Prime Video and Netflix topped India’s 15 most-viewed Hindi streaming shows in 2024, while Disney+ Hotstar led in Tamil and Telugu, according to Ormax Media’s ‘Streaming Originals in India - The 2024 Story’ report.

The report emphasized the dominance of platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar, which collectively have an estimated 70 million subscribers. It highlighted the growing role of regional content and franchise-driven formats in shaping India’s streaming landscape.

Netflix and Prime Video each had five entries in the top 15 Hindi streaming shows. Mirzapur Season 3 was the most-watched Hindi series with 30.8 million viewers, followed by Prime Video's Panchayat Season 3 (28.2 million) and Netflix’s Heeramandi (21.5 million). The viewership estimates were based on primary data, according to Ormax.

In the non-fiction OTT category, JioCinema's Bigg Boss OTT Season 3 led with 17.8 million viewers. Netflix’s The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 1 ranked second with 15.7 million viewers, while SonyLIV's Shark Tank India Season 3 secured 12.5 million viewers.

The report also highlights a wide variety of unscripted genres, spanning TV extensions, documentaries, game shows, and reality formats driven by influencers.

Netflix also dominated Hindi direct-to-digital films claiming 11 of the top 15 spots, with Do Patti leading at 15.1 million viewers, followed by Sector 36 (13.9 million) and Sikandar Ka Muqaddar (13.5 million).

“Audiences today seek more choices—across stories, devices—and we’re here to meet that demand,” said Monika Shergill, Netflix India’s vice president, content. “The sheer convenience of streaming with improved accessibility and broadband and CTV market growth is leading to a revolution in how we consume our entertainment. Exceptional storytelling enhanced by quality subtitles and dubbing in several languages is enabling more stories to travel and be consumed by more audiences in India and around the globe."

She further noted, “At Netflix, originals like Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, Amar Singh Chamkila, The Great Indian Kapil Show, and blockbuster movie slates in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu have demonstrated how entertainment and experience can together become the key drivers of streaming growth.”

Nikhil Madhok, Head of Originals, Prime Video India, stated that Indian audiences are open to good stories regardless of language, format, or genre. He highlighted Prime Video's success in engaging audiences across languages with titles like Mirzapur Season 3, Panchayat Season 3, Inspector Rishi, and global hits like The Boys and The Rings of Power.

"We are in a unique time, a renaissance in Indian entertainment, where all kinds of stories are being told and all genres are being explored on streaming. We will continue to collaborate with the finest creators and storytellers from India and around the world to offer our customers some of the most dynamic, fresh, out-of-the-box stories," he said.

Last year, Netflix and Prime Video unveiled ambitious content slates. Netflix’s 2024 slate included 14 shows and eight films, while Prime Video India announced plans to release 70 series and films over the next two years.

In regional content, Disney+ Hotstar's Save The Tigers Season 2 (5 million viewers) and Prime Video's Inspector Rishi (4.9 million viewers) were the top Telugu and Tamil shows, respectively. Disney+ Hotstar dominated the top 10 lists in both languages, with four Telugu and seven Tamil entries.

Netflix’s Squid Game Season 2 became the most-watched international show of 2024 with 19.6 million viewers, securing its place as India’s all-time leader. Among international films, Prime Video’s Road House led with 6 million viewers.

While the report excluded YouTube Originals, it acknowledged the success of India’s Got Latent on Samay Raina’s YouTube channel, which could have ranked in the top three.

According to Ormax, the report evaluated the top original shows and films released in 2024 in Hindi, International, Telugu, and Tamil across parameters such as viewership, marketing buzz, and content strength. It focused exclusively on original content, excluding theatrical films, catch-up TV, sports, and other non-original streaming content.

Those who lauded me for 12th Fail and Sector 36 abused me for being a part of The Sabarmati Report-Vikrant Massey

Actor Vikrant Massey expecting first child with wife Sheetal Thakur?

Kanksha Vasavada (BOMBAY TIMES; December 28, 2024)

Vikrant Massey, who shocked his fans recently by announcing that he will be taking a break from films, had elaborated at a recent conclave, “The life I had always dreamt of, I finally got it, so I thought it was time to live it. I want to take a break because, at the end of the day, everything is transient, which is why I am only doing one film next year. My son was born, and I was not able to spend any quality time with him or my wife. So, I had written in that Instagram post that as an actor, son, father and husband, it was time for me to recalibrate.”

During his recent visit to Ahmedabad, Vikrant spoke to us about choosing to play unconventional characters, extreme fan reactions, fatherhood and more.

‘It was disheartening when I was abused by fans for my latest film’
Vikrant, who was lauded for his portrayal of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma in 12th Fail, shares, “I was happy with the kind of love 12th Fail got. Fan expectations had risen post that film and I expected the same love for all projects. However, doing a film like The Sabarmati Report gave me a reality check. The same people who had lauded me for 12th Fail and Sector 36 abused me for being a part of this film, which brought me back to reality.”

He adds, “When I was abused and given threats, I realized that for fans, sometimes convenience takes precedence over understanding your character. It was disheartening, but I will always focus on telling the stories that I believe in.”

‘I want to do films that people will watch even after 50 years’
Be it A Death In The Gunj, Haseen Dillruba, Gaslight, or OTT shows like Mirzapur and Broken But Beautiful, Vikrant has always explored unconventional characters. He says, “It is actually a mix of both-my conscious choice and choosing the kind of work I am offered. When I started my career, I was doing whatever projects were being offered. Somehow, I was always getting roles which were not run-of-the-mill even when I was doing television. But now, it has become my conscious choice to do such projects, as I feel I am meant to do them.”

He adds, “Be it commercial or message-driven films, I choose projects that have archival value. My father watches films that were made 50 years ago. I also want to do films that the upcoming generations would like to watch 50 years later.”

‘It is a blessing to be a father’
Vikrant and his actress-wife Sheetal Thakur, who got married in 2022, became parents to a baby boy, Vardaan, earlier this year. He tells us, “Fatherhood is the best role of my life (smiles). It is a blessing to be a father, and my son has made me a better person. Coming back home after work and seeing those eyes smiling at you is a feeling which is difficult to describe. Vardaan is the biggest gift of my life.”

Talking about how he deals with the trolls, "I ignore the trolls; comments from faceless people on social media are linked to my profession and I have to get used to it. But it’s disappointing when trolls target your family and loved ones."

Has Vikrant taken a break from OTT now? The actor says, "I haven’t stopped doing OTT projects, but I’m waiting for the right script to make a comeback. If the script is good, I will do that project irrespective of the medium."

(Crisp) Movie Review: SECTOR 36 by FENIL SETA

Sector 36, which has released today on Netflix, is the story of a serial killer and a cop. It is inspired by real events and is quite a disturbing film. It is definitely not for the faint-hearted, even though the makers imply instead of visually depicting the violence. Director Aditya Nimbalkar also scores in the dramatic scenes. A 17-minute long scene at a crucial juncture will leave viewers speechless and it is amazing that a first-timer was able to crack it so well. This scene single-handedly compensates for the shortcoming, to a large extent. Talking of minuses, the makers keep a few aspects ambiguous and that hampers the impact minimally. Vikrant Massey delivers one of the best performances of his career. We all adored him in 12th Fail and here, the audience is going to get disgusted by him and his actions. Deepak Dobriyal too puts his best foot forward and allows his silences to do talking in important scenes. Akash Khurana (Balbir Singh Bassi) and Darshan Jariwalla (DCP Jawahar Rastogi) lend able support. Kacho Ahmed (Compounder Chote Lal), Ajeet S Palawat (Constable Pathak) and Mahadev S Lakhawat (Constable Bishnoi) have limited screen time and they do very well. The others who perform ably are Baharul Islam (Bhupen Saikia), Raghav Kalra (Young Prem), Trimala Adhikari (Jyoti; Prem's wife) and Subir Bisawas (Chumki's father). All in all, Sector 36 is a disturbing and yet, a must-watch film.

My rating - **** out of 5!

RE-RELEASE SEASON CONTINUES; TUMBBAD EXPECTED TO GIVE NEW RELEASES TOUGH COMPETITION

Finally, after nearly a month, a mainstream Hindi film would be up for release – The Buckingham Murders. It stars Kareena Kapoor in the lead and it also marks her first film as a producer. It is directed by Hansal Mehta and is the story of a cop with a tragic past trying to solve a murder case. Kareena looks apt for the role and with Hansal as its director, it can be a film to watch out for. Interestingly, it is releasing in the original Hinglish version as well as the dubbed Hindi version.

Sadly, the buzz for The Buckingham Murders is very low. There’s hardly even any awareness about the film. Hence, the opening will be poor and hopefully, with good word of mouth, it’ll pick up considerably.

The film that would make the most noise this week is Tumbbad. It was released in 2018 and did a business of just Rs. 12.14 crores. Over the years, it achieved a cult following. Interestingly, the film has vanished from the internet and now, the only way to watch it is in cinemas when it re-releases tomorrow. In 2018, it had an opening of Rs. 51 lakhs. This time, it seems like it’ll have double the opening as the advances are encouraging and many shows are fast-filling. A theatre like Cinepolis, Viviana Mall, Thane is playing as many as 14 shows of the film, which is unheard of for a re-released film!

The other surprise re-release is Tujhe Meri Kasam. It was the debut of Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia Deshmukh. Many are not aware that it never got a release on OTT, TV or DVD and has a cult following in certain towns of Maharashtra. It has got limited shows and there’s curiosity among a tiny section of the audience for this film as they want to know why this film is watched 4, 5 and even 6 times by some people.

Veer-Zaara’s re-release caught attention and it now remains to be seen how it fares. Finally, the Hollywood film Speak No Evil has a limited release and will need positive reports to sustain.

On OTT, Sector 36 would drop on Netflix. It stars Vikrant Massey and Deepak Dobriyal and is produced by Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films and Jio Studios. The awareness is limited but it got a great response at a film festival recently. Hence, it can be expected to get huge viewership.

I was bracketed as this poor, malnourished, simple boy next door-Vikrant Massey

Vikrant Massey: ‘Was bracketed as poor, malnourished boy’

From his grey role in Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba to his next Sector 36, Vikrant says he is consciously choosing parts that break his 12th Fail image
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; August 16, 2024)

Playing a grey character in a world devoid of morals is an actor’s delight. That’s one of the reasons why Vikrant Massey relishes being a part of the Haseen Dillruba universe. As co-star Taapsee Pannu and he have returned to the romantic thriller’s world with Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, he believes the timing is just right as Hindi cinema today has moved beyond its all-white protagonists.

“When we humanize the characters that tread into grey zones, we make them relatable. In the last eight to 10 years, there has been a change in the world of storytelling, where unconventional characters have become mainstream because there is resonance with them. Even if you play an out-and-out antagonist and manage to humanize it, you will find a lot of relatability with it,” he says.

From Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba’s world of love and betrayal, Massey moves on to the 2006 Nithari case with the Netflix thriller, Sector 36. If it’s quite a leap, it is deliberate. With each project, the actor wants to surprise the audience and break his boy-next-door image.

“Sometimes, I feel there is an expectation to do a certain kind of films post 12th Fail [2023]. But that perception existed even before the film. I was bracketed as this poor, malnourished, simple boy-next-door. But I have been fortunate with my writers and producers, who recognized the potential beyond [my] physical appearance or perceived image. What you saw of me in the second half of Haseen Dillruba was a breath of fresh air for anyone who stereotyped me as that [boy-next-door]. The reason behind the kind of films I’m doing next year is that [I want to shed] this perceived image. What I am doing next is not expected of me.”

There’s another reason behind choosing diverse roles. Repeating himself on screen is a no-no for Massey. To him, it’s the key to boredom.

“Jimmy sir [Shergill] said in an interview that you can’t keep doing the same thing. There are times when you do something intense and take [the character] back home, and other times, you feel like doing a mindless comedy. It’s important to break the rut. A perception about you is created and you can’t fight it. The only thing then is to do something that is not expected of you.”
