On an accelerated woman-hating spree, the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, a day after it demanded a ban on tight jeans, announced that it was moving court to have item girls declared prostitutes and therefore 'illegal'. “Once the Supreme Court declares them prostitutes, they will obviously be boycotted by society,“ said the unflinching logic of the ABHM general secretary, claiming to be working for women's safety, adding that all item girls and heroines who wear skimpy clothes “are prostitutes“.

The Meerut unit of the group is now compiling video clips of dancing item girls as 'evidence', to be presented to the Supreme Court, that showing women in such clothes leads to 'heinous crimes'.

The actresses doing item songs, obviously, are unimpressed, even if they're getting used to being invoked for every prayer for publicity or morality in the country. Politicians refuse to leave them alone, from Baba Ramdev to Arvind Kejriwal's hecklers, in what amounts to a growing body of evidence that if item girls do wonders for a film's promotions, maybe they also give the neta a hip-swerve in the right di rection (that of TV cameras).
