Bejoy Nambiar on being part of the directorial team of Dixit's web debut that rolls in Nashik
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; October 24, 2020)
Unlike the entertainment industry that is gradually picking up the pace, director Bejoy Nambiar has been working at a frenetic speed. Only days after he shot for a Tamil short film in Chennai, the director is set to head to Nashik early next month to helm Madhuri Dixit-Nene's web debut, backed by Karan Johar's Dharmatic Entertainment.
"I am directing two episodes of the Netflix show, The Actress. Madhuri is one of the biggest idols of Hindi cinema. Naturally, I am thrilled to get a chance to work with her," states Nambiar, who serves as one of the three directors. Revolving around a superstar who vanishes without a trace, the suspense drama sees Sri Rao as the director-showrunner. Nambiar adds, "I have never worked on a project where somebody else is the showrunner, and I have to fulfil the directorial responsibilities. So, this will be a new experience for me."
The writer-director also has the ZEE5 original, Taish, on the anvil. "As creators, we are constantly attempting new things. It was a challenge to develop Taish in two formats — a film and a series."

On the web, it is not about big faces, but talent-Madhuri Dixit

Madhuri Dixit Nene says that the web provides creators with the freedom to narrate stories that need to be told, heard and seen
Radhika Bhirani (HINDUSTAN TIMES; December 9, 2019)
At a time when Bollywood’s A-list talent is readily joining the OTT bandwagon in one capacity or another, Madhuri Dixit Nene is not one to be left behind. The actor tells us exclusively that she is all set to make her acting debut in the OTT universe, which she feels has changed the dynamics of Indian showbiz.
The yet untitled Netflix series that Madhuri will be a part of, will be produced by Karan Johar. She describes it as a “family drama full of suspense”.
Excited about foraying into the digital space, she says, “I am extremely excited to be making my OTT acting debut. As an artiste, I am always looking out to do work that is creatively fulfilling and that reaches out to maximum number of people.”
The show is written by New York-based writer-director Sri Rao. Breaking down its concept further, Madhuri says, “It reflects a bit on the lives that people in the entertainment industry lead... The story is entertaining, gripping, nail-biting, and yet heartwarming and I can’t wait to start shooting for it.”
What the 52-year-old actor finds particularly enthusing is how the OTT medium marries “two of the most important things in the world today — entertainment and internet, thereby giving opportunities to all actors and filmmakers to create content that can reach out to millions of people across the world”.
Madhuri, who had produced a Marathi film 15 August for the OTT medium earlier this year, adds, “With changing times, our audience is also seeking more engaging content, which also means sharing stories of real and strong women.” A mother of two, Madhuri is glad that platforms are doing their bit to “pique the interest of a global audience who clearly wants to hear and see stories about women they can relate to”.
More so, the one marked change she notices in showbiz is how content has moved beyond theatres. “With the help of OTT platforms, performers and creators have been given another avenue to express their creativity and take on more challenges. It gives us the freedom and flexibility to narrate and showcase stories that need to be told, heard and seen. It is not about big faces anymore, but about big talent,” says Madhuri, who is convinced it’s a “great time” to be an actor or filmmaker today.

Backed by Priyanka Chopra, Madhuri Dixit says sitcom is not a biopic but 'an amalgamation of experiences'
Sonil Dedhia (MID-DAY; February 13, 2019)
The coming together of Bollywood's two formidable leading ladies - Madhuri Dixit-Nene and Priyanka Chopra - for a show based on the former's life evoked much interest over the past year. The Chopra-backed offering, reportedly picked up by ABC Studios, will mark Dixit's international debut.
Point out how the series has yet to go on floors, and Dixit assures that it is developing at a steady pace. "Television works in a different way in the West. They select a script and commission it only if they want to start it in that particular season. The channel heads have the concept and are mulling over it. Meanwhile, we are writing the script. Once they are ready to roll, we will be too," she says.
Although the show is inspired by the time she spent in the US after tying the knot with Dr Sriram Nene, she insists it is not a biopic. "It's not my life story as that will be too boring," she laughs.
The actor adds that writer Sri Rao, who is penning the series, has tried to reflect the inherent humour in the situation. "We are offering a comic take on how a Bollywood actor settles down in the American suburbs. The series will be an amalgamation of my experiences, a superstar whose world changes once she migrates to another country where nobody knows her."

Little has been known about her decade-long journey in Denver, US, where Madhuri Dixit-Nene set up base after marrying Dr Sriram Nene. Before her upcoming sitcom, which promises to trace her life in America, goes on floors, Dixit, in an exclusive interview to mid-day, says the venture is merely inspired by her journey.
Backed by Priyanka Chopra, an apt selection given her influence in India and the West, the sitcom for American Broadcasting Company (ABC), is currently in the writing stage. Until now, the actor’s journey has best been described as that of an Indian actor’s attempt to add colour to an otherwise dull location, whose inhabitants are unaware of her stature. It chronicles how she influenced people in Colorado.
Dixit says, “I am going to US, which will help in the creation of select episodes. The sitcom is inspired by my life, but it’s not entirely about me. My time in America was barely influenced by the recognition I had in India. The show highlights that too.”
Dixit claims to be involved in every process of the making. Delighted to have Chopra aboard as executive producer, she says the recommendation to approach her came from American producer Mark Gordon. “The project was conceived by us [husband Nene and Dixit] along with writer Sri Rao. Once we were sure about the idea, we approached Gordon’s production company [Entertainment One] to take it forward. They loved the idea. They suggested we get Priyanka on board. We thought it was a great idea because she knows our industry and how the system works in the West too.”

A series inspired by Madhuri Dixit-Nene’s life is under production by the American studio ABC. The Bollywood diva has been putting the show together, while on holiday. Talking about the show for the first time, Madhuri says, “I was pleasantly surprised in the summer of 2016 when Sri (Rao) said he wanted to do a series inspired by my life in America. As Ram (her husband) and I chatted with Sri, the story evolved and Mark Gordon Productions came on board, wanting to produce it.”
Later, Priyanka Chopra also came aboard. “Bringing on Priyanka was perfect in that she had experience with the landscape,” says Madhuri. The show was subsequently pitched and picked up by the ABC network and is being developed for the US and international markets.
What better than the incredible, real life of Madhuri Dixit-Priyanka Chopra

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 31, 2017)
American screenwriter, Sri
Rao, who got his first break with the English TV series, What Goes On,
in 2007, and went on to write General Gospital: Night Shift, had always
dreamt of writing for a Bollywood project. After shopping his scripts in
India for a couple of years, he made a writing debut in 2016 with Nitya
Mehra's Baar Baar Dekho, featuring Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif.
Around the time, inspired by Dhak Dhak girl Madhuri Dixit and her life in the US post marriage, he wrote a comedy show and took it to Priyanka Chopra who was scouting for scripts to produce. And a collaboration was forged.
Speaking to Mirror from New York, 'Producer Pri', a tag coined by the 34-year-old actress's fan clubs, said, “One of the favourite parts of my job as an actress-producer is that I can tell stories across genres, languages and to a varied audience. The story needs to appeal to me and impress me and what better than the incredible, real life of Madhuri Dixit.“
PeeCee, who is presently shooting for Todd Strauss's Isn't It Romantic alongside Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth and Adam Devine in New York, described Sri's story as “amazing“ and asserts that she can't wait to work with both Madhuri and Sri to see how it will pan out. “It's unchartered territory for me but I'm happy I've taken another step in my creative journey as a producer,“ she exulted.
The yet-untitled series follows a former Bollywood star who, after marriage, settles down in a sleepy American suburb with her bi-cultural family. “It's a fun concept and will be shot as a single-camera sitcom which will blend comedic and dramatic elements. I've only just begun developing the pilot but am rolling up my sleeves and getting to work,“ she laughed, adding that she's wrapped up her second Hollywood film, Silas Howard's A Kid Like Jake, a transgender-drama headlined by award-winning TV stars Jim Parsons and Claire Danes, in which she plays a single mom. “Sri is fabulous and this is his series, I'm only shepherding it,“ PeeCee adds.
The pilot, which will be shot next month, will have Madhuri and her husband Sriram Nene on-board as the executive producers. ABC Studios, Mark Gordan and Nick Pepper are pro ducing the show.
Priyanka took the idea to Mark three months ago and the producer was instantly keen on collaborating with her on an Indo-American series. “I had a great experience with Mark and Nick during Quantico and this is the perfect extension of our long friendship,“ she signs off, promising there are more Hollywood projects lined up for her this year.
