Set to make his Bollywood debut with Rakul Preet Singh’s Chhatriwali, writer-director Tejas Deoskar of Bucket List fame on bagging two films in the south

You know it’s an empowering time to be a storyteller, when people ask what’s the story, not which state one comes from or what language one speaks in. Having helmed popular Marathi films including, 'Bucket List' featuring Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Baba, and Premsutra, among others and now making his Hindi feature debut with the Rakul Preet Singh-starrer 'Chhatriwali', filmmaker Tejas Deoskar says he has already received offers to make two films in South.
“I have got calls from South to make a film—in languages that I don’t even know. They approached me on the basis of the work I have done. It is a great [time] to collaborate, as the audience is accepting, producers are open [to work with different storytellers], and OTT platforms are inviting filmmakers,” says the director thrilled that work is now offered on the basis of merit, not the “camps you join.”
Deoskar, who is eagerly waiting for the release of the ZEE5 film 'Chhatriwali', that is scheduled to air on January 20, explains that he came aboard the social comedy because of its content. “The story had humour, but it was not a subject that is often discussed by people. [Having said that], the film is not sleazy or something my own family cannot watch. I felt [the topic] was fantastic and should be told [in a film format]. It ticked all the right boxes, for me.”

Sai Tamhankar is on a roll. After picking up awards for her performance in Mimi, the actress is set to be seen in multiple Hindi films in the near future. We have learnt that Sai has been paired opposite Emraan Hashmi in an upcoming film titled Ground Zero.
Tejas Deoskar, whose last release was the Marathi film Bucket List, is directing the film and Emraan reportedly plays an army officer in the film that also stars Zoya Hussain and Deepak Paramesh.
According to a source Sai is playing Emraan's wife in the film. “The two got along well during the preparation of the movie. They share amazing chemistry,” says the source.
Reportedly, the film also features Lalit Prabhakar, who was recently seen opposite Sai in the Marathi film Medium Spicy.
The film's team is currently shooting in Pahalgam, after wrapping up a schedule in Srinagar.

As shooting is curbed in UP due to Covid-19 crisis, Raaj Shaandilyaa to roll Nushrratt-starrer Janhit Mein Jaari in MP
Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; June 3, 2021)
If Raaj Shaandilyaa had his way, Nushrratt Bharuccha-starrer Janhit Mein Jaari would have rolled in Uttar Pradesh in late-April. However, with many states going into a lockdown in the second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic, the producer has had to do a rethink. “According to the guidelines, we cannot shoot in Uttar Pradesh. The state witnessed a spike in cases, and things may be improving now, but we cannot venture into the state until further notice,” says Shaandilyaa, who has also penned the script of the comedy.
He now intends to take the film to Chanderi and Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh instead. “It’s a small-town story, so these places serve as ideal locations. We are tweaking the story to suit the new locale.”
Bharuccha plays an executive at a condom manufacturing company in her second collaboration with Shaandilyaa after Dream Girl (2019). Last month, director Tejas Deoskar announced his film that will see Rakul Preet Singh play a condom tester. Shaandilyaa is not worried about the similar themes as he says, “They are different films, and my movie was planned last year.”

The film is reportedly being helmed by director Tejas Deoskar, whose last outing was the Marathi film Bucket List, featuring Madhuri Dixit Nene

Known for her roles in films like De De Pyaar De and Marjaavaan, Rakul Preet Singh is venturing into a new genre with an upcoming film. The actress, who will also be seen in Junglee Pictures’ Doctor G opposite Ayushmann Khurrana soon, is set to play a condom tester in an untitled project. The film, which is said to be a social comedy, offers a quirky take on quashing the stigma that Indians have about the use of condoms.
Marathi filmmaker Tejas Deoskar, who last directed Madhuri Dixit Nene in her debut Marathi film Bucket List (2018), will be helming the project. This film also marks Tejas’ debut in Bollywood. A source close to the project reveals, “Rakul is definitely on board for the project and is quite thrilled to play this role. She is currently prepping for her part as well. The pre-production process has begun and the discussions with regards to the shoot locations are underway, too. Tejas is looking forward to broadening his horizon and stepping into Hindi films.”
The source adds, “The film was likely to go on floors in the next few months, but due to the current COVID-19 situation, the makers have put their plans on hold and will take a call when the situation improves.”
WHO IS A CONDOM TESTER?
Condom testers are people, above the age of 18, hired by condom companies to test their new products before they hit the market.
We could not stop looking at Madhuri Dixit. She has that effect on you-Tejas Deoskar & Devashree Shivadekar

When Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar and Devashree Shivadekar stepped into a room where Madhuri Dixit was waiting to hear their narration, there was a nervous silence initially. "But, the good kind of nerves", we are told. Leading to that moment was a series of serendipitous events.
Deoskar, 34, who had made two Marathi feature films - Ajinkya and Prem Sutra - is relatively new to the industry, while Shivadekar, had been living in the US for over seven years, and therefore, couldn't have been more cut off from the Marathi industry. But, in February this year the two met by chance, through a common friend. "I was here on vacation, toggling with ideas to write a film, when I met Tejas. He happened to share with me a one-line story for a film, and I was hooked. But, at that time, we did not imagine that we'd actually be doing the film with 'the' Madhuri Dixit," recalls the 30-year-old who did her masters in screenwriting from New York Film Academy.
As far-fetched as it seemed, Deoskar was always clear that he wanted no one but Dixit for his film. A fortunate connection with the superstar's PR, Reshma Shetty, gave him a slight ray of hope. "We sent a four-page story to her, without keeping our hopes high. You can imagine our surprise when we got a call back two days later. Madhuri wanted a narration of the script." Recalling the moment they met Dixit, a gushing Shivadekar says, "For the first few seconds, we could not stop looking at her. She has that effect on you. But, of course, we soon reminded ourselves that we were there for a purpose. It was a do-or-die moment."
Once the narration was done, there was a pause of 10 minutes. "No one in the room said a word. Madhuri was poker-faced as ever. After what seemed like an eternity, she said, 'we'll get back to you'," Deoskar says. "I was sure at that time that she would say no. Tejas, however, did not want to assume yet," says his writing partner. They waited outside, contemplating and speculating for nearly half an hour, when they got a call from Dixit's team saying she had liked the script. It was still a long way to go till she signed the dotted line. Two more script reading sessions followed, during with the writer duo had done narrations with 70 people, before sitting with Madhuri, each time. "We did narrations for all age groups, between 16 and 70, people who were not connected to industry. We wanted a lay person's opinion. By the fifth draft, we knew we had accomplished something."
Deoskar won't give much away about the story. "It is a true story, something that was in fact published in a newspaper abroad two years ago. It's the journey of self-discovery of a woman in her early 40s, and there was no one other than Madhuri who could have done this film." Dixit finally signed on the dotted line in August, and soon after, Shetty, her PR told Deoskar that this was the first time Madhuri had read a script and called back personally.
While roping in a big star is a great kick, it can come with its own set of challenges. "She's extremely dignified and accommodating as a person, who has relaxed several protocols to adjust to the budget and scale of the film. This is not Bollywood, after all. Had that not have been the case, yes, things could have gotten burdensome," Deoskar says.
The film goes on the floors in December, and aims for a summer release next year. These days of course, the duo meets the star often. "We have frequent discussions about the story, characterisation, technicalities etc. We are also doing a few workshops with her. She is very receptive as a person and as an actor, and with each meeting, I feel we are only getting better."
