Major production houses are exploring micro-drama format as a test bed for IP and branded content opportunities
Rajesh N Naidu (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; May 11, 2026)
Mumbai: India's fast-growing micro-drama industry is beginning to evolve beyond a volume-driven content play, with established film production houses entering the segment as platforms increasingly use short-form storytelling to test intellectual property (IP) and build branded content opportunities, industry executives and entertainment experts told ET.
Recent reports suggest that major production houses such as Yash Raj Films, which plans to invest Rs. 150 crore in micro-drama content, and Red Chillies Entertainment are diversifying into the space. At least 15 apps currently offer micro-drama content in India.
"Like in the West, India's micro-drama space is likely to emerge as a breeding ground for testing the scalability of an IP. Big players such as Yash Raj Films and Red Chillies Entertainment are likely to test the efficacy of their ideas with audiences on micro-drama apps. Based on audience response, they can then decide whether to scale an IP into a web series or a theatrical feature film," said Azim Lalani, co-founder and chief business officer at Bullet, a micro-drama content app.
Artificial intelligence is emerging as one of the tools for testing IPs in the micro-drama space.
In the West, Holywater, a technology entertainment company, operates a four-app micro-drama ecosystem comprising My Drama, FreeBits, My Muse and My Passion.
According to industry executives, the company first tests an IP on My Muse, its AI-based platform. If the content receives a favourable response, it is adapted into a live-action format and released on another subscription-based app. Content that performs well is then scaled into a larger-format web series or feature film, helping the company de-risk investments.
Industry experts expect a similar model to emerge in India.
Executives said the entry of large production houses into the segment could also open new doors for talent.
"When big players such as Yash Raj Films or Red Chillies Entertainment enter the micro-drama space, they increase its attractiveness. Mainstream talent, which has so far been somewhat reluctant to work in the segment, will begin to take it more seriously," said Kunj Sanghvi, SVP, Business, Kuku TV, a leading micro-drama platform in India.
Branded content is another factor making the segment increasingly attractive, film marketing experts said.
"Big players will premiumise offerings in the micro-drama space. At present, mostly local brands are integrated into content because viewers are largely based in tier-2 and tier-3 markets. But with the entry of players such as Yash Raj Films or Red Chillies Entertainment, brands with a national presence will begin to consider the space more seriously," said Neeraj Joshi, film marketing consultant.
Branded entertainment experts also believe the economics of micro-drama content work in favour of production houses.
"The micro-drama space has relatively low entry barriers. It requires less time and capital compared with theatrical feature films. For large production houses, creating micro-drama content with integrated brands can become a meaningful source of revenue. Today, there is significant unpredictability around box-office performance, while the time and investment needed to produce a feature film are substantially higher," said Navin Shah, joint managing director at EMC Solutions Worldwide, a branded entertainment company.
I will never make Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2-Karan Johar

Sonal Kalra (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 21, 2026)
Iconic — the adjective doesn’t just describe the body of work, but the man behind it as well. Filmmaker-host-actor Karan Johar, in a candid chat on The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra, talks about everything under the sun — his upcoming films and the underworld threat looming large over the film industry to the rumours around a possible comeback of a much-loved film. Excerpts
The biggest speculation right now is whether Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2 is on the cards. There’s also buzz around whether it has something to do with the Takht script being revised. Any comments?
There is no Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2 (K3G2), and there is no derivative of Takht being made. I’d never make a K3G2. I’m not saying K3G was the best film ever made, not at all. Every film has its flaws, but what K3G has in abundance is nostalgia. Generations have grown up watching that film — for what they’ve loved, what they haven’t, what they’ve cried about and laughed with. They love the movie, and I’m very grateful to the universe that I got to create a film that still lives on. I would never mess with that nostalgia or the love the film has, because you’re setting yourself up for disaster when you make a film like K3G2. So yes, the absolute truth is there is no K3G2.
About Takht...
There isn’t a revival of Takht right now on the cards. But that is a film I will definitely make while I can still breathe and stand on my feet.
I consider it to be the strongest screenplay that was developed, written by Sumit Roy. Full credit to him — he’s the writer of the film — and I believe it’s the best-written piece of work in my career. What I have been developing is something nobody’s actually talking about. Thank God for that. So in the garb of this rumour, in the garb of this K3G speculation, actually jo ho raha hai, jo main likh raha hoon, jo main banane wala hoon, uske baare mein koi baat nahi kar raha.
You have just returned from a vacation with your kids, Yash and Roohi. Who’s closer to how you were as a child?
Roohi. She’s a quieter, empathetic, hypersensitive child. She also follows parental instructions, which is what I did. I was a good kid. Yash is a little more of a brat, but he’s also very sensitive. They are good kids.
We’re hearing about you and Sidharth Malhotra coming together for a film. Is there something you want to share?
Sid has been a student (launched by me in Student Of The Year; 2012), and he’s also been very close to the film company. We consider him and Kiara (Advani) family to us. Sid and I have been chatting about the possibility of coming together for a strong film, but right now it’s all too soon.
What is it with you and these blind items that seem to take a liking to you?
I have no idea! Maybe I don’t have an interesting life, so this is what makes my life interesting. I always say: love me, hate me, just don’t be indifferent to me. And I’m glad that Reddit, blind items or speculation keep the interest in what I’m doing alive. That means I may have done something right in my life to have created this sense of curiosity around me. Many of those blind items, when I read them, I find hilarious. Some of them are quite close to the truth, and some are distant from reality... Many a time, I’m amused, but I no longer get upset or angry at either the trolling or the speculation.
It’s good to hear you say that, because like everyone else, you’ve also had moments where it’s affected you. Today, many in the fraternity face intense negativity. If you had to give one piece of advice to stay unaffected, what would it be?
Many celebrity friends have asked me, ‘Why are you so calm even in a crisis?’ Even when there was a lot of Bollywood bashing happening at one point, a very close friend, who is also a movie star, came over and said, ‘Is everything okay? Why are you so calm? You should be reacting’. My parents raised me to know that if something is completely untrue, and people don’t know the person you are, then what is the point of getting upset? I would be upset if what they were saying about me was actually true.
Recently, you said talent management is becoming a difficult profession to sustain. Having spent three decades in the industry and launched many careers, do you feel there is less gratitude among the younger generation today?
The younger generation, with social media, technology and constant noise around them, is very restless and anxious. So I think we’re dealing with an anxiety-ridden generation that wants validation of stardom very fast. I don’t blame them because they are judged daily. None of us, when we started off, were recipients of this level of judgment. The kind of scrutiny that exists today is traumatizing. It can take a toll on your mental health. So I don’t judge them for decisions they make in their life and career that I may or may not agree with. I get it. I hear them. I see what they’re going through.
If you ask me whether I want my children to enter this profession, I can’t give you a resounding yes, because I know how tough it is, even for insiders.
There’s also an anti-incumbency factor when it comes to staying with one agency for long…
It’s the way of the world, and you have to accept it. As a filmmaker, I don’t work with just one actor all the time. I want to try different artistes, stories and technicians. So if someone wants a fresh start or a different approach, that’s fine. Anyone who has left our agency, I will always wish them well and continue to work with them. Many have left and I still collaborate with them. I’m not a talent manager per se, it’s just one arm of my company. I’m a filmmaker first. If someone is right for my film, I won’t cast them based on which agency they belong to.
There’s also concern about recent threats in the industry. Do you feel those difficult times linked to the underworld could return?
It is very worrisome... My thoughts are with those facing it today. But I do believe we are in good hands. Authorities act immediately and provide security. Every time I’ve reached out in a difficult situation, my city and state have been very supportive. I’ve always felt protected here, and I believe we will continue to be.
What makes Karan Johar the most angry, and what makes you the saddest?
What makes me angry is people who are not on time. I have an aversion to lack of punctuality. What makes me sad… I’m an old-fashioned loyalist. I will always be grateful to Aditya Chopra (filmmaker), Shah Rukh Khan (actor) and Yash Raj Films for being my mentors and my beginning. I say with pride that I would wipe the floors of YRF and Red Chillies. I would do anything that was asked because I owe my entire being to them. I don’t know if that level of loyalty exists anymore. But I am grateful to those who remain loyal to me. That is the first quality I look for in a person.
Delhi HC flags ‘bias’ in Aryan Khan’s The Ba***ds Of Bollywood satire of Sameer Wankhede

HINDUSTAN TIMES (November 19, 2025)
The Delhi High Court on Monday resumed hearing former NCB official Sameer Wankhede’s defamation plea against The Ba***ds Of Bollywood. The court pulled up Red Chillies Entertainment and Netflix, noting that while the show may be satirical, its portrayal of Wankhede appeared biased.
According to a report in NDTV, Wankhede sued Red Chillies, Netflix, and Aryan Khan for defamation. Aryan, actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son was arrested by Wankhede in 2021 when he was with the Narcotics Control Bureau, but later all charges against him were dropped. The IRS officer asked the court, “Do I deserve this trial in public opinion?”
Wankhede’s lawyer J Sai Deepak, cited self-proclaimed film critic Kamaal R Khan’s (KRK) post on X to demonstrate the threats and mockery he faced after the show aired. “The show has convinced people that I have no integrity — chor, and what else?” the lawyer said on Wankhede’s behalf
Appearing for Red Chillies, senior advocate Neeraj Kaul defended the show’s satire, saying, “I am entitled to do this. You are putting a gun to my head in the plaint. Of course, I can say that I am inspired by characters....Every producer, paparazzi can appear tomorrow, (saying) my face resembles.”
The advocate noted that cartoonist R K Laxman could satirically critique the Prime Minister, calling it a source of national pride. The court responded that, unlike The Ba***ds Of Bollywood, Laxman’s work showed no bias, unlike the context involving Aryan and Wankhede. The Delhi HC will continue hearing the matter on November 26.

Sameer Wankhede on taking Netflix, Red Chillies Entertainment to court over his depiction in The Ba***ds Of Bollywood
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 10, 2025)
In a tell-all interview, former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officer Sameer Wankhede calls his defamation case against The Ba***ds Of Bollywood a fight to preserve the dignity of his family and officers of the law. He also addresses ‘misleading narratives’ circulating in the media and claims of animosity towards actor Shah Rukh Khan.
Summons have been issued to Netflix and Red Chillies Entertainment. Do you see this as a sort of victory in your fight?
It was reported by some portals that my petition was ‘dismissed’, when I was asked just to file an amendment. We brought to the Court’s notice, too, that some PR campaign is running about my case being ‘dismissed’ or ‘rejected’. I have immense faith in our judiciary. I know that, if there is truth in whatever you are saying, the judiciary will take cognisance. I am happy that the High Court took a look at what we had to say. The hearing is scheduled for October 30.
You mention ‘PR campaigns’ against you. Can you elaborate?
Some meme pages related to the entertainment industry have been putting out half-baked news with flashy headlines without going into the merits of the case. My wife and sister have received humiliating messages on the lines of ‘Aapka case reject ho gaya, yahaan se laat mil gayi’, and dirty words I can’t say in the media. They humiliated the women of my house.
Who do you think is getting this done?
I don’t want to allege anything, but some fan pages and fan groups are deliberately sent to troll or send dirty messages to women so that they get offended, humiliated; it is mental torture. It doesn’t matter because we have taken all those things and presented before the court.
A section believes that you have some sort of animosity with Shah Rukh Khan, which goes back a long way...
I am an officer of the law; whatever books and Acts are there, I act as per that. We are not living in some kind of a banana republic out here. We have a constitution, a system, a set up. There’s a chain of command. I am a very small man — just a government servant. How can anybody have such a grudge and (do) all those things? There is a system for checks and balances. These claims are just loose talks.
Even though the court has decided to proceed with a hearing, there is a section that maintains you are doing all this for publicity and attention. What do you have to say about that?
It’s being said that my portrayal (in the show) was some kind of ‘satire’, but I’d like to state three things. First, I am fighting for the honour of my family. Self-respect is very important for any individual. Secondly, it is for the honour of the law enforcement officers, be it NCB, Customs or any department. Anti-drug operations are a serious thing. Officers shed their blood to fight (for the country): I have seen and been on operations where my staff suffered head injuries and legs were broken. You can’t make a satire at the expense of this. Thirdly, it is a matter of the national emblem — you cannot show a middle finger and play with national honour! As a citizen, I will definitely fight for these things.
Then there was the claim that your chats (with Shah Rukh) from 2021 were leaked by you (With reference to a corruption case filed by CBI).
I had filed a writ petition before the Bombay High Court, wherein I had to present evidence. So, why will I ‘leak’ (the chats), what is my motive? I will bring it to court. In any case, these things will come out when arguments happen (in court). The matter is subjudice. I have also submitted the 65B certificate (A 65B certificate is a legal document required under India’s Evidence Act, 1872 to authenticate electronic records, making them admissible as evidence in court).
Your defamation case is about a character in the show allegedly resembling and mocking you. Today, many celebrities have been approaching the court to get their personality rights protected. Do you think, had you also protected your personality rights, all this would not have happened?
This is a matter handled by my legal counsel, so it will be very immature to comment on anything that I’m not aware of. I’m not that well aware of these kinds of issues. It’s the first time I’m dealing with this.
Going forward, have you thought of getting your personality rights protected so it doesn’t happen again?
No, nothing as of now. I’m just focusing on the suit which I have filed, and I’ll be fighting for justice.
My last question to you, you are fighting this case for your dignity…
(cuts in) Not just my own, but the dignity of the department and officers also. So that next time, nobody makes a satire on cops or the law enforcement.
What sort of a future do you see for yourself and the department?
I am serving the government of India. So, like a loyal soldier, wherever I’m posted, I will be serving there. I will do my duty, that’s it.
Summons issued to Netflix, Red Chillies over Sameer Wankhede defamation suit

HINDUSTAN TIMES (October 9, 2025)
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to Red Chillies Entertainment, and Netflix in response to a defamation suit filed by Sameer Wankhede. The former Narcotics Control Bureau official has alleged that their series, The Ba***ds Of Bollywood, has deliberately damaged his reputation.
Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav issued summons to the defendants — Gauri Khan-owned Red Chillies Entertainment Private Limited, Netflix, X Corp (formerly Twitter), Google LLC, Meta Platforms, RPG Lifestyle Media Private Limited, and John Doe — in the defamation suit and asked them to file their replies within seven days. The next hearing is on October 30.
Appearing for Wankhede, senior advocate Sandeep Sethi also told the court, “In reference to the series, there are posts trolling me, my wife and my sister. Ex facie defamatory. It’s shocking. They (defendants) are surely not defending those posts.”
The Ba***ds Of Bollywood featured a ‘plain-clothed cop’, who raids a Bollywood party and detains an actor there even though he is not in possession of any narcotics. After the show’s release, many viewers said that the cop bore a resemblance to Wankhede.
Awara then went on to become one of Mao Zedong’s favourite films-Swapnil Rai

Diplomacy is not always about govts, or even intentional. Raj Kapoor’s ‘Awara’ enamored Mao Zedong, Big B was mobbed in Egypt, and SRK became a sensation in Germany. Swapnil Rai, a professor at the University of Michigan who has dived deep into this topic in her book ‘Networked Bollywood: How Star Power Globalized Hindi Cinema’, talks to Shruti Sonal about cinema as a potent tool for diplomacy
Shruti Sonal (THE TIMES OF INDIA; March 30, 2025)
Last month, a delegation from Indonesia surprised everyone by singing ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ at a banquet hosted by President Murmu. How influential is Bollywood as a tool for cultural diplomacy and have we used it well?
Since its inception, the mainstream Hindi film industry, or Bollywood, has had a very global value chain. Its films became popular in a lot of non-Anglophone regions, and that created soft power. However, that soft power remained very dissipated and stayed as a sort of undercurrent. It was never utilized in the way that it could have been by the Indian state or our embassies. Their programming was mostly focused on very traditional mediums like classical music, or classical dance. Even in terms of cinema, only parallel cinema was thought of as high culture. However, mainstream cinema has existed and circulated — especially with certain stars as its key drivers — outside of the nation state. This is quite different compared to countries such as China, that always wants to cultivate a kind of soft power through its English news channels like CGTN, or even the US through shows like Voice Of America. In the 1960s, for instance, a lot of American TV shows like Dallas were heavily subsidized and travelled around the world. India did not do any of that.
So then how did a film like Raj Kapoor’s Awara or Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots become so popular in China?
Bollywood’s soft power has existed outside the confines of the nation-state. To understand its influence, it’s good to go back to archives. For instance, in 1952, India was sending a cultural delegation to China, being the first country to recognize Mao Zedong’s govt. Mao asked for mainstream films to be sent along so he could understand India and its culture through cinema. I found a few letters that were exchanged, showing how everybody was scrambling, and mulling over which films to send. Eventually, they picked ‘Awara’ and Marathi film ‘Amar Bhoopali’. Of course, ‘Awara’ then went on to become one of Mao’s favourite films.
Why was the influence of stars like Raj Kapoor so potent?
My theoretical framework is that these stars hold ‘switching power’. To put it simply, a star can be a switch, which connects a circuit and illuminates a connection that did not exist before, in this case, new global markets. Hindi cinema has been very unique in the way that it has evolved because stars have been so central to the industry as businessmen, right from Raj Kapoor’s RK Films to SRK’s Red Chillies Productions. These are more than production companies; they often act as vertically integrated large conglomerates that have a lot of influence. Even today, when Netflix comes to India, they first meet SRK and Aamir Khan to strike deals. By combining their business acumen with their emotional and market pull, these male megastars have helped cinema go global. Interestingly, Hollywood has always been based on conglomerate-led productions, and only now do we have productions led by stars like Brad Pitt and Reese Witherspoon. There’s almost a Bollywoodizing of Hollywood.
The Khans turn 60 this year and many have talked about whether this is the end of the superstar era. Do you agree?
These stars have established themselves so much within the business that they will continue to have that power. The question is what is going to happen with a new crop of actors? The industry is now different than before. A lot of intermediaries such as casting and talent agencies have come into play. The kind of power that the older stars could possess doesn’t exist anymore. But with the coming of streaming platforms, a lot of the hierarchies based around networks of families, friends and kinships that existed before are being recreated. It’s just a different kind of power and it’s not as expansive as it was before.
Why has this nature of cross-border influence mostly excluded female Bollywood stars?
It’s very interesting how female stars are perceived through a very gendered lens, not just in India but abroad as well. When ‘Awara’ became popular, Nargis also became a huge star, travelling to the Soviet Union as part of delegations. ‘Pardesi’, one of the first Indo-Soviet collaborative films, had her as the female lead with a Russian as the male star. But despite all that, she wasn’t received in the same way as Raj Kapoor. I cite a particular letter about how nobody bothered to even drop her off at the airport in Moscow. In contrast, in an interview I did with the late Shyam Benegal, he told me how when he was in the Soviet Union with Raj Kapoor, they travelled in a train coupe used for the tsars! Years later, there was Aishwarya Rai who had the global press gushing about her superlative beauty, her eyes, and the fact that she spoke English better than the Royals. But even then, she did not have the same kind of direct business power as the male stars. It’s only in moments of flux, when industry structures change, that women get to have momentary agency. When Priyanka Chopra went to Hollywood, things were in a state of flux with the coming of streaming and she found a talent manager in Anjula Acharia, who made her a crossover star. There was another moment of change in the ’90s with liberalization, which is when people like Juhi Chawla got into production with SRK.
Shah Rukh Khan's Dunki to be re-released in theatres?

As Indian citizens are deported from the US and their stories come to light, sources say producers are planning to re-release Dunki that explored illegal immigration
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; February 8, 2025)
Over the past few days, our news feeds have been flooded with videos of Indians, in handcuffs, being deported from the US, as part of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. With the episode putting the spotlight on illegal immigration, it is being heard that Dunki (2023), which explored the theme, might return to theatres.
Sources reveal that discussions about a re-release are underway at Red Chillies Entertainment, which backed the Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu-starrer. “The situation with Indian immigrants being deported in terrible conditions has reignited conversations around the themes of Dunki. Like every Rajkumar Hirani film, it was always meant to be more than just a big-ticket release; it highlighted a real struggle. Given what’s happening now, the film’s story feels urgent,” says a source.
In Dunki, Khan played Hardy, who helps his Punjab-based friends as they take the illegal donkey route and migrate to the UK in the hope of a better life. The film depicted not only the risks involved in the donkey route, but also the hardships illegal migrants face in foreign countries.
An industry insider adds, “There is interest from distributors. The makers are looking at a potential release as early as this month.”
When mid-day texted Hirani, he said, “I’m not aware of any such plans, but I’d be happy if it re-releases. Illegal immigration has been happening for years from Punjab. It’s just that the rest of the country is becoming aware now.”
We also reached out to Red Chillies Entertainment, who didn’t respond till press time.

Bhakshak director Pulkit says his anger about the issue of child abuse in country’s shelter homes drove him to make Bhumi-starrer
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; January 31, 2024)
Movies are born out of many things—desire, passion, and sometimes, even rage. For director Pulkit, anger and urgency were the two emotions that drove him to make Bhakshak. Understandably so, considering the Bhumi Pednekar-starrer is inspired by the real-life cases of child abuse at shelter homes.
“We were trying to find a story that has social relevance, and landed on this [news] of shelter homes across the country facing such [atrocities]. When we started researching, we had sleepless nights thinking about the kids’ suffering. We were anxious and angry. We felt someone had to tell this story right. We had that urgency,” says the director, who co-wrote the film with partner Jyotsana Nath.
The Netflix release, also starring Sai Tamhankar and Sanjay Mishra, has been produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s banner. The director, who previously helmed Bose: Dead/Alive (2017), recalls how his social drama found takers immediately.
“Red Chillies [Entertainment] was the first production house that read the script and said yes to it.”
To Pulkit, Pednekar headlining Bhakshak is the biggest blessing. “Bhumi is one of those actors who understand the outer and inner workings of a character. The process becomes amazing when an actor is not concerned about the camera angles, the way s/he is looking, but is concerned about internalizing the character. Sometimes, when you ask for something, God blesses you with much more. That’s how I felt about working with Bhumi. If you see her notes, you’ll be surprised by how big the bundle is.”

The ’80s formula will work even 100 years later-Atlee

As Jawan takes the box office by storm, director Atlee on how he was inspired by ’80s films of Big B and Rajinikanth when creating the Shah Rukh Khan-led actioner
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; September 19, 2023)
Most filmmakers would term working with Shah Rukh Khan a dream come true. Not Atlee. The Tamil filmmaker, whose Jawan has become a stupendous success at the box office, had never even dreamt of working with the superstar. Reason? He believed it to be out of his reach. But a call from Red Chillies Entertainment in 2019 changed it.
“When I was making Bigil [2019], I got a call from them, saying, ‘Mr Khan wants to meet you.’ I thought it was a joke. But he did want to meet me. So, I flew down to Mumbai, and Shah Rukh sir said he wanted to do a film with me. A week later, he came to Chennai and saw Bigil’s rushes,” recalls Atlee.
The duo spoke for eight months before the director cracked the idea of Jawan—a vigilante actioner that would see Khan in a double role. For his debut Bollywood offering, Atlee knew he had the mammoth task of surpassing the expectations of the superstar’s legion of fans. But the key to achieve it was simple: stick to the basics.
“I’ve learnt a lot from [the late] MGR sir, Rajinikanth sir and Amitabh [Bachchan] sir. I’ve seen old, massy films of Amitabh sir. I stick to a basic formula that was used in the ’80s and ’90s. That’s a grammar liked by the audience. It’s not intellectual, but I believe it will work even 100 years down the line,” reasons the director.
One of Jawan’s highlights is Khan’s older character Vikram Rathore. What’s not to love about an ex-Army officer who beats his enemies to pulp while listening to music on his headphones and puffing cigars? While Atlee knew Rathore’s swag would be loved by viewers, his leading man preferred Azad.
“Shah Rukh sir said, ‘Azad is class.’ [However], he played Vikram Rathore in a way I couldn’t have imagined. When I asked him how he did it, he said, ‘It’s for you. You said Vikram is going to be the hero, and I played him like one.’”
In the garb of an entertainer, the Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi-starrer speaks of several socio-political issues. According to Atlee, films carry immense responsibility even if they are delivering entertainment.
“You should be a responsible filmmaker. Jawan is doing great commercially, but people are also taking something back with them. I am happy about this,” he says.
Tell him the audience is already demanding a sequel, and he smiles, saying, “We never discussed a sequel. If I get a great idea for Jawan 2, I’ll definitely make it.”
Shah Rukh Khan has taught me most of the things I know about storytelling and Bollywood-Kanika Dhillon

Writer Kanika, who started her career in Shah Rukh’s production house, on reuniting with the superstar for Dunki
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; July 30, 2023)
With Dunki, it’s a homecoming of sorts for Kanika Dhillon. Over 16 years ago, she began her Bollywood journey with Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment as a script supervisor and assistant director. Today, she shares the writing credit on the superstar’s Christmas offering.
“I am a fan first, so I was happy that I got to work with him again. I hope I get to do more work with him because that’s the dream,” begins Dhillon, who has co-written Dunki with director Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi.
During her four-year stint at Khan’s production house, Dhillon served as an assistant director on Om Shanti Om (2007), and wrote the screenplay and dialogues of Ra.One (2011). As she turns producer with Katha Pictures, she is reminded of her days as a rank newcomer.
“Shah Rukh is the best mentor I’ve ever had. He has taught me most of the things I know about storytelling and Bollywood. Also, I have worked with so many people, but I haven’t seen a producer like Shah Rukh. He is magnanimous, and teaches you to be a better human being.”
At the moment, Dhillon is busy with the prep of her maiden production, Do Patti that will be led by Kajol and Kriti Sanon. The thriller is set to go on floors in a month. What’s also keeping her busy is the sequel to Haseen Dillruba (2021), Phir Aayi Haseen Dillruba. While the Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey-starrer was directed by Vinil Mathew, the sequel has been helmed by Jayprad Desai. Dhillon, who serves as a writer and co-producer, promises more twists with Phir Aayi Haseen Dillruba.
“It is twice as wicked and unpredictable as the first film. We were so happy with the love we got for Haseen Dillruba. So, we are coming with the sequel soon.”
From an assistant director to a writer to now a producer, it has been a long and steady rise for Dhillon. “I feel a sense of gratitude when writers come up to me and say, ‘Ma’am, your work has inspired us to write more.’ They can see that you can achieve milestones in your career.”

Kartik Aaryan has been in the news lately, following his exit from Dostana 2 and alleged fallout with Dharma Productions over creative differences. Last week it was reported that Kartik lost out on another big project — Red Chillies Entertainment’s Freddy, to be directed by Ajay Bahl, and on Monday, it was reported that he was replaced by Ayushmann Khurrana in Aanand L Rai’s next production. There have been various theories doing the rounds online on Kartik’s sudden exit from various projects since then.
On Dostana’s front, both parties maintained a dignified silence, barring a Dharma statement that said, ‘Dostana 2 will be recast due to professional circumstances’. Red Chillies chose not to comment on Freddy. However, Rai was quick to deny the story and called it ‘baseless rumours’. He clarified that they had met Kartik for a different film and are still in talks. In a statement, he said, “We have taken another film to Ayushmann and this is a complete mix up.”
About the recent turn of events, an industry insider told Bombay Times, “Kartik parted ways with Red Chillies’ Freddy in January. Things didn’t work out. There was no bad blood. That film hasn’t taken off yet and the makers themselves wanted changes in the script and director Ajay Bahl was clear that he won’t make any. No one has been signed for it, so Kartik saying no to being cast alongside Katrina Kaif is bizarre. Why are these stories coming out now?” While the production house hasn’t commented yet, a source clarified, “Yes, Kartik has returned the money and the production house has no issues with him. The film will take off this year with Bahl, but they haven’t cast anyone yet.”
As far as Rai is concerned, the insider adds, “He had narrated a different story to Kartik, which he wasn’t excited about. It’s common for directors to pitch multiple stories to actors and then brainstorm on what they want to make. Nothing concrete happened in that meeting. The story offered to Ayushmann was totally different, so there is no question of Kartik being replaced.”
Kartik’s upcoming line-up has Ram Madhvani’s Dhamaka, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 with Anees Bazmee, Hansal Mehta’s next and Sajid Nadiadwala’s upcoming love story.
Kartik Aaryan no longer a part of Shah Rukh Khan’s next production?

BOMBAY TIMES (May 28, 2021)
Kartik Aaryan was recently in the news for his fallout with Karan Johar’s production house. Reportedly, after 20 days of shooting for Dostana 2, he had disagreements with the producers over the script, which led them to parting ways subsequently. Dharma Productions even issued a statement in which they said, “Due to professional circumstances, on which we have decided to maintain a dignified silence — we will be recasting Dostana 2, directed by Collin D’Cunha.”
In a recent development, the Pati Patni Aur Woh actor is reportedly no longer a part of Shah Rukh Khan’s production house, Red Chillies Entertainment’s film Freddy. The movie was to be directed by Ajay Bahl, who had previously helmed BA Pass. Kartik was supposed to star opposite Katrina Kaif in the venture.
Sources have it that, this time again, the actor demanded some changes in the script, which didn’t go down well with the makers. The argument lies in the fact that the actor has been raising concerns about the scripts and his roles after signing on the dotted line. However, fortunately, in this case, he hasn’t shot for the film yet, and apparently, he has also returned the signing amount.
We reached out to Kartik as well as the production house. While the actor didn’t wish to comment, there was no response from the production house till the time of going to press.

Shah Rukh buys the Los Angeles franchise and names it LA Knight Riders which will compete in a six-team T20 tournament in America on the lines of the IPL
Vijay Tagore (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 1, 2020)
After taking Bollywood to Hollywood, Shah Rukh Khan has set his sights on America again. Not as actor, but for a T20 cricket tournament on the lines of the Indian Premier League, where he owns the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise. The Bollywood superstar has acquired the Los Angeles franchise in the soon-to-be-launched Major Cricket League, which will be played in the US and will have six teams based in New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles. Mumbai Mirror can reveal that Shah Rukh’s team will be called LA Knight Riders, following the pattern that started with Kolkata, and continued with his second T20 team – Trinbago Knight Riders – that plays in the Caribbean Premier League.
This newspaper has learnt that one of Shah Rukh’s firms is a part owner of the American T20 league’s organising company, the American Cricket Enterprise, which obtained the rights to conduct the tournament from USA Cricket, an affiliate of the International Cricket Council. Sources associated with the tournament said that Shah Rukh has managed to obtain the ‘Indian exclusivity’ in the league, which means no team from the Indian Premier League can be part of the American league for at least five years. “The tournament is scheduled to start in the summer of 2022, immediately after the IPL that year,” the source said.
Shah Rukh, in a statement to Mumbai Mirror yesterday, confirmed his interest in the American league. “For several years now, we have been expanding the Knight Riders brand globally, and closely watching the potential for T20 cricket in the USA. We are convinced that Major League Cricket has all the pieces in place to execute on its plans and we look forward to making our partnership an enormous success in the coming years,” the statement said. The league sources said that the actor’s company will also contribute towards building cricket stadiums in the American cities involved in the tournament.
Venky Mysore, the Kolkata Knight Riders and Red Chillies Entertainment CEO, said, that the Knight Riders have had a keen interest in the development of the game in the US. “Our expansion into the US market is consistent with our long-term strategy. We look forward to the new challenge of building cricket in the world’s most sophisticated sports and media market. We believe that we can bring a huge amount of expertise to help make the Major League Cricket realise the potential that it undoubtedly has,” Mysore said.
The Major League Cricket, the organizers said, will deliver the highest quality professional T20 cricket for the US fans, which includes a huge number of immigrants from the Indian subcontinent. The league will feature top international players from the US and around the world, underpinned by a focus on pathways to develop a homegrown player pool for USA Cricket and the league, the organisers said.
Soon after taking over as the International Cricket Council chairman, New Zealander Greg Barclay said that cricket’s governing body should explore America for the further development of the game. Seems, SRK had that plan in the bag for a while.

Sources say Shah Rukh Khan, who played Alia Bhatt's counsellor in Dear Zindagi, in talks with the actor for next production
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; August 28, 2020)
Almost four years after a memorable collaboration in Gauri Shinde's Dear Zindagi, rumours are rife that Shah Rukh Khan is set to reunite with Alia Bhatt. Where he played her counsellor in the 2016 coming-of-age drama, the superstar will serve as the producer, this time around.
A source reveals, "Among the many projects on Red Chillies Entertainment's roster is a woman-led comic-drama. The first round of narration has happened with Alia, who has expressed her interest in the subject. She will hear the final script in the coming months, post which she will sign on the dotted line. The makers have a few directors in mind and will zero in on one soon. The film is likely to go on floors by early next year." In the meantime, Bhatt will wrap up the shoot of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi.
mid-day reached out to Khan and Bhatt's teams, who remained unavailable for comment.

Rakesh Roshan develops Krrish 4 script during the lockdown, Hrithik Roshan to reunite with Jadoo in film about intergalactic travel
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; July 8, 2020)
Seven years since Krrish 3 (2013), Hrithik Roshan is gearing up to don the superhero cape again. Work on Krrish 4 had been put on hold when Rakesh Roshan was diagnosed with throat cancer last year, but now, the filmmaker has utilised the lockdown to develop a worthy script. In the fourth instalment, India's favourite superhero will apparently travel in time to bring back his scientist father Rohit Mehra, and his trusted extra-terrestrial friend, Jadoo. While Roshan was exploring several concepts in the past months, a trade source reveals that the idea of intergalactic travel appealed to Hrithik. "As soon as they finalised the idea, Rakesh ji began the pre-production work with Rajesh Roshan taking over the music department."
"Given the movie's ambitious theme, the director has entrusted Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies with the visual effects. He intends to introduce an army of super villains who will battle the hero and has hired a Hollywood designer to give a distinct look to each baddie," says the source.
Like the previous two outings, the fourth instalment will see Hrithik in a double role — as Krrish, and his father, Rohit Mehra. With Mehra's character shown as being killed in the earlier edition, the story will focus on the protagonist's efforts to bring his dad back from the dead. "Rohit is integral to the story as he is the only person who can contact Jadoo. Rakesh ji has designed the script cleverly to incorporate the much loved alien from Koi Mil Gaya [2003]. While the cast is yet to be determined, Priyanka Chopra is not expected to reprise her role," says the source, adding that the sci-fi movie may go on floors in January 2021.
When mid-day reached out to Roshan to confirm the development, the filmmaker said, "We are still working on the script."

Marathi screenwriters move HC against Shah Rukh-backed Netflix series alleging copyright infringement, claim '10 plot points' similar to their zombie film
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; May 23, 2020)
No sooner did the trailer of Betaal drop online last week than Marathi screenwriters Sameer Wadekar (right) and Mahesh Gosawi moved the Bombay High Court, alleging that Netflix and Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment have lifted the plot of their zombie film, Vetaal."We had taken our script to several production houses. We hadn't pitched it to Red Chillies Entertainment, so the onus isn't on them, but on the platform that commissioned it. I haven't been able to figure out how [the idea] reached them. I am told the show went on floors in July 2019, a year after my script was registered with the Screen Writers' Association [SWA]. We've registered a complaint with the SWA too," said Wadekar, hours after the hearing on Friday.
While Betaal — written by Patrick Graham and Suhani Kanwar — revolves around a counter-insurgency squad that aims to displace tribals from a village, Wadekar claimed their Marathi feature is centred on an environmentalist who opposes a mining company that tries to drive away the villagers.Drawing parallels, he said, "There are at least 10 plot points that are similar. We have depicted zombies as descendants of the Vetaal army from Shivaji's era while, in Betaal, they are shown as belonging to the British era. We had written a sequence where the army dances to folk music during a procession. A similar scene is included in their trailer."
Though the Bombay High Court dismissed their petition to put a stay on the show, he has a glimmer of hope. "The court has affirmed that we can seek damages if the plagiarism charges are proved."
Netflix remained unavailable for comment.
I can't be doing the same stuff all my life-Emraan Hashmi

Emraan Hashmi, who makes his digital debut with Bard Of Blood, now wants to surprise the audience and begin anew
Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; September 29, 2019)
He feels his sugar level is dipping. Emraan Hashmi's already given some 15 interviews and has more lined up. The actor deliberates over candy or perhaps a hot cup of coffee to recharge his batteries.
We are with him at a Lower Parel hotel where he is promoting his digital debut, Bard Of Blood. Last seen in Why Cheat India earlier this year, Hashmi is the latest Bollywood star to jump onto the digital bandwagon with the Netflix series. The actor says he "was not apprehensive about taking the web route. It is just something that did not cross my mind earlier. Initially, there is always resistance to something new."
Bard Of Blood, which also marks Shah Rukh Khan's digital debut as producer, is based on Bilal Siddiqi's 2015 novel of the same name. "I knew Bilal and we used to talk about bringing the spy thriller alive on the screen. We would often discuss the names of the actors who could play the protagonist."
Siddiqi co-wrote Hashmi's book, The Kiss of Life, an autobiographical account of how the actor coped when his son Ayan was diagnosed with cancer. "So when the project was taking shape, Bilal suggested I give it a shot as I had not explored the medium or played a character of an espionage agent before," he says.
Hashmi took it up "as a challenge to test my skills as an actor. I can't be doing the same stuff all my life. An actor has to keep reinventing himself. A film has its space, it is something you are familiar with, but the web world is a different ball game. At the end of the day, you have to test your skills as an actor."
In Bard Of Blood, Hashmi plays Kabir, a former Indian spy who now teaches William Shakespeare to school students. "People have a certain image of me. The last thing that anyone would imagine was me speaking Shakespearean language." This was yet another reason for him to take the plunge. "I would not have got a Bollywood film of this nature in which the characters are so nuanced and detailed. Something that is real and entertaining where the focus is only on the story. I wanted to go into a direction in which something new is expected of me."

Ever since he experienced success with films like Murder (2004), Aashiq Banaya Aapne (2005) and Gangster (2006), Hashmi became to be known as Bollywood's serial kisser having locked lips with all his heroines. Hashmi, 40, says, "Some 10 years down the line, I don't want to be that guy who puckers up with girls half his age on screen. Back then, I was some sort of a cultural phenomenon. We, Indians, are not open about sex and kissing though today's kids are. It is still something that is discussed in hushed tones. So, I became this guy who made all their fantasies come true." He says it "is difficult but not impossible to shed this screen persona. I want to deconstruct myself and start afresh. I want to constantly remind the audience that I can do this as well." He hopes that his upcoming slate of films, which include The Body, Mumbai Saga, Chehre and Ezra does so.
Hashmi is also synonymous with having chartbusters, "make that Sufi songs," he says in his films. "Imagine if I had to break into a song every few minutes in Bard Of Blood, except for India no other Netflix viewer from around the globe would stay tuned. They would most likely switch off. Now, I don't miss the song and dance. I have moved on," he says.
From Book To Screen
Author Bilal Siddiqi on whose book Bard Of Blood is based was interning with Shah Rukh Khan’s production house, Red Chillies, when a casual conversation about the spy thriller resulted in making it into a web series. He presented the book to SRK who liked it. "He was contemplating getting into the digital medium and felt this was apt. Everyone liked the conflict in the title. You don’t associate William Shakespeare with blood," says Siddiqi.
Director Ribhu Dasgupta, who recently wrapped up the Parineeti Chopra starrer The Girl On The Train, makes his digital debut with the seven-episode show. He says, "I had not read Bilal’s book till I was on board to helm the series. What attracted me was the genre as I am inclined to thrillers. The way it was written, it was visually rich, which made it ideal for a screen adaptation. We shot extensively in New Delhi, Rajasthan and Ladakh in freezing cold," says Dasgupta who has also directed the Amitabh Bachchan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer Te3n (2016). "The audience usually binge watches web shows, so each episode has to be captivating in order that they continue viewing," he says.
Adds Gaurav Verma of Red Chillies, "We spent a lot of time in pre-production as we wanted to cast actors who have not done anything similar before. We were all working together for the first time so we wanted the approach to be new and interesting."

Emraan Hashmi on foraying into the web with Shah Rukh Khan-backed spy thriller, Bard Of Blood
MID-DAY (August 22, 2019)
Given his experimental streak, it was only a matter of time before Emraan Hashmi would dive into the digital world. Almost a year after he announced his first collaboration with Netflix, the actor is ready with Bard Of Blood, a web series based on Bilal Siddiqi's book by the same name. The spy thriller also has the distinction of being the first original developed by Shah Rukh Khan's stable, Red Chillies Entertainment, for the streaming giant. mid-day was privy to the first look of the Ribhu Dasgupta-directed series, the trailer of which drops online today.
"You will first spot Kabir Anand in Mumbai as a literature professor, teaching Shakespeare in college. He is then reluctantly pulled into the battlefield because of a certain situation," begins Hashmi of his character, a former spy who has swapped guns and a gritty life for a peaceful existence as a professor in the remote mountains of Panchgani. However, a call from the PMO thrusts him back to the unforgiving terrain of Balochistan where he has to rescue four Indian Intelligence Wing (IIW) officers who have been captured. The actor adds that his character's troubled backstory adds to the layered narrative, that also features Sobhita Dhulipala, Kirti Kulhari and Vineet Kumar Singh in pivotal roles.
No subject has been off-limits for Hashmi whose eclectic filmography makes room for a middle-of-the-road film Shanghai (2012) as well as a mainstream and commercial fare like the Raaz series. The actor admits that it is his creative pursuit that has made him explore the OTT platform. "I've always believed that in movies, because of the very nature of the business, there are a few stereotypes that one has to abide by. That is not the case here. One can try out nice and experimental ideas with a platform like this. I probably consume more than 80 to 90 per cent of my media through Netflix."

Happy 40th birthday Emraan Hashmi: He is down but not out; all set to follow Saif Ali Khan and storm the web series space!

Bollywood is quite ruthless or some would say, practical. An actor’s box office track record plays a very important role in determining if the actor will survive in the rat race or fade into oblivion. Several actors, who were once ruling or were ‘the next big thing’ have stopped getting work after giving back to back flops. A few of them are still securing films for ‘nepotism’ reasons or for having solid connections. But an actor who stands out in this regard is definitely Emraan Hashmi.
The actor started out in a big way. He is credited as the pioneer of making sex and kissing scenes mainstream in Bollywood. Earlier, it was only B-grade films that would mostly deal with skin show. However, with his second film Murder, it all changed. It was a fully A-grade film and yet had some scintillating lovemaking sequences, with co-actor Mallika Sherawat. The fact that it had super-hit music also helped in getting audiences to cinemas in large numbers. Not just frontbenchers but all sections of society gave the film thumbs up. As a result, the film that was made on a shoestring budget earned almost five times its investment. It made it clear that audiences are ready for bold content and thus began the trend of A-grade actors and actresses shedding their clothes and inhibitions on screen.
As for Emraan Hashmi, he repeated his act in many other films. He mostly played morally wrong, twisted, rebellious character that has a way with women. As a result, the masses whole-heartedly accepted him with open arms! I remember watching Baadshaho two years back on the first day at Mumbai’s premiere single screen complex, Gaiety-Galaxy. Emraan himself came there during the intermission and the way the crowd went berserk was seen to be believed! It was as if an actor of Salman Khan’s stardom was present in the auditorium! And Emraan enjoyed this popularity even when his films were failing.
The initial phase of his career was more or less fine. There came a point in 2006-07 when lot of his films flopped. But with the super-success of Jannat in 2008, his career got a new lease of life. He then followed it up with more hit films like Raaz: The Mystery Continues, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, Murder 2, The Dirty Picture and Jannat 2. With Raaz 3 in 2012, he reached the pinnacle of success and everyone thought sky would be the limit for him. Alas, the opposite happened. After Raaz 3, he acted in 11 films out of which only Ek Thi Daayan was an average grosser. The rest of the 10 films were all flops! Some of the films were not masala, which is his forte, and he tried his hands in experimental cinema. Then there were two films – Rush and Ungli – that were delayed. But the rest of the films like Raja Natwarlal, Raaz Reboot, Azhar, Mr X, Baadshaho etc were all conventional, mainstream films. But none of these films had a well-written script. Even the music score, once his forte, in these films wasn’t up to the mark. His last film released recently, Why Cheat India. It was an important film for him as he had turned producer. Unfortunately, the film never opened well due to lack of buzz. Public reaction was negative due to which it couldn’t even cross Rs. 10 crore!
Despite such failures, Emraan Hashmi is not yet out and is going nowhere. He has an important film in his kitty, The Body. It is the remake of the Spanish film of the same name and is directed by Jeethu Joseph, who directed the original Drishyam. Besides Emraan, it also stars Rishi Kapoor and Sobhita Dhulipala, the latter who is making waves at presence thanks to her web show Made In Heaven. Recently, another remake of a Spanish thriller Badla did roaring business at the box office and it remains to be seen if The Body also gets similar kind of success. And post the debacle of Why Cheat India, Emraan was signed on for another exciting film, titled Barf. It co-stars none other than mega star Amitabh Bachchan. This is a courtroom drama and it also features Annu Kapoor and Saurabh Shukla.
And that’s not all. Emraan Hashmi is also simultaneously working on the Netflix show, Bard Of Blood. It is adapted from a book of the same name and is backed by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment. It will be aired this year and is expected to be a rage, on the lines of last year’s Sacred Games. This web series starred Saif Ali Khan who surprisingly also had a similar journey like Emraan Hashmi. Even his films didn’t work back to back and finally he tasted success on the OTT platform. At the same time, his film Baazaar was his rare success after ages. It remains to be seen if Emraan also has a similar trajectory. He is a fine performer and as a person, he has been no-nonsense and non-controversial. As he turns 40 today, we give him our best wishes and here’s hoping he continues to get work and that he continues to entertain us!
Bard Of Blood can’t be illogical and jingoistic like most of our films-Emraan Hashmi

Sonil Dedhia (MID-DAY; January 10, 2019)
Besides being the first Netflix original from Shah Rukh Khan’s stable, Bard Of Blood enjoys another distinction. The spy thriller, an adaptation of Bilal Siddiqi’s book by the same name, also marks Emraan Hashmi’s foray into the digital space.
The actor asserts that the dynamics of the OTT platform are markedly different from that of Hindi cinema. “It’s like shooting three films simultaneously. We have seven episodes, each 45-minute-long,” says Hashmi of the show that has him play a former R&AW agent, who is recalled from his new life as a Shakespeare professor, to save his country.
Although a spy thriller on the surface, Hashmi points out that the makers need to adopt a different tonality when creating content for a global audience. “We are catering to 190 countries; so, the concept of ‘Indianising’ things doesn’t apply here. It has to be real; It can’t be illogical and jingoistic like most of our films.”
Hashmi is no stranger to Siddiqi’s works, having co-written The Kiss Of Life [Hashmi’s book chronicling his son’s battle with cancer] with him. He says he couldn’t have asked for a better debut vehicle. “When Red Chillies offered the show, they felt I might have reservations about foraying into the OTT platform. I had already read the book, and when I read the first three episodes of the adaptation, I decided to give it a shot.”
The actor — who will be seen next in Cheat India — adds that the show is likely to drop online by August-end.
