MID-DAY (April 8, 2020)

Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra Jonas along with singer Billie Eilish and Paul McCartney have united for Lady Gaga’s One World: Together At Home, a mega live-streamed and televised benefit concert in tandem with the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) solidarity response fund and in celebration of health workers around the world.

The line-up also includes Chris Martin of Coldplay, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Elton John, John Legend, Lizzo, J Balvin, Stevie Wonder, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Alanis Morissette, Burna Boy, Andrea Bocelli, Kacey Musgraves, Keith Urban and Lang Lang.

Khan and Chopra are among several stars expected at the event, along with David Beckham, Idris and Sabrina Elba, Kerry Washington, and Sesame Street cast members. Popular US talk show hosts Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert will host the event, which broadcasts live across the US television networks ABC, CBS and NBC, as well as be streamed online on April 18.

BBC One will show an adapted version of the concert on April 19, including exclusive performances by UK artistes and interviews with frontline health workers. The details of the broadcast are yet to be announced. WHO and the social action platform, Global Citizen have partnered to produce the event. The latter’s Together At Home series, which launched last month, has featured performances from artistes in isolation including Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello and Rufus Wainwright.

In a WHO press conference, Gaga said that One World was not a fundraising telethon and would focus on entertainment, messages of solidarity, and urge businesses to donate to the cause ahead of the event.

“We may have to be apart physically for a little while, but we can still come together virtually to enjoy great music. The One World: Together at Home concert represents a powerful show of solidarity against a common threat,” said WHO’s general director, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

World Health Organization ropes in Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone for Safe Hands challenge

BOMBAY TIMES (March 18, 2020)

As the world continues to deal with the Coronavirus pandemic, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the World Health Organisation Director General invited celebrities like Korean pop boy band BTS, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Deepika Padukone to join and educate people via their Safe Hands challenge initiative. The WHO started the campaign in an attempt to spread awareness about washing hands in the right manner during the coronavirus crisis. Since maintaining personal hygiene is one of the key ways to stay safe amid the outbreak, while doing the Safe Hands Challenge one has to share an instructional video on the right technique to wash hands.

Among the other stars nominated for the challenge are Arnold Schwarzenegger and model Christy Turlington. Ghebreyesus’ tweet nominating the celebrities read, “I now nominate: @deepikapadukone @priyankachopra @Schwarzenegger @CTurlington to take the #SafeHands challenge by sharing their video & calling on at least another 3 people to join us! Together, we can beat #COVID19!”

Earlier, Priyanka had shared a video urging people to avoid handshakes and go with namaste amid the coronavirus scare. She also shared a post spreading awareness about maintaining basic hygiene to avoid the spread.
