Singer-songwriter-actor Manasi Scott talks to Bombay Times about her forthcoming projects in music and films, her fondness for Varun Dhawan and more.

You are specific about people calling you Manasi and not Mansi.
Manasi has a Bengali origin and it means 'an ideal woman'. It is based on Sharmila Tagore's character in a play. I think you become your name. There's a lot of power in it, so I tell people to call me Manasi. 'Mansi' means pleasing to the heart. (smiles)

You hail from an army background.
I have a strong academic background. My parents are doctors, and both studied at AFMC (Armed Forces Medical College). I have studied software engineering. Initially, I wanted to get into the Air Force but then I got interested in singing. Travelling with my dad on all of his postings made for the best childhood ever. I am an army brat.

How did music and acting happen?
I was always on stage, in school as well as college, singing, acting and dancing. My first band, Darkwater Fixation was formed when we were in junior college in Pune. Amateur theatre followed and then, the move to Mumbai.

Singer, songwriter, actor, performer and anchor. What excites you the most?
I have written, composed and sang the song Khatti Meethi for the film Acid Factory. The best news came later when they decided to put that video in the film as the official item number with me in it. I love musical theatre the most though. That OTT drama with a musical set up is just so magical.

Your son Zephan is a Varun Dhawan fan. How has he changed your life?
Varun is to Zephan (means treasured by God in Hebrew), what Michael Jackson is to me. Zephan is taking up dancing, all thanks to him. My son changes me for the better every day. I have learnt from my son to do some thing for the sheer joy of it. I started composing songs when I was pregnant. I learnt to let go and be happy.

Of all your work and achievements as an artiste, what are you most proud of?
Every single one of them. But to be given the Femina Powerlist Award for my contribution to live entertainment when I have an international dubstep song on the charts abroad and a film all set to release, makes this quite a year.

What's next in terms of music and films?
I have musical collaborations with Mika, Palash Sen, Ishq Bector and Raghav Sachar all ready to go. My movie Bhaag Johnny with Kunal Kemmu releases in September and I had such a blast playing the villain. I would love to pursue this line of work too.
