I can watch the Football World Cup after 4 years but Roger Federer may not continue playing till then-Saiyami Kher

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; July 17, 2018)

Saiyami Kher has been an ardent sports enthusiast and a diehard Roger Federer fan, and she prefers to catch sporting events during her vacations. The actress never misses an opportunity to watch her favourite tennis legend play live. No wonder then, that she chose Wimbledon over the just concluded FIFA World Cup. An ecstatic Saiyami shared from London, “It was a toss-up between Wimbledon and the football World Cup. I sacrificed football for Federer as I can watch the WC after four years but Federer may not continue playing till then, given the fact that he could possibly retire in the near future. I watched him play so no regrets. Of course, I was gutted to see him bow out in the quarter-final but (cricketer) Ajinkya Rahane and I thoroughly enjoyed watching him play at the Wimbledon and I will be here next year to watch him win. Rohan Bopanna, Javed (Akhtar) uncle and I watched the spectacular Rafael Nadal-Novak Djokovic semi-final, which was one of the best tennis games ever.”

To ensure, she doesn’t miss out on the football final, which partially overlapped with tennis, the actress watched it at the Wimbledon lounge! “As soon as the men’s Wimbledon final got over, we ran towards the lounge to see Croatia play against France”, she added. If football and tennis wasn’t enough, Saiyami also watched India-England’s 2nd cricket ODI (One Day International) at Lord’s. She concluded, “My holidays are always sports oriented. I will also participate in a half marathon in Berlin soon.”

I told Roger Federer that I lived my dream by watching him win the Wimbledon-Saiyami Kher

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; July 18, 2017)

While the world watched in awe as Roger Federer clinched his 19th Grand Slam title and 8th Wimbledon trophy on Sunday, actress Saiyami Kher was one of the very few lucky fans, who got to witness the action live on the Centre Court. Saiyami was fortunate enough to not only watch the Swiss champion play and win the cup, but also meet him post his victory.

Unable to hide her excitement over a phone call from London, the Mirzya actress spilled the beans on her maiden Wimbledon experience and her interaction with legends like Roger Federer, Stefan Edberg and former South African cricketer Shaun Pollock.

A sports player and enthusiast, she said, “I've always been jealous of Javed uncle (Akhtar) for going to the Wimbledon almost every year. Even Farhan (Akhtar) has been going there for a few years now. I've been planning this trip for the past five years and finally, I got to live my dream. I watched Roger Federer play the Quarter-final and win the final and meet him post that. It was absolutely surreal. I've been a Federer fan all my life and I must have spent all my money on buying his merchandise (laughs). Though I saw him in New York three years ago and have spoken to him before, not many get to watch him win the Wimbledon. Who would have thought two years ago that he'd achieve this feat at 35!“

Recalling her meet with the legendary tennis player, she added, “Federer is so humble. Other than his incredible sporting achievements, his humility is what stands out the most for me. You get tongue-tied when you meet someone like him. During my brief meet, I told him that I was living my dream of watching him win the Wimbledon.“

Meeting Roger Federer is a privilege only a few are blessed with, so we wondered how it all happened. “When you want something badly, it just happens. The cards fall into place. Rohan Bopanna is a friend and when I went to the player's lounge to say bye to him, I saw Federer there. I had seen him prior to the match as well, but didn't want to disturb him. After his win, I was thrilled to meet him and click the picture,“ Saiyami revealed.

The young actress, who also happens to be a cricket player, was also happy to meet South African cricketer Shaun Pollock. “It was lovely to discuss India and cricket with Pollock and I also met the legendary Stefan Edberg. His fitness level at 51 puts you to shame. He is so fit,“ she gushed.

Speaking of Wimbledon and its famous dress code, the actress explained, “The strict dress code is only for the Royal Box. I was happy to soak in the experience in my casuals.“

The Men's final saw a host of high-profile movie stars thronging the Centre Court like British actor Henry Cavill aka Superman, Hugh Grant, Bradley Cooper, Hilary Swank and Eddie Redmayne to name a few.

Every woman fell in love with Huge Jackson on set-Dev Patel

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; March 2, 2015)

In India, briefly for a Hollywood film shoot with Nicole Kidman, British actor of Indian descent, Dev Patel, best known for his work in Slumdog Millionaire sportingly answered our questions in his thick English accent.

Seven years have passed since Slumdog Millionaire. You were only 17 then. A lot must have changed?
I think I am just growing up. The more jobs you do, the more experience you get. You come in contact with more and more great actors and directors. The work I am doing... from The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel to this American TV show Newsroom, Chappie all are incredibly different. It makes you more confident and refined on camera as well.

How was it working with Hugh Jackman in Chappie?
Incredible, he is so charismatic. He's a star in every way. Every woman fell in love with him on set. He's spontaneous, full of energy and has a brilliant sense of humour. We have a good chemistry in the film. It was a dream working with him. He got out the teenage boy in me.

You play a robotics expert in that film. Are you a nerd in real life as well?
I am pretty bad when it comes to technology. I refuse to have an iPhone, I have an old touch screen phone. It's a conscious choice because I like keeping things simple. Everyone is constantly on phone these days. It's really a shame because you get disconnected from actually being face to face with humans. Even with my friends, I hate texting. I love talking. That's the kind of person I am. I am not on social media, instant chat messenger either.

You are in India for a shoot. What is that one quality you like the most about the country?
Absolute optimism is what I adore. The nation is developing so fast. Triumph and determination of people here is so intimidating. I love it here, I never felt more alive.

As a British actor, how difficult is it to speak in Indian accent?
India is so diverse, lot of people have qualms with my accent in Marigold. My argument is, it's not based on a person but is a comedic creation. I play India's acclaimed mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan next and that requires a different accent as it's a different persona altogether. You try and discover.

Speaking of Bollywood, you are not too comfortable with dancing?
I absolutely hate dancing. I am very conscious about my gangly limbs, think it's a great obstacle.

Your physical transformation - from being a lanky teenager to a bearded, rugged guy has been much appreciated by women.
I don't know. I stay away from reading stuff about myself. Confidence is a very fragile thing. I am just being me. It's a funny thing when people react differently, when you transform yourself from role to role. I guess I am maturing.

You spoke very fondly of (ex girlfriend) Freida Pinto recently
Sorry, no personal questions.

Are you single?
Ha ha, am I single? I can't answer that right now.

The cricket World Cup is on. Are you following it?
I follow tennis and Roger Federer. Apart from that, I can't sit down and watch a lot of sports. I am more of a part taker than a witness.
