Free movie ticket offer turning into a flop show

‘Buy one get one free’ plans on opening weekend itself being seen as a tactic by producers to push bad films, say experts
Rajesh N Naidu (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; September 15, 2025)
Mumbai: Increasing frequency of introducing 'buy one get one' (BOGO) offer on movie tickets, either in the opening weekend or on the opening day of a film's release rather than much later is proving to be counterproductive for producers as audiences are perceiving this tactic as the last resort to deal with low audience interest and boost collections of bad films, said film trade analysts, producers and distributors.
Recently, the makers of Hindi films such as Tanvi The Great, Baaghi 4, Ek Chatur Naar, and Heer Express announced BOGO offers on the opening day itself.
"BOGO ticket offers either on the opening day, or weekend have become a new trend in recent months," said Shaaminder Malik, a film distributor and trade analyst. "Earlier, makers would wait for at least two weeks and introduce BOGO offers on tickets to sustain momentum in collections of films which have already clicked with audiences," he added.
BOGO offer on film tickets first began with the rationale of making incremental collections on films which have already worked with audiences. Producers could afford to give BOGO offers of such films since the box office collections had already surpassed their estimates in the initial weeks. They would, therefore, launch a BOGO offer much after a film is released in theatres.
For instance, the makers of the film Gadar 2, which received a tremendous response from audiences, introduced a BOGO offer only in the third week of its release. For such films, a BOGO offer helps to boost ticket sales by 10-20%, said trade analysts. It also allows makers of mid-and-small-sized films to attract audiences to theatres. A pitfall of this practice is producers lose money when films fail to provide high incremental collections post the offer as they pay for the free tickets. Exhibitors' share in collections, however, remains intact.
"The general understanding of BOGO offers is that one gets a ticket free on buying a ticket. But this is a marketing thing. In real terms, one gets a discount of a certain amount on a ticket which is capped and borne by a producer," explained Suniel Wadhwa, co-founder and director at Karmic Films.
"These campaigns are tactical marketing spending to build momentum in footfalls. But they can never be a substitute for organic success of films."
Largely, producers have not gained from these marketing initiatives if one considers the performance of recent films. Even after the BOGO offer, Baaghi 4, which released on September 5, collected Rs. 47.5 crore compared to Rs. 72 crore by the English film, The Conjuring: Last Rites, which released on the same date.
"BOGO offers are so excessively used that they have a negative effect. Today, audiences interpret a BOGO offer as an indication that a film is not good. So, it is backfiring," said Girish Johar, producer and film business expert.
Though producers are resorting to BOGO offers, besides getting high-value deals from streamers and satellite channels, these entities have become stricter in buying films at irrational prices from producers.
I remember feeling like a cub protected by lions on Tanvi The Great sets-Shubhangi

Debutante Shubhangi talks about starting her acting journey with industry veterans
Akash Bhatnagar (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 29, 2025)
Shubhangi debuted in Hindi films with actor Anupam Kher’s directorial, Tanvi The Great. Being an outsider, the actor feels it was a dream working with an ensemble cast that led her on every step of the way.
Shubhangi refers to the seasoned actors — her co-stars Pallavi Joshi, Boman Irani, Anupam, Arvind Swami and Jackie Shroff — as “lions”. She shares, “We all used to eat together when we were shooting in Lansdowne (Uttarakhand) and I remember feeling like a cub protected by lions. It instinctively felt so because that’s the vibe and energy I got. They protected me.”
Having started her journey in acting with them, she says it has shaped her well as an actor and as a human being. “On screen or offscreen, there’s just something so captivating about all of them. I used to be awestruck and starstruck. I’m just counting my blessings as working with them is more than a dream come true.”
Hailing from Anupam’s acting school, she was chosen by him for the role of an autistic girl, which is inspired by his niece, Tanvi. Shubhangi underwent rigorous physical training and spent time with autistic kids to prepare for her part. Having worked with Anupam in his acting school and now the film, she says, “Anupam sir is a mentor and my guiding light. He was also strict, but everything you see on screen, unki hi wajah se hua hai.”
The industry is uncertain, so I don’t complain about too much work-Karan Tacker

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 28, 2025)
It has been a busy two months for Karan Tacker, but the actor says the constant running around was worth it. He had a film and web series (Tanvi The Great and Special OPS season 2 respectively) release on the same day this month, all while he shot for his next show.
A lot has happened on the personal front as well. “My sister had a baby, and that took everyone’s attention and time,” shares the actor, who tells us that he will also be launching a brand soon.
Some might find all these professional developments hectic, but not Karan.
“Maine realize kiya hai ki actors ki aadat hoti hai to rue packed calendars. As an actor, physically, you are working for only about 180 days. The rest of the time, you are either in the middle of projects, or looking for one,” the 39-year-old says.
“With all the uncertainty the industry has seen in the last few years, main toh kabhi complain nahin karta jab kaam hota hai,” he adds.
Grateful for a packed schedule, the actor muses, “Jab neend kam milti hai, toh lagta hai kuchh sahi chal raha hai life mein. And that hard work pays off. The last two months have been beautiful. It’s been hectic, but a lot of fun too.”
With back-to-back releases, promotions can often get hectic and tiring for actors. Ask Karan about it and he shares, “Earlier, promotions were a prestigious way of putting your product out there. In times where attention spans are shrinking, they are now a necessity.”
“Certain projects like Special OPS already have traction, but you want to buy people’s attention so they know something is coming out next week. Aapne mehnat ki hai, aap logon ko toh bataoge na,” he ends.
After seeing Shah Rukh Khan's tweet, I couldn’t sleep all night-Shubhangi Dutt

Debutant Shubhangi Dutt reveals she spent 15 days with director Anupam Kher’s niece, the inspiration behind Tanvi The Great, to portray the autistic character authentically
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; July 17, 2025)
Very few actors get a dream launch. Shubhangi Dutt admits debuting with Tanvi The Great, directed by Anupam Kher, is something she hadn’t even imagined. She was one of the many at Kher’s acting institute, Actor Prepares, who had auditioned for the role.
“They had shortlisted a few people. I think, sir [Kher] said that I was focused and hard-working. Maybe that also helped me get this role,” she reflects.
Since then, it has been an “overwhelming” ride — from sharing screen space with senior actors like Kher, Boman Irani, and Pallavi Joshi, to being officially introduced as the film’s lead actor by Kajol at a media event.
“Kajol ma’am is so versatile. Imagine sharing the stage with her! She was the first person to say my name out loud in front of the whole world. I was nervous, but at the same time, it was comforting because she is also a woman who started from somewhere and made a big name for herself,” says Dutt, adding that Shah Rukh Khan posting the film’s trailer was another high.
“I was asleep, and at 2.30 am, my brother knocked on my door and said that Shah Rukh sir had posted the trailer. After seeing it, I couldn’t sleep all night. I have been happy before, but this isn’t just happiness. It’s overwhelming in the best possible way.”
Tanvi the Great follows a 21-year-old woman with autism who is determined to join the Indian Army. How does one play a neurodivergent individual without compromising on its authenticity? Dutt says by “observing the soul” of Tanvi, Kher’s autistic niece, who is the movie’s inspiration.
“I spent 15 days with Tanvi. During that time, I asked Sir again and again, ‘Am I supposed to note down her characteristics? The way she responds?’ Sir matter-of-factly said, ‘Observe her soul.’ When I met Tanvi, she was so beautiful and present. Then I understood Sir’s words. What he wanted from me was sincerity and purity. He didn’t want mimicry.”
Shooting one’s first film can be exhilarating, but some days can be hard too. “I remember a scene where I had to deliver a dialogue, turn, and perform some gestures — all within one shot. I got really nervous; that was my first meltdown on set. I had two or three in total. It’s a lot to process. Usually, Sir is happiest with the first take. But when he is not satisfied, he’ll keep pushing you until it’s right. I was okay doing 50 or even 100 takes, but that’s not feasible. That pressure I put on myself was difficult.”
(Crisp) Movie Review: TANVI THE GREAT by FENIL SETA

Tanvi The Great is directed by Anupam Kher and features him in a supporting role. The film revolves around a young autistic girl who wants to join the army. The film is well-intentioned and shows promise in many places. Sadly, the desired impact is not made for several reasons - excessive length, too many songs, lack of proper characterization, tacky VFX etc. The My-Name-Is-Khan-meets-12th-Fail pre-climax and climax also fall short. Debutant Shubhangi Dutt gives a wonderful performance and shows a lot of promise. Anupam Kher the actor is much better than Anupam Kher the director. Pallavi Joshi is lovely and deserves to be seen more. Karan Tacker is adorable in a cameo. Boman Irani is sincere but is let down by the writing. Jackie Shroff (Brigadier Joshi), Arvind Swami (Major Srinivas) and Nasser (Brigadier K N Rao) leave a mark. All in all, Tanvi The Great is made with noble intentions but writing and execution fail to do justice to the subject.

Taking Tanvi The Great to Cannes a huge kharcha. But I want to put the film on a pedestal-Anupam Kher

Anupam Kher talks about his directorial, Tanvi The Great, which will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival 2025, and his passion for cinema
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 16, 2025)
Actor Anupam Kher’s second directorial in more than two decades, Tanvi The Great, will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this May. Anupam shares that he wanted the film’s journey to start from “the Maha Kumbh of cinema”.
“I directed Om Jai Jagadish in 2002, but that was not my story. After that, I didn’t direct any film. I wanted it to come from within me, an Indian film for international viewing. I’ve been waiting to direct another film for 23 years now,” says the 70-year-old.
Anupam adds that he has made the film with a theatrical release in mind: “The film has an Indian character, but it’s a universal film. That’s why I am spending money, taking actors there (Cannes) — it’s a huge kharcha. But I want to put the film on a pedestal. You will not ask Martin Scorcese if his film will release in theatres or OTT! I am not comparing myself to these greats, but when you are making a film with passion, uska jo marzi hashr ho, you make it for the cinemas.”
Ask Anupam, who has worked in international projects such as Silver Linings Playbook (2012), whether Indian films and talent are seen differently now, and he says, “It certainly has changed, but I have not made this film as a crusader. It has an international appeal which is why I signed on internationally known people such as (composer) MM Keeravani and (sound designer) Resul Pookutty, both Oscar winners. My DoP (Keiko Nakahara) is Japanese.”
Why Anupam Kher decided to not surround himself with other struggling actors

Bollywood actor Anupam Kher, who is working on his second directorial venture, on how being lonely and frustrated was necessary to build his 40-year acting career
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; November 11, 2024)
For Vijay 69, Anupam Kher took on the challenge of learning swimming at 69. The idea of challenging himself extends to his next venture too. The veteran actor, who had turned director with Om Jai Jagadish in 2002, is giving filmmaking a second shot with Tanvi The Great. The musical stars him alongside Game of Thrones actor Iain Glen, with music composed by Oscar winner M M Keeravani.
Relishing this chapter of his career, Kher states, “Like Vijay 69, even for my directorial venture, I took up a difficult subject. No one can tell us what we can or cannot do. We can be ordinary, but the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that extra effort. You have to bring that element in your life and career.”
Kher has completed four decades in the industry. It was a realization early on in his journey that turned things around for him. “It’s important to be lonely and frustrated [for an artiste],” he says, recounting how he decided to not surround himself with other struggling actors.
“When I came to Mumbai, people told me that I should go to Pamposh restaurant in Bandra and hang outside Prithvi Theatre. So, I went to Pamposh and saw a few old people. They were sipping tea and saying, ‘Gyarah saal se struggle kar raha hoon.’ I realized that seven years later, I might [be one of them]. That’s why I never sat with them.”
Over the decades that followed, Kher built not only an eclectic filmography, but also meaningful friendships in the industry—from Anil Kapoor to Chunky Panday.
“Now, [such friendships] are not possible. I’m not saying today people aren’t capable of forming relationships, but at that time, we didn’t have any vanity vans. We didn’t have so many people surrounding us. What we had were conversations,” he says.
Anupam Kher returns as director: "I’ve seen more life since Om Jai Jagadish"

Akash Bhatnagar (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 27, 2024)
Anupam Kher marked his directorial debut with Om Jai Jagdish in 2002. Now, after 22 years, the actor is set to don the director’s hat again for his next, Tanvi The Great. Ask what took him so long to get in the director’s chair, and Kher says, “I was waiting for a story to inspire me and make me feel that I should share it with the world. Om Jai Jagadish wasn’t my story. I was acting at that time and I was just excited about being a part of films in another capacity. But after that, I decided that if I had to direct a film again, the story should come from within.”
The 69-year-old informs that the idea of Tanvi The Great came to him about four years ago and its shoot started earlier this month. Ask how he has changed as a director since Om Jai Jagdish, and Kher says, “I’ve seen more life since Om Jai Jagdish. The kind of cinema that I want to make should have joy and heartbreak.”
The film is a musical that will have Oscar-winning composer M M Keeravaani helming its soundtrack. “We have been working on the film’s music for the last one year. It was around his Oscar win when I called him. In 10 minutes of hearing the script, he said yes,” says the Uunchai (2022) actor, who has been flying to Hyderabad every two months to finalize the film’s music.
He adds, “For me, it was very important to have the music of the film ready before I started shooting. It helps the film stay true to itself. Mr Keeravaani is also doing the background score, because I can’t have a different person doing it.”
