WILL THE SHAUKEENS BE AS GOOD AS SHAUKEEN?
Shaukeen (1982) was hilarious and a very bold film for its time. Then, it received an adults-only certificate. Its remake The Shaukeens is ready and is all set to release tomorrow. The bold theme isn’t quite shocking now and the humour of the story hopefully would click in today’s times. Lisa Haydon steps into the shoes of Rati Agnihotri and essays a sexy siren of Mauritius. The three ‘shaukeens’ are played by Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor and Piyush Mishra. Mithun Chakraborty’s character has been done away with it and instead, there’s Akshay Kumar who plays himself. But there’s a slight twist: He plays an alcoholic. The film is directed by Abhishek Sharma, whose first directorial debut Tere Bin Laden was loved a lot. Songs haven’t clicked but Manali Trance is slowly picking up.
The film is made on reasonable costs but excitement for the film is limited. A positive response can help the film grow significantly. After all, it has no competition as such and Happy New Year will be a 3-week old film by the time The Shaukeens releases.

RANG RASIYA FINALLY SEES THE LIGHT OF THE DAY!
Ketan Mehta had started working on Rang Rasiya almost 6 years back. But recession struck and few other reasons compelled Ketan Mehta to hold the release of the film. Finally, it’s releasing tomorrow and in many ways this is the right period for the film. It’s a bold and sensual film that would have a much widespread acceptance now than in 2008. Also, its lead actor Randeep Hooda has now become a popular face and this would also benefit the film.
Rang Rasiya is based on the life of the celebrated painter Raja Ravi Verma. The film has toured several film festivals and has been loved for its take on freedom of expression. There are three heroines opposite Randeep – Nandana Sen, Rashaana Shah and Feryna Wazheir. Randeep’s intimate scenes with Nandana have been much talked about since the film’s inception. In fact, Nandana has done a frontal nude scene, probably a first in Indian Cinema. What’s more, the film was passed by the Revising Committee of Censor Board with zero cuts!
Rang Rasiya would surely get thumbs up from viewers but sadly, the excitement for the film is lacking. It will have a poor opening but can grow significantly if response is very nice. The film’s costs are a bit high and it remains to be seen how the makers manage to recover their investment.
