(Crisp) Movie Review: BOYHOOD by FENIL SETA

It was an experience to watch Boyhood at 16th Mumbai Film Festival 2014. As it was a festival screening, there was no interval and yet I am sure nobody got bored or tired even for a moment while watching the 165-minute-long film. The concept of the film is unheard of: it has been shot over 11 years from 2002 to 2013 and shows the growth of a young boy and girl into adulthood. The direction and script is superb and the narrative flows so naturally that it’s difficult to say that it’s been shot over 11 years and not in one go. Hats off to director Richard Linklater, who had already won my heart with the Before Sunrise and its sequels! The child actors - Ellar Coltrane and Lorelei Linklater (Richard’s daughter) – are brilliant while Patricia Arquette who plays their mother shine as well. And Ethan Hawke is damn cool and it was such a pleasure to see him on the big screen for the first time! Here’s hoping Boyhood releases in India and viewers get a chance to see this one-of-its-kind-film!
My rating - **** out of 5!
