Why Main Vaapas Aaunga is not a 12th Fail

Box Office India Trade Network

MAIN VAAPAS AAUNGA has seen a good run at the box office without really breaking out to more areas outside NCR, Punjab, Mumbai city and Bangalore. NCR and Punjab is down to the regional flavor and other two do well with gentry films. The film is going to end up with similar business to 12TH FAIL (2023) but that film was a HIT and MAIN VAAPAS AAUNGA will not be. These films are basically down to budgets as they never reach much of the audience.

Its actually pretty weird that the writers and media raves and even the industry sees them as the better films but in real world around you, not many have seen or even know about them. This is why these films can be commercial HITS (budget to box office) but never HITS for the public. For commercial hit, it comes down to the budget and the budget of MAIN VAAPAS AAUNGA is three times of 12TH FAIL which is the problem. The budget of the film is more than a SATYAPREM KI KATHA and almost as much as TERI BAATON MEIN AISA ULJHA JIYA and will not do as much business as these films. No doubt even non theatrical will be less than these but that does not come into the equation for theatrical success.

MAIN VAAPAS AAUNGA has done extremely well to get this 47 crore nett mark so far from a 1 crore nett start and this would have looked phenomenal before the pandemic. But post pandemic, we have seen MAHAVATAR NARSIMHA and THE KASHMIR FILES and compared to them, this trend is nothing. Basically due to the budget, the film needed to start at 2-3 crore nett and then find this appreciation from the areas where it has been liked.

Post the pandemic, there have been three of these much raved about films (12TH FAIL, LAAPATAA LADIES, MAIN VAAPAS AAUNGA) and within the industry, you sort of understand now why they are talked about so much as films are watched in a different way from a regular watcher. But its 2026 and you would think the rest, be it media or social media, will be more reflective of the wider society but that's not the case.

For the record 12TH FAIL was a HIT, LAAPATAA LADIES was a FLOP and MAIN VAAPAS AAUNGA may turn out to be AVERAGE.

I wanted a movie like Cocktail 2, especially after Tere Ishk Mein, which was so intense-Kriti Sanon

Kriti Sanon on Cocktail 2: 'I wanted a fun film after the intense Tere Ishk Mein'

Upala KBR (MID-DAY; December 26, 2025)

“Happy, positive, fun,” rattled off Kriti Sanon, describing the mood on the Cocktail 2 set. Earlier this week, the actor wrapped up the shoot of Homi Adajania’s directorial venture, which teams her up with Shahid Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna.

“I wanted a movie like Cocktail 2, especially after Tere Ishk Mein, which was so intense and heavy. I wanted to be in this light, fun, rom-com space. Things fell in place at the right time,” she said, smiling.

For Sanon, Cocktail 2 is a mix of something old and something new. While it reunites her with Shahid Kapoor after Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024), it also marks her first collaboration with Adajania.

Reflecting on working with the director, she said, “Homi has this fun energy and coolness that he brings to his characters and movies. He likes to find his characters. He does not want them to be perfect; he wants them to make mistakes and do things that real people do, and still be cool. It has been an absolute mad ride.”

Even as she looks forward to opening 2026 with the rom-com, Sanon is equally grateful for how 2025 shaped up. She had a sole release in Aanand L Rai’s Tere Ishk Mein, which crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in early December.

“When a film’s critical appreciation is combined with box-office numbers, that is the best thing anyone associated with the film can ask for.”

The movie may be widely debated for its depiction of toxic love, but to Sanon, it will remain special as it gave her Mukti.

Expressing her love for the character, she said, “Mukti has been one of my most layered characters to date. A lot is unspoken; a lot is [implied] between the lines and [through] the eyes. That’s where the character can come across as grey. But the fact that she is flawed makes her relatable. While shooting, Aanand sir told me, ‘My story lies in Mukti’s conflict and dilemma’.”

‘Cocktail 2’ reunites Kriti Sanon with Shahid Kapoor after ‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’. “It was amazing working with Shahid, since I was a human being this time,” joked Sanon, who played a robot in their first outing.

Top 25 films of 2024; only 5 hits in the year and 6 films crossed the 100 cr mark

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Stree 2 are horror comedies
Box Office India Trade Network

The box office results in 2024 were pretty much a disaster as the the top 25 films accumulated around 2250 crore nett when the same was done in 2019 by just 12 films. Also, in 2019, there was no mega grosser like STREE 2 which is contributing 25% of the collections of the top twenty five films.

It is a dire strait of affairs and at the moment, there does not seem a way out with satellite and digital markets crashing. On top of it, the films are generally not getting the desired box office results which is resulting in the production sector practically at a stand still. Only the box office can turnaround the satellite and digital markets on which the industry is so dependent. Even when a film does well, it does not help the scenario much as generally films are doing far below what is expected of them.

There were four films to get to the 200 crore nett mark but for the likes of SINGHAM AGAIN and FIGHTER, these are mediocre totals as these two were the biggest original Hindi films of the year. SINGHAM AGAIN got there mainly due to Diwali in Mumbai circuit and FIGHTER got some decent numbers in South but faced mass rejection in Hindi circuits. Today, 200 crore is just around 1.25 crore footfalls which is not much of an ask from the bigger films.

The stand outs were STREE 2 and MUNJYA with support from BHOOL BHULAIYAA 3, SHAITAAN and ARTICLE 370. Hence, there were just five HITS in the whole year from the Hindi film industry and this does not look like getting better anytime soon.

The top twenty five films of 2024 are as follows.
1. Stree 2 - 5,79,61,00,000
2. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 - 2,50,71,00,000
3. Singham Again - 2,38,46,00,000

25. Sarfira - 23,55,50,000

Half Yearly Classification 2024: Kalki 2898 AD and Munjya are the biggest hits of the year

Kalki 2898 AD to Fighter, Deepika Padukone’s first looks WOW the audiences
Box Office India Trade Network

The box office has been a struggle in 2024 and there has been no big BLOCKBUSTER in the first half of the year. The last month in the first half proved to be good with the two biggest HITS of the year (MUNJYA and KALKI 2898 AD) coming in this month.

KALKI 2898 AD is the biggest HIT of the first half and it could have been even bigger if the mass circuits continued how they started as then the film could have been looking at the 300 crore nett mark or thereabouts. But post the weeeknd collections started to drop in B and C centres and single screens. However, the bigger centres have sustained extremely well.

MUNJYA is the sleeper HIT of the year driven by BLOCKBUSTER business in Maharashtra. The film will finish up with business of around 100 crore nett which would be unthinkable before release although the trailer was decent due to the creature. The film is the biggest original Hindi film of the year so far.

SRIKANTH was also another surprise winner in the second quarter which took full benefit of the open run in May and had a solid sustained run for weeks. SHAITAAN and ARTICLE 370 were the HIT films of the first quarter while TERI BAATON MEIN AISA ULJHA JIYA and CREW also did well.

The second half is likely to see a BLOCKBUSTER with PUSHPA 2 - THE RULE but it is a film from the South and the Hindi film industry will also need to deliver one or two big HITS just to build confidence. If that doesn't happen, it will be pretty much a disaster year.

The half yearly classification for 2024 is as follows.

Mumbai circuit gets back on track; Fighter collects better than Dunki

Madgaon Express vs Swatantrya Veer Savarkar box office collection day 1: Kunal Kemmu, Randeep Hooda's films open decent
Box Office India Trade Network

The Mumbai circuit has seen poor returns post the pandemic but has seen a good upturn this year driven by the major centres in Maharashtra. The Thane belt was doing well since cinema returned in 2021 but this year has seen Mumbai city and Pune also start recording some good numbers.

The Mumbai and Delhi/UP circuit had got pretty similar in the 21-23 period for films in a certain zone. It is likely that if CREW and TERI BAATON MEIN AISA ULJHA JIYA came in 2022, they would not have got these numbers in Mumbai circuit and numbers will be closer to the Delhi/UP numbers.

The 60 crore nett plus number of the biggest grosser FIGHTER is not great but despite being an action film, it has beaten DUNKI which has a genre is better for Mumbai circuit and that too directed by Rajkumar Hirani whose films score heavy in Mumbai circuit due to humour element.

Films like MADGAON EXPRESS and SWATANTRYA VEER SAVARKAR are actually HIT films in Mumbai circuit though they met with a horrible fate outside the circuit. ARTICLE 370 was the standout in Mumbai this year though other circuits again were not as good. This would also have been tough a year or two back.

This circuit getting better numbers is the only good news in the crisis facing the film industry and its coming with the Gujarat side not really doing well. No film has done well in Gujarat this year and when both Maharashtra and Gujarat fire, it makes a huge difference.

The top ten films of 2024 in Mumbai circuit are as follows
1. Fighter - 62,04,00,000
2. Shaitaan - 46,64,00,000 (8 weeks)
3. Article 370 - 32,40,00,000 (10 weeks)
4. Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya - 27,28,50,000
5. Crew - 25,15,00,000 (5 Weeks)
6. Madgaon Express - 18,60,00,000 (6 weeks)
7. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan -  17,65,00,000 (3 weeks)
8. Swatantrya Veer Savarkar - 16,80,00,000 (6 weeks)
9. Maidaan - 15,75,00,000 (3 weeks)
10. Laapataa Ladies - 6,15,00,000 (9 weeks)

After a record 2023, box-office kitty may decline this year

‘After a Record 2023, Box-office Kitty May Decline This Year’

Gross collections to fall 15% based on data from first three months of this year: Ormax Media
Javed Farooqui (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; April 20, 2024)

Gross movie box office collections for 2024 in India are projected to drop 15% to Rs. 10,360 crore on the basis of data from the first three months of the year, following a record high in 2023, research firm Ormax Media said in its latest box-office report. The Indian box-office collection reached an all-time high of Rs. 12,226 crore in 2023, registering a 15% growth over 2022. The previous box office record was Rs. 10,948 crore in 2019.

Hindi films had a 36% share of the box-office collection, followed by Telugu and Malayalam films with 23% and 16% shares, respectively. Both Hollywood and Tamil films had a 9% share of the box-office collection. The cumulative box-office collection registered 7% year-on-year growth to touch Rs. 2,590 crore in Q1 2024, despite a lacklustre performance in February. Seven films earned more than Rs. 100 crore at the box-office during the quarter.

"March has proven to be a healthy month for the domestic box-office with collections totalling Rs. 971 crore. The diverse lineup of films across languages includes Shaitaan, leading the pack with Rs. 173 crore," said Sanket Kulkarni, head of business development (theatrical) at Ormax Media.

He added Malayalam cinema continues its remarkable streak with Aadujeevitham - The Goat Life joining the ranks of successful films, bringing the total collections for Malayalam cinema to Rs. 405 crore, constituting 71% of the entire Malayalam box office in 2023.

"The net box-office collections have dropped by 20% to Rs. 900 crore in Q1 2024 compared to the same quarter last year. The second quarter is also looking unimpressive, with no major releases planned for May. With setbacks in two back-to-back quarters, we have large recoveries to make in the last two quarters of 2024," says film business expert Girish Johar.

In Q1, Fighter (Hindi) and Hanuman (Telugu) had the highest box office collections of Rs. 243 crore and Rs. 241 crore, respectively. Both Manjummel Boys (Malayalam) and Shaitaan (Hindi) had collections of Rs. 173 crore

Guntur Kaaram (Tamil), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (Hollywood), and Aadujeevitham-The Goat Life (Malayalam) collected Rs. 142 crore, Rs. 129 crore, and Rs. 102 crore, respectively. During the quarter, March saw the highest monthly box-office collections of Rs. 971 crore on the back of strong performances by Shaitaan, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Aadujeevitham.

In January, the box-office collections stood at Rs. 934 crore, with Fighter, Hanuman, and Guntur Kaaram dominating the list. February saw a modest box-office collection of Rs. 685 crore with just two films, Manjummel Boys and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, attaining receipts of over Rs. 100 crore.

Intimacy experts are bringing comfort to film shoots

INTIMACY EXPERTS ARE BRINGING COMFORT TO FILM SHOOTS

Kate Winslet’s comment highlights crucial role of intimacy coordinators; in Bollywood, more directors are using their services
Natasha Coutinho (BOMBAY TIMES; April 12, 2024)

Most directors will tell you how the filming of an intimate scene is among the most delicate parts of a shoot, as it requires comfort and trust between actor and director.

Over the past few years, Bollywood has been increasingly roping in intimacy coordinators based on the needs of a project. The Shahid Kapoor-Kriti Sanon starrer Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, which released recently, had multiple intimate scenes, one of which was trimmed by the CBFC.

Director Amit Joshi, who shared credits with Aradhana Sah, told us: “It’s important for actors and directors to build trust before the filming begins. Scenes are discussed in detail in advance so that actors can state their reservations, if any. We ensured our actors were comfortable. Today, even actors understand the creative process.”

We spoke to intimacy coordinators, directors, and actors to understand the challenges that intimate scenes pose and how those are overcome during the shoot.

WHAT IS A NUDITY RIDER?
The actors sign a contract document called the nudity rider which details the intimate scenes and the fact that the actor has agreed to shoot them

HOW ARE INTIMATE SCENES SHOT?
- Knowing the script: Understanding what kind of intimacy scenes — kissing scenes, disrobing, simulated sex — the script needs. Workshops are conducted to make the actors feel comfortable with each other
- Discussions with the director: The coordinators discuss with the director what they are looking to portray
- Detailing and checklist: The scene is finalized after thrashing out the minute details, such as where the actor will place his hands while shooting a kissing scene.

(Inputs by Akshay Muraka, intimacy choreographer)

At times, just a conversation with the actors is enough: Coordinator Aastha Khanna
“I was working as Shakun Batra’s assistant prepping for Gehraiyaan when I joined (Hollywood intimacy coordinator) Amanda Blumenthal’s training programme. This helped when we were shooting the intimate scenes in the film. In web series such as Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo, and Four More Shots Please! (S3), collaborating closely with directors has given me the freedom to push artistic boundaries. At times, the actors have already figured out what works for them. So, just a conversation is enough to make them understand how the scene will work.”

Rehearsals for intimate scenes play an important role, says actress Shilpa Shukla
“During my first few films like Khamosh Pani and BA Pass, we would improvise intimate scenes on set. As an actor, my concern with intimate scenes is to create the right emotions. I have always been at ease with these scenes. I played a lesbian character in Four More Shots Please! (S3). Rehearsals for intimate scenes play an important role.”

If a kissing sequence is happening, they say how much you should kiss, and where to refrain
- Kartik Aaryan

I have never had an intimacy coordinator but we absolutely need it. I was once told to do something and I did because I agreed with the vision. I didn't even thing about the fact that how it was done was wrong

INTIMACY EXPERTS ARE BRINGING COMFORT TO FILM SHOOTS

Fenil's Bollywood Talk # 824

2024'S FIRST QUARTER ENDS ON A HAPPY NOTE

The first three months of 2024 are over and overall, it has been satisfactory though it could have been better. 2023's first quarter saw a Hindi film crossing the Rs. 500 crore mark for the first time with Pathaan. Most of the other films in the first three months last year didn't do well. Yet, the blockbuster numbers of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer spread cheer in the industry.

2024's first quarter, meanwhile, saw just one film barely crossing the Rs. 200 crore mark - Fighter. It was expected to do more than Rs. 300 crores, looking at the word of mouth. The way it dropped on the weekdays in the first week, it seemed like it might not even reach Rs. 175 crores in its lifetime. Thankfully, it held well in the subsequent weeks.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, meanwhile, was a surprise hit. The reviews were mixed. However, the audience took to the film and it ended up collecting more than Rs. 80 crores. Article 370 will also end up with collections in the same range.

Shaitaan, on the other hand, was a rare horror film starring A-listers. It had a superb opening and maintained very well. It is expected to end its run with collections amounting to Rs. 145-150 crores.

Crew, which was released last Friday, had an impressive opening and if all goes well, it will have a lifetime in the range of Rs. 75 and 90 crores.

Another success, albeit a small one, was Laapataa Ladies. Thanks to outstanding word of mouth and the association of Aamir Khan, it slowly attracted a section of the audience. It'll end with Rs. 15 crore collections, which was unthinkable in its first week.

A dubbed version and Hollywood flicks also saw some success. Hanuman was released with low expectations and went on to collect Rs. 50 crores in Hindi. Kung Fu Panda 4 will accumulate nearly Rs. 35 crores or even more. Last week's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire can cross the Rs. 100 crore mark.

And like any other quarter, there were some disappointments as well. Merry Christmas, Main Atal Hoon, Crakk, Dange, Bastar, Yodha and Swatantrya Veer Savarkar failed at the box office. Madgaon Express got positive reports but has majorly worked only in Maharashtra.

All eyes are now on the second quarter, especially the two big Eid releases - Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Maidaan. Since these films will release on Wednesday, April 10, this Friday will see the release of small films. Dukaan is the biggest of them all but doesn't stand a chance due to negligible hype.

The film that has some chance is the Hollywood horror flick, The First Omen. It is a prequel to the 1976 classic, The Omen. Hollywood horror films often surprise though they are released without noise. If The First Omen turns out to be a great entertainer, it will retain shows even after the release of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Maidaan.

Experts feel 2024's first quarter was average

2024’S ‘AVERAGE’ FIRST QUARTER

As we wrap up the first quarter of 2024, here is a look at Bollywood’s report card as shared by industry experts
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 2, 2024)

Four months into 2024, the Hindi film industry has been on a bumpy ride. Fighter, starring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone, was expected to ring in the year with eye-popping box-office numbers, but slowly inched towards the Rs. 200 crore mark. On the other hand, films like Crakk, Yodha, All India Rank and Kuch Khattaa Ho Jaay left us wanting. In comparison, 2023 was a blockbuster one with Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Pathaan setting the tone for the rest of the year.

The year “hasn’t begun well” agrees trade analyst Taran Adarsh, adding, “We didn’t have a Pathaan kind of film, a Rs. 500 crore grosser, or even a film that touched Rs. 50 crore on day one. Fighter was a well-made film, but it didn’t live up to the expectations.”

DEARTH OF GOOD FILMS?
Films that took the industry by surprise with their performances were genre benders like actors Ajay Devgn’s Shaitaan, Yami Gautam Dhar’s Article 370 and Shahid Kapoor’s Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya. Their box-office collections show that they did exceedingly well.

Devang Sampat, Managing Director, Cinepolis India, remarks, “2024’s first quarter has been average, with no major hits; films like Shaitaan worked. I feel 2023’s first quarter was much better and a hit like Pathaan is still awaited. There are good titles coming up in 2024, which are a mix of Bollywood biggies and those from the south.”

Aditya Datt, director of the actioner Crakk, is proud of his film. But with “disappointing” footfalls in cinema halls, he is ready to move on. “Response to the film’s new age idea and action was amazing,” he says, as he’s feeling “optimistic” for its OTT debut. “The magic we crafted will more eyes watching and appreciating it.”

HIGH EXPECTATIONS
Another film which was praised by critics, had a big star cast, but still underperformed at the box office was Merry Christmas, featuring actors Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi. Producer Ramesh Taurani who bankrolled the film, elaborates, “We were expecting more in collections. Nevertheless, it’s okay, things happen. We did get a lot of praise and critical acclaim.”

HIGHEST GROSSERS of ’24 till NOW (All India collections according to trade estimates)
Fighter- Rs. 199 crore
Shaitaan- Rs. 137 crore
Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya- Rs. 81 crore
Article 370- Rs. 72 crore
Crew- Rs. 41 crore (still running in theatres)

My Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya character lacked emotions, so I didn’t expect the response to be this overwhelming-Kriti Sanon

PLAYING A ROBOT WAS A RISK, BUT IT PAID OFF: KRITI SANON

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; February 19, 2024)

Kriti Sanon, one of the top actresses in the industry today, is basking in the appreciation and love she’s getting for her film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (TBMAUJ), in which she effortlessly plays a robot and looks stunning while at it. The National Award-winning actress talks to us about playing risky roles, her craft and more.

Your character, SIFRA – Super Intelligent Female Robot Automation – in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya has received a great response. It’s been dubbed as one of your best performances to date. Did you expect that kind of reaction?
I always felt that people equated good performances to intense scenes and emotions. This character lacked emotions, so I didn’t expect the response to be this overwhelming. To convince the audience that I am a machine in the film was extremely tricky. I knew it was a challenging role, which is what made it easy for me to take it up. There couldn’t have been many references for a character like this.

What was your reaction when you were offered the part?
When I heard the role for the first time, I found it exciting and over time, it became even better. To strike a balance between human and robot as a humanoid was tough. When I was trying to look for a reference, the only reference I could see was Scarlett Johansson’s voice in Her. I couldn’t find references to robots as characters where they were so close to being humans, which made it exciting for me as an actor.

Just like in Mimi, Luka Chuppi and Bareilly Ki Barfi, people have appreciated your comic timing in this film, too. Do you wish to do an out-and-out comedy film?
I have always been looking for an out-and-out comedy film. Female actors are not perceived for roles in the comedy genre. Some female actors, like Sridevi ma’am, Madhuri (Dixit Nene) ma’am and Juhi Chawla, have attempted comedy. Personally, I have enjoyed watching films like Andaz Apna Apna, Chaalbaaz and a movie like Queen, which was more of a feel-good film with comedy organically weaved in it.

The best compliment Kriti has received for her performance in TBMAUJ
“People told me that you were completely like a robot, but we felt for you, and that’s what I was trying to achieve. The challenge was to be like a robot, not falter, and seem human-like at the same time. Consistency was the key. At the screening, I saw my sister (Nupur Sanon) laughing and thoroughly enjoying it. She loved Mimi, and after watching this film, she said, this is my best performance to date. Nupur is honest and critical, so her positive reaction meant a lot to me.”

Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon’s Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya sparks rumours of a sequel featuring Janhvi Kapoor

Shahid and Kriti’s Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya sparks rumours of a sequel featuring Janhvi
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; February 18, 2024)

The love story between a human and an AI may not seem plausible, but it sure is fodder for stories. Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon’s Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is sparking rumours of a sequel even before the film’s final box office reports are out.

A source claims that the sequel could feature Janhvi Kapoor, who was added in the post-credit scene. “It seeds the possibility of a sequel. Janhvi is a human who attempts to charm Shahid’s [character], as Sifra [Sanon] feels slighted. In the sequel, the story could explore the consequences of what the humanoid robot did. As she attempts a human relationship,” informs the source. He adds that the film could be developed as a love triangle.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya 2 could continue to explore themes of love, identity, and the evolving relationship between humans and technology, shares the informant.

“As [Shahid and Kriti’s] unconventional relationship unfolds, societal reactions and ethical dilemmas could come into play. It could delve deeper into the complexities of their bond by revealing challenges they face as they navigate a world where love transcends traditional norms,” explains the source, adding that [producer] Dinesh Vijan believes that the stories have potential for more.

I’ve been approached many times with offers to recreate Angel Eyes, some of which came as veiled threats-Raghav Mathur

Raghav, who shot to fame with 2004’s Angel Eyes, shares the events that led to his song becoming the title track of Shahid-Kriti’s film
Sonia Lulla (MID-DAY; February 12, 2024)

In the era when pop music enjoyed its time under the sun, Raghav Mathur’s Angel Eyes (Teri Baaton Mein) (2004) became the easy hit that made its way to clubs, iPods, and song-streaming shows. The track from Storytellers—the album that brought the musician immense stardom—was in every way an evergreen number that underwent several official and unofficial iterations over the years. Soon after it went viral again during the lockdown-induced social media boom, Mathur found himself with an offer.

“[The makers of Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya] came to me two years ago with an idea to recreate it. I’ve been approached many times with similar offers, some of which came as veiled threats. This time, I agreed to go ahead. However, the original number, Angel Eyes, was written over an old reggae song called Murder She Wrote. Before my music career started, I was working in a CD store selling electronics in Calgary. My manager was working with some of the greatest Jamaican reggae producers of all time, and I had access to amazing producers. I believe this rhythm is probably the greatest dance hall rhythm of all time. I told my manager that I could write 100 songs over this rhythm because I just felt it. It’s a four-bar loop over which you can sing anything,” he recalls, further highlighting how his mother helped him pen the lyrics to Angel eyes, one of the “biggest hits of my career”.

While Mathur was willing to share the rights with the makers, the team had to also procure the required permissions from the makers of Murder she wrote. “They had to approve of the financial and creative terms because the music is synonymous with that record. We needed to have seven publishers on the same page, willing to allow iterations in the lyrics, and verses. I would give T-Series credit for being patient,” says Mathur, who asserted that the new version be rendered by him. He shares that while he was taken aback when he realized that the film had been named on the song, he “sorted it out pretty quickly”.

Mathur acknowledges that unlike several hit records of the early 2000s, Angel eyes was synonymous with the artiste who created it. In this case, it was him. “Teri Baaton was a cult classic for 20 years, if I may say so. But it was never benefited with a proper music video. I’m glad [it does have it now]. Many people said I should have been in the video, and I’m like, have you seen Shahid Kapoor?”

TERI BAATON MEIN AISA ULJHA JIYA SAILS THROUGH DESPITE A MIXED WORD OF MOUTH

Last week’s release Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya has had a decent run at the box office and in fact, has performed better than expectations. In last week’s edition, we had predicted that the Shahid Kapoor-Kriti Sanon starrer will open at around Rs. 5 crores and has an outside chance of hitting the Rs. 6 crores mark. However, the film managed to have an opening of Rs. 6.75 crores.

The word of mouth for the film was mixed and hence, there was a fear that it might not grow much over the weekend. Hence, it was a pleasant surprise when Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya collected Rs. 9.50 crores and Rs. 10.25 crores on Saturday and Sunday respectively. In short, it collected Rs. 26.50 crores in three days. On Monday, it had a normal drop as it accumulated Rs. 3.50 crores. The Tuesday drop was minimal – Rs. 3.40 crores – since the next day was a holiday-of-sorts. On Valentine’s Day, the film’s earnings zoomed to nearly Rs. 6 crores, which is close to what it earned on the day of release. The first week’s collections are expected to be around Rs. 42-43 crores.

However, what benefited Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is that the makers implemented the buy-one-ticket-get-one-ticket-free offer from Monday. This tempted many more viewers to see the film. On February 14, the scheme turned out to be a godsend for couples. A section of the industry hasn’t appreciated this move and feels that it could set a dangerous precedent. One also wonders if the offer will be extended into the second week and if not, will the film suffer a bigger fall than normal from Friday?

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya won’t have much of a competition tomorrow. The major Hindi release is Kuch Khattaa Ho Jaay, starring Guru Randhawa and Saiee Manjrekar. Dashami and Aakhir Palaayan Kab Tak also hit screens on February 16. All these three films stand no chance. The film that has some chances this week is the Hollywood superhero saga, Madame Web. The casting is interesting and though it has been panned by Western critics, it’ll still get footfalls, at least in the weekend.

I was told, ‘It’s too soon for you to turn producer’-Kriti Sanon

Kriti Sanon: I was told it’s too soon to turn producer

Gearing up for Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’s release, Kriti discusses looking forward to her maiden production later this year and battling people’s skepticism
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; February 9, 2024)

What happens when a guy and a humanoid robot fall in love? Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’s one-line idea held the promise of a breezy romantic comedy—just the kind of subject that Kriti Sanon, a self-confessed sucker for love stories, was looking for.

“People aren’t writing love stories well. Yet, here was one with a unique conflict. I wanted to know what happens when a human being falls in love with a robot, and when you put this love story in the middle of an Indian family. I was entertained during the narration. I was feeling the romance, the laughs and the aww moments,” she smiles.

Those who gauge films by box-office numbers may argue that heavy-duty action movies are dominating the scene. But who doesn’t want a dose of love once in a while, the actor counters. “Time and again, I revisit Friends because sometimes you want to watch something light and refreshing. This is an entertainer, which you can watch with your family, friends or your valentine.”

What further added to the charm of Amit Joshi and Aradhana Sah’s directorial venture is the actor’s easy chemistry with leading man Shahid Kapoor. “Chemistry is a two-way [affair]. It shouldn’t be that only I am giving to the scene. In this film, Shahid gave so much because I was playing a robot, so I had to be restrained,” she laughs.

After the romantic comedy, Sanon has The Crew with Tabu and Kareena Kapoor Khan, and the thriller, Do Patti, with Kajol. The latter also marks her production debut, as she joins an increasing list of female actors, including Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt, who juggle their successful acting careers with production. Yet, she reveals that the decision was initially met with skepticism.

“I was told, ‘It’s too soon for you to turn producer.’ What’s the logic? My reason to turn producer was more about supporting scripts and being more involved than I am as an actor. I got into production because I enjoy the creative side of it. It’s also something new. Every now and then, you have to shift gears and do something that you don’t know. I like being a newcomer in some ways and learning everything from scratch. Acting is something I learnt on the job. So, production felt like the next step.”

(Crisp) Movie Review: TERI BAATON MEIN AISA ULJHA JIYA by FENIL SETA

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya's story is quite novel. It doesn't start on a great note but gets better once the setting and characters are established. The first half is breezy and the intermission point is dramatic. Things are more or less fine in the second half too. But the climax is very disappointing. It is abrupt and doesn't do justice. Also, the jokes don't land as intended. Shahid Kapoor performs ably and dances like a dream. He also looks quite dashing. Kriti Sanon is very adorable and pulls off the challenging character of a robot effortlessly. Dimple Kapadia leaves a mark, as expected. Dharmendra is cute in a small role. From the rest of the cast, Ashish Verma (Monty), Rajesh Kumar (Mama), Raashul Vijay Tandon (Pappu), Brij Bhushan Shukla (Goldie; doctor), Rajan Kavatra (Inspector Gupta) and Manish Kumar (Constable Gujjar) do well. The songs are catchy, especially 'Laal Peeli Akhiyaan'. All in all, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is an average flick.

My rating - ** ½ out of 5!

WILL TERI BAATON MEIN AISA ULJHA JIYA SUCCEED DESPITE LIMITED TICKET SALES?

The first major release of the month, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, is all set to arrive in cinemas tomorrow, Friday, February 9. It stars Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon and is backed by Dinesh Vijan’s reputed production house, Maddock Films. The trailer caught attention, especially since it has a novel story. It’s about a dashing man who falls for a female robot. The songs, too, managed to get registered and are already a hit on Instagram. Shahid and Kriti, meanwhile, have gone all out to promote the film.

However, ticket sales as of now are limited. The morning shows will have poor occupancy but as seen in post-pandemic times, there can be a big jump in the footfalls after 4:00 pm if reports are positive. The Saturday and Sunday collections can also zoom and it now all depends on word of mouth.

As of now, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya seems to open at around Rs. 5 crores and has an outside chance of hitting the Rs. 6 crores mark. There’s no competition next week and it will have a benefit on Valentine's Day, when collections usually are strong, especially for youthful entertainers. Hence, the love story can have a great run, if all goes well. However, negative or so-so reports can prove detrimental.

What will also aid Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is that Fighter has underperformed. However, last Saturday, the collections of the Hrithik Roshan-starrer nearly doubled from the previous day. While it collected Rs. 5.50 crores on the second Friday, the collections jumped to Rs. 10 crores on Saturday. This gave the film a chance to cross the Rs. 200 crores mark, provided it shows a similar trend in the coming weekend and also the next. Nevertheless, it will face a massive reduction of shows, especially in B and C centres where the film hasn't worked. The two-week collections of the Hrithik Roshan-Deepika Padukone starrer are expected to be around Rs. 174-175 crores.

Chemistry should be the icing on the cake, not the cake itself-Shahid Kapoor

Takes two to Tango

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya actor Shahid says chemistry is as crucial as writing when determining romantic film’s success
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; February 6, 2024)

One of the fundamentals of an on-screen romantic offering, one would agree, must be the chemistry between the two lead characters. However, this spark, he says, is usually captured when two artistes share the screen, and may not be indicative of the relationship that they share when the cameras are turned off.

“There is an x-factor that comes alive on camera. People think it may be there at all times, but that’s not the case. Two people, who might have great chemistry on screen, may not look interesting once the camera is not on them. So, the camera has its own kind of universe, and, within it, sparks fly,” says the actor who returns to the genre with Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, which pairs him alongside Kriti Sanon for the first time.

Kapoor, who has headlined several popular romantic films like Ishq Vishk (2003), Jab We Met (2007), and Kismat Konnection (2008), believes that on-screen chemistry can only elevate a film that’s already strong on paper.

“The writing is fundamental, because, regardless of the spark, people can shoulder a [weak] film only to a small extent. Chemistry should be the icing on the cake, not the cake itself.” Kapoor will follow up the breezy love story with an action outing, Deva, directed by Malayalam filmmaker Rosshan Andrrews.

“I am playing a raw, rugged and rustic character. It releases in October. Shooting for it has been exciting.”

Stardom was relevant 20 years ago because you got to watch a star only at the movies-Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor goes by gut feeling, not box-office formula

Fronting rom-com Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya when action movies are ruling the roost, Shahid says artistes must present their vision to audience fearlessly
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; February 1, 2024)

Bollywood can keep doling out action films, but Shahid Kapoor is in the mood for love. After fronting crime thriller Farzi and action fare Bloody Daddy last year, the actor was keen to return to the romantic comedy genre. His wish came true quickly.

“I wanted to change things up. I had grown up watching [rom-com] movies, and was missing them. Maybe we weren’t making good ones, maybe the directors who aced them were not as fresh now—I was thinking all these things when I found this script,” he says, referring to Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya. The Kapoor and Kriti Sanon-starrer promises to be a breezy story of a guy falling in love with a humanoid robot.

Surely, a novel choice, but not risk-proof. Kapoor is aware that spectacle movies are dominating the scene today. But the actor goes by his gut feeling, not box-office formula. “You can either be success-oriented or creatively driven. [Ideally], you should have a balance of both. But with time, as a fraternity, we are looking at the audience to tell us what they want to watch and then we go around making it. By the time it’s out, how do you know the audience still feels like that? I backed my feeling, and didn’t wait for the audience to tell me.”

Following one’s gut feeling is not easy, but he believes that an artiste and his art must be brave. “My job as an artiste is to make a film and ask you, ‘Did you like it?’ I cannot want the answer before posing the question. You have to be braver than that.”

In his two-decade career, the actor has constantly mixed things up, juggling a romantic comedy in Jab We Met (2007) and a gritty thriller in Kaminey (2009), a masala fare in R… Rajkumar (2013) and an intense drama in Haider (2014). To him, making unsafe choices is the only way to sustain stardom.

“Today, people get bored fast. Stardom in [all its mystique] was relevant 20 years ago because you got to watch a star only at the movies. But now, you see a star everywhere. It’s more difficult to hold on to your stardom. Your talent, craft and choices will reignite the audience’s interest in you. So, safe choices are unsafe, and unsafe choices are safer today.”
