby has been christened Adira, a combination of both their names, and was described by her delighted mamma as "God's greatest gift".

Reportedly, the baby weighed four-and-a-half pounds at birth and entered the world around 7 am. It was a C-section delivery and both mother and baby are doing fine.

Mirror (September 1) was the first to report that Rani, who had tied the knot with Aditya on April 21, 2014, in an extremely private ceremony in Italy, was in her second trimester and the baby was due in January. Rani's sister-in-law, Jyoti Mukerji, a popular TV actress, accidentally confirmed the news saying, "Yes, Rani is pregnant."

In July, when holidaying in London, the expectant mamma had been spotted by a fan at a spa getting a pre-natal massage, fuelling speculations. They were in the UK for over a month and then took off again in September to a destination unknown with Rani already booked on family time. In November she attended her family's traditional Kali puja very briefly but hasn't been seen in public since.

On November 19, daddy-to-be Aditya Chopra was spotted outside Hinduja Hospital where his wife was admitted following minor complications and advised rest under medical supervision. She chose to continue her stay in the hospital as the baby's room at their Juhu residence was being done up and the doctors didn't think the actress should be exposed to all the dust, dirt and noise in her delicate condition. On Saturday, she was moved to Breach Candy Hospital and the baby was born on December 9, almost a month early.

Baby Adira immediately created a buzz in Bollywood with Parineeti Chopra echoing Uday's words "IT'S A GIRL !!!! So so excited baby Adira is born !!" Aayushmann Khurrana retweeted excited uncle Uday Chopra's post, "Congrats chachu!!!". Riteish Deshmukh and Rishi Kapoor sent their congratulations to the proud parents. Gauri Khan dropped by around 7 pm. More visitors are expected in the coming days while some are waiting for the mamma and baby to come home. The nursery is all done up and ready for Adira. It's going to be a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for the Chopras!

MID-DAY (December 10, 2015)

It wasn't much of a surprise to see Gauri Khan walk into a SoBo hospital soon after Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra were blessed with a baby girl, the couple’s first child. After all, Shah Rukh Khan is the filmmaker’s closest buddy and while the star is busy promoting his next film, Gauri made sure that she was among the first few visitors to call on Bollywood’s newest mommy and the little one, who has been christened Adira — a portmanteau of Aditya and Rani.

In a statement released by Yash Raj Films, Rani said, “Today, life has given us God’s greatest gift with Adira. We thank fans, our friends and well wishers for their unconditional support and blessings. With joy we begin this new chapter in our lives.”

Rani and Aditya got married in April 2014 in a private ceremony in Italy. In the last few months, a great deal of secrecy surrounded the actress’ pregnancy with Rani shunning public appearance.

Aditya’s younger brother and actor Uday Chopra took to Twitter immediately after the delivery to announce: “ITÂ’S A GIRL!!!!!” Congratulatory messages from B-Town folk poured in for the new parents on social media thereafter. Karan Johar shared: “Am an uncle to a beautiful baby girl today!!!!! @ udaychopra !!! Rani and Adi had a baby girl!!” Parineeti Chopra posted: “IT’S A GIRL !!!! So so excited baby Adira is born!!” while Rishi Kapoor said, “Rani and Aditya Chopra become proud parents to a baby girl named Adira. Congratulations!”
