Sona Mohapatra claps back at trolls on Kaanta Laga remarks

Vishakha Pandit (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 6, 2025)
Singer Sona Mohapatra has responded to the criticism over her recent remarks on Kaanta Laga music video directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, denying allegations of insensitivity after actor Shefali Jariwala’s death.
Speaking to us, Sona (49) said, “What do the people of India feel about performative grief? It’s insidious self-promotion riding on a pretty performer’s untimely demise — it should upset everyone. These songs and legends are the musical heritage we stand on.”
It all started on Friday, when she shared an Instagram Story about the directors “retiring the song” after Shefali’s passing, writing: “3 legends created Kaanta Laga. Composer, lyricist, and singer: R D Burman, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Lata Mangeshkar... These two only created a smutty video with a 19-year-old. RIP and all for the 42-year-old lady but legacy???”
Several social media users accused Sona of being “insensitive” by refusing to name Shefali. Some also pointed out that Sona had voiced the 2004 remix Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar, which had an equally sensuous video.
However, on Saturday, the singer shared a follow-up post: “Are we okay with our legends fading and getting disconnected from their own creations? Calling yourself the ‘makers’ of Kaanta Laga is okay when you are just the makers of a remix video?”
Shefali Jariwala was fresh, radiant, gave 'Kaanta Laga' its life-Radhika Rao, Vinay Sapru

Director duo Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru remember the Kaanta Laga girl
Komal RJ Panchal, Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; June 29, 2025)
Less than a month ago, actor Shefali Jariwala met her first-ever collaborators, director duo Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, to discuss the possibility of creating something as memorable as their first collaboration — the 2002 Kaanta Laga music video, a remixed version by musician Harry Anand. A night after the actor’s untimely demise, we spoke with them as they walked down the memory lane to remember the ‘Kaanta Laga girl’.
“When we met her just 20 days ago, she told us how proud she was that Kaanta Laga remained iconic even after two decades. She wanted to do something new that could stay memorable for another 20 years,” shared a sombre Sapru. As captivating and vibrant as the video was, it also stirred a huge controversy, with many calling it “too bold”. But Jariwala became an overnight star. “Shefali was fresh, radiant, and gave that song its life,” Rao added.
Recalling how they cast the 19-year-old engineering student for the song, Rao said, “Vinay and I were driving somewhere in Mumbai when we spotted a girl sitting behind her mother on a scooter. As she passed by our car, we both looked at each other and said, ‘She’s perfect! She looks like a doll.’ That’s how we found Shefali. Her look in Kaanta Laga was actually inspired by a Japanese doll. She wasn’t a trained dancer or actor, but she worked incredibly hard to get the steps and look right. She was like family to us — bubbly, chirpy, and full of positive energy. That’s how we’ll always remember her,” Rao smiled.
Filmmaker-writer Farhad Samji, who got acquainted with the late actor much later, shared Rao’s sentiments. Samji directed her in her maiden series, Baby Come Naa (2018). His experience working with Jariwala was so good that he ensured she was part of his next series, Boo: Sabki Fategi (2019), as well.
“She was a very good friend. She was the kind of person who approached life with a positive spirit,” he says, adding that her exuberance was hard to miss. “I read somewhere that she had said, ‘I want to be remembered as the Kaanta Laga girl.’ That was her, living life on the front foot and with an abundance of positivity.”

BOMBAY TIMES (June 29, 2025)
Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, who directed Shefali Jariwala’s Kaanta Laga music video, said, “She was like our baby, like our own child. We mentored her because we believed in her, and she trusted us. This morning, when we woke up to the news that the Kaanta Laga girl is no more, all the memories came flooding back – memories of a life and a journey we started together 22 years ago. She had come to our office just two weeks ago. She said, ‘Let’s make a new plan for life. I’m 40 now, and I want to start something fresh.’ We are shattered, it feels like we’ve lost a member of our own family.”
We didn’t cast Sneha Ullal for her resemblance to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, say Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 12, 2025)
It’s been 20 years since Lucky: No Time for Love hit the big screen. Helmed by filmmaker duo Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru — who last directed Yaariyan 2 (2023) — the romantic drama saw newcomer Sneha Ullal debut opposite actor Salman Khan.
At the time, Sneha’s casting created considerable buzz owing to her resemblance to actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who was previously in a relationship with Salman.
Probe the filmmakers about their decision to cast Sneha, who was last seen in the 2024 short film Bhranti, and they reply, “We were simply looking for a fresh face to play the title role. It was an extensive search, like we did for Mawra Hocane’s character in Sanam Teri Kasam (2016).”
They also reveal that it was Salman’s sister, Arpita Khan, who recommended Sneha. Addressing the actors’ resemblance, the duo tells us, “We didn’t cast Sneha because she looked like Aishwarya ma’am. But it was a goal to find someone like her, because she is the epitome of beauty.”
As for how Lucky came about, Vinay recalls, “We were directing songs when Radhika and I decided we should take the leap into feature films.” And they hit the ground running. “We had worked a lot with Asha Bhosle ji, so she graciously agreed to sing Lucky Lips,” he adds.
Talking about the shoot Radhika shares, “We shot with real soldiers and tanks belonging to the Russian Army. The locals didn’t speak English, so we had about 10 interpreters on set. We’d speak to them and then they would speak to the actors.”
She’s also all praise for the film’s leading man: “If there’s one person who’s consistently been an inspiration for us, it’s Salman. Whether you’re working with him or just spending time off set, you walk away having learnt something valuable.”
----------------------------------------------------------
The soundtrack (featuring singers such as Asha Bhosle and Sonu Nigam) was different and special. We had worked a lot with Asha ji, so she graciously agreed to sing Lucky Lips. We also got the chance to work with talented people such as Adnan Sami, who composed the music.
- Vinay Sapru, Director
I can’t even believe it’s been 20 years! I remember we shot with Russian Army soldiers and tanks. People would measure frozen ice so we could walk on it; it was mesmerizing. The locals didn’t speak English, so we had about 10 interpreters on set who’d speak to the actors.

STK director Vinay Sapru says there’s no clash with producer Deepak Mukut over the film’s sequel
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; February 19, 2025)
With its re-release, director duo Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru’s 2016 film Sanam Teri Kasam (STK) is finally receiving the recognition that eluded it nine years ago. The film, which starred Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra, has garnered attention once again, leading the directors to announce that Sanam Teri Kasam 2 is currently in the works. However, the announcement did not sit well with producer Deepak Mukut, who publicly stated that the film’s intellectual property (IP) rights belong to him and that the duo should have consulted him before making such an announcement.
The directors clarify that there are no hard feelings between the trio. Vinay tells us, “We had written the second part of STK, too, back then. We wanted to go ahead with it, but couldn’t. This (confusion) has been happening because of the [media] interviews.”
He continues, “I want to put it on record once and for all: There will be another story of love and promises that will arrive on V-Day in 2026, but we didn’t announce a film. How can I be so selfish to announce? Deepak is a dear friend; I had dinner with him on Monday night.”
Ask if Deepak would produce the sequel to STK, Vinay confidently responds, “Why do you feel otherwise? We are a team. This journey is for all of us.”
----------------------------------------
“The IP of Sanam Teri Kasam belongs to me since I am its producer. So, the rights to make a sequel or even a prequel or a remake rests with me. As for the directors, I haven’t had any discussion with them.”

We cannot think of a subject unless it has scope for music, as it doesn’t excite us-Radhika Rao, Vinay Sapru

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; October 22, 2023)
Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, who earlier directed films like Lucky: No Time For Love and Sanam Teri Kasam and several music videos, are back to helming a feature film with Yaariyan 2. The duo enjoyed teaming up with Divya Khosla Kumar, Meezaan Jafri and Pearl V Puri in this film about three cousins, their friendship, bond and journey that released on October 20. They talk to us about how the idea for this film was born and how music drives their stories.
With Yaariyan 2, you are taking ahead the franchise that talks about the strong bond of friendship. How did the project come about?
Vinay Sapru: So, we had this script, which focused on what happens to the people when they come to Mumbai from outside the city under various circumstances. For example, some come to the city after marriage, while others come here for education or to pursue their careers. It’s a coming-of-age story of all these characters, with the backdrop of great music. When we narrated this musical to producer Bhushan ji (producer Bhushan Kumar), he said he has a franchise called Yaariyan, which is about friendship and coming-of-age, and this film fits into that mould organically. And that’s how it all began.
For a duo who has directed music videos like Gud Naal Ishq Mitha (1999), Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi (1999) and Vaaste (2019), among others, and several Bollywood numbers like Tere Mast Mast Do Nain (Dabangg, 2010), Dagabaaz Re (Dabangg 2, 2012) music has been an integral part of your movies too. Is that one of the key elements that drives your story?
Radhika Rao: We cannot think of a subject unless it has scope for music, as it doesn’t excite us. We do all the writing with music playing in the background. For us, music is a switch. It keeps us in sync. I don’t know if we will ever make a movie without music, but I am sure we cannot write a movie without music playing in the background. Culturally, we all are very rooted in music. We have grown up on Raj Kapoor films and Yash Chopra films. Over the past decade, music has taken a backseat in Bollywood films. But I am happy that it is coming back with commercial Hindi cinema taking the audience by storm.
It was a role reversal for Divya Khosla Kumar. While the earlier part was directed by her, in the second instalment, she’s playing the leading lady of the movie. Was she emotionally attached to the project as a director, too?
Radhika: The good thing is that, given that she’s directed films in the past, she understands the angst of a director and is very considerate on tough shoot days when we are working for long hours and in bad weather conditions. She was a complete actor in this project, and I don’t recall a single conversation where we discussed direction.
For over two decades, the two of you have been working as partners in the industry. What’s the secret behind your friendship and bond?
Vinay: We did our first project together with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (for the Kinna Sona music video). Since then, we have never looked back. It all falls into place when there’s mutual respect. There are no ego hassles when it comes to our creative ideas. And I think there is a clear demarcation that this is where my turf ends and her turf starts - that is what has kept us going.
There are a lot of misconceptions about my age. I was only 17 when I shot for my debut film-Divya Khosla Kumar

Neha Maheshwri (BOMBAY TIMES; October 19, 2023)
Divya Khosla Kumar, who directed ‘Yaariyan’ (2014) and featured in a couple of films in the last few years, is now excited about ‘Yaariyan 2’, which has her playing the lead along with actors Meezaan Jafri and Pearl V Puri. The film, directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, will be released tomorrow. In a conversation with Bombay Times, she talks about her challenges as an artiste and how she is now focused on her acting career. Excerpts:
‘Yaariyan 2’ is probably the first Hindi film to capture the bond between cousins’
Talking about why she didn’t follow the trend of quickly making a sequel to her successful directorial debut film ‘Yaariyan’, she says, “I don’t take on a project just for the sake of it. The subject has to ignite passion in me. Until directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru presented me with this unique and entertaining story based on yaariyan between three cousins, I hadn’t found a suitable story that could do justice to the brand. ‘Yaariyan 2’ is probably the first Hindi film to capture the bond between cousins on screen.”
‘As an actor, it is crucial for me to trust my director and surrender to his vision’
Divya had complete trust that the director duo would do justice to the project and was never tempted to tell them how to handle the film. She shares, “When I work with a director in the capacity of an actor, it’s crucial for me that I trust their vision, surrender to it, and never question their judgment. The character, Laadli, has been written keeping my real self in mind. The directors know me personally and my goofy and witty nature. So, while my co-actors had to work hard to get into their character, I just had to be myself (smiles). ‘Yaariyan 2’ is important to me because my character is beautifully etched out. The audience will get to see me in a full-fledged role for the first time in a Bollywood film.”
‘At the moment, I am concentrating on acting’
Having dabbled in both acting and direction, what’s closer to her heart? “I am the happiest and creatively alive on a set. Both acting and direction give me a lot of creative satisfaction. However, I must admit that direction is way tougher than acting because one has to manage so much. At the moment, I am concentrating on acting. I also feel it’s a great time for actors with the kind of content that is being generated. Content is king today,” she replies.
‘I have learnt on the job and grown, especially behind the camera’
Divya’s journey in showbiz is marked by long gaps – from her film debut with ‘Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo’ (2004) to getting married and returning to acting with ‘Satyameva Jayate 2’ (2021). “I have been constantly working. It’s just that when you are working behind the camera, it often goes unnoticed. I have learnt on the job and grown, especially behind the camera. I have neither assisted any director nor has anyone been my teacher, guide, or support. After directing ‘Sanam Re', when I decided to get back to acting, I had to start with music videos for industry people to see my work and approach me. That’s how I was cast in ‘Satyameva Jayate 2’.”
‘An actress’ age is always under scrutiny’
Talking about how there is unnecessary focus on an actress’ age, while male actors don’t have to deal with similar scrutiny, she says, “There are a lot of misconceptions about my age. I was only 17 when I shot for my debut film and got married after that. I am 35 now. An actress’ age is always under scrutiny. Most actresses are in their 30s, so why do people create hullabaloo about my age? An actor should be judged for her ability to play a character, be it an 18-year-old or 60-year-old, and I can pull off both.”
People text me saying, 'Neha Kakkar has spoiled Maine Payal Hai Chhankai'-Vivan Bhathena

Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; September 28, 2022)
It was with singer Falguni Pathak’s Maine Payal Hai Chhankai music video that actor Vivan Bhathena made his debut in showbiz in 1999. After the recent war of words between Pathak and Kakkar on the song’s recreation, the actor says that his inbox is flooded with messages from people expressing their disappointment.
“I have been getting messages with people saying, ‘How can Neha do this?’ or ‘She has spoiled the song’. Each generation has its own version of things. You can’t say I will only watch (actors) Michael Keaton’s Batman (1989) or Sean Connery’s Bond films. You can’t be angry at somebody for trying to reinvent it (the song). If she (Kakkar) is doing well and the music is doing well, it is okay. It is a homage to the original song,” the 43-year-old explains.
The Sooryavanshi (2021) actor shares his memories of how he got his big break, and says, “I had gone with a friend who was doing a trial and a casting person asked me if I wanted to do the video. And I was like, ‘Why not?’ It was fate.”
Bhathena is happy that the music video of the 1999 song made such an impact that people still remember it. “Directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru created magic with the song and it was their vision of creating those beautiful small romances. There was a market for it. Now, music videos have taken a very different turn. I am not sure if those cute stories are being told [now],” the actor ends.

Meezaan Jafri to step into Dulquer Salmaan's shoes for Hindi remake of Bangalore Days

Vinay MR Mishra (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 21, 2022)
The spiritual sequel of 2014’s sleeper hit Yaariyan, we have exclusively learnt, is a Hindi remake of the Malayalam film Bangalore Days (2014). Earlier we had reported that Yaariyan’s director Divya Khosla Kumar will be seen acting in the sequel alongside actor Pearl V Puri, who will make his Bollywood debut with the film. The two will play cousins in the remake, which is about three cousins moving into a city together.
Furthermore, we have learnt that actor Meezaan Jafri is on board as one of the primary roles. This is Jafri’s third film after Malaal (2019) and Hungama 2 (2021).
Jafri will step into the shoes of actor Dulquer Salmaan in the Hindi remake. “He plays a biker in the film and has several stunts in the screenplay,” an insider mentions.
Moreover, as per our information, Bengali actor Yash Dasgupta, who has been part of a few Hindi TV shows like Na Aana Is Des Laado, will also mark his Hindi film debut with the movie helmed by Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao.
Dasgupta will be seen as Kumar’s romantic interest in the movie.
“Divya wanted to remake Bangalore Days for a really long time. Yaariyan is all about bonds and camaraderie, so it seemed perfect to have the remake as the sequel. The team has already shot for the first schedule in Shimla. The second schedule is currently on floors in Mumbai,” a source close to the production reveals.
Bangalore Days was one of the highly acclaimed Malayalam films, which was also remade in Tamil in 2016 as Bangalore Naatkal.
We reached out to Kumar, Jafri and Dasgupta for a comment, but none replied till the time of going to press.
Jacqueline Fernandez teams up with Asim Riaz for a music video

Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 27, 2020)
After featuring in the 2016 song, “GF BF”, for which she even lent her voice, Jacqueline Fernandez is returning to the singles club with a folk song which, decades ago, had found its way into a Bollywood film. It is sung by Neha Kakkar and the music video, to be directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, will be shot in Mumbai next month. Produced by Bhushan Kumar, it also features Bigg Boss fame actor-model Asim Riaz, and releases on March 7.“It has been turned into a peppy track through which we will be narrating an engaging story. Shabina Khan, who is choreographing it, has given me some desi steps and traditional moves but at the same time it will be modern, too,” promises Jacqueline, admitting that the song is a little out of her comfort zone, but the concept was too enticing for her to pass up. “Shabina has been helping me perfect my moves and expressions. We have been rehearsing diligently to get every nuance right and I’m really looking forward to working with Asim for the first time. It’s a passion project for me,” exults the actress, who will sport a Boho-chic look in the song.
Excited to collaborate with Jackie again, whom Bhushan describes as a “fabulous dancer”, he promises another chart-topper. “It is a traditional folk song but Tanishk (Bagchi, composer) has modernised it, giving it his own unique twist. I have always enjoyed folk songs and want the younger generations to get familiar with them,” the filmmaker informs.
I am concentrating on acting now-Divya Khosla Kumar

Nishad Neelambaran (HINDUSTAN TIMES; November 30, 2019)
After a break of almost two years, actor, director and producer, Divya Khosla Kumar made a comeback in the music video of Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi. The song, which is a recreation of Falguni Pathak’s ’90s hit, Chudi, has garnered more than 64 million views on YouTube. Divya, who featured in the video, says that it was truly amazing to be part of the recreation of this iconic song. “It is coincidental that it was directors Radhika (Rao) and Vinay (Sapru), who got me into the industry. They had selected me from an audition with over 1,000 girls in a Falguni Pathak video in Delhi. And now that I am beginning with acting again, I am working with them in another Falguni Pathak song,” she says.
Divya, who has directed movies such as Yaariyan (2014) and Sanam Re (2016), says that she is in a completely different frame of mind while acting. She says, “Though I have donned multiple hats, my frame of mind while acting is completely different from my frame of mind while I am directing. As an actor, you have to trust your director and their vision. It is the director who is the captain of the ship and I don’t believe in interfering in that.”
So, was it a conscious decision to stay away from acting for the last two years? Divya says, “It wasn’t a conscious decision. I am a workaholic and I love working in this industry. I am very passionate towards this field. I was getting a lot of offers to direct, but I always felt that I should focus on acting. I was waiting for the right opportunity to come my way. Nikhil Advani, Monisha Advani and Milap Zaveri saw Bulbul (short film that she directed) and they offered me Satyameva Jayate 2. I am very excited to be on board for that project and I hope it won’t be so long a wait further on. And whatever I get, if it’s good, I will take it. I am concentrating on acting now.”
About how things have changed due to digitisation, she says, “I think people only watch songs or movies on digital platforms. Digitisation has changed the rules and it is also good because if anyone wants to show their talent to the world, they can just upload it on these platforms and you never know, it might just get viral. It has made things much easier and it has brought the world closer.”
Divya, who will next be seen opposite John Abraham in Satyameva Jayate 2, says, “I am super excited to be working with him. He completely amazed me with his performance in Batla House.”
Divya Khosla Kumar begins shooting for her next song, Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi

Posted by Fenil Seta

MUMBAI MIRROR (November 9, 2019)
After sharing the poster of her new song, "Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi", a few weeks ago, Divya Khosla Kumar will be shooting for the video at Jogeshwari Station today. What makes it a nostalgic moment for the actress-filmmaker is that she began her career in the hit Falguni Pathak song, "Aiyo Rama" and now she is recreating the magic with another one of the singer's popular numbers.
Interestingly, Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, who are directing the Tanishk Bagchi-recreated track, had first spotted and cast Divya for the Falguni number, "Aiyo Rama". "Radhika ji and Vinay ji had spotted me during my Delhi modeling days and cast me in 'Aiyo Rama'. The song went on to become a chartbuster instantly," says Divya, adding, "'Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi' is one of my favourite 90s tracks. So, when Radhika ji and Vinay ji suggested it as something we can work on, I agreed immediately. It's their idea and I'm very excited about shooting for it."
The recreated version is a single produced by Gulshan Kumar & T-Series, penned by Jaani and sung by Neha Kakkar is completely Radhika and Vinay's concept of how they see Divya, a talented actress, enacting their vision. The actress-filmmaker says, "But as far as the audio goes it’s nowhere similar to the original song; it’s a beautiful recreation, keeping the melody intact, albeit more peppy.” As the video tells a short story, Divya will bring it to life by sporting different avatars.
Point out to her that those who swear by old songs attribute recreations to a lack of originality, and Divya disagrees. She reasons, "There are several songs from our Hindi music industry which are beautiful. Yet many from today's generation have not had a chance to hear them. Recreation is one such way to introduce them to these songs with a fresh tune and flavour that is very today."
Probe her on what makes her confident that Bhushan Kumar's "Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi" will be as popular for future generations as the original was, and Divya states, "The original song will always remain popular. Our version will be well accepted because of its melody, contemporary sound, concept, story and re-enactment."
After filming some portions in Jogeshwari, Divya and the team will move to the heart of the city, South Bombay and also shoot a part in a college campus.
Check out Adnan Sami's rocking look in his acting debut Afghan

Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 28, 2017)
Two years ago, he caught the eye on screen in Bajrangi Bhaijaan as a qawwal in a dargah singing, “Bhar do jholi meri”, his first qawwali, which he consented to only for Salman Khan, his oldest friend in Bollywood. Early next year, Adnan Sami will be seen in the romantic musical-adventure Afghan, not in another special appearance but a full-fledged acting debut. He plays an Afghan musician who, after facing discrimination in his country, comes to India where he finds love in many forms. Directed by Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao, the film rolls in August and is targeting an early 2018 release.
Casually dressed in jeans and a black tee, Adnan reasons that facing the camera for music videos was easy as the songs were close to his heart and he was playing himself. But this time he will be living a character and the only connect is that being a musician with Afghan roots himself, he can empathise with what an artist goes through in the Islamic world, in particular a war-torn country where radical elements believe music to be haraam, a view not endorsed by the Quran.
Adnan, who gave the music for the 2005 Salman-starrer, Lucky: No Time For Love, has been waiting to reunite with its director duo. Afghan was born from their many guftugus about his forefathers. “We belong to the royal family of King Amanullah and still have palaces in Herat, Afghanistan. My great grandfather conquered Kafirastan and renamed it Nuristan. My grandfather was a provincial governor. After my father’s death, I’m the family patriarch now. I’ve never spoken about that part of my life because I didn’t want my family to open any doors for me but carve a niche on my own. Since I took a path no one had tread, they didn’t know which doors to open anyway,” he laughs.
He hasn’t been to Afghanistan in years but plans to shoot there and across India since his film celebrates Indo-Afghan brotherhood. He recalls being invited to an award function in Delhi where all those being honoured as also the audience were Afghans, discredited in their country, embraced by ours.
Adnan himself came to India in 1999 and after years of anxious wait for visas to be renewed, constricted by legal procedures and a little book called passport, he became an Indian citizen on January 1, 2016. “Under a Special Clause the Government of India can grant citizenship to someone for exemplary services in the field of art, science and sport. The clause, in existence since 1955, was applied for the first time in my case. And finally, the country I’d accepted as my aashiyana 17 years ago, woh India jise main qabool tha, became my own. It was a spectacular finale,” he beams, at home in his spacious 13th floor apartment. There is a sense of peace… of sokoon… here which he finds hard to put into words but promises that his children will never be allowed to forget the struggle their father went through to give them things on a platter.
Now that he’s an actor, will music take a back seat? “No, it won’t because it’s second nature to me,” he asserts. “But while I admire jugglers, I can’t multitask. Right now my focus is Afghan. I’m not just acting in it, I also have to compose seven songs for it.”
As you look around the cream and gold living room, your eyes come to rest on a photograph of Amitabh Bachchan and a grossly over-weight Adnan from the “Lift Kara De” days. “It feels like another lifetime. Everyone saw the smiles and the cute teddy bear looks but few knew the hell I was going through behind that happy happy façade because of serious health problems,” he admits.
Equally eye-catching is a grand piano and Adnan reveals that the room which was just a shell when he bought the apartment, was designed around this piano. He was introduced to the instrument as a four-year-old when his diplomat father was transferred to Portugal. They moved into the fully- furnished residence of the ambassador in Lisbon and the little boy discovered a piano in one of the rooms. Despite being forbidden to touch it, it became his toy, and he secretly learnt to play the keys on his own, surprising his father who was trying to play a local song on it one evening and getting the notes wrong, with a perfect recital. Rather than reprimand him, his father encouraged his talent and he was composing his own tunes by the age of nine.
As a teenager, Adnan discovered Hindustani classical music and when he whined about not being taught an instrument like the sitar or the harmonium so he could play this music on it, his father pointed him towards the piano. When he protested saying no one played Indian classical music on a piano, he was told, “You can be the first.”
Sceptical, he started reading up on the subject and learnt that the piano and the santoor belonged to the same musical family. So then he learnt Hindustani classical music from santoor legend Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma and began to play cover versions of classical legends like Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan on the electronic piano. He was declared ‘Keyboard Discovery of the ’90s’ by an American magazine while the Swedish Radio and Television Broadcasting proclaimed him the fastest keyboard player in the world. “For me, it was enough that I can play Hindustani classical music on this piano,” he says, smiling down at his piece de resistance as he sets out on a different musical journey.

Remakes are a common scenario in Bollywood and while most of the inspiration comes from the southern parts of the country or the West, filmmakers also swear by yesteryear blockbusters. If the latest buzz is to be believed, director duo Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru are keen to attempt a contemporary retelling of 1986 cult comedy Chameli Ki Shaadi starring Anil Kapoor and Amrita Singh.
Says a source close to the project, “The story of the film is relevant even in today’s time. Our society still does not approve of inter-caste alliances; many relationships are throttled due to caste and class distinction.
The remake will focus on love in the face of such challenges.”
Sonakshi Sinha is apparently being considered to reprise Singh’s role as Chameli, who is assertive, outspoken and headstrong. “Chameli’s personality has a desi edge and only Sonakshi can play the character to perfection. We are keen to have her on board,” adds the source.
Confirming the story, Sapru said, “Talks are on with Sonakshi with whom we have worked earlier in Dabangg (2010), her debut film. We hope to make an official announcement in another 4-5 days.”

After Ashutosh Gowariker, now Vinay Sapru-Radhika Rao also planning a movie on Snow White

Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 5, 2015)
Mirror had earlier reported (October 14, 2015) that after Mohenjo Daro, his period love story featuring Hrithik Roshan and Pooja Hegde, Ashutosh Gowariker is planning a modern-day take of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Now, Mirror has learnt that Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao are also making a musical, set in the hinterlands of India, and against the backdrop of the brass band culture of the North, based on the Grimm Brothers' classic fairy tale. But while Ashutosh's film is expected to roll towards the end of the year, Vinay and Radhika's Snow White will kickstart in March-April with known names, and is targeting a 2016 release.
The director duo's works, whether it was the Salman Khan-Sneha Ullal-starrer, Lucky: No Time For Love, their music videos or their songs like Dabangg's "Tere Mast Mast Do Nain" have a fairy tale quality to them. That's how the idea of a near faithful adaptation of Snow White came to mind. They promise all the familiar metaphors, from the witch to the poisoned apple, but they have tweaked the original story a bit. "The hunter, who was supposed to kill Snow White in the forest but let her go, is merged with the character of the prince, to become an unlikely hero," informs Vinay.
Radhika also points out that their Snow White is an Indian girl with almond shaped eyes, somewhat dusky complexion and unlike the original, who was quiet and timid, is feisty and temperamental. "Also, the dwarfs are not physically small men but people who live on the fringes of society," she informs, adding that in the original Grimm's fairy tale that was how it was.
Quiz them on Aushtosh making a film on the same subject and Radhika reasons that even in Hollywood there have been instances of two studios coming up with a Snow White at the same time. "No one can lay claims to the story. Anyone can adapt it and every filmmaker will have a different interpretation, like ours is a musical set in the interiors. Maybe Ashu will come before us," she smiles.

Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru
added the ‘Dabangg’ touch to Bollywood superstar Salman Khan with two
popular songs that they shot for the blockbuster. They also created the
glares with heart pop-outs that went on to become popular with the
masses. Next they filmed the tracks for his latest Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.
Now Radhika and Vinay have joined hands once again with one of Salman’s
favourite music composers, Himesh Reshammiya, for producer Deepak
Mukut’s upcoming film, Sanam Teri Kasam.
The producer is launching his banner Jhoom Jhoom, with this movie, which will also introduce two new faces — Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane. Music plays a key role in the film, states Deepak. He says, “And for this, we wanted the best in B-Town. Who better than RadhikaVinay, who have given Salman his beautiful musical Lucky: No Time for Love, to do justice to the music visually and Himesh to compose the songs. It’s a brilliant combination. We have roped in some of the best singers too like Arijit Singh, Ankit Tiwari and Neeti Mohan.”

According to a source, “Vinay and Radhika finished shooting the film in 2011. Producer Bhushan Kumar has apparently decided to shelve the film finally. It was initially to be released on February 22, 2013. The date was changed to April 26, 2013 and then further postponed to September 30 the same year. Finally it was decided that the film would be released on December 30, 2013 as the story unfolded over the new-year weekend. That too was postponed.”
Apparently, the producers wanted to wait it out until the box office outcome of Sunny Deol’s last release Singh Saab The Great was clear. Says the source, “When Singh Saab The Great didn’t perform well, Bhushan decided that releasing the film was financially not feasible and shelved the film.”
I Love NY co-director Vinay Sapru says, “Only the producers can answer when and if our film will be released. I guess every film has its destiny, Radhika and I are heartbroken... Three years of our efforts have gone waste. But I guess one has to move on.”
Bhushan Kumar was unavailable for comment.
