Very few films now make money; it’s a rare thing-Adarsh Gourav

Actor Adarsh Gourav reflects on box office trends, shifting audience preferences and prioritising meaningful roles over commercial success in changing theatrical landscape
Vishakha Pandit (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 23, 2026)
At a time when even strong films are struggling to pull audiences to theatres, actor Adarsh Gourav acknowledges the reality without sugarcoating it. His last film, Tu Yaa Main, released in Febraury, may not have delivered at the box office, but he refuses to measure its value by numbers alone.
“It’s one of the metrics of success, but it’s not everything. Of course, it feels nice when a film makes money because very few films now make money; it’s a rare thing,” he says, acknowledging the tough theatrical climate.
Gourav believes the bigger shift lies in evolving audience behaviour: “People had lesser options earlier, and now they have many more. There is a huge shift in theatrical viewing. Audience’s relationship with theatres has completely changed.”
With audiences gravitating towards spectacle-driven films like Dhurandhar (2025), Border 2 and Animal (2023), he notes that smaller films face an uphill battle.
“It’s not that audiences have stopped going to theatres, it’s just that they have a lot more options now. You have to give them stronger reasons to step out. Today, some films receive massive screen counts and visibility, making it even more challenging for smaller films. If they aren’t given a chance, makers will stop experimenting.”
Despite the uncertainty, the 31-year-old remains grounded in his choices. “I don’t feel pressured to chase bigger, more commercial films just because of box office numbers. What matters to me is the quality of work and the roles I’m doing,” he says, adding, “Twenty years from now, I want people to go back and watch my films for what they are… because what’s the point if nobody remembers them?”

WILL THE COURTROOM DRAMA AND LOVE STORY BRING CHEER AT THE BOX OFFICE?
Last week’s releases, O'Romeo and Tu Yaa Main, have underperformed. As predicted last week, O'Romeo opened at Rs. 7.50 crores. It saw a huge jump on Saturday, when it earned Rs. 11 crores. The Valentine’s Day holiday came to its rescue and also, many preferred to see the film on Saturday than Sunday. The crucial India vs Pakistan T20 match was held on the third day and it impacted collections. Usually, Sunday collections are higher than Saturday. But O'Romeo earned Rs. 8.25 crores on its third day.
From Monday, the makers opted for Buy One Get One (BOGO) Ticket offer. The next day, the discounted Tuesday offer was also implemented. The collections on fourth and fifth day, thus, were Rs. 4.25 crores. The first week collections are expected to be around Rs. 42-43 crores. With barely any competition, the film should aim to at least cross the Rs. 60 crore mark.
Meanwhile, Tu Yaa Main collected just Rs. 50 lakhs, which was way below the expectations of Rs. 1 crore-1.50 crore. Like O'Romeo, this film also jumped on Saturday, collecting Rs. 1.35 crore. On Sunday, the collections slipped to Rs. 75 lakhs. On Monday and Tuesday, Tu Yaa Main earned Rs. 40 lakhs and Rs. 45 lakhs respectively. At this rate, the first week collections are expected to be around Rs. 4.50 crores. Hopefully, the film will remain steady from here on but it won’t help much as the collections are so low. Interestingly, the word of mouth is very positive and yet it hasn’t translated into respectable collections.
This week will also see the release of two films. Assi sees the return of Taapsee Pannu in a hard-hitting role. It is directed by Anubhav Sinha; both had collaborated earlier in Mulk and Thappad. The trailer of Assi packs a punch and has caught attention due to its content and dialogues.
The makers came up with an interesting strategy for promotion. Last month, it was revealed that a film named Assi is coming; it had no mention of the makers, cast, director etc. The next poster mentioned that the highest paid crew member on the film is the writer! Its trailer was attached with Border 2 and that’s where viewers came to knew what the film is about and who is involved.
However, Assi seems to be disturbing and for a niche audience. Taapsee-Anubhav’s last film, Thappad, opened at Rs. 2.76 crores. It was one of the last films before the pandemic hit and since then, things have changed for such films. The best-case scenario is that the film opens at Rs. 1-1.25 crore.
The other release of the week is Do Deewane Seher Mein. It stars Siddhant Chaturvedi and Mrunal Thakur in leading roles. It is directed by Ravi Udyawar who made Mom and who also directed Siddhant in Yudhra. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is involved with the film as a producer.
The trailer of Do Deewane Seher Mein is sweet and it looks like a clean, non-toxic love story. However, the hype is limited while the songs haven’t worked. Like Assi, Do Deewane Seher Mein will also open in the range of Rs. 1 crore and Rs. 1.25 crore. It remains to be seen which film manages to do better on the first day.

(Crisp) Movie Review: TU YAA MAIN by FENIL SETA

Tu Yaa Main's first half focuses mainly on the love story. It makes for a nice watch, but also makes viewers restless. After all, they have entered the theatre not just to watch the lovers but also the crocodile. The many songs in the first half also fail to entice, except for the beautifully recreated 'Aankhein Chaar'. Thankfully, things get better from the intermission point. The second half is crazy and a few jumpscares are very well executed by Bejoy Nambiar. Very few Hindi films have scored in this regard and Tu Yaa Main is one of them. The climax is quite nail-biting. Adarsh Gourav gets into the skin of his character of an influencer from Nala Sopara and is quite impressive. Shanaya Kapoor puts up a great act. Parul Gulati (Lyra) is decent in a supporting role. Ansh Vikas Chopra (Fabric) is highly entertaining. Kshitee Jog (Maruti's mother) and Shrikant Yadav (Tavde; cop) leave a huge mark. Rajsi Anant Kinjalaskar (Sonali; Maruti's sister), Amrutha Srinivasan (Tara) and Rajat Kaul (Vikram) are decent. All in all, Tu Yaa Main is the surprise of the season.
My rating - *** ½ out of 5!

WILL O'ROMEO AND TU YAA MAIN MANAGE TO CASH IN ON THE VALENTINE WEEKEND?
The last big film of the season, O'Romeo, will release tomorrow, February 13 and its fate is keenly awaited by the trade and industry. It stars Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri in the leading roles while Avinash Tiwary plays the villain. The other actors in the film are Farida Jalal, Nana Patekar, Tamannaah Bhatia, Disha Patani and Vikrant Massey in a special appearance. It is directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala.
O'Romeo is said to be inspired by the life of Sapna Didi, who fought against the dreaded fugitive gangster, Dawood Ibrahim. The teaser was energetic, while the trailer was intense. The ensemble casting and the association of Vishal Bhardwaj as the director have caught attention.
Sadly, the buzz is limited. None of the songs has worked. Therefore, as it happens now almost every week, viewers have adopted a wait-and-watch strategy. The film is expected to open around Rs. 7-8 crores. Ideally, a big-budget film should open in double digits but possibility of that happening seems remote unless a positive word of mouth spreads quickly. If reports are encouraging, the film will see a jump on Saturday due to Valentine’s Day.
The other release of the week is Tu Yaa Main, starring Adarsh Gourav and Shanaya Kapoor. It is the story of two lovers stuck with a crocodile in a pool. It is directed by Bejoy Nambiar of Shaitaan fame and produced by Aanand L Rai.
The trailer is stylish and the songs are quite funky. Sadly, there’s hardly any hype for the film and this is reflected in the ticket sales. The film will open at Rs. 1-1.50 crores. It needs a strong word of mouth and if that happens, Saturday jump can be huge. This is because the genre is extremely youth friendly, at least in the urban areas.

Directed by Bejoy Nambiar, the psychological thriller will be shot extensively in Mumbai
Yashika Mathur (HINDUSTAN TIMES; May 19, 2025)
Actors Adarsh Gourav and Shanaya Kapoor are all set to begin shooting for Tu Yaa Main, a psychological thriller directed by Bejoy Nambiar. Filming is slated to start in the second week of June. So far, only a teaser — featuring the duo swimming in a lake — has been shot.
Sources reveal that the actors have already kicked off joint reading sessions, which will continue until the end of May. The film will be shot extensively in and around Mumbai, with the schedule expected to wrap by mid-July.
To prep for his role, Adarsh has resumed intense physical training — the same kind he undertook for Kho Gaye Hum Kahaan (2023). Speaking to us about the upcoming shoot, the actor shared, “I’m truly thrilled to start working on this film. It’s a completely different genre from what I’ve done before, and that’s what drew me to the project. Collaborating with Bejoy Nambiar, who has such a distinct cinematic voice, and sharing the screen with Shanaya Kapoor makes this even more special. I can’t wait for audiences to experience what we’re creating.”
In an earlier chat with us, Adarsh also opened up about working with Shanaya for the first time. “She is super chill and fun to work with,” he said, adding, “We’ve only shot the teaser so far, but it has been a good experience.”
Main agar saal mein 2 filmein bhi kar lun, wo mere liye bahut hai-Adarsh Gourav

Yashika Mathur (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 17, 2025)
Despite completing 15 years in Hindi cinema and earning international acclaim with The White Tiger, actor Adarsh Gourav isn’t interested in chasing the typical Bollywood hustle. As he gears up for his Telugu film debut this year, Adarsh admits he’s perfectly content doing just two or three films annually — as long as they excite him.
“I don’t want to work just for the sake of it,” he says. “If something excites me, sure — but you end up spending months investing in a character, so a lot depends on the headspace you’re in.”
At 30, the actor — who also stars in Bejoy Nambiar’s Tu Yaa Main alongside Shanaya Kapoor — believes in leading life with balance and intention.
“Main agar saal mein 2 filmein bhi kar lun, wo mere liye bahut hai. I’m more invested in living life fully and doing things I genuinely enjoy outside of acting. Acting is one of my passions, and I’m extremely grateful for every opportunity I get. But there are many other things that nourish my soul. Even if I don’t work for two or three months, I don’t panic or lose my mind,” he shares candidly.
So what fuels his spirit beyond cinema? “Music, travelling, spending time with my cat and my girlfriend, meeting my parents, hanging out with my brother... I love all of it,” he smiles.
Interestingly, Adarsh’s Telugu debut also marks a return to his roots — his mother tongue is Telugu. But his cinematic curiosity doesn’t stop there. “I had such a great time working on this Telugu film. I really want to work in Malayalam cinema too. I’ve even started picking up some Malayalam, just so I’m ready if an opportunity arises.”
Adarsh Gourav on working with Shanaya Kapoor: She was easy to get along with
On working with Shanaya Kapoor, who’s awaiting the release of her first two films, Adarsh is all praise: “She’s very cool and relaxed. We were mostly just joking about how hot the water looked while we were actually freezing during the shoot!”
And was there any sense of hierarchy on set, given Shanaya is relatively new? “Not at all,” Adarsh says firmly. “For me, there’s no senior or junior. I only worked with her during the announcement video shoot, and it was super chill. She was easy to get along with, and I’m genuinely excited to work with her again.”
