Race begins to select India’s official Oscar entry; The Kerala Story, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Dasara in the list

The pursuit to determine India’s official entry for Oscars 2024 has kicked off, with a slew of films vying for the coveted spot. Notable contenders include Balagam (Telugu), The Kerala Story (Hindi), Zwigato (Hindi) and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (Hindi).
“The Oscar committee has embarked on its meticulous selection process, involving multiple screenings, which commenced yesterday in Chennai, and the eagerly anticipated final announcement is to be unveiled next week,” says a source close to the selection process.
The decision regarding the official entry will rest in the hands of a 17-member jury, presided over by filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli.
Reports indicate that the committee has received an array of submissions, tallying over 22 entries. Among the noteworthy names forwarded to “the Film Federation of India for Oscar consideration are The Storyteller (Hindi), Music School (Hindi), Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway (Hindi), 12th Fail (Hindi), Viduthalai Part 1 (Tamil), Ghoomer (Hindi) and Dasara (Telugu)”, adds the source.
India triumphed at Oscars 2023, clinching two Academy Awards thanks to S S Rajamouli’s RRR and Guneet Monga’s The Elephant Whisperers, and Pan Nalin’s Gujarati masterpiece Chhello Show was chosen as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category.
The source also said, “The list might have additions such as Vaalvi (Marathi), Gadar 2 (Hindi), Ab Toh Sab Bhagwan Bharose (Hindi), and Baap Lyok (Marathi). We have received their application, but are waiting for the fees.”

FIRST RELEASE OF 2023 FLOPS; PATHAAN’S ADVANCE GIVES HOPE; CINEMA LOVER’S DAY TO BOOST FOOTFALLS
Not much was expected from Kuttey, the first major Bollywood release of 2023. Yet, its dismal opening and lack of jump in collections did give a shock. The word of mouth was extremely mixed and moreover, it looked like a niche product. As a result, it’ll collect only around Rs. 3-3.25 crores in Week 1. Though the coming weekend is open, it’ll not be advantageous for the film.
The South films – Varisu and Thunivu – meanwhile did very well though due to the clash, the collections got affected for both. Varisu also saw a release in Hindi and the collections were underwhelming but it's better than that of Kuttey. It is set to collect Rs. 6 crores in Week 1 and its lifetime collections will be around Rs. 10 crores.
Tomorrow, two major films will be released. One is Akhanda’s Hindi version. The original Telugu version was released on December 2, 2021, and emerged as a smashing hit as its word of mouth was supremely positive. However, just like most South dubbed films, it is releasing with very minimal awareness. The hope is that it’ll grow with positive word of mouth and even sustain the Pathaan wave. The first day collections should be around Rs. 50-75 lakhs and might cross the Rs. 1 crore mark. If Hindi audiences also love the film, the film can see a huge jump on Saturday.
The other release is the Hollywood animated film, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. Due to limited films in cinemas, it has got a very wide release. The collections can be strong in certain cities during the weekend.
Meanwhile, the collections on Friday, January 20, are expected to be encouraging as all theatres are celebrating Cinema Lovers Day. As part of the celebrations, prices of all shows would be just Rs. 99. The IMAX tickets are priced in the range of Rs. 199 and Rs. 299. Films like Avatar: The Way Of Water and the Marathi film Ved, starring Riteish Deshmukh, have got maximum bookings followed by Puss In Boots: The Last Wish and the Marathi film Vaalvi.
Lastly, the advance booking of Pathaan has taken a flying start. It has already sold 1 lakh tickets for the opening day. If all goes well, the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer will emerge as one of the biggest openers of all time. We’ll discuss this aspect in detail in the next edition of Bollywood Talk.

(Crisp) Movie Review: VAALVI by FENIL SETA

Vaalvi is a Marathi comic thriller starring Swwapnil Joshi. It is directed by Paresh Mokashi of Harsichandrachi Factory fame. The film starts without wasting any time. There’s no character introduction or anything of the sort. The story begins from the first frame and one discovers the characters as well as the plot as the film progresses. The first half is a bit slow but it’s engaging as the story is quite novel. The twist at the interval point is excellent. Post-interval, the film goes on a high and turns out to be a thoroughly entertaining and mad ride. Madhugandha Kulkarni and Paresh Mokashi have penned a superb script that is unpredictable and also very wacky. Their dialogues enhance the entertainment quotient. Logic, however, takes a backseat but that’s a very minor shortcoming. Speaking of performances, Swwapnil Joshi as always is in top form. Subodh Bhave has a late entry but he rocks the show. Anita Date leaves a huge mark while Shivani Surve is dependable. All in all, Vaalvi shouldn’t be missed!
