(Crisp) Movie Review: SHER SHIVRAJ by FENIL SETA

Sher Shivraj is a recently released Marathi film which is the fourth part of what can be called the Maratha Cinematic Universe. The third part, Pawankhind, released in February 2022 and was one of the biggest blockbusters of Marathi cinema. Sher Shivraj tells the story of how Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj defeated the mighty Afzal Khan, through physical prowess and psychological tactics. The 153 minute long film moves at a slow pace and takes time for the build up. At certain points, the audiences might feel restless. However, all the build up helps with the last 30 minutes being terrific. The audience in my show was not reacting at all but towards the end, there was a frenzy in the theatre! What’s surprising is that this is a popular story from the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and everyone from kids to adults know about it. Yet, the execution, particularly in the finale, makes it worth a watch. Chinmay Mandlekar (last seen as Farooq Malik Bitta in The Kashmir Files) yet again delivers another smashing performance as Shivaji Maharaj. His entry scene is also quite memorable. Mukesh Rishi is menacing as the villain and enhances the impact. Mrinal Kulkarni (Rajmata Jijabai) and Isha Keskar (Saibai) leave a mark. Director Digpal Lanjekar is quite good in the role of Bahirji Naik. His act in the song 'Shivba Raja' will be loved. All in all, Sher Shivraj works due to the subject and a superb climax. Its shows are increasing day by day and it’ll surely be a lambi race ka ghoda in cinemas.

My rating - *** ½ out of 5!

WILL JERSEY GET THE ADVANTAGE OF LAST-MINUTE POSTPONEMENT?

Shahid Kapoor’s last film, Kabir Singh, had emerged as a surprise blockbuster. The actor, whose solo films never went beyond the Rs. 70 crore mark, shocked everyone as Kabir Singh collected Rs. 276.34 crore! Now, all eyes are on his next, Jersey, which releases tomorrow.

Jersey also stars Mrunal Thakur and Shahid’s real-life father, Pankaj Kapur. It tells the story of a man who decides to fulfill his dream of becoming a cricketer at the age of 36. It is the remake of the 2019 Telugu film of the same name. Gowtam Tinnanuri, the director of the original film, has also directed the Hindi remake.

Jersey was supposed to release on August 28, 2020, but was postponed due to the pandemic. The makers then briefly tried releasing it on Diwali 2021, before settling for December 31. Sadly, on December 27, the film was pushed due to the third wave. The makers took their time in announcing the new release date as they wanted to arrive when theatres in all states were open and when 100% occupancy would be allowed.

In mid-February, it was announced that it’ll release on April 14 and thus clash with the monstrous KGF - Chapter 2. Several trade experts and industry insiders advised not to do so as the hype for KGF - Chapter 2 is tremendous. Yet, the makers didn’t pay heed. It’s when KGF - Chapter 2’s advance booking began and when its tickets started selling like hot cakes is when they realized that they’ll be in trouble if Jersey arrives on April 14. Hence, on April 11, the producers revealed that their film would now arrive on April 22.

The trailer of Jersey has been well received. Shahid Kapoor is on a high after Kabir Singh and that’ll prove to be an advantage. However, it’s not like the hype for the film is huge and that viewers would flock to the cinemas to watch it. KGF - Chapter 2 has slowed down on weekdays but it can pick up during the second weekend. Moreover, in Maharashtra, it’ll face a tough fight from Sher Shivraj. It is the next part after Pawankhind, which was released in February 2022, and was a super-hit. And that’s not all. Next week, its screens would reduce considerably due to the Eid releases – Heropanti 2 and Runway 34.

As a result, Jersey needs to be a very good film to sustain and excel. The opening day figures would be in the range of Rs. 5-7 crore. An opening weekend of Rs. 25 crore and the first week of Rs. 40 crore seems to be the best bet, provided the word of mouth is positive. Then it’ll all be about how it withstands the Eid releases and other forthcoming films.

The other major Bollywood release is Operation Romeo. It is produced by Neeraj Pandey and stars Sharad Kelkar, Bhumika Chawla, Sidhant Gupta and Vedika Pinto. It is the remake of the Malayalam film Ishq. The trailer is promising but the awareness is near zero. Hence, it’ll have a disastrous run at the box office, even if the reports are positive.

Digpal Lanjekar has planned an 8-movie series on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with me playing the legendary ruler-Chinmay Mandlekar

Third time’s a charm for Chinmay Mandlekar

Mandlekar, who plays Chhatrapati Shivaji in the Marathi film Pawankhind, discusses playing the historical character for the third time on screen
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; March 10, 2022)

It is difficult for a regional film to stand out, especially when it is released only a week ahead of Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, and Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, that released on March 4. However, Digpal Lanjekar’s Marathi film Pawankhind, which released on February 18, not only managed to woo the audiences, but is also expected to make Rs 30 crore at the box office by the end of the fourth week. The budget of the film was close to Rs 5.50 crore.

The period drama sees Chinmay Mandlekar reprising the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for the third time, after Farzand (2018) and Fatteshikast (2019). The film, based on a rear-guard face-off between Maratha warrior Baji Prabhu Deshpande and Siddi Masud of Adilshah sultanate, is only the third film in the franchise.

“The director Digpal Lanjekar has planned an eight-movie series on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with me playing the legendary ruler. After Pawankhind, the fourth film, Sher Shivraj will release on [April 29],” says the actor.

Taking up the role was a no-brainer for Mandlekar, who idolises Shivaji. He says, “The battle of Pawankhind has been lost in the mainstream media. The response to the film has been heart-warming. To play your own hero in films is an uplifting feeling.”

The actor, who was also seen in Hindi films, including Tere Bin Laden (2010), Shanghai (2012) and Bhavesh Joshi Superhero (2018), confirms that the makers are hoping to complete the next four films of the eight-film franchise in another year.

“Since the plan is to make a few more movies around the iconic character, we cannot be frivolous in our personal lives [because] even one insignificant thing can be picked up and blown out of proportion,” he says, adding that the rule, however, doesn’t apply when taking up negative roles.

“I can play any role that I want, even if it is completely opposite to what I play in the historical. Marathi audiences understand that this is a film; I am playing a character.” The actor is set to play the negative lead in Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files that releases this Friday.
