Mahadev betting app case: Sahil Khan granted bail

Who Is Actor Sahil Khan And What Is His Role In Mahadev Betting App Case

THE TIMES OF INDIA (July 6, 2024)

Mumbai: A sessions court has granted bail to actor Sahil Khan in the Mahadev betting app case registered by Matunga police. Khan, in his plea, claimed that most of the allegations against him were ‘speculative’ and there was no concrete evidence.

The complaint filed against the actor was politically motivated, said the plea filed through advocate Faiz Merchant. Not a single member or player using the Mahadev Online Book app — which is accused of facilitating online betting on a variety of games and activities — had filed a complaint against any of the accused named in the First Information Report, the application said.

He was arrested from Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh in April this year after the Bombay High Court rejected his pre-arrest bail plea. Khan, known for films like ‘Style’ and ‘Xcuse Me’, now works as a fitness expert.

A special investigation team is conducting a probe into alleged illegal transactions between certain financial and real estate firms and the promoters of the controversial app. The size of the scam was about Rs 15,000 crore, as per the FIR registered by the Matunga police. The Enforcement Directorate is also investigating the money laundering aspect of the case.

Mumbai: Police arrest actor Sahil Khan in betting app scam

Mateen Hafeez (THE TIMES OF INDIA; April 29, 2024)

Mumbai: Actor Sahil Khan was arrested on Sunday in connection with his alleged role in the Rs 15,000 crore Mahadev betting app case. Khan (50) was produced in a city court and has been sent to police custody till May 1. A special investigation team of the crime branch nabbed him from a hotel in Jagdalpur, Chhatissgarh. He was brought to Mumbai.

Khan, who had been working as a fitness expert until recently, had fled the city on Apr 24 and had been dodging the police by constantly changing his location. After his anticipatory bail application was rejected by Bombay high court on Apr 24, the police team had been trying to nab him.

To track down his whereabouts, the police had been tracking his location which showed he was constantly on the move at different points of time — Gadchiroli in Maharasthra, Goa, Karnataka, Telangana, and also Chhattisgarh.

A senior crime branch officer said Khan was a partner in a betting app firm. “He had been promoting the app through social media and had also forged some documents. He was asked to explain about the money trail. He did not cooperate in the probe,” said the officer.

Khan, who was on the top list of suspects involving Mahadev betting app and its promoters Saurabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal, had two weeks ago appeared before the city crime branch office to record his statement.

Police are probing the alleged financial transactions between some real estate companies and promoters of Mahadev betting App. Investigators found several betting apps were created under the Mahadev betting app.

An FIR in the betting case had been registered at Matunga police station in November and the accused had been booked for cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy under sections of Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act.

The SIT had in Jan arrested Dixit Kothari (27), a Mira Road resident, in this case.

The Mumbai police arrested actor and influencer Sahil Khan for his alleged involvement in the Mahadev betting application case. However, Khan stated that he hadn’t even received the payment of Rs. 3 lakh per month for promoting the Mahadev betting application on his Instagram account.

In 2023, the Mumbai Crime Branch sent a summons to actor Sahil Khan and three other actors to appear for questioning in the Mahadev betting application case. However, Khan didn’t show up and continued to post videos on social media. Sahil Khan also posted a picture of himself in a pool with the caption, “Good morning, Jumma Mubarak.”

The Crime Branch, Special Investigation Team (SIT) discovered that the actor had fled to Chhattisgarh. A 40-hour-long operation was conducted and the actor was arrested in Chhattisgarh and taken into custody. So far, the SIT team has arrested 32 people involved in the betting application scam.

Khan filed an application in the high court to obtain anticipatory bail, however, the court rejected his application. He was produced in court and remanded to four days of police custody until May 1.

Speaking to mid-day, Khan’s advocate, Mujahid Ansari, said, “My client is a victim and is not involved in the Mahadev betting application. He received a contract from the agencies only to promote the app on his Instagram page. An agreement was made with the agencies wherein my client would receive a salary of Rs. 3 lakh per month for 24 months. However, my client didn’t receive any amount. He is a victim, and the cops should release him and lift all charges against him.”

“Actors usually get paid for publicizing such products, and this is conducted with a signed agreement. While promoting the app, Khan also agreed with the agency that he would not be responsible for any damages or losses,” advocate Ansari added.

According to the police, Khan has changed his location multiple times in an attempt to evade the cops. He has reportedly been in Goa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gadhchiroli, and Chhattisgarh.

Police discovered that the government has lost approximately Rs 15,000 crore in taxes because they were not paid through the Mahadev betting application.

What is the Mahadev betting app scam?
On January 1, 2019, the Mahadev Betting application was launched on many portals, and millions of people signed up. The accused used many celebrities to promote it on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Google pages. On this application, people across the country placed online bets on sports like cricket, football, tennis, casino games, and teen patti. However, the accused who was running the betting application evaded taxes.

Mumbai: A day after Manoj Patil, the winner of Mr India 2016 title for body-building, allegedly tried to end his life by taking an overdose of sleeping pills, the Oshiwara police on Friday registered a first information report against four people, including actor Sahil Khan, reportedly in a case of abetment to suicide, criminal intimidation, defamation and common intention.

Till Friday, no one was arrested in the case. “The probe is on in the case registered against actor Khan and three others who drove Patil to take the extreme step. No one has been arrested. Action will be initiated only after completion of the probe,” said a police officer of the Oshiwara police station.

Besides Khan, the three others who were booked on Friday night are Raja Faujdar, Junaid Kalivala and Rubal Dandkar.

Patil is currently recuperating in hospital, and his condition is stated to be stable, said a police officer.

Style actor Sahil Khan spreads panic at Goregaon building by wrongly claiming two neighbours have tested positive for COVID-19; apologises after society slams insensitive behaviour
Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; March 23, 2020)

At a time when quelling panic is as important as practising precaution, high drama ensued at Imperial Heights in Goregaon when actor Sahil Khan shared on social media that two of his neighbours have tested positive for COVID-19, without having verified the information.

Khan, best remembered for his outing in Style (2001), is a resident of the posh Goregaon residential complex that is home to several television celebrities. On Saturday evening, in a bizarre move, he posted a video on Instagram in which he stated that two residents of the building — a 72-year-old and an 18-year-old — had been inflicted with the virus.

As soon as word spread, the residents called for an urgent meeting with Khan and gave him an earful for spreading baseless information. The actor then deleted the video, instead posting another that clarified that he had been misinformed.

Actor-astrologer Raman Handa, who resides in the complex, states that Khan created "panic in the complex". "We were taken by utter shock [by his video]. We don't know what prompted him to spread wrong information." The residents took a stand against him and told him that his action would be reported to the local civic officials. "It was only then that he tendered a written apology to the society and the local municipal ward office. Perhaps, he did it to gain mileage." Ghajini actor Pradeep Rawat adds, "He apologised, so we did not pursue the matter."

When mid-day reached out to Khan, he said, "I was worried as my ailing dad was recently discharged from the hospital. I had put up a post about taking precautions." Mention his erroneous post about his neighbours having contracted the virus, and he says, "It was a case of Chinese whispers; it was unverified. As soon as other residents asked me, I apologised and deleted the post."

Cops to summon Kangana Ranaut, Ayesha Shroff for illegally sourcing CDRs from arrested lawyer

Nishikant Karlikar (THE TIMES OF INDIA; March 21, 2018)

The controversy concerning illegal sourcing of call data records (CDR) has put the spotlight on Bollywood biggies with top police officials naming actor Jackie Shroff ’s wife Ayesha and actor Kangana Ranaut for their alleged involvement in the case and their association with arrested lawyer Rizwan Siddiquee.

DCP (crime) Abhishek Trimukhe on Tuesday made the revelation to the media, suggesting that the investigations may pull the mask off several actors and businessmen who have been involved in illegally sourcing of CDRs of rivals.

“During the analysis of Siddique’s mobile phones, it has come to light that Ayesha asked for CDRs of actor Sahil Khan to be sourced. The CDR was later provided by Siddique, possibly for personal reasons. The reason for sourcing of the CDR shall be revealed,” the officer said.

Trimukhe added that they have evidence of Ranaut sharing actor Hrithik Roshan’s number with Siddiquee. “We have written to nodal officers of mobile operators for further details,’’ the DCP said. He said they have summoned Ayesha on Wednesday and others too will be called.

“Siddiquee has told us he got to know arrested private detective Prashant Palekar of Magnum agency six months ago. But we have found that the two were in touch since 2014,” added Trimukhe.

Police also suspect the advocate is into illegal sourcing of CDRs for long and may have deleted some WhatsApp chats.

An analysis of his laptop revealed that he was summoned by the chief judicial magistrate of Warangal in a cheating and conspiracy case, and we found some legal documents, the officer added.

A model on Tuesday too approached Thane crime branch to complain against Siddique. She told newsmen that he was her counsel but in one case he tampered with evidence and helped the opposite party. She alleged that he does this with other clients too. A police officer said her complaint does not seem to be related to the CDR case but her statement will be recorded.

Meanwhile, the Bombay HC on Tuesday directed the state government to furnish records relating to the arrest of Siddiquee, who has been accused of illegally obtaining CDRs of actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s wife. The HC was hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Siddique’s wife Tasneem, who claimed he was arrested in violation of norms.

The petition claimed the advocate was summoned by the Thane crime branch as a witness and was arrested without notice under section 41 A of the Criminal Procedure Code. (Inputs by Shibu Thomas)

Former actress and model illegally sourced call detail record of actor Sahil Khan with whom she had dispute, say Thane cops
Vinay Dalvi (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 21, 2018)

The Thane crime branch investigating into the illegal Call Detail Record (CDR) case has learnt that actor Jackie Shroff’s wife, Ayesha Shroff, a former model and actress, had illegally sourced CDR of actor Sahil Khan with whom she allegedly had a dispute. The police are in the process of summoning Ayesha Shroff to record her statement in the matter.

“The two were involved in a dispute and she allegedly sourced the CDR of the actor, and handed it to her counsel Rizwan Siddiqui,” said Nitin Thakare, Senior Police Inspector, Thane crime branch.

When contacted, Ayesha Shroff said, “I don’t know anything about this.”

Rizwan is presently in the custody of Thane crime branch for allegedly sourcing the CDR of the wife of actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

According to police, Ayesha Shroff and Sahil Khan were locked in a dispute a few years ago. She had claimed that they had formed a company in 2009 to produce films in partnership, and that Khan cheated her of Rs 8 crore. Khan, on his part, had claimed that he was in a relationship with her and had spent most of the money on her, gifting her a car and staying with her. However, she had countered that Khan was gay and it was not possible to have a relationship with him. Later in 2015, both of them had withdrawn cases against each other and the session’s court disposed of cases against them. While Khan had offered an apology on moral grounds for the business losses caused to her, Ayesha, in return, withdrew all the cases that she had filed against him. They agreed that the companies that they had together would be shut and both parties would not level allegations against each other through the media.

They also agreed to conditions like they would not interfere in each other’s life and would not harm each other’s reputation.

Meanwhile, the Thane crime branch has also claimed that actress Kangana Ranaut had messaged the mobile number of actor Hrithik Roshan to her lawyer Rizwan Siddiqui. The police said as Kangana and Hrithik had a dispute, they are trying to find out if the lawyer had also illegally sourced the CDR of Hrithik.

Sahil Khan absconding after Ayesha Shroff's fresh police complaint against him

Bandra police is said to be hot on the heels of former actor Sahil Khan who allegedly sent threat messages to producer Ayesha Shroff over a financial dispute. He is said to be absconding after the latter filed a fresh complaint against him.

The duo, in 2009, had launched a film production house and a cyber security firm in partnership but later parted ways. Ayesha had registered a police complaint against him for allegedly swindling Rs 5 crore. Sahil then applied for an anticipatory bail, claiming that he was being made to pay for everything that he had accepted as gifts from Ayesha — expensive holidays to swanky cars.

On Monday, Ayesha responded to the “affair” claims by filing another FIR under Sections 506 and 509 of the IPC but when the cops proceeded to arrest Sahil, he had reportedly vanished. A source says: “When the cops went to arrest Sahil, his sister said he was in Pune and will present himself at the police station on Tuesday morning but he didn’t.”

Ramchandra Dhavale, senior inspector at the Bandra police station, confirms the news, saying, “We had gone to arrest Sahil Khan but he is absconding.” Sahil and his lawyer told us that he has been granted bail by Bandra court but when we asked him for a copy of it, he refused to share it with us. Bandra police, however, maintain that he has not secured bail.

“He hasn’t surrendered before us. We are now trying to trace him,” says a senior cop.

After money swindling slur, Ayesha Shroff points threat call finger at ex-business partner Sahil Khan?

Asira Tarannum (MID-DAY; November 18, 2014)

Jackie Shroff’s producer-wife, Ayesha has registered an FIR with Bandra police following a slew of alleged threat calls from various numbers. She is presently involved in a financial dispute with her business partner and former actor, Sahil Khan, allegedly accusing him of swindling money to the tune of Rs 8 crore.

A source close to Ayesha says, “She has been receiving threat messages that her entire family will be dragged into the matter if she doesn’t agree to an out- of- court settlement. We believe Sahil is behind all this.”

The duo had launched a cyber security firm and a production house in 2009. They had locked the script for a period film titled Rani which was shelved and the production house eventually shut down. Ayesha and Sahil are now engaged in a mud-slinging contest over the alleged siphoned funds. The latter has applied for an anticipatory bail after receiving a legal notice.

Her lawyer, Rizwan Siddiquee says, “An interim bail has been granted to Sahil Khan and his sister in this case of cheating and criminal breach of trust. But Sahil Khan is openly defaming my client but also intentionally insulting her modesty. My client was also shocked to receive threat messages from an unknown number yesterday, asking her to settle the said matter. However, she is determined to fight for whatever is right and to protect her dignity. Accordingly, a fresh FIR has been registered at Bandra.”

Responding to the news of the FIR against him, Sahil says, “Ayesha has filed a false FIR of cheating against me. Since she is aware that the court has given me protection, she has filed another false complaint that I threatening her. When I have disclosed everything to the court authorities, I don’t need to settle anything with her. It’s part of her game plan to oppose my anticipatory bail.”

Ayesha Shroff was in a relationship with me-Sahil Khan

Ayesha was in a relationship with me: Sahil
Ayesha says Sahil was just a business partner; files fresh complaint with Bandra police accusing him of defaming her
Nazia Sayed (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 16, 2014)

The financial dispute between actor Jackie Shroff's film producer wife Ayesha and her one-time 'good friend' and business partner actor Sahil Khan has turned murkier with Sahil claiming that the two were in a relationship for a long time and that all the money she now wants back was spent by her on expensive holidays they took together, renting apartments where they could meet, and gifting luxury cars to him.

Sahil has made these claims in an anticipatory bail application filed before the sessions court after being accused by Ayesha of cheating her of Rs 8 crore. While Ayesha has alleged that Sahil swindled all the money out of a production house and a cyber security firm they had jointly set up, his bail application accuses her of setting up Karma Productions with the sole intent of using her family's wealth to fund her life of excessive luxury under the garb of running a business.

Ayesha's lawyer on Saturday rubbished all of Sahil's claims and said that his client has filed a fresh complaint with the Bandra police seeking Sahil arrest for outraging her modest, defaming her and for criminal intimidation. "My client was in touch with Sahil Khan solely for business purposes and nothing else. Now as Sahil fears arrest, he is cooking up stories," advocate Rizwan Siddiquee said.

Detailing how they graduated from exchanging notes on facebook to being friends and then to aserious relationship, Sahil's bail application says that just a few months after she was introduced to him by his sister Shahista Khan, Ayesha began virtually living them in their Versova apartment. He claims that during this time all their friends in the industry knew them as a couple.

The application says that Ayesha was in a frail state of mind during this period as she felt trapped in a loveless marriage with Jackie. She also would often show suicidal tendencies. As Sahil felt compelled to take care of her and they spent a lot of time together trying out new restaurants and watching movies, they fell in love.

Sahil claims that it was Ayesha who forced him to move from his Versova flat to a plush Rs 2.5 lakh-a-month Oberoi Sky Heights flat in Lokhandwala. Sahil's bail application says while the apartment's owner was not willing to rent the property to him because of the actor's dietary preferences, the deal went through only after Ayesha intervened and said that she would be staying with him.

Sahil says that Ayesha also wanted to make a sequel to Rama, a movie which had him in the lead, and had given him a BMW car as the signing amount. The car, the bail application says, was later sold to pay a debtor.

Sahil claims that Ayesha virtually controlled his life and even forced him to quit his Rs 60,000-a-month IT job so that he could spend time with her. He alleges that Ayesha used him in a phase of her life when she needed emotional support and dumped him after her son Tiger made a successful debut in a film and her family life improved.

Senior Inspector of the Bandra police station Ramchandra Dhavle said Sahil Khan has been served three summons for recording his statement but he has not turned up even once.

Jackie Shroff’s wife Ayesha says biz partner Sahil Khan duped her of Rs 8 crore?

Jackie’s wife says biz partner duped her of Rs 8 crore
Karma Cyber Intel Private Limited launched in partnership with actor Sahil Khan folded up in just 13 months.
Vickey Lalwani & Nazia Sayed (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 2, 2014)

Ayesha Shroff, film producer wife of actor Jackie Shroff, has sent her business partner and small-time actor Sahil Khan a legal notice, demanding back Rs 8 crore she claims she invested in a business with him. Ayesha has claimed that the two along with a partner launched Karma Cyber Intel Private Limited in 2009. Focused on cyber security, the firm was run out of a rented office near Fun Republic in Andheri.

While Ayesha pumped in Rs 8 crore over three years into the business, it never really took off.

Billed as India's first comprehensive cyber protection provider for data protection and preservation, the business was shut down 13 months after it was launched in 2009. Ayesha claims she spent her own money to settle the dues of its 25 employees.

The notice says Sahil refused to provide records of how the money was spent and any returns on the investment. Ayesha has also alleged that when she started pressing for answers, Sahil stopped taking her calls.

Karma Cyber was not Ayesha and Sahil's first joint venture. Known in the industry as close friends, they had launched a film production house in 2009 and locked the script for a period film titled 'Rani'. Written by Ayesha along with American writer Paul Cuscheri, the production house had signed A R Rehman for the film. Talks were also initiated with Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu for the lead role.

The film project, however, had to be shelved and the production house was eventually shut down. While there is no information available from either side on what went wrong, Ayesha has alleged that this is when Sahil proposed that they launch a cyber security firm and asked Ayesha to fund it.

When Mumbai Mirror approached Sahil on Saturday, he refused to comment on the cyber security business, the money invested in it, or the failed film production venture. He, however, claimed that there are no problems between him and Ayesha and that they continue to be friends. Refusing to comment on the legal notice she has slapped on him, he said some industry rivals are spreading rumours to sully his reputation.

When contacted, Ayesha refused too refused to comment. "I do not wish to talk about it," she said.

Ayesha and Sahil's business partner in the cyber security business, Kalpesh Nimbark, could not be contacted.

Ayesha and her husband own a media company, Jackie Shroff Entertainment Limited. They have two children, the elder of whom, Tiger, was announced as an actor in Sajid Nadiadwala's 2014 film Heropanti.

Itne bure din aa gaye that we will molest a 50-year-old woman?-Sana Khaan

‘I am a soft target’
Sana Khaan, whose arrest this week made headlines, comes clean on the controversies.
Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 31, 2014)

You are in news again for alleged assault and criminal intimidation of media consultant Poonam Khanna...
Kya hamare itne bure din aa gaye that we will molest a 50-year-old woman? I had gone to the hospital, along with Ismail (boyfriend Ismail Khan) and my servant to visit Poonam who was undergoing treatment there. The woman conned me of Rs 11 lakh, paid to her for a property which was supposed to fetch me double the amount from a builder, who wanted to redevelop a slum. Subsequently, I invested another Rs 3 lakh through her, as a token amount for a Rs 2 crore flat. I met Poonam through my tailor and then she started coming home frequently. I trusted her but then she tried to steal my credit card. With time, I realised that she had no intention of giving me my money back.

Buzz in the court on Wednesday, was that you have connections with the underworld.
If that was true, would I be at police stations and courts?

In 2013 you were accused of attempting to kidnap a 15-year-old girl who had spurned a marriage proposal from your cousin Naved...
Yeah, but even then I was innocent. I don't interfere in other people's love lives. I am not a matchmaker running a marriage bureau. I met that girl at Sion and she told me that her mom wanted to meet me which is why I visited her home in Navi Mumbai. The next thing I knew they had filed a police complaint against me.

Why do controversies follow you?
I am a soft target and that is why I've got embroiled in these controversies. At this rate, by next year I will be branded a terrorist. Can I please remain just an actress?

Could it be because of your association with Ismail Khan?
No, Ismail's intentions are honourable. Last year they got me married to some Asif Khan, this year it's Ismail Khan, next year I will be linked to someone else...

But he allegedly attacked actor Sahil Khan in the gym on October 22 for spreading rumours about the two of you...
(Raises her voice) That man has a problem with Ismail. If he was really slapped, doesn't he have two hands too? Couldn't he have hit back? He is under the delusion that the whole world is obsessed with him. If I had to think of anybody, would it not be Salman or Shah Rukh Khan?

Are you in touch with Salman Khan who cast you in his home production Jai Ho?
No, but we chat when we meet.

You have not signed another film after Jai Ho. Why don't you pick up the phone and ask Salman to cast you in one of his upcoming films? He is known to be magnanimous...
He knows that I am an actress and if he has a role which he thinks suits me, I am sure he will call me himself.

Have the controversies affected your work?
Of course. Today instead of acting, I am busy trying to sort out legal issues.

Sana Khan’s boyfriend Ismail Khan thrashes actors Khan at an Andheri gym?

Sana Khan’s boyfriend thrashes actor Sahil Khan at an Andheri gym
Vickey Lalwani & Nazia Sayed (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 28, 2014)

Actress Sana Khaan is mired in a fresh controversy as her alleged beau, Ismail Khan, is on the run after assaulting actor-director Sahil Khan at the 48 Fitness Gym in Andheri West. The three were about to enter into a protein supplement business, but Sahil's delay in signing the contract, allegedly angered Ismail fueling the row.

The altercation occurred on Diwali when Sahil Khan, of Xcuse me and Style fame, was unexpectedly attacked while he was talking to cricketer Sreesanth at the gym. "I waved at Sahil when he entered. I have known him and Sana for long and was, in fact, about to enter into a business deal with them. Later in the gym, when I was chatting with Sreesanth, Ismail unexpectedly hit me from behind. I was initially taken aback, but soon I started defending myself," said Sahil. The two were finally pulled apart by the gym staff and bouncers, who were forced to intervene.

Sahil, who has registered a non-cognizable complaint with the Amboli police station on the same day, also claims that he was threatened for his life by Ismail. "He said that he has a gun and he will kill me. He threatened to throw acid on my face saying that he already has 20 police cases against him and that another one won't make a difference," said Sahil. "He thinks that I am spreading rumours about Sana and him. But it's all wrong."

Police investigations however revealed that Sahil was supposed to launch a protein supplement 'BB Boss' with Sana and Ismail. While Ismail had sent the contract to Sahil few days before Diwali, Sahil delayed signing the contract as he disapproved of certain clauses. The cops suspect that Sahil postponing the deal could have angered Ismail, since the project had already seen many delays.

Senior Inspector Ramesh Kadhtare of Amboli police station confirming the story said, "We have received the complaint and enquiry in going on. Action will be taken accordingly."
