Samiullah Khan (MID-DAY; August 9, 2026)
Well-known filmmaker Shakeel Noorani, 73, who has written, produced and directed films including Bade Dil Wala (1999) and Joru Ka Ghulam (2000), has been arrested by the Malvani Police in connection with a alleged rape and sexual assault case filed by a 33-year-old actress.
The police have alleged that Noorani sexually assaulted the woman after calling her to his Malvani residence on the pretext of discussing an upcoming film project. The case also involves allegations of administering a sedative and subsequently threatening the woman with an alleged video. According to police sources, Noorani was traced to a farmhouse in Medha, Satara district, and arrested in the early hours of August 8 before being brought to Mumbai.
The Malvani Police have registered a case under Sections 64(2)(M), 123, 351(2) and 88 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Allegations date back to 2016
According to the sources, the actress first met Noorani at an entertainment award event in Lokhandwala in 2016. She alleged that Noorani, who had directed Bade Dil Wala and Joru Ka Ghulam, spoke to her about an upcoming project and asked her to contact him for work.
The woman in the FIR alleged that she later visited his Malvani residence to read a script. According to her complaint, Noorani allegedly gave her a drink after which fell unconscious.
She alleged that when she regained consciousness, Noorani showed her a video on his mobile phone and allegedly threatened to circulate it if she approached the police or informed her family.
The actress further alleged that Noorani subsequently used the purported video to threaten her and sexually assault her repeatedly and on multiple occasions.
The survivor’s account gets even more distressing as she has further alleged that Noorani repeatedly gave her contraceptive pills following the alleged sexual encounters.
According to the sources, the woman returned to Mumbai in 2026 while seeking financial assistance for medical treatment.
Traced to Satara
During the investigation, police allegedly learnt that Noorani was staying at a farmhouse in the Medha area of Satara district. A local police team located him and took him to Medha Police Station, following which Malvani Police officials reached Satara and formally arrested him. According to the police, Noorani was medically examined at the Rural Hospital in Medha before being brought to Mumbai.
‘Falsely implicated’
Advocate Vikas Singh Goar, representing Noorani, has maintained that his client has been falsely implicated. “The allegations made by the actress are yet to be established before a court, and the investigation is underway. Noorani is presumed innocent unless proven guilty,” he said.
Custody till August 12
Police sought his custody to further investigate the allegations, recover and examine the alleged video and ascertain whether the alleged offences took place at other locations. The Borivili holiday court “remanded Noorani in police custody till August 12”.

THE TIMES OF INDIA (April 16, 2017)
Actor Sanjay Dutt's
non-appearance on the sets of 'Jaan Ki Baazi' had led to a case against
him in 2013 and on Saturday, his non-appearance in court resulted in a
bailable warrant.
A metropolitan magistrate in Andheri had issued summons to Dutt to appear before it in a private complaint filed by film producer Shakeel Noorani in 2013. Noorani's lawyer Neeraj Gupta made a plea for issuance of non-bailable warrant against him on Saturday. Gupta contended that after his release from prison last February, Dutt did not appear in court on the “last four dates“. The magistrate then issued a bailable warrant and posted the matter for hearing on August 29.
Noorani has alleged that he received threats from the underworld at Dutt's behest. His case is that while Dutt took a signing amount of Rs 50 lakh, he completed only two days of shooting and never appear after that.
Dutt's spokesperson said, “This case has been going on since a long time and the present situation has arisen because of a communication lapse between our lawyers and us. We respect the urgency shown by the court regarding our attendance and we would take immediate measure to rectify the situation.“

Sanjay Dutt-Noorani dispute: HC order renders IMPPA toothless

The Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association (IMPPA), one of the leading bodies of Hindi film producers, has been rendered completely toothless, as far as legal enforceability of its orders is concerned.
The court stated that the organisation is merely a “private tribunal” and its decision in disputes is not a “legally enforceable remedy.”
The court’s further observation could sound the death knell for the body as Justice Colabawalla added that any “arbitration agreement” spelt out from the rules and by-laws of IMPPA, will make no difference unless the person against whom such an order is passed is a member of the body.
As only film producers are IMPPA members, none of the organisation’s dictates will affect the other members of the film industry, including actors, directors and technicians among others.
It all started when Noorani approached the Bombay High Court seeking to execute an order passed by IMPPA against Dutt in January 2010. Noorani had approached IMPAA claiming that Dutt had accepted an advance of Rs 50 lakh to act in one of his productions, titled Jaan Ki Baazi. The actor allegedly shot for a few days and then did not allot any further dates to the film. According to IMPAA’s order, Dutt was supposed to allot 30 days of shooting to Noorani within 15 days from the date of receipt of the order. In case he failed, he had to return the remuneration, plus Rs. 1.53 crores alleged losses caused to Noorani as he had to stop production of the movie. In October 2010, Noorani approached the High Court’s execution department, seeking the payments or the attachment of Dutt’s Pali Hill flat – the one where the actor resides with his family.
But thanks to the court’s latest order, Dutt will not be effected by any of IMPAA’s past dictates. "The respondent (Dutt) not being a member of IMPPA, nor agreeing to be bound by its rules and by-laws, would not be bound by any such agreement or decision rendered by IMPPA under it’s own rules and by-laws,” the court observed.
Seems, the decision has gone down with no opposition from the film fraternity. Producer Ramesh Taurani said that the court has always directed them to IMPAA during conflicts. “And now that the same court has stripped the organisation of its powers, we will simply abide by the court's new decision.” Senior producer Pahlaj Nihalani too said that they will abide by the new rule, while IMPAA chief T P Aggarwal chose not to respond.
