Jacqueline Fernandez has now joined the Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society that works towards protecting elephants in the wild. Speaking about standing up for the cause, she says, “I believe strongly in spreading awareness and educating not only the inhabitants of the village but also the general public of the need to conserve the elephant in the wild. We don’t realise how difficult it is for people in remote villages to balance a sustainable livelihood, but what we also don’t realise is that through decades of development, humans have encroached on elephant habitats and made their livelihoods in these habitats. This has made it difficult for elephants to find new habitats because the fact is there is no new land to move into.” This isn’t the first time the actress has decided to support a cause for the protection of animals. Last year, she had supported PETA and had even visited the BMC office to request a ban on horse-drawn carriages.
