It was at this time that I was writing Guddu Rangeela (an entertainer about these two ruffian boys, Guddu played by Amit Sadh and Rangeela played by Arshad Warsi) and I decided to incorporate the story of Manoj-Babli's case in my story. The film is not about that case and it is not about honour killing, but in the film, Guddu and Rangeela are seen fighting a case about honour killing that has happened in their family. Arshad's character in the film is based on Manoj's. And so I have even named his wife (played by Shriswara) in the film Babli.“
WHAT IS A KHAP?
Khap as an institution is something that is a good 100/200 years old. It's largely a North Indian tradition, more active in states like Haryana, Western UP and parts of Rajasthan. A khap is like 200 such village panchayats, where each khap represents a particular community. They have historically played a very positive role in society and for instance, would be involved in things like solving matters within a community, so that they would not need to go to a court or looking after the social welfare of people like getting poor girls married off or getting intelligent students scholarships and such like. But this was till they were not politicised and they were purely social institutions, taking care of the community that they came from. Politicians wold initially come and take blessings from the khap leaders but it would not go beyond that. A khap would invite leaders from across political parties and give blessings to all of them. However, in the last 10 to 15 years, there were many wannabe politicians looking for a platform to getting coverage and so, a lot of people started coming to khaps and dictating to them and taking things in their hands. And that made them see the possibility of becoming overnight stars. One of the areas that the khaps started dictating was on subjects like marriage. And now, it has become quite a routine for them to pass judgements on people to be killed or cut or buried if they are outside the defined norms.
