As the clock strikes 11 am on Sunday and I sit glued in front of the television, I wait with bated breath. The only thing I am thinking as Aamir Khan enters the set all-smiling is, ‘aaj Khan saab kaunsa bomb fodne waale hai’?! But the third episode of Satyamev Jayate Season 2 is exceptional. Aamir dropped no bombs. Yes, he did enlighten us about a burning topic, but he did in a fun and light-hearted way this time!

We all know that the waste generated can be put to much better use and something better can be done of the mountains of waste at the dumping grounds. What Aamir revealed in the episode stunned one and all. He explained how waste can actually be a source of wealth! There are various ways of doing, some of which were exhibited and what’s more, it can be done at very less costs. But the government and the municipalities as always have kept mum because they have found a way to generate wealth through dumping waste as well. Moroever, if one feels that waste management can’t be adopted in cities where the amount of waste generated per day is enormous, then one is mistaken too as proved by the Warangal model.

Instead of getting inspired by these wonderful people, the government has shockingly gone ahead and set up an incineration plant in South Delhi, where all types of garbage is burned. This has badly impacted nearby residents. What’s more, more such plans are going to be installed in different parts of the country. On the other hand, an excellent idea given by Dr S R Maley gets rejected as the costs are way too low and the authorities won’t be able to earn much through it!

The spotlight was also on ragpickers, who as we all know, don’t get fair treatment but it’s good to see organizations working for their benefit. At the same time, the aam junta too were brought in the hall of shame for our failure to manage waste effectively. In fact, Aamir put forward his point beautifully by asking – if we are so obsessed with bathing and cleaning our house everyday, why is our country not clean then? Even in the finale, while emphasizing the need for every household to separate dry waste from wet, he appealed to the kids by addressing them as ‘soldiers’ and called himself their ‘commander’! He advised his ‘army’ to constantly demand for separation of waste in their household till their demands are not met! This would definitely make an impact as which kid would not like to be a part of ‘Aamir Khan’s army’!

As an unusually peppy and energetic song ended the episode, I couldn’t help but wonder – our country has so many problems. We always feel that since the problems are so enormous, a solution to them would be difficult to achieve and would also drain our finances. However, Satyamev Jayate has proved that nothing is impossible and what’s more, many of our burning issues like scarcity of water, pesticides, Police reforms, waste management etc can also be adhered to, and that too in a way that it won’t burn a hole in the pocket. Only thing is needed the will of the authorities, and also pressure from people. The new government would surely have to address these issues in order to get the satisfaction rating from people.
