The trailer of Sonam Kapoor's latest romcom, Khoobsurat, opened to mixed response online, with some insisting that it is a rip-off of the Amanda Bynes-Colin Firth starrer What A Girl Wants. However, Mirror has discovered another unoriginal, less flattering muse.
The song Sonam is dancing to, Engine ki seeti mein maro man dole, is the straight lift of an Alka Yagnik track composed by Anu Malik for the '90s Jeetendra-Jaya Prada starrer, Maa. That song had a portly Kader Khan wooing Sahila Chaddha, in what looks like an amusement park, to the same tune.
Malik reacted to the recreation with, "I'm glad I did something worthy of a remake."
The film's producer Rhea Kapoor didn't respond to our calls. But her spokesperson told Mirror, "We've brought the rights to the song from the music label." As for accusations of plagiarism, the spokesperson said, "No, the Hollywood film has a completely different storyline.
