Gully Boy vs Total Dhamaal: A box-office comparison

GULLY BOY and TOTAL DHAMAAL are coming to the end of their runs and the comparison of these two films pretty much tells the fake perception that GULLY BOY has been immensely appreciated and even created a superstar. TOTAL DHAMAAL is also not a hugely appreciated film but the regular Hindi bread and butter film but whichever way you look it as it has been liked more than the so called classic GULLY BOY. Only in India these sort of films like GULLY BOY which have no life after theatrical run (that too mainly in five metros) are called classics.
The reason why these adjectives come up is not because of the film but who makes the film and these makers and the writers generally belong to the same circle so it becomes a classic and then its latched onto and out comes a superstar PR exercise. No matter how bad the director is or how poor the film is for most of audience the picture shown is different. Both GULLY BOY and TOTAL DHAMAAL were released on a similar number of screens with TOTAL DHAMAAL having a little more but GULLY BOY got more screens at higher ticket priced multiplexes. The second week business alone of TOTAL DHAMAAL is almost the total business of GULLY BOY after the first seven days so if GULLY BOY is classic then TOTAL DHAMAAL has to be one of the best films ever made going by how the films have trended over time. The fourth week of TOTAL DHAMAAL being almost three times better than Gully Boy pretty much tells the fact which film has been liked but the opposite fiction will be out there as well.
Both films are HITS but take out the extended weekend and Valentines Day from GULLY BOY and give it to TOTAL DHAMAAL and the gap would be even bigger between the two films. Even in Mumbai circuit where GULLY BOY fared best it has been beaten by TOTAL DHAMAAL in three weeks alone. The funniest thing is that the collections of GULLY BOY have gone down fast after week one but its still called one of the best films ever made in India when in fact its not even the best film of a 2 and a half month old 2019. That title belongs to URI - THE SURGICAL STRIKE.

TOTAL DHAMAAL did had a good first week as it picked up 93 crore nett which is the highest non holiday Ajay Devgn total and the highest non holiday first week for a comedy. Not only was it not a holiday release but there was not even a minor holiday in any day of the week to help it along. Today even a small hold can make a 20-30% difference on that day. The film opened well on most places and then really scored on Sunday with a 25 crore nett total. Thereafter the weekdays have held up well across the board.
The film is a HIT and it remains to be seen if it can be a SUPER HIT. The second Friday will tell where this film can go and if it has chance to hit the 150 crore nett mark. There are two new films releasing this week so there has been a loss of screen time but its pretty certain that the families will come out on Saturday and Sunday again and the film is sure to give some sort competition to the main new release LUKA CHUPPI.
The film has performed strongly all over the country but especially Gujarat/Saurashtra, UP and Central India. The three circuits of Rajasthan/CP Berar/CI have clocked 16 crore nett in week one and in these markets it looks like it can beat the numbers of URI. The first week collections are a few lakhs less than the first week of GULLY BOY but that is because that film had a four day weekend and pulled in 19 crore nett on day one which was Valentines Day

TOTAL DHAMAAL collected 36.50 crore nett in the second week to take its two week total to nearly 129 crore nett. The week on week drop is just 60% which is good for a film in this zone as they tend to be more front loaded but this film has held up very well.
The second week collections are second to URI if we take into account films this year and they are also among the top twenty five of all time. They are the second best ever if we take into account comedy films after GOLMAAL AGAIN which did 46 crore nett plus
The film is being driven by the business in Gujarat/Saurashtra and the Central India markets and the new release LUKA CHUPPI was not much competition in these places as TOTAL DHAMAAL was recording better figures in these areas but Captain Marvel may prove to bigger competition this week.

It is the biggest grosser of 2019 in CP Berar, CI, Rajasthan, Bihar and Gujarat/Saurashtra.

TOTAL DHAMAAL added another solid 6.25 crore nett in week four and now the total stands at around 147 crore nett. The collections will be limited in the fifth week as there are limited screenings due to the release of KESARI. The drop in week four is less than 50%.

TOTAL DHAMAAL should go over the 150 crore nett mark as it collected around 1.20 crore nett in its fourth weekend for a total of 148.50 crore nett. The collections should keep on coming for the film to finish a little over 150 crore nett. The weekend growth was less compared to previous weekends but that could be because of IPL.
