Rupali Ganguly, who is currently riding high on the success of her ongoing TV show Anupamaa, was in Gujarat recently for a quick trip.
She tells us, “I visited Mehsana for an event and it felt special because during the first episode of our show, we had Anupamaa (her character) going to the Modhera Sun Temple. I also wanted to visit Ambaji Temple for a long time and I am glad that I could do that on this visit.”
She adds, “I love coming to Gujarat and I have grown up with Gujarati neighbours. I have an insane obsession with Gujarati food, and I love dal dhokli, Gujarati dal, undhiyu, lapsi and churma ladoo. In fact, there are days when I crave Gujarati food in Mumbai and travel to Borivali to have Gujarati thali. I have also picked up the language quite well and playing a Gujarati character in Anupamaa has been a wonderful experience.”
‘I took a seven-year sabbatical because I wanted to be a hands-on mother’
Rupali, who took a seven-year break from showbiz before making a comeback with her current show, says that it was “much needed”. She shares, “I wanted to be a hands-on mother to Rudransh (her son) and it was a very conscious decision to give priority to enjoying my son’s childhood. When Anupamaa was offered, I accepted it because the role was fantastic. It was the first show to have a female protagonist in her 40s and I am delighted that it resonated with the audience. A mother’s emotion is universal, and the makers deserve credit for creating an iconic show. The fact that there have been people who have copied it is a compliment.”
‘I have my guilt trips for not spending enough time with my son’
Rupali, who says that her husband Ashwin K Verma “took a back seat” so that she could pursue her dreams, says that she often has “guilt trips for not spending enough time with my son.” She shares, “Including travel, I have 14-hour days every day and like any mother who steps out of the house for work, I sometimes feel guilty. But my only solace is that Rudransh has one parent to look after him and I feel proud when I say that my son is more attached to his father. We speak over video calls throughout the day and my production house has been very supportive.”
She adds, “We have set roles for everybody-the man has to be the breadwinner, while the woman is supposed to be the homemaker and take care of the kids. In our case, there has been a role reversal. My husband wanted me to achieve my dream and get my due as an actor. I am proud and blessed to have a supportive husband like him. He is my agony aunt, cushion, and my biggest critic. He pans me completely if I perform badly. When I had apprehensions about doing Sarabhai vs Sarabhai because I felt that I would make a fool of myself, he said I must try to do something different.”
On her husband’s role in her professional journey
I met my husband in 2000, the year when I made my TV debut. We were just friends then and while everybody looked down upon TV, he said that the medium has a great future. After I played a negative role in Sanjivani, he said I should wait for something different. When I was offered Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, I was scared about sharing screen space with Ratna Pathak Shah and Satish Shah. But he convinced me to take it up.
On why she feels Sarabhai vs Sarabhai should have a special one-off episode
The Sarabhai vs Sarabhai cast is like family. We have a Sarabhai group, and everybody knows what’s going on in each other’s life. Like all viewers, I would also love to have another season. When we did season 2 in 2017 (Sarabhai vs Sarabhai: Take 2), Monisha (her character) Sahil (played by Sumeet Raghavan) ko chhod ke chali gayi thi. So, I feel there has to be a closure. Just like FRIENDS, we can have a special one-off episode; itna toh banta hai!
Rupali Ganguly felt like a ‘failed mother’ when she couldn’t lactate

HINDUSTAN TIMES (April 3, 2023)
Actor Rupali Ganguly said that she did not lactate when she had her son Rudransh Verma and the social pressure of breastfeeding her child made her feel like a ‘failed mother’. Ganguly welcomed her son in 2015, two years after she got married to businessman Ashwin K Verma in 2013.
The Anupama actor has often talked about the “miracle” that her son is, because of the difficulties she faced before conceiving him. She had thyroid issues that made it difficult for her to conceive.
Recalling the time she gave birth to her son, Ganguly told a news portal, “Once the child is born, we women put too much pressure on ourselves that only breast milk should be given, again the conditioning that you have got as a child, you follow that. People come to give you advice. I did not lactate and it is fine. I want to tell all the mothers. I totally killed and judged myself. I felt like a failed mother over it that I can’t even feed my baby. I psyched myself completely.”
The actor, popular as Monisha from the TV show Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, added that she gained weight to help with her with lactation and weighed 83kg. “After a point, even my ankles couldn’t bear my weight. When I would take my son for a stroll in a pram, people would say ‘Arre tu toh Monisha hai na, kitni moti hogayi’. Maybe someone must have said that in a very nice way, but you feel bad.”
Ganguly further said that such comments do hurt, adding that once an actor friend of hers told her she had turned into an “aunty”.

Unfortunately, I can’t be there for my son. I feel like a failure-Rupali Ganguly

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 20, 2022)
Actor Rupali Ganguly claims she had no plans to return to work after becoming a mum. “When my son was born in 2015, I didn’t want anything else,” she shares, adding, “I just wanted to focus on him and enjoy every millisecond of motherhood. Because I became a mother late in life, those moments were especially precious to me.”
However, she did return to the screen and her current show Anupamaa is quite popular. The 44-year-old admits that she only agreed to it because it was time for her son to start school and she assumed he would be in school. But things turned out differently due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
“I thought it was the right time to begin working, not realising that Covid ka lockdown ho jaayega [and schools will be shut]. When a show was offered to me, my husband (Ashwin K Verma, businessman) said it was high time I got my due as an actor. He has been managing everything since, single-handedly. Unfortunately, I can’t be there [for my son]. I feel like a failure.”
Ganguly says she is at the shoot all day, away from her son, considering she is the show’s lead. “I am there all the time. There is a standing joke, ki set ka gate main kholti hoon aur main hi band karti hoon. You kind of sacrifice your family time, health, sleep, and a lot of other things to follow a dream... It does get extremely difficult at times,” she ends.

Akash Wadhwa (BOMBAY TIMES; April 5, 2021)
Rupali Ganguly had planned to spend quality time with her husband and son on her birthday today. However, the Anupamaa actress has to be away from them as she has tested positive for Coronavirus. She is presently self-quarantining away from her family. We spoke to her about her health, the impact on her TV show now and her son Rudransh, who she misses the most. Excerpts from a chat:
‘I WANTED TO SPEND MY BIRTHDAY WITH MY FAMILY’
Rupali had asked for leave in advance so that she could celebrate her birthday with her family. She says, “I wanted to spend some quality time with my family, especially with my son and my husband. I had planned so much for my birthday. But I think when I was busy making plans; God must have been laughing at me, knowing what was in store for me.” The actress now plans to celebrate a quiet birthday in the company of her dogs.
Rupali, who has quarantined herself in another house after testing positive, says, “I have a household help with me who had tested positive sometime back. She is in a PPE kit throughout the day, though. I also have many books with me to read.”
Rupali wishes to see her son on her birthday. “On my birthday today, I wish to see my son, mom and husband from a distance. I miss them a lot,” says an emotional Rupali. Eagerly waiting to test negative, she adds, “The first thing that I want to do once I test negative is hug and kiss my son. I was petrified for my family’s safety. Thankfully, their reports have come negative.”
‘I AM NOT WATCHING ANY WEB SERIES, NOT EVEN ANUPAMAA’
Ask her how she is spending time, and pat comes her reply, “Not by watching web series for sure! People have suggested so many movies and web series, but I haven’t switched on the TV yet, not even to watch Anupamaa. Also, health-wise the symptoms are showing slowly, like now I am losing my sense of smell and taste.”
Rupali says she wants to make the most of this phase by spending time with herself. “I want to start an inward journey. This phase is teaching me that I need to love myself and that I am important for myself, too.”
‘I FEEL BAD ABOUT TESTING POSITIVE, BUT THE SCRIPTWRITERS OF ANUPAMAA ARE ADEPT AT CHANGING THE TRACK’
Like many shows, makers of Anupamaa, too, are likely to explore an alternate track in Rupali’s absence. The actress shares, “On the day I went for my COVID test, they had started working on an alternative track. I feel bad that I have tested positive. I know other actors have tested positive too, but the show is called Anupamaa, and it won’t be easy to manage things, but our scriptwriters are fantastic. A lot has happened on our show in the past few weeks, but we have managed to retain the top position because of the writers. They are adept at making the transition in tracks smoothly.”
Rupali Ganguly hurt after abusive bikers break her car’s glass

V Narayan (THE TIMES OF INDIA; August 5, 2018)
Mumbai: In a case of road rage, television actor Rupali Ganguly suffered injuries to her left arm and her five-year-old son and 20-year-old caretaker were left petrified after a biker and the pillion rider abused her and broke the glass of her car’s window and even gave the vehicle a chase on Friday morning.
The incident took place around 8.30am at Bharat Nagar signal junction in Andheri (West) when Ganguly was driving from her Andheri residence to her son’s school and her car reportedly scraped against the bike. None of the onlookers came forward to help despite her pleas. An injured Ganguly first went to drop her son to school but the authorities asked her to take him home as he looked traumatized.
On her way back, Ganguly and her caretaker went to Versova police station to lodge a complaint. Within three hours, biker Mahesh Mokal (30) and pillion rider Akash Dhatkar (22) were traced to their offices in Dahanu and Parel, respectively. They were arrested later in the evening. Ganguly praised police effort.
Deputy commissioner of police (Zone IX) Paramjit Singh Dahiya supervised a team of senior police inspector Ravindra Badguzar, sub-inspector Om Totavar and others who got hold of CCTV footage from the stretch between Bharat Nagar junction and Andheri railway station and identified the duo.
A witness told the police that the duo abused the actor in Marathi. This information helped police track down their residential location in Versova Gaon. “After the two were identified by the victim in the CCTV footage, we went to Versova Gaon. People there identified the two, which helped us to arrest them,” said an officer.
Ganguly told TOI: “Is this the way to threat a woman and a child in a car? The incident occurred after my car rolled ahead and touched the bike, though I had applied the brakes at the signal. The pillion rider first looked back and then the biker hurled abuses. I raised my hands to say sorry. But the pillion rider banged my car. I got worried when the biker punched the glass on the passenger side and broke it in one go and hurled abuses despite my repeated apology. I went blank on seeing blood around my arms after a glass shard hit me. Seeing this, my kid and the caretaker began to cry. The biker did not stop there and also tried to break the glass where my kid and caretaker were seated. I immediately reversed and accelerated. I noticed that the biker chased and even banged my car from behind before I managed to escape.”
Mokal and Dhatkar, who work in courier companies, were produced before Andheri court on Saturday and sent to police custody. “The new police commissioner has given instructions to all to keep a check on street crime,” said Versova senior inspector Badguzar. The two have been released on bail.
TIMES VIEW
That the actor filed a complaint and that prompt action was taken by the cops in this case is welcome. However, what is worrying is that incidents of unruly bikers using intimidation, threats and assault appear to be on the increase. Not only must the law get them before they cause serious harm but passersby must step in and demonstrate citizens' collective power against this menace too.
