I hope I'm in all of Sanjay Leela Bhansali sir's films-Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh exults after passing the Monday test with flying colours
Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 23, 2015)

Peshwa Bajirao sneaked into a packed Chandan Cinema on Sunday evening just when “Malhari“ began to play.Wearing a black hoodie, his mooch shaved off and no shendi to flaunt, he looked nothing like the warrior hero from the film, a look he'd been carrying for the past year-and-a-half. Recalling the first time he heard the song, the actor says, “I had just got my mundan done when Bhansali sir called me to the recording studio to check out my bald avatar. He put on “Malhari“ for me and I just got up and started dancing, telling him the beats were even faster than Ram Leela's 'Tatad tatad',“ Ranveer reminisces, breaking into his signature step while speaking.

He's just been through the darkest phase of his life. He hurt his shoulder early in the shoot and couldn't move his arm even an inch higher than shoulder level for the longest time. “When Kashi comes to Shaniwarwada with our newborn, I couldn't even hold my prosthetic child in my arms. I had just jumped out of bed and my shoulder was as flat as a chapati. The pain was excruciating but it's worth it today given all the praise that is flooding in,“ he smiles, pointing out that he also lost big money from endorsements, films and TV shows because no one wanted a bald guy with a twirling moustache.

On Monday night, he partied with Arjun and Anil Kapoor, who were thrilled to see him clean-shaven and suited up after months. “Arjun told me, 'Baba, I saw the making of the Malhari video, you went ballistic!' Anil Kapoor told me I was India's answer to Russell Crowe from Gladiator. It's like an avalanche of praises!“ he exults.

Another overwhelming reaction was holding his mom in his arms while she sobbed for half-an-hour. “She doesn't like films in which I die,“ he explains, adding that his father was upset that the project had affected his health, and taken up too much of his time. “But when he watched the movie he agreed that it had been worth it.“

The film released with Shah Rukh Khan's Dilwale on Friday and has been holding stead. “We got in some good numbers over the first weekend, internationally too, and have passed the Monday test with flying colours,“ he beams. But there are no plans to rest on his laurels.

There's talk of him stepping into Sanjay Dutt's shoes for the remake of Subhash Ghai's 1993 action-thriller Khalnayak. “The day the Bajirao shoot got over, I asked Mr Bhansali when we were shooting again, where I should report. The idea is to keep growing as an actor. I want to sustain this momentum with more evolved, braver choices,“ he insists.

Taking a moment to admit that he has not met Bhansali since the release to officially discuss the way forward, he says that they share a special equation. “I hope and pray that I am the leading man in his next film and all his coming films,“ says Ranveer. “I've just done two films, back-to-back with him and spent a considerable part of the last five years with him. In a recent interview he admitted I have become his muse... His expression. I am waiting for him to call me for Khalnayak. I am ready. After Bajirao, I think I have earned it.“

Meet the inspirational figure who's helping Ranveer Singh with his recovery

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 7, 2015)

Ranveer Singh underwent surgery on April 4 to fix his shoulder, which had been injured after he fell off a horse while shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's period love story, Bajirao Mastani, in Jaipur. After three weeks of rest, followed by four months of physiotherapy, the actor is back to filming strenuous action sequences, 16 hours a day.

Speaking to Mirror (August 31) the 29-year-old actor asserted that his recovery "has been three times faster than normal, like that of a professional athlete" and credited a special someone for this. Now, Mirror has learnt that the special somebody is Jaret Grossman, a steroid-free bodybuilder, certified personal trainer, motivational speaker and fat loss expert, who has inspired millions through online public-speaking videos and articles.

"Ranveer has been listening to Jaret while working out in the gym for long hours. This has helped him reach the highest levels of mental and physical fitness that he possibly can," a source close to the actor told Mirror.

Jaret was a scrawny 98-pound boy who took up wrestling in the 8th grade, winning only two out of 23 matches. But eventually, he became New York's numero uno wrestler. While recuperating, Ranveer learnt that Jaret had suffered numerous injuries, including a torn labrum, split biceps tendon, a fractured rib, and a fractured ankle, and rehabilitated his body through strength training. He has been recommending the technique to his film fraternity friends who are looking at getting a six-pack.

Ranveer acknowledged Jaret's contribution saying, "Before I put on my uber-cool headphones gifted by my buddy Arjun Kapoor, I listen to four albums by Jaret on full volume while sweating it out at the gym."

My recovery has been five times faster than normal-Ranveer Singh

Come September, and Ranveer Singh in full armour, sword in one hand and shield in the other, will ride into the battle field on a white stallion. For the next two months, he will be shooting all the war sequences for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's period romance, Bajirao Mastani. There will be plenty of sword fighting and physical combat but Ranveer is confident that his shoulder will hold up.
On April 3, the 30-year-old actor had quietly checked into the Hinduja Clinic to fix the shoulder he had injured, when he had fallen off a horse, while shooting an action sequence in Jaipur. Post the surgery he was advised complete rest for three weeks and two months of physiotherapy. If he was spotted painting the town red with a sling around his neck, promoting Zoya Akhtar's upcoming film, Dil Dhadakne Do, it's because, as he says, “Mard ko dard nahin hota“ and “Badi badi filmon mein aisi chhoti chhoti baatein hoti rehti hain.“

In June, Ranveer was back on the sets in Mumbai, in his Bajirao avatar, but he started slow with dialogue heavy scenes. With a smile, he'd played down his injury, saying, “It's a part-and-parcel of the profession. I'm going about my rehabilitation aggressively and am looking forward to getting back on the set.“

Bajirao Mastani is scheduled for a Christmas release and despite the intense pain, Ranveer has been shooting 12-18 hours a day. He even moved out of his family home (Mirror, June 24) into a rented apartment closer to the sets. This was to cut down on travel and avoid missing out on physio sessions.

“I have been treated like an athlete. The physiotherapy programme I've been assigned is the same as one of a professional sportsman,“ Ranveer told Mirror. “It's three-long hours every day. An hour in the morning, followed by an hour right in the middle of my shoot and an hour post-wrap up.“

And all his diligence has definitely paid off. “Now I'm fighting fit. I'll say that my recovery has been five times faster than that of a normal person,“ he smiles.

The unit will be shooting around-the-clock till November. “There are two units filming day and night. Deepika Padukone as Mastani has been filming with one. After she finishes, the unit starts prepping for Ranveer. He has been canning shots with both the units all through August. It's been a gruelling schedule for him but Ranveer never complains,“ informs a source from the film set.

Priyanka Chopra plays his first wife, Kashibai and will be joining Ranveer by September-end for some high drama. “Everybody only sees the energetic Ranveer. Behind all the jumping around, is a hardworking person who goes all out for each shot. I've played his girlfriend, sister and now, wife for reel and have seen him in all his avatars. His commitment to the job is applause worthy. Sanjay sir couldn't have asked for a better Bajirao!“

Ranveer Singh’s injury compels him to wait for 2 months to shoot action scenes in Bajirao Mastani?

Ranveer Singh, who suffered a shoulder injury while shooting a fight sequence for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani, is back on the set. However, the actor can shoot for intense action sequences only after two months.

Following the injury, Ranveer was advised three- week bed rest followed by physiotherapy and it took him two-and-a-half months to recover. Even now, the actor can only shoot light action sequences. Therefore, Bhansali is completing other scenes with him.

A source says, “While Ranveer was away, the director finished shooting with his co-stars Deepika and Priyanka. The actor has resumed work and will begin shooting lighter sequences for now as the doctors have strictly instructed Ranveer to not shoot for scenes which require a lot of hand and shoulder movement.
The high octane action scenes will be shot in September. Also, a few shots require harsh sunlight which is also why the intense action sequences will be shot after the monsoon.”

While Ranveer remained unavailable for comment, his spokesperson confirms the news and says, “Ranveer will shoot for intense action sequences in September as instructed by the doctors.”

Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali says, “He (Ranveer) has started shooting for action sequences.”

Enlarge ImageRanveer Singh who was just discharged from the hospital following a shoulder surgery, is curently resting at home. The actor has been advised complete bed rest for a couple of weeks. He has been catching up on all the films that he missed out. He, however, is upset that he hasn’t been able to watch Sushant Singh Rajput’s latest release. Our source reveals, “Ranveer loves Dibakar Banerjee and his films. He has always mentioned that he is waiting to work with the filmmaker. In fact, he was looking forward to watching Detective Byomkesh Bakshy because he had heard so much about the film. However, due to his injury, he is stuck at home and is very upset on having missed out on the film. Hence, he made a call to Dibakar to apologise for the same and said that once he was out of house arrest, the first thing he would do is head to the nearest theatre to watch the film.”

If sources are to be believed, Deepika Padukone stayed close to rumoured beau Ranveer Singh’s side for an entire night at a Khar hospital after he underwent surgery for a shoulder injury.

The actor hurt himself while shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani and was advised to seek medical help. He was discharged on Sunday afternoon and his ladylove made a quiet exit from the hospital backdoor to avoid the paparazzi.

Says a source, “Deepika arrived at the hospital on Saturday around 9 pm and stayed by Ranveer’s side till he was discharged yesterday (Sunday) at 12.30 pm. He posed for media photographers while leaving the hospital with his parents and in the meanwhile, Dippy left through the back exit. As the hospital is in a residential area, she was able to leave discreetly.”

Ranveer tweeted on Sunday afternoon, “Surgery went well... Back home now & all set for the Rehab phase... Thank u all for ur love & concern! ( sic).” Incidentally, in 2013, when Ranveer was undergoing treatment for dengue, Dippy paid him a visit with special permission from the hospital authorities.

Ranveer Singh to undergo shoulder surgery today; will be out of action for a month

Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 4, 2015)

Ranveer Singh quietly checked into Hinduja clinic in Friday for a surgery to fix his injured shoulder. He will be operated on today. The surgery is scheduled for 8 am, after which he has been advised complete rest for three weeks, followed by physiotherapy. He will be allowed to go back to work by the end of this month, but only to film scenes where he is required to talk, without any physical action. As of now, the actor is looking at a long sick leave, which will not end before the first week of May.

The actor injured his shoulder last month, after he fell off a horse while shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's period love story, Bajirao Mastani, in Jaipur. He was rushed to a local hospital and everyone was relieved when the diagnosis revealed that it was not a fracture. Ranveer put up a brave front, reassuring his fans on Twitter, "Mard ko Dard nahi hota.... aur badi badi filmon mein aisi chhoti chhoti baatein hoti rehti hain ;) #shithappens".

Since Bajirao Mastani is scheduled for a Christmas release, despite the intense pain, the actor wanted to continue shooting and was hoping that with regular physiotherapy he'd be able to avoid surgery. According to a source close to the actor, Ranveer has, over the last month, consulted several specialists, both in India and abroad. And after tests and MRI scans, the unanimous opinion was that he should go in for surgery to avoid the risk of recurring injury and longterm damage.

Speaking to Mirror, Ranveer, still trying to play down the injury, said that they are a part-and-parcel of the profession. "I'm going about my rehabilitation aggressively and diligently and looking forward to getting back on the set soon," he said, adding that Bhansali has been extremely supportive. "I'm truly grateful to him."
