Veteran singer Suman Kalyanpur passes away at 89

Mumbai: Weeks after Asha Bhosle passed away April 12, India lost another stalwart singer Suman Kalyanpur at age 89 on Sunday May 31. Her voice bore such striking similarity to that of melody queen Lata Mangeshkar that common listeners sometimes mistook one for the other.

Born Suman Hemmady on January 28, 1937, in Dhaka (undivided India), she went on to make a glorious career as a playback singer in Hindi and Marathi apart from a few other Indian languages. Her non-film songs span bhajans, ghazals and Marathi abhang and bhavgeet.

After completing school from St Columba, Mumbai, an artistic Suman enrolled in the JJ School of Art to learn painting. She went on to learn vocal music from Pt Keshavrao Bhole, Ustad Khan Abdul Rehman Khan and Master Navrang.

Her early successes came in two films Shukrachi Chandni and Mangu (1954) followed by a colourful pyramid layered with Sharaabi sharaabi yeh saawan ka mausam, Rahein na rahein hum, Aajkal tere mere pyar ke charche, Na na karte pyaar, Na tum hamein jaano, Parbaton ke pedon par and Nimbonichya zhaada maage. Her duets with Mohammed Rafi peaked in the early 1960s, driven by the Lata-Rafi rift.

As news of her death broke Sunday, NCP leader Sharad Pawar and singer Fayyaz were among the first to express condolence.

Pawar said, "The news of the passing of Suman Kalyanpur is extremely heartbreaking. With her sweet, melodious, and soul-stirring voice, she enriched the world of Indian music. Her immortal songs in Hindi, Marathi, and numerous other regional languages have reigned supreme over the emotional realms of generations. With her demise, the curtains are drawn on an era of gold in Indian classical and light music. I offer my heartfelt tribute to her and extend my condolences to her family."

Suman had married businessman Ramanand Kalyanpur in 1958. She is survived by her daughter Charu Agny and son-in-law Manoj Agny.

After news of singer Suman Kalyanpur’s death came in on Sunday night, one noticed two common reactions. One was that she was the closest to sound like Lata Mangeshkar, and the other was that she didn’t get the accolades she deserved.

Both responses may be justified, but the fact remains that Kalyanpur had some iconic hits in the 1960s. Even today, songs like Na Tum Hamein Jaano (Baat Ek Raat Ki, 1962), Tumne Pukaara (Rajkumar, 1964), Na Na Karte Pyar (Jab Jab Phool Khile, 1965), and the super-hit Aajkal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche (Brahmachari, 1968) rule radio shows and talent competitions.

The Padma Bhushan awardee passed away in Mumbai at the age of 89, following old age-related issues. Her death comes seven weeks after that of Asha Bhosle, and is thus seen as the definitive end of the Golden Era. Though Kalyanpur is best remembered as a Hindi playback singer, she was also admired for her Marathi bhavgeet and bhajans, Punjabi shabd and wedding songs, and tunes in Bengali, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, and other regional languages. Her rendition of the Marathi devotional song, Keshava Madhava, is an audience favourite.

Born Suman Hemmady in Dhaka on January 28, 1937, she moved to Mumbai with her family when she was six. She took formal training in singing and painting. She got an offer from All India Radio in 1952, and sang in the Marathi film Shukrachi Chandni the following year. In 1954, she sang in Mangu and Darwaza.

After marriage, her husband Ramanand Kalyanpur encouraged her to pursue her singing career. The hits came in the first half of the 1960s, with Garjat Barsat, a duet with Kamal Barot in Barsat Ki Raat (1960), the Dil Ek Mandir (1963) title track, Ajahun Na Aaye Balma in Sanjh Aur Savera (1964), and Mere Mehboob Na Ja in Noor Mahal (1965).

During this time, many had noticed how similar Kalyanpur’s voice texture and style of delivery was to Mangeshkar’s, and often listeners found it difficult to differentiate between the two. It began when they sang Kabhi Aaj Kabhi Kal in Chand (1959), but became more noticeable when Kalyanpur got many songs with Mohammed Rafi after his four-year fallout with Mangeshkar in 1964. In Mamta (1966), Mangeshkar was hugely admired for Rahen Na Rahen Hum, and very few people knew the alternate version was sung by Kalyanpur.

She slowed down in the 1970s, and subsequently kept a low profile. In the few interviews she gave, she attributed her destiny for not getting the attention she may have deserved, also saying her songs were dropped from some films. Of course, the melodies she has left behind fill a treasure trove.

Politicians, celebs, thousands of Lata Mangeshkar fans paid their last respects at Shivaji Park; veteran singer gets a 21-gun salute

Farewell, Nightingale!

THE TIMES OF INDIA (February 7, 2022)

Mumbai: At 8:12 am Lata Mangeshkar, the soul of Indian music, battling Coronavirus and related complications for 29 days, breathed her last at Breach Candy Hospital at age 92 at 8. 12 am on Sunday.

Her passing came a day after Saraswati Puja, which is dedicated to the goddess of music. While PM Narendra Modi flew down to Mumbai for the state funeral which was held at Shivaji Park, thousands of Mumbaikars lined the route from Lata’s Prabhu Kunj, Pedder Road, residence to Shivaji Park when the body, draped in a tricolour, was carried in an open, flower-bedecked army truck to bid farewell to their favourite singer.

CM Uddhav Thackeray awarded the singer a state funeral at the maidan, where such a singular honour was last given to his father, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

The Centre declared two days of national mourning, while the state government announced a public holiday on Monday. The national flag atop Mantralaya was lowered to half-staff as a mark of respect.

Guardian minister Aaditya Thackeray took stock of funeral arrangements on site. BMC received special permission from the state to perform the cremation at Shivaji Park. Arrangements were made on a 2,000 sq ft area. Traffic was regulated en route and 2,700 police personnel deployed for bandobast from Breach Candy and Prabhu Kunj to Shivaji Park.

Earlier, Lata Mangeshkar’s body was escorted by the Thackerays, including MNS leader Raj Thackeray, from hospital to her nearby residence at 1 pm. Here the body was draped in the tricolour. Lata’s siblings Asha Bhosle and Meena, Usha and Hridaynath Mangeshkar boarded the bedecked truck bearing the body, and nephews and nieces walked beside the cortege.

Luminaries led by NCP chief Sharad Pawar, actor Amitabh Bachchan, lyricist Javed Akhtar and film-maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali visited the house to commiserate, while scores of music celebrities, apart from actor Shah Rukh Khan and former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, arrived for the cremation. The Dadar Vyapari Sangh too shut shops in the area after 5:30 pm.

Modi’s cavalcade entered Shivaji Park around 6:25 pm. He placed a wreath, circumambulated the body and met with the family before leaving. CM Thackeray, who is recovering from a surgery, made an exit shortly after. Around 6:45 pm, Lata’s body was placed upon a bed of sandalwood. The tricolour drape was folded back from her person. At 7:00 pm, the chanting of mantras began as firewood and ghee was placed upon the pyre. At 7:16 pm, her sibling Hridaynath lit the pyre, supported by his older son Adinath. The moment marked the end of an era in the history of modern India.

Her younger brother, Hridaynath and his son Aadinath, and her sister Asha Bhosle conducted the last rites at 7:16 pm. A makeshift funeral pyre made out of concrete slabs on a raised platform was built for the funeral.

Before Mangeshkar’s body was kept aboard the truck, which was decorated with flowers and had a huge photograph of the singer, the police and military personnel gave a ceremonial salute and a band played the national anthem.

Several Bollywood celebrities had arrived at her residence, including Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Anupam Kher, Shraddha Kapoor, Aamir Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Bhagyashree, Bhushan Kumar, Javed Akhtar, Anuradha Paudwal, Govinda, Javed Akhtar, directors Madhur Bhandarkar, Ashutosh Gowariker and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and music composer Shankar Mahadevan.

Sharad Pawar defends NCP MP’s role as Nathuram Godse in film

THE TIMES OF INDIA (January 22, 2022)

Mumbai: Facing flak for playing Nathuram Godse in an upcoming film, NCP MP Amol Kolhe on Friday said he never endorsed the views and actions of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin, while NCP chief Sharad Pawar said Kolhe needed to be seen as an actor. Pawar added Kolhe was not with NCP when he played the role. The film was shot in 2017, while Kolhe joined NCP later.

NCP minister Jitendra Awhad had targeted Kolhe over the issue, and BJP had sought to know the actor-turned-MP’s “exact stand on Godse. ”

Kolhe, MP from Shirur who was earlier with Shiv Sena, issued a video message on Friday. “It seems many people have got hurt because of my role as Godse in the Hindi movie 'Why I Killed Gandhi'. I have never endorsed the act of Godse or his views against Mahatma Gandhi,” he said.

Explaining the circumstances behind accepting the role, he said after playing Chhatrapati Shivaji in a TV serial, he wanted to play Chhatrapati Sambhaji on TV or in a film. Kolhe, who is an MBBS graduate, said he received an offer for a serial on Sambhaji, but the shooting got stalled after so me days.

Around this time, in 2017, he got the offer to play Godse in the film directed by Ashok Tyagi, he said. Actors like late Nilu Phule or Pran played negative roles in films but in real life they were progressive, Kolhe said. “I repeat that I do not endorse the ideology or views of Godse,” he said, adding he did not even promote the film.

“In 2017, as an actor it was my need to get a role in films. It should be understood in that context,” he said.

State Congress president Nana Patole on Friday said his party will not tolerate glorification of Gandhi’s assassin and added it would have been better if Kolhe had avoided playing the role. Patole said though Kolhe is an artiste, he is also MP of a party and is expected to act more responsibly.

State BJP chief Chandrakant Patil said Kolhe should clarify his “exact stand on Godse and his views”, because his leader Sharad Pawar did not approve of Godse’s views. “BJP is totally against Godse and his actions,” Patil added.

Earlier, Awhad had said that even if Kolhe had played Godse in his capacity as actor, “it is indeed an endorsement of Godse’s views.”

Maharashtra NCP chief Jayant Patil had defended Kolhe.

Cruise drugs case: Pune police step up hunt for NCB witness K P Gosavi

Cruise drugs case: Pune police step up hunt for NCB witness KP Gosavi

Following the strong statements by the top leaders, the Pune police who had issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against Gosavi, arrested his former PA
Faizan Khan (MID-DAY; October 19, 2021)

The Pune police have sped up their hunt to find the Narcotics Control Bureau’s (NCB) panch witness K P Gosavi, after Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray attacked the agency in his Dussehra rally speech for targetting celebrities. If sources in the government are to be believed, the Pune police are also going to find how he became the panch witness in the case of Aryan Khan, and if the claim of NCB is true that he was not known to them.

The police have arrested Gosavi’s former PA and are trying to find him with her help.

The tussle between the state government and the union government has been on for the past two years. The state government has accused the union government of using Central agencies to destabilize it. Nationalist Congress Party (NCB) supremo Sharad Pawar in a press conference recently also spoke about cabinet minister Nawab Malik's son-in-law's arrest saying he was allegedly framed by the agency.

Following the strong statements by the top leaders, the Pune police who had issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against Gosavi, arrested the former PA and a wanted accused in a 2018 cheating case in which Gosavi is absconding. The PA, identified as Sherbano Qureshi, was arrested by Faraskhana police on Monday and has been remanded in police custody till October 23. "She was one of the wanted accused in the case and we arrested her after getting reliable information," said Satish Govekar, ACP Faraskhana.

According to Pune police, Gosavi, Qureshi and others were booked in the cheating case, where they gave false advertisements on social media site claiming to provide jobs in Malaysia and other countries. The complainant was cheated of Rs. 3.09 lakh. "The money has gone to the account of Qureshi and she was shown as wanted in the case after the charge sheet was filed in 2018," a police office said.

Qureshi worked with Gosavi for few months in 2018 and was being paid Rs. 10,000 per month. The police is trying to find the whereabouts of Gosavi with the help of Qureshi.

Was Gosavi in touch with NCB?
According to sources in the government, if Pune police manage to track down Gosavi, they will also check how he became the panch witness in the case, despite the fact that he is an absconding accused and has multiple cases registered against him in Pune, Thane and Mumbai. In one case, he was accquited by the court. The police will check whether Gosavi was in touch with any NCB officer and worked as an informer. If the police gets details of the cruise drug case, they will share them with the concerned department of the state government.

Gosavi's name was exposed by Malik when he gave a press conference that he (Gosavi) and a member of the BJP, Manish Bhanushali, escorted Aryan to the NCB's office. Malik claimed that the case was fabricated. The NCB said the statement made by Malik is prejudiced and baseless. The state government believes that Gosavi is an important link to the cruise drug case in which actor Shah Rukh Khan's son was arrested by the agency.

Theatres seek service charge on tickets

Maharashtra unlock 5.0, Maharashtra coronavirus latest updates, Maharashtra covid cases, Maharashtra multiplexes closed

Bhavika Jain & Somit Sen | TNN (THE TIMES OF INDIA; October 19, 2021)

Mumbai: A delegation each of transporters and theatre owners and film exhibitors met chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday seeking concessions such as permission to levy a service charge on cinema tickets and exemption from taxes and licence fees to offset pandemic-induced losses in revenue.

The meetings were attended by NCP chief Sharad Pawar. The transporters including bus, tempo, truck, tanker operators sought exemption from annual motor vehicle tax, waiver of motor tax on vehicles transporting to schools and religious places, and provisions for parking spaces across the state. They also demanded lifting of the 10 to 16-hour ban on entry of heavy vehicles in major cities and reduction of police powers to inspect public service vehicles.

Thackeray said a solution will be worked out to address the crisis faced by them. He also directed the administration to ensure adequate parking spots of these vehicles and also said trauma centres will be set up at check posts.

Maharashtra Rajya Truck Tempo Tankers Bus Vahatuk Mahasangh president Prasanna Patwardhan said: "We expect lot of relief measures from government as transporters and bus operators are facing huge difficulties due to Covid-19 pandemic and diesel inflation. We are glad that the CM agreed to set up trauma care and other facilities at 22 border check posts of Maharashtra. It will really help transporters in getting urgent medical care during serious mishaps on highways besides offering facilities for parking etc."

Another delegation of the Cinema Owners and Exhibitors Association demanded that the state provide concessions for renewal of licenses as well as free renewal of cinema licenses, and permission to levy a service charge of Rs 25 per ticket. It has also sought easing of restrictions on the occupancy limit, which has been set at 50% for each show. Cinema halls have been allowed to re-open in the state from October 22.

"Unless full occupancy is allowed in halls, large budget movies will not be released as they will not be financially feasible then. The industry will not come to normalcy unless mega movies release and start doing pre-Covid business," said Prakash Chaphalkar, secretary of Multiplex Association of India.

Thackeray said appropriate solutions will be worked out in coordination with the finance department to address issues of single-screen cinema halls that are facing financial difficulties. He urged theatre owners to mandate safety checks, including on electric networks, before reopening for screenings.

THE TIMES OF INDIA (June 7, 2021)

Mumbai: Legendary actor Dilip Kumar was admitted to Hinduja Hospital at Khar on Sunday morning after he experienced breathing difficulty. NCP president Sharad Pawar called on the actor to inquire about his health condition. The 98-year-old was admitted around 8.30 am. Sources said his condition was stable. “He was unwell today morning and had breathlessness. He is here at Khar Hinduja non-Covid hospital for investigation,” his wife Saira Banu told PTI.

The family also posted an update on Dilip Kumar’s Twitter handle, saying he was admitted for routine tests and investigations. “Dilip Sahab has been admitted …for routine tests and investigations. The doctors are likely to assess his health condition on Monday and take a call on the further course of treatment.

Pawar’s tweet said, “Visited legendary actor Dilip Kumar at Khar Hinduja Hospital to check on his health and treatment with veteran actress Saira Banu. I wish Dilip Kumar ji speedy recovery and good health”.

The thespian has been admitted to the same hospital several times last month for health checkups. Kumar, who made his acting debut with ‘Jwar Bhata’ in 1944, has appeared in several iconic films in a career spanning over five decades. He was last seen on the big screen in 1998.

Sonu Sood meets Sharad Pawar, discusses hotel row

Chaitanya Marpakwar (THE TIMES OF INDIA; January 14, 2021)

Mumbai: Amid the row over alleged conversion of a residential building into a hotel in Juhu, actor Sonu Sood met NCP supremo Sharad Pawar at his residence on Wednesday.

An NCP functionary said the meeting lasted an hour and Sood briefed Pawar on the controversy over his hotel.

While the exact reason for Sood’s meeting with Pawar was not known, it raised eyebrows since it came days after the BMC filed a police complaint against Sood for allegedly converting a six-storey residential building in Juhu into a hotel without the required permissions.

The BMC had asked the police to take cognisance of the offence under the Maharashtra Region and Town Planning Act for unauthorised additions, alterations and change of user.

“We don’t know the exact reason for the meeting. But it is learnt that Sood did talk about the way the BMC had issued a notice to him and filed a police complaint. Sood reiterated that he had not done anything illegal and explained how the hotel had been used for housing Covid-19 warriors during the pandemic,” the NCP functionary said.

The BMC on Wednesday urged the Bombay high court to dismiss the actor’s petition seeking to restrain it from carrying out demolition at his property. The actor moved the high court after the Dindoshi city civil court refused to restrain the BMC from taking action against alleged unauthorised alterations at the building on A B Nair Road.

Kangana Ranaut's bungalow demolition row: Did Shiv Sena walk straight into BJP trap?

Sena-run civic body's decision to demolish Kangana Ranaut's home office after her vitriolic attack seems so harebrained that even Sharad Pawar, MVA ally and master tactician, is irked
MID-DAY (September 10, 2020)

The demolition team and police seen outside Kangana Ranaut's office on Wednesday. Pic/Shadab KhanAfter the war of words between actor Kangana Ranaut and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, the action in the ugly drama following Sushant Singh Rajput's death moved on ground, with the BMC initiating demolition of the actor's office it deemed illegal. Ruling partner Sharad Pawar said the timing of the action will raise more questions than answers.

The civic body started demolishing the alleged illegal constructions done at actress Kangana Ranaut's Pali Hill office on Wednesday morning but was stopped in its tracks by the Bombay High Court by noon which issued a stay order.

Meanwhile, there were 52,154 complaints against illegal structures across the city between January 2016 and July 2019, as per BMC's reply to an RTI application. Till last year, the BMC acted on 12,157 complaints.

On Wednesday, a team from the H West ward broke the wall and gate of the office during the demolition. Ranaut had approached the court challenging the notice and sought a stay. The high court also questioned the BMC on why it entered the property when the owner was not present at home.

An inspection of the office was done on Monday and a stop-work notice was pasted outside it on Tuesday morning. The notice was served under Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act which gives citizens 24 hours to produce relevant permissions.

On Tuesday evening, Ranaut's lawyer, in his reply to the BMC, asked for more time for the actress to furnish relevant information. On Wednesday, the corporation stuck a fresh notice saying it was not satisfied with the response and that the demolition will be carried out at her own risk and cost.

NCP chief and MVA architect Sharad Pawar said on Wednesday, "The timing of the demolition would raise doubts in the current situation (the actor's row with the Shiv Sena). I do not know the nature of the structural illegality of the office space and illegal work isn't a new thing in the city."

Opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis said, "This is an act of revenge and cowardice. You cannot use government force to maim a person who speaks against you. This has never happened in the history of Maharashtra and the people here will never accept such an act."

94k Plaints In 43 Months
In its reply to an RTI application by activist Shakil Ahmed Shaikh, the BMC said they have received 94,851 complaints of illegal structures in the past three years.

In the span of 43 months from 2016 to 2019, 42,697 were duplicate complaints. Out of the 52,154 unique complaints, maximum complaints were received from L (Kurla) ward at 4,966. K west (Andheri W, Vileparle W) ward received 3,680 complaints and P North (Malad) ward had 3,690 complaints.

The corporation closed 7,230 complaints without notice and issued notices to 21,873 structures. Out of these, 5,461 structures were demolished and 12,157 complaints were closed till July 2019.

"Shiv Sena is taking action against Ranaut's office just to retaliate. There were so many disasters due to illegal constructions — Kamala Mills fire, Bhanu Farsan Mart, Hotel City Kinara, Sai-Siddhi buildings. But the BMC is not keen on taking action against these illegalities," said Shaikh. He added that the BMC spends at least Rs 20 crore on demolitions annually. And annually, an average of 15,000 structures are served notices, while demolition is carried out against 10 to 20 per cent of them.

14 Booked For Protests
While local police were deployed at the actress's office during the demolition to prevent law and order problems, a DCP rank officer was a part of the team that escorted the actress from the airport to her Khar residence.

"It is our duty to protect every citizen and we are committed to it. After her arrival, there were a lot of people protesting against her so we escorted her from another gate of the airport," a senior IPS officer told mid-day.

Police teams continue to be deployed at the actress's office and residence.

Khar police also registered a case against 14 people for unlawful assembly and violating the lockdown as they protested against BMC's demolition drive outside the office. According to the police, they were allegedly brought by a national TV news reporter to demonstrate in support of Ranaut. The protesters came with placards with the slogans #BharatForKangna #IndiaForKangna #WarriorsForSSR. "We are investigating the role of a journalist who brought them at the spot for his coverage. The TV channel was carrying the news with the same hashtags as seen on the protesters' placards," the officer added.

No Quarantine
Mayor Kishori Pednekar said that BMC's action is for the illegal structure and there is nothing wrong in it.

Also, P Velarasu, additional commissioner, said that the actress was exempted from quarantine as there is an online exemption application stating that she is on a short visit. Since she is staying for less than a week, she is exempted under the short term visitor category.

Sharad Pawar expresses displeasure over ‘hasty’ demolition of Kangana Ranaut's bungalow

Demolition gave Kangana Ranaut unnecessary publicity: Sharat Pawar
Prafulla Marpakwar (THE TIMES OF INDIA; September 10, 2020)

Mumbai: NCP chief Sharad Pawar has expressed disquiet over the manner in which the BMC demolished a portion of the Bandra bungalow of actor Kangana Ranaut.

The NCP leader has taken the view that the civic action was in haste, and as a result, drew censure from the Bombay high court.

“I have no information on the illegal construction. Illegal and unauthorised constructions are not new for BMC. But questions have been raised, in view of the current situation and timing of the demolition. Certainly, BMC has its own rules; the officials involved in the demolition process must have followed the procedure,” Pawar said.

Later in the day, Pawar had a prolonged meeting with Uddhav Thackeray at Varsha, CM’s official residence. According to reports, they discussed the Ranaut issue, the Supreme Court verdict on Maratha reservation, and the Covid pandemic.

While Congress did not react to Pawar’s statement, senior NCP leaders endorsed his views. “In Mumbai, there are 95,000 unauthorised structures, but BMC is taking action selectively. The demolition has had an adverse impact on the MVA government,” a senior NCP minister told TOI.

Pawar did not name Ranaut, but indicated that undue importance was being given to her comments. “...People of Maharashtra are aware of the confidence and professionalism of the Mumbai as well as Maharashtra Police. If someone compares the force with those in Pakistan or any other country, there is no need to take cognizance. Media should not give undue publicity to such statements.”

On the threat calls received by him, Pawar said home minister Anil Deshmukh has given him the details. “According to information from the home minister, I have received seven calls. In the past too, I had received similar calls, but he never attached importance to them.”

Governor summons principal advisor to CM, criticises ‘inept handling of Kangana episode’

Prafulla Marpakwar (THE TIMES OF INDIA; September 10, 2020)

Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari showed his displeasure over chief minister Uddhav Thackeray’s “inept handling of the Kangana Ranaut episode”, particularly the haste shown by the Shiv Sena-controlled BMC in demolishing sections of the actor’s Bandra bungalow. Koshyari is likely to submit a report to the Centre on the controversy.

According to reports, Koshyari summoned the CM’s principal advisor Ajoy Mehta to discuss the situation arising out of Ranaut’s statements and demolition of bungalow. “The governor expressed displeasure over the inept handling of the Ranaut episode. Her office was demolished a day after she issued statements against the state government. Mehta was asked to convey Koshyari’s sentiments to Thackeray,” a senior official said.

Koshyari and Thackeray have been at loggerheads ever since the former took over the gubernatorial assignment in 2019. First there was the prolonged row over Thackeray’s nomination on the legislative council as a governor nominee—he was ultimately elected after PM Modi intervened—followed by the issue over conducting final-year exams. The latest flashpoint is the 12 nominations for legislative council seats.

Mumbai: Kangana Ranaut landed in Mumbai on Wednesday, bearing an arsenal of tweets against chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and BMC which kept circulating in social media through the day. She also posted videos of the demolition of unauthorised extensions in her bungalow, quoted the Bombay high court stay order in her favour, and questioned the silence of “fancy feminists, Bullywood activists, candle march groups and award vapsi gang” which have “no comments on what High Court said about open murder of law and order in Maharashtra”. “Well done, thank you for proving me right always, you all deserve the treatment you get from me," she tweeted.

“Such is the wheel of life. Remember time does not remain the same forever. In fact, I feel you have obliged me. I am now feeling what Kashmiri Pandits must have felt. I will make a film on Ayodhya as well as on Kashmir,” she went on.

At the airport, when she landed, Shiv Sena activists, most of them ground staff of the airport authority, had organised a protest, sources said. With saffron and even black flags, displaying placards with a message condemning the actress over her remarks, they shouted slogans against her. There were also a few from the Republican Party of India (A) and Karni Sena who had gathered in support of her.

Union minister Ramdas Athawale had declared that his RPI workers would provide protection to Kangana during her stay in Mumbai. The sloganeering went on for 40-45 minutes. However, all activists dispersed after they realised she had left the airport through another exit amid police protection.

Earlier, images of her at Chandigarh airport surrounded by a phalanx of security guards drew howls of dismay and cheers in equal measure on social media. Many lamented “wastage of taxpayer money” while others drew comparisons with similar favours done by previous dispensations. The actor was granted Y-Plus security by the Union home ministry in the light of the present controversy.

As for her tweets, they continued intermittently through the day. She said no due process was followed by the BMC in its actions and that the demolitions at her bungalow had damaged her furniture. “Paid sources of Maha government are spreading fake info, BMC never sent any notice to me until yesterday, in fact I got all the documents cleared myself from BMC for renovations. @mybmc at least have the courage to stand by your audacity. Why lie now,” she said.

She claimed a notice against another property owned by her “was not just to me but to entire building... this is not my flat issue but a building issue which builder needs to deal with... this building belongs to Sharad Pawar we bought the flat from his partner so he is answerable for this not me...”

BJP supporters rallied in her favour, some calling her a “lioness” that subdued the state, others offering to back her in her fight.

BJP slams Maha govt, CM for demolition, calls it vindictive act, case of intolerance

New Delhi: Senior BJP functionaries, including Union ministers, on Wednesday slammed the Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government over razing of some “illegal alterations” at the bungalow of actress Kangana Ranaut in Mumbai, calling it an example of “intolerance” and “vindictive action” against a woman who was not afraid of speaking the truth.

“An immoral, intolerant government which intimidates its people will perish on its own. A vindictive government can’t threaten its people for too long,” said water resources minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

Senior BJP member and former general secretary (organisation) Ram Lal tweeted: ‘The foundations of truth can’t be shaken by hammers of lies’. BJP’s IT cell head Amit Malviya shared data about performance of the Uddhav Thackeray government, alleging how the “Mahaagadi” government’s priorities are misplaced.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said Kangana lost a few bricks but the Thackeray government lost its reputation across the country. “One should ponder as if bricks are more valuable than reputation,” he added.

Party’s secretary Satya Kumar claimed BMC had not taken action against illegal constructions but action against Kangana was taken out of vendetta. “As per a Maharashtra govternment affidavit to Bombay HC, there were around 2.5 lakh illegal constructions in Mumbai, including small buildings to multi-storeyed apartment complexes. How many of them have been demolished, Uddhavji?” Kumar asked.

Goswami was charged with using derogatory language against CM, NCP chief; Ranaut was charged for comparing Mumbai to PoK
Dharmendra Jore (MID-DAY; September 9, 2020)

The Maha Vikas Aghadi members in the Maharashtra Legislature have moved a breach of privilege motion against the editor of a private news channel, Arnab Goswami, and Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut.

Senior Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik submitted the motion against Goswami in the Assembly, charging him for using derogatory language against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) boss Sharad Pawar.

Congress veteran Bhai Jagtap filed the motion against Kangana in the upper house for comparing Mumbai to Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Both personalities have also been accused of defaming the Mumbai police.

The presiding officers hadn't decided on accepting the motion for further action which includes cross examination of the people involved by a privilege committee of the houses. The committee recommends punishment, including imprisonment, for the guilty. In some instances, journalists, activists and bureaucrats have been punished.

MVA Vs BJP
Sarnaik's motion was supported by parliamentary affair minister Anil Parab, who said Arnab acted like a judge and used foul language against the CM and Pawar. "He is a tin pot journalist, who has been contracted (by some people) to malign the image of our leaders. If this house can make a law to protect journalists from violence, it can also take action against such a journalist," said Parab.

Parab asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) whether it gets hurt when someone insults the prime minister. "You should support our move and condemn such journalists," he said. Senior minister Chhagan Bhujbal also spoke in support of the motion. But prompted by certain remarks from the MVA side, the opposition took up a noisy protest. The house was adjourned twice before Deputy speaker Narhari Zirwal said due procedure will be followed.

'What About The PM And Governor?'
Debating the supplementary demand later in the day, opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis asked the government if it wanted to suppress the media by using legislative tools. "We don't support derogatory language against the CM or any other leader. Will you apply the same yardstick to Saamana (Sena's mouthpiece) that uses highly objectionable words against the PM and the Maharashtra governor?

We definitely want the CM to be respected, but we don't like your double standard in respect with the PM and governor," said the ex-CM, adding that he could say the Mumbai police was the best after working five years as the home minister, but didn't understand who put them under pressure to delay and divert the Sushant Singh Rajput death probe. Fadnavis reminded the house that (the CM) Thackeray had also insulted the police by saying that "their ability was restricted to the job of cleaning utensils'.

John to play dreaded gangster; Anil Kapoor to play Bal Thackeray in Sanjay Gupta's next?

Priya Gupta (BOMBAY TIMES; February 13, 2014)

Sanjay Gupta’s films are about gangsters, real life incidents and style. We have now learnt that Sanjay is ready to shoot his next film titled Mumbai Saga, which again is based on a real-life gangster of the 80s and the 90s, who changed the skyline of Mumbai. This gangster, being played by John Abraham, will be shown from the age of 22, where he was a vegetable vendor, to the age of 45, when he became a narco smuggler and the ganglord of Mumbai, who ruled the businesses of drugs, arms and real estate. He was responsible for breaking the strong nexus between the mills and the politicians at that time. He, in effect, became the broker for builders and was responsible for buildings being built in place of mills. But he did something so terrible that he had to get his face changed without which he would have been caught. He had turned gangster for the sake of his brother, who he wanted should become a chemical engineer from London. While his brother did become that, ironically, he finally became a gangster himself.

Great actors Anil Kapoor and Manoj Bajpayee return in this Sanjay Gupta film. Interestingly, Anil will be seen playing the leader of the ruling political party then, who was no less than the tiger of Mumbai’s jungle. It’s a no-brainer to guess who that could be.

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 13, 2014)

Amitabh Bachchan’s character in Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar (2005) and Sarkar Raj (20008) was modelled on the late Bal Thackeray. Now the buzz is that Anil Kapoor’s role in Sanjay Gupta’s ambitious project, Mumbai Saga, has strong shades of Thackeray.
S Hussain Zaidi has penned the story and and Milap Zaveri is writing the dialogues. Milap had written the dialogue of Gupta’s last film Shootout At Wadala too which was based on Zaidi’s book Dongri to Dubai. Interestingly, Prashant Pandey, who crafted Big B's character in Sarkar Raj, has been working on the Mumbai Saga screenplay with Robin Bhatt.
A source close to the development revealed, “Besides Balasaheb, Anil’s character also borrows elements from Vasai-Virar strongman Bhai Thakur and NCP Chief Sharad Pawar. Sanjay is working closely with Hussain and Milap and is providing valuable inputs to build the character.”
When contacted, Gupta said, “It’s too early to talk about the character since the film is still being written. But yes, it is inspired by some real politicians who were instrumental in converting Bombay to Mumbai and changing the city’s landscape.”
