BT Exclusive: Mumbai roads are always jammed, I’d love to take the metro-Nushrratt Bharuccha

Prathamesh Bandekar (BOMBAY TIMES; February 4, 2023)

Mumbai recently saw the launch of two new metro lines — line 2A (Dahisar to DN Nagar, Andheri West) and line 7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East). While Mumbaikars are excited about riding in it, actress Nushrratt Bharuccha did an exclusive shoot with Bombay Times, and during that, she spoke about her love for train rides and how hopping on a metro is a great way to save time in a city like Mumbai that’s known for its traffic jams.

“It must be more than 10 years since I have travelled by public transport. While studying at Jai Hind College, I travelled from Santacruz to Churchgate. I remember I would have to let a few trains go by as getting in would be a struggle because of the crowd,” she said.

Talking about her first ride in the metro, Nushrratt shared, “This seems like a fun ride. The metro is so well-kept, clean and hygienic… travelling in it is an absolute pleasure. Also, this will help reduce crowd on the road as well as local trains, so taking the metro is a big plus. I would travel by trains while staying in Australia with my brother, and back then, I used to wonder why we didn’t have something like that. I am thrilled that our metro is of international standard.”

Going into flashback mode, Nushrratt says that despite the crowded journeys on local trains, she would love her travel time, something she doesn’t get to enjoy anymore. “I can’t really travel by public transport or trains anymore,” she says, adding, “But I have to admit that I have always loved travelling by trains. I feel a sense of sukoon in train travel. I can sit in a train and travel for hours. Those five years when I travelled from Santacruz to Churchgate, my parents would be worried. I would be so much at peace that sometimes I would doze off. My mother would keep calling me as she would be worried that I would miss my stop. Also, whenever I would fight with anyone, I would take a rickshaw to the station, hop into a train and go on a ride till I calmed down. So, train rides were like a stressbuster for me.”

Ask her whether she would consider hopping on the metro if she was running late for work, and she says, “Absolutely! I hate being late. But I feel that people don’t realize that being late isn’t a choice anymore. It’s now a by-product of living in Mumbai, as our roads are always jammed. So, if the solution is to take a metro to reach on time, I would mask up and hop on the metro.”

Seeing Irrfan Khan’s mural in Bandra evoked a bittersweet feeling in me-Nimrat Kaur

The actress says many people haven’t been able to come to terms with Irrfan’s demise
Ismat Tahseen (BOMBAY TIMES; May 15, 2020)

Legendary actor Irrfan Khan’s fans from across the world are yet to come to terms with his sudden death. Recently, Nimrat Kaur, his co-star in The Lunchbox (2013), happened to spot a mural of the actor in the bylanes of Bandra, which took her down memory lane. She even posted the picture of Irrfan’s mural on social media with the caption, “Chanced upon this arresting mural in Ranwar Village on an errand run today. Incidentally only a few houses down the one where Saajan Fernandes’s house was located in The Lunchbox. Such an ominous yet celebratory confluence of life and art... My heart felt compliments to the artist @bollywoodartproject and a million thoughts and loving prayers for this immortal soul. All that came to the mind was, who knew...#IrrfanForever (sic).

When BT contacted her, she said, “I live in Santacruz, but I had to go that side as I buy food for my cats from a store there. As I was driving, I entered a lane, where Ritesh Batra (director) and I had met for coffee, last year. During our conversation, I remember telling him, ‘I don’t know the house where Irrfan’s scenes in the film were shot’. He then walked me out of the cafe and showed me where Irrfan’s portions were shot. And yesterday, just a few houses ahead of that, I came upon this mural at Ranwar Village. It evoked a bittersweet feeling in me. After I clicked the photo, I was unsure if I should post it, as we are under Coronavirus lockdown. I felt that somewhere, many of us have not been able to come to terms with Irrfan’s demise. He was such an iconic figure. I remember his sense of humour and ease in all circumstances. His mere presence was an uplifting experience.

Nimrat Kaur’s plan to move into a new house put on hold

Life has come to a pause for most of us, and everyone is finding a new rhythm in the midst of the ongoing crisis. Talking to BT, actress Nimrat Kaur says, “It took me a couple of days to get a grip on what this Coronavirus lockdown entails and then I figured out a routine. I have two cats, but they are the least of my problems now. I live alone and so, I am doing everything on my own.”

The actress was planning to move into her new apartment in Bandra in April, but the #CoronaScare and the current lockdown has put her plans on hold. Nimrat, who currently lives in Santacruz, says, “I was renovating my new house in Bandra, but my plans have been put on hold and I obviously can’t shift in April.”

She adds, “Being at home all day, I have found a rhythm. I wake up very early and see the sunrise. I do my yoga practice in the morning, followed by all the household chores. I make quickish meals for myself. In the evening, I watch the sunset. My building has a rooftop and residents can access that. So, that’s the only respite.”

Ajay Devgn is all set to step into the sports shoes of Syed Abdul Rahim. The biopic on the former coach of the Indian football team is going on the floors in July with a fourmonth, start-to-finish schedule. According to a source from the film’s team, Ajay’s co-stars are a mix of real players and lookalikes of popular names like Chuni Goswami, PK Banerjee, Jarnail Singh among others.

“They have been training at a Santacruz ground for two hours every morning since March-end with PV Vinoy, former striker and chief coach of Western Railways. Ajay who has been supervising the prep in-between other shoots, will soon begin his own training,” the source informed, adding that the team will move to another city for his prep to avoid leaks pertaining to the details. Look tests have been on for the past few days.

The shoot starts with a week-long schedule in Mumbai after which it will move to Lucknow for 40 days. “After a break, they will return to the city for another 15 days of work before heading to Kolkata. Amit (Sharma, director) is finalising the international locations. Jakarta, Rome and Melbourne are in contention,” the source added.

The Boney Kapoor, Akash Chawla and Arunava Joy Sengupta production spans 15 years and will capture the journey of the Indian football team at their finest, including when they reached the semifinals of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and won a Gold at the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta when Syed was the coach. Nine months later, on June 11 1963, Rahim who was suffering from lung cancer, breathed his last in Hyderabad. Mirror had reported (Mar 13) that South actress Keerthy Suresh plays the female lead in the film.
