One of the big issues in the TV industry right now is non-payment of dues. While some actors talk about it, others prefer to stay silent hoping that they will get their monies at some point.
After waiting for two-and-a-half years, actors of Dastaan-E-Mohabbat Salim Anarkali are now speaking out against the production house. The show launched in October 2018 and wrapped up in just three months. However the actors say they must be paid their remuneration, because they worked on the show for almost six months.
Sonarika Bhadoria, who played Anarkali, says, “They owed me Rs. 80 lakhs, but I have only been paid Rs. 7 to Rs. 8 lakhs so far. I have taken the legal route and I hope to get what is due to me.”
Other actors who are awaiting their dues include Shahbaz Khan, Gurdip Punjj, Tassnim Sheikh and Anand Goradia. While Shahbaz, Tassnim and Gurdip have over Rs. 10 lakhs pending, Anand’s pending dues add up to five-six lakhs. All these actors kept calling the producer, Anirudh Pathak, but he did not respond. They have now approached CINTAA (Cine and TV Artistes’ Association) to look into the matter. Shahbaz, who played Akbar, says, “We had started shooting much before the show launched. It is our hard-earned money and we should get it. Every time we try reaching the producer,he doesnot respond. We are all going through tough times, some of us sitting at home without work during the pandemic.”
Tassnim says, “I feel cheated. I played my part with all diligence; I wore a 25-kilo lehenga and suffered so much weight on my body only to not receive my money! It’s sad that we have to keep contacting the production house and ask for our money.”
Gurdip echoes a similar sentiment. She says, “I had kept quiet about this issue, but now I feel it is time to speak up. There’s just no response to my messages. They say the show exceeded its budget, but then the producer should have realised that. You can’t not pay your actors because of that!”
Anand Goradia says he has gone through some difficult times personally and the money would have really helped. He says, “My mother passed away a few months ago. When she was hospitalised, I needed money for her treatment. I kept contacting the production house at that time hoping to get my dues, but I got no response.”
When we reached out to producer Anirudh Pathak, he said, “Salim Anarkali was abruptly pulled off air in three months. We incurred huge losses. After that the pandemic struck. I haven’t refused to pay, but because of the losses I incurred, I had to shut my own production house. Now, I am trying to earn as a writer and pay everyone. It will take time.”

Alok Nath who was accused of rape by producer-writer Vinta Nanda last October, and a month later expelled by Cine and TV Artistes Association (CINTAA) till further notice after a no-show at the body’s meeting on November 12, recently shot for a film, interestingly titled #Main Bhi (#MeToo in Hindi). The actor plays a judge who takes a strong stand against sexual harassment.
When contacted by Mirror, the 62-year-old actor confirmed the news, saying, “I’m not doing any films at the moment. This was something I shot for a while ago.”
He added, “Is there a problem? You sound sad that I’m doing a film. It’s a puny role for poor producers, let it release.”
Actor Khalid Siddiqui who plays one of the leads in the Nasir Khan-directed film, along with Shawar Ali and Imran Khan, informed that Alok Nath is playing a judge, who, at the end of the film, gives a speech about how molestation is wrong. Veteran actors Mukesh Khanna and Shahbaz Khan play the lawyers.
“The film deals with child molestation, a subject that hasn’t been tapped on screen often, particularly with regard to boys. My character, along with the other, are affected by incidents that change our lives. We hope the film starts a debate on the subject,” added Khalid. The film was shot in Bhopal with Sonali Raut as the female lead.
In October last year, a rape case was registered against Alok Nath by the Mumbai Police on a complaint filed by Vinta Nanda who accused him of raping her twice nearly two decades ago when they were working on the TV show Tara. After that, other actresses like Sandhya Mridul, Himani Shivpuri and Deepika Amin also came out with similar allegations against the actor, sharing their ordeals. He denied the allegations and his wife Ashu moved court against Vinta. The actor was granted anticipatory bail.

With his new film, Mukesh Jadhav is giving a back story to the author's play 'The Rats' which is remembered for its abrupt beginning and end

Mukesh Jadhav was in college
when he first read Agatha Christie's one-act play, The Rats. A decade
later, the filmmaker is giving the mystery thriller, remembered for its
abrupt beginning and end, a more fleshed out narrative with his new
thriller, Pratichayya. “I decided to give the characters a back story
and a climax,“ Mukesh reveals.
The Rats, which sees an illicit couple caught in a trap, is part of a set of three one-act plays, titled Rule of Three, which was staged in 1962. “The film circles around the fact that the human mind is capable of great evil. While most of us would be shocked to see a dead body, there are some people who can hide one for 48 hours in their own house and go about their daily routine like nothing ever happened. We're touching upon our true faces and the one we save for the world,“ Mukesh explains. “The film is a sensitive exploration of the darker side of female desire a woman's passion warped by her jealousy and sense of deprivation.“
Produced by UAE-based Desert Rose Holdings Ltd and Motion Media Arts Pvt Ltd, Pratichayya features Shreyas Talpade, Makarand Deshpande, Rahul Dev and Shahbaz Khan and is slated to release by the year-end.
Incidentally, composer Monty Sharma's score for the film which features a foot-tapping number with Turkish, Hindi and Arabic lyrics got a thumbs-up from Turkish Consul General E Sabri Ergen, who was present on the sets during filming. The diplomat invited the cast and crew to promote their film in Turkey. “It's a global film in a true sense,“ says Mukesh, adding the film features Australian actors Zenia Starr and Nicholas Brown.
