I have no choice but to fly back to Dubai-Ram Kapoor

Neha Maheshwri (BOMBAY TIMES; March 22, 2026)

Amid tensions in West Asia that have led many to reconsider travel plans, Ram Kapoor is preparing to return to Dubai next week to complete pending work. The actor had travelled to the city with his wife, Gautami, two weeks ago but cut the trip short as the situation escalated.

He says, “Last time, we were there for about a week. I thought I would come back to Mumbai and wait for things to calm down before starting again. But now I don’t have a choice. My work is still pending, and the situation does not seem likely to resolve anytime soon and appears to be escalating. It could continue for months, or even longer. If that is the case, I cannot delay any further. I will have to go and complete the timelines I had planned, despite the situation.”

The urgency, he explains, is tied to strict timelines. He shares, “There is work underway at my home in the Burj Khalifa. We received the necessary permissions and have a fixed timeframe within which it needs to be completed, but everything has now come to a standstill. I could request an extension, but we don’t know how long this situation will last. So the idea is to continue with the work and try to finish it as per the original plan. People I know in Dubai are continuing with their lives as much as possible. It’s not an ideal situation, but I am not panicking.”

This time, Gautami will not be travelling with him. He says, “I’m going alone. I am flying on Tuesday after finishing a few things here. I expect to be there for a couple of weeks this time.”

While there are concerns at home, his family understands the situation. He shares, “My children are a lot like me. Even if they panic initially, once I speak to them, they calm down. In fact, they end up reassuring their mother. Gautami does worry, but she understands that this is important and that I can’t miss the time frame.”

He also points to the safety measures in place. “Dubai is very well organised and capable of ensuring safety. Even where my house is, it is one of the most protected buildings in the country, which is something I have explained to Gautami,” he concludes.

I am guilty as charged, but hear me out...-Ram Kapoor

Ram Kapoor

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; June 26, 2025)

Ram Kapoor has found himself at the centre of controversy just ahead of his OTT release, co-starring Mona Singh. The actor has been removed from all promotional duties following allegations that he made sexually inappropriate and offensive remarks to members of the show’s marketing and publicity teams during press interviews. The remarks reportedly made several crew members uncomfortable, prompting the platform to act. Ram opens up about the incident, saying, “I am guilty as charged, but let me justify…”

What happened:
During a media interaction activity, as a part of the promotions of his upcoming web series Mistry, Ram Kapoor passed comments on the clothes of some of the streaming platform’s female executives, saying, “If they are in my line of sight, how can I not look?”

He reportedly made repeated comments about kissing a male executive from the show’s marketing team and also implied that his mother ‘should have gone to sleep’ instead of conceiving him. He also made jokes about feeling ‘gang-raped’ in front of a journalist and also referred to sex positions. Following this, a source from the platform on which Mistry will stream, told an entertainment news publication, “This workplace prioritizes dignity and safety. After a complaint was formally raised and the incidents corroborated by eyewitnesses, the leadership moved promptly. The platform wants to distance itself from any behaviour that normalises workplace misconduct. The interviews are being held solely with Mona.”

‘I am guilty as charged. I have said it’
Breaking his silence on the entire matter, Ram says, “Let me start by saying that everything I’ve been accused of saying, I have said it. So, the fact is that I am guilty as charged. But this is what I have to say in my defence. Whenever I’m with people I am comfortable with, I tend to become my bindass self. Everyone who knows me and who has worked with me knows that is how I am and that I don’t mean to be offensive.”

Ram also claimed that he was unaware of the discomfort he may have caused the show’s team during the event. “I didn’t feel that even once throughout the day. We were laughing and joking. If I had gotten the whiff that they were offended, I would have dealt with it right away,” he adds.
‘Why would I make those comments openly if I felt they were offensive?’

Elaborating on what transpired during the media interaction, Ram explains, “I commented on the dress a girl was wearing, and said it was a distraction. I did say it. But please understand, before that comment, I also told some men who were standing in the way to move because they were in the way of my line of vision (in the direction I was supposed to look and talk). If I felt it was inappropriate, why would I say it openly in a hall full of media people? My character has been questioned for the first time in 25 years, so do acknowledge my justification.”

I’m going to find a way to apologize to each of those team members who were offended’
Having worked across film, television, and digital platforms, Ram reflects on the need to evolve with changing times. “Now, I am aware of a few things which I wasn’t that day. I cannot be my obnoxious normal self,” he says, adding, “The comments I made came from a harmless space, but the bottom line is that those team members, who are half my age, did get offended, and that’s not acceptable. Not only my fans, I have my son who looks up to me and learns from me. I want to tell everyone that please don’t doubt me. It doesn’t matter what I think or what the media thinks is right or wrong, but the OTT platform thought that certain things were wrong, and that is justified from their point of view. I do not blame them for taking this stance, because yes, it will teach me a lesson. I respect their decision, and I am going to find a way to apologize to each of those team members who were offended that day on a personal level.”

There are a lot of fat people who are healthier than thin people-Ram Kapoor

Yashika Mathur (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 7, 2025)

Actor Ram Kapoor surprised his fans in December 2024, when he shared his drastic physical transformation by losing 55 kilos. On Worth Health Day today, the actor emphasises that people should quit their obsession with “just losing weight” and focus on improving overall health for long-term results.

The 51-year-old actor tells us, “I had become an ambassador for ill health, which I did not have a problem with because I was doing well (professionally). However, I have a personal life, too, and I cannot promote being unhealthy to my (two) children who look up to me. So, I decided to set a goal.”

Ram set a target of one year to achieve his fitness goals. Ask about his biggest challenge and he says, “Nothing. This is my best achievement, and I’m going to continue this till the end of my life. It’s so much fun, where is the toughness?”

The actor also questions people’s obsession with just losing weight: “The problem is that everybody targets only weight loss. That’s what I also did. During the past five years, I lost 30 kg twice because I targeted weight loss, but that will eventually fail. Why do you want to lose weight? Just to become thin? Becoming thin doesn’t mean you’re healthy. There are a lot of fat people who are healthier than thin people. So, this time around, I changed my mindset, and decided to be the healthiest version of myself.”

Talking about changing one’s mindset, he shares, “I did a lot of research, and it took me six months to change myself mentally to commit to becoming healthy and fit. You have to forget about weight loss and focus on being healthy.”

Ram signs off with a thought-provoking statement: “Do you want to be on a wheelchair, dependent on somebody else, during the last 15 years of your life? If you do, then don’t worry about health. But if you want to be on your feet and self-reliant for the last 15 years of your life, you have to become fit and healthy.”

Believe it or not, I lost weight the old fashioned way-Ram Kapoor

Ram Kapoor talks about losing 55 kgs and why this transformation is deeply personal
Neha Maheshwri (BOMBAY TIMES; December 30, 2024)

Ram Kapoor is making headlines with his impressive weight loss journey, having dropped 55 kgs over the past 18 months. However, he emphasises that the transformation wasn’t motivated by his career. He shares, “I’ve been incredibly fortunate that audiences loved me even when I was overweight and didn’t fit the industry’s typical mould. At my heaviest, I was 140 kgs while working on Neeyat and Jubilee. Those roles suited my size, but I was unhealthy. I’d feel breathless after walking just 20 steps. I was diabetic, had a foot injury and struggled even with basic movement. It was then that I realised I couldn’t go on like this.”

Turning 50 was a wake-up call for the Bade Achhe Lagte Hain actor. He says, “I have two children, and I felt the need to set a positive example for them by prioritising my own health. Over the last six months, I pushed myself to shed 55 kgs, bringing me down to 85 kgs. The transformation is deeply personal.”

‘Believe it or not, I lost weight the old-fashioned way’
Transformations like these often spark speculation about surgeries and weight-loss drugs. Ram says, “Believe it or not, I did it the old-fashioned way, by changing my mindset, lifestyle and habits, without any surgery or external aids. That said, there’s nothing wrong with medical options if they help someone. For me, it was about a complete mental and physical reset.”

‘Fitness isn’t about the number on the scale; it’s about feeling healthy’
Losing weight in your 50s is no easy feat, especially with challenges like slower metabolism, increased fat storage and reduced muscle mass. Opening up about how the actor overcame these hurdles, he says, “It’s definitely harder. I realized this had to be a lifelong change, not a temporary fix. It’s not about following a diet for a few months; it’s about changing who you are as a person. I’d lost 30 kilos twice in the past, only to gain it all back. This time, I didn’t focus on quick results or just willpower. Instead, I focused on fitness, what I eat, how much I sleep, my exercise routine, hydration and fasting intervals. Fitness isn’t about the number on the scale; it’s about feeling strong, energetic and healthy. Staying fit is a constant work in progress, and one’s life revolves around continuous improvement.”

‘If you are not fit, you will end up relying on others’
He credits his success to working on his mental health first. He says, “Think about the last 15 years of your life. Do you want to be self-reliant or dependent on others? If you are not fit, you will end up relying on others. I was unhappy with who I had become. When you’re emotionally at rock bottom, change becomes possible. I hit that point — I was angry and disappointed with myself. That’s when I decided to stop making excuses and start rebuilding.”

He adds, “Today I feel like my 25-year-old self again, physically, mentally and emotionally. I can walk for 12 hours without stopping. It’s a complete turnaround from where I was.”

‘I know the roles will evolve in alignment with my transformation’
Over the years, Ram, known for his acting chops, has seamlessly transitioned from television to films and web series. He now looks forward to roles that align with his transformed self. He shares, “Some director friends warned me, saying I was taking a risk because my identity as the ‘big guy’ was so well-established. I understood their concerns, but this journey was never about my career — it was about me and my children.”

He adds, “I’m grateful for a thriving 25-year career, but there comes a time when you have to prioritize yourself. That said, I know the roles will evolve. In fact, early next year, you’ll see me in a web series playing a much younger lead character. I have embraced the new me wholeheartedly.”

‘My family realizes the depth of my change, which goes far beyond the physical transformation’
Ask him about the response from his family to the new him and he replies, “My family understands the depth of my change, which extends beyond the physical transformation that most people notice first. While others focus on the visual shock of my weight loss, my family understands it’s a much deeper and personal journey. They witnessed my repeated attempts at weight loss, where I would try and fail, again and again. But this time, they’ve seen a fundamental shift in who I am as a person and redefined myself entirely.”

Finally, my dream to own a second home near Mumbai has come true-Ram Kapoor

Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; December 5, 2021)

While Alibaug has always been favoured by Mumbaikars for short holidays, in the last two years, due to the pandemic, it became one of the preferred destinations for a quick getaway from the city to soak in the sun and sand. Recently, actor-couple Ram Kapoor and his wife Gautami bought a sprawling holiday home in Alibaug. Ram says that the pandemic was not the reason to invest in a property at the lovely locale.

He shares, “I have holiday homes in Goa and Khandala, so there was no reason to find one more. But, since 2017, I was looking for a property, which would be an extension of my home in South Mumbai, and now, given the quick access to Alibaug, I thought it would be a good idea to buy this home. The plan was to find a place that wouldn’t be too far where I could relax on weekends with my family. Goa and Khandala are great, but they are not close to home. It was a dream to buy a home where I can see my grandchildren enjoy their time.”

He further added, “Alibaug has developed a lot in the past two years. Today, you find the best eateries, good services and facilities there, so I found it a convenient option. Finally, my dream to own a second home near Mumbai has come true.”

Ask Ram if he plans to ring in the New Year at his new home and he says, “No, I had booked a holiday to the Maldives before I bought this property, so I am spending my New Year there. But, my wife and kids are looking forward to spending their weekends in Alibaug now. I plan to go there every Thursday evening and come back on Sunday.”

From a rocky relationship, my father and I went on to become best buddies-Ram Kapoor

The actor talks about his equation and love for his father, adman Anil Kapoor, who passed away recently
Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; April 17, 2021)

Actor Ram Kapoor’s father, Anil Kapoor, one of the doyens of the Indian advertising industry passed away in Mumbai on April 12. Ram, who has never spoken about his legendary father in his entire career span, shares in an exclusive interview the reason why his father and he kept their professional lives separate, how he never used his father’s name to further his career and the time they spent together in his last few days. Excerpts…

Your father had been unwell and undergoing treatment in Singapore…
My father was detected with cancer 10 years ago and the doctors then said that he had around 6-12 months left. We started his treatment and miraculously he recovered, stunning the doctors. He lived a pain-free life for 10 years, travelled around the world, worked well and was fine. But last year around February, he travelled with his friends to Singapore and that’s when the cancer came back and his situation deteriorated. He also got stuck there because of the lockdown that followed in March. A few months ago, he called and told me that he wanted to return to India. It was challenging amidst COVID-19 restrictions, but we managed to get an air ambulance. He was admitted to a Mumbai hospital, where visitors were not allowed due to Coronavirus. But with precautions and permission, I stayed with him during his last few days in the hospital. My family was worried about how I was managing, but for me, it was a great sense of satisfaction and peace that I was around him.

While your father was one of the advertising industry veterans, you chose to become an actor. Why did you not want to use his name to get work?
I learnt a lot about theatre at Sherwood boarding school in Nainital. So when I told my father about my decision to pursue acting as a career, he did not take me seriously. He did not discourage me either and just told me to follow my dreams. Also, when I went abroad to learn acting, he thought I wasn’t serious and I would quietly come back and do something else after the initial struggle. So, it was a challenge within myself to prove to him that I would create my path and make him proud, one day. I wanted to prove to him that I could make my career without his help and support. I was highly inspired by Nicolas Cage, a Hollywood star who is also the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola, but he never took the surname and created his own identity.

So, what was wrong in using your father’s name or his connections?
I don’t see anything wrong in fathers or mothers helping their kids in showbiz, but in my case, the reason why I never used his name was that his respect and confidence in me mattered to me the most. He was a self-made man and a true legend, and I wanted to prove to him that I could also be a self-made man like him. Today, I feel happy that I may not be a Khan, but I have carved a place for myself in the profession. People take my name with respect and though I am nowhere near my legendary father, my work and career has reached a stage, where people started identifying my father as Ram Kapoor’s father. It took me 10 years to impress him, and from a rocky relationship that I shared with him during those initial years, we went on to become great buddies. He used to proudly tell people how I was his best friend.

You mentioned how you bonded with him in the last few years…
Both he and I had busy careers and it was challenging to be physically present and share common things. But, we bonded a lot over phone calls and long conversations, which lasted for 2-3 hours. We used to fight, argue and have the best advice for each other. It is because we kept our work lives separate and were self-reliant, we became such a close father-son duo. In many ways, I am similar to my dad and that’s why I am what I am, today. And though I was aware of how he turned around a dying ad agency to one of the top five agencies in the country and his achievements, I always detached from his profession. Similarly, he must have watched all my films, my TV shows and series, but he never once complimented me on my work. Through my wife, mother or sister, he would convey that he was very happy with my achievements. He had a lot of expectations from me and I am happy I fulfilled them. In his last days, we discussed death, not in a morbid way but as a matter of fact. Even now, there are times when I wake up crying and miss him a lot, but in my heart, I know that I have healed, and feel a sense of satisfaction, I could give him a send-off, like the way he wanted.

This comfort factor Sakshi Tanwar and I share is important-Ram Kapoor

Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar in Karrle Tu Bhi Mohabbat
Television’s favourite couple Ram Kapoor, Sakshi Tanwar reunite after years in this interview and a forthcoming web series
Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; April 8, 2017)

Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar make for an endearing on-screen couple. Given their disparate personalities, this depiction seems fitting. Ram is outgoing, Sakshi is self-effacing. Yet, they get along, and look forward to collaborating. After their small screen outing, Ekta Kapoor’s Bade Acche Lagte Hain (2011), enjoyed a successful three-year run, the duo is teaming up for the second time for a web series titled Karrle Tu Bhi Mohabbat, also being helmed by Ekta under her digital production house, ALT Balaji.

A digital outing is a first for both the actors, and Ram acknowledges that it is indeed the future of entertainment. “We are considered older actors, so it’s exciting to be part of this new world, which is relevant and happening. Fortunately, there isn’t the constant pressure of meeting deadlines, like [is] in a daily show. [Shooting for the digital platform] is akin to shooting for a film.”

The web show, which airs on April 16, informs Ram, is a story that depicts that love can be found at any age and in unexpected places. The actor slips into the role of a fading superstar, who visits a counselor (Sakshi) to help him come to terms with his relationship issues, only to end up falling for her.

The camaraderie they share isn’t restricted for reel alone. Sakshi admits, despite their previous outing having culminated three years ago, the memories are still fresh. “It was like we were shooting for the show yesterday. And now, we begin again.” Ram chips in, “There is this comfort factor [we share]. For me, this is important.”

Sakshi, who was last seen in the Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal (2016), seconds this opinion, and is quick to point out that she is selective with her projects. “But this [doing the web show] was the quickest decision I took. It is nice to have Ram [participate] in my acting journey.” That this was being helmed by Ekta, who made them stars of television with serials like Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (2000, featuring Sakshi) and Kasamh Se (2006, starring Ram), was another deciding factor.

Ram and Sakshi recently wrapped up shooting for the 14-episode series, and are already looking forward to the next season. Exploring web entertainment is a natural move for the two, given that they say they cannot relate what’s being aired on TV and ruling TRP. “I can’t see myself being part of a show about nagins,” says Ram, who is now busy shooting for Yash Raj FIlms’ next project, directed by Habib Faisal. Meanwhile, Sakshi says she will only return to TV for a finite series.

After seeing me in drag, the audience is prepared for anything-Ram Kapoor

Ram Kapoor insists that Humshakals did wonders for him and promises that his upcoming film with Sunny Leone, Kuch Kuch Locha Hai, is not a sleaze fest
Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 7, 2015)

Your TV show, Bade Acche Lagte Hain, made you a 'family' hero. Your upcoming film with Sunny Leone, Kuch Kuch Locha Hai, could make you an 'adult' star?
I agreed to do this film almost three years ago after director Devang Dholakia's script made me laugh. But I couldn't do it then as I was committed to the TV show and Humshakals. I'm not Salman or a Shah Rukh Khan, but they waited for me. I knew all along that it's a Sunny Leone film and I understand that she has a certain image but that didn't make me apprehensive because it's not a sex-comedy or a sleaze-fest. If it was I'd never have done it.

But after Humshakals' debacle, surely you'd think twice about risking another risque comedy?
Humshakals has done wonders for me. After seeing me in drag, the audience is prepared for anything which isn't bad. On TV I've been playing the same kind of character for years. Udaan gave me a bigger platform but the roles didn't get any different. I've always wanted to do a masala entertainer that'd break the stereotype, announce that I was available for commercial cinema and not just for festival films. Humshakals opened unexpected doors for me.

And now you're open to an out-and-out sex-comedy?
Before becoming an actor, I made a pact with my parents. I'll never break it. I promised them that I'd never do a film that would embarrass or shame them, a film we can't all watch together. Kuch Kuch Locha Hai may have Sunny, but you can watch it with your parents and in-laws.

Buzz is, you're embarrassed about your weight and on the sets of the soap, Dil Ki Baatein Dil Hi Jaane, you insist on close-ups and long shots. Mid-shots are done by your double.
Not at all. I've recently lost 8 kgs due thanks to my erratic diet that comes from work and travelling. Mahesh Bhatt, the soap's producer, has said my weight isn't a restriction.

One health tip...
Giving up smoking. I used to smoke over 50 cigarettes a day until 2013, but stopped thanks to my six-yearold daughter who saw an anti-smoking ad and asked me if I was going to die. I told her not everyone who smokes, dies. A week later, I was travelling and she called me again sounding worried. Tearyeyed, I promised her I'd quit. In a week's time, before my son's birthday in January, I went off cigarettes. Once you have a daughter, you can't take any decisions on your own. She decides, you comply. I haven't had a single drag since.

My wife and kids are excited to see me as a woman in Humshakals-Ram Kapoor

Hiren Kotwani (BOMBAY TIMES; June 18, 2014)

Best known for the lead roles he played in telly soaps, Ram Kapoor ventured into Bollywood with character roles in films like Karthik Calling Karthik, Agent Vinod and Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, among others. In Sajid Khan's upcoming comedy Humshakals, he plays three characters, all called Mamaji. Excerpts from a conversation...

Sajid and you have been friends for years. Why did it take you so long to collaborate?
I know a lot of people in Bollywood, but it's not in me to tell a friend that I want to work with him. Sajid did well in his career, while I progressed in mine. When I was doing TV, maybe he didn't think I was a good option. Once, after I had acted in a couple of movies, he said we must work together. At that time, I didn't know what he had in mind for me. When he approached me with Humshakals a few months later, I said, `Fantastic. Let's do it'.

Being a big TV star, what prompted you to start with supporting roles in films?
While it's true that I've done well in TV , it took me more than 10 years to get there. Films are a different ball game altogether. I had decided that I would do whatever it takes to enter movies, but slowly . Be it Agent Vinod or EMAET, they were baby steps for me. Due to my size, I fit into character roles. I'm aware of my advantages and disadvantages and discussed this with Sajid too. Boman Irani is one actor I look up to and I think I can have a similar career graph. I've a plan in process and I'm moving from one step to the next.

What was your first thought on hearing that you have to dress up as a woman?
I was nervous as to whether I'd be able to pull it off. Doing a hit show on TV means doing the same thing for three-four years. When I decided to venture into films, I wanted to try and do things as differently as possible. So, I took Humshakals as a challenge. On TV , I'd have never got an opportunity like this.
In movies, I want people to see all sides of me as an actor.

What happened the first time you stepped out in your female avatar?
That was in Mauritius. Kareena (Kapoor Khan) and Genelia (D'Souza Deshmukh) were also there. Tamannaah and Bipasha gave me a hug, saying they found me too cute. If the audience reacts the way people on the set did, I'll be happy.

While Saif (Ali Khan) and Riteish (Deshmukh) are chasing each other's female avatars in a song, you're chasing your own. Was that intentional?
That was Sajid's idea. He thought it would be funny if Ram is chasing Ram. Shooting that portion took us four days and it was extremely tough. I had to alternate between both the looks to complete the shoot.

You've worked with Saif briefly in Agent Vinod. Since you have a lot more scenes with him, how was it different this time?
Saif is a thorough gentleman. I got to know him better now as we spent more time working and chilling out together. He's got a wacky sense of humour.

What about Riteish?
He is a fantastic person and a great guy to work with. He gets along with everyone.

What did your wife Gautami have to say about your 'woman' avatar?
After seeing the promo, she laughed non stop for 10 minutes. I've never seen her laugh so much. She got our kids to see it and they too had a good laugh. They're all excited to see the film, particularly me as a woman.

What's next in movies? Aren't you apprehensive this may typecast you in comedies?
Since I've been trying to do different roles, I don't think I'd be slotted. I've signed three movies, one of which is Patel Rap with Sunny Leone. It's a hilarious comedy in which my character, a Gujarati man named Patel, is secretly obsessed with Sunny. As for the other two films, let's wait for the producers to make the announcement.

What about Bade Acche Lagte Hain?
I had signed it for three years. After that, I informed the producers and the channel that I won't be able to continue.

Actors have gained and lost weight for roles. For which directors and what kind of roles would you consider losing a few kilos?
I'd do it for any director as long as the film and the role is worth the effort. It takes time to lose weight, and currently, I'm committed to movies, which came my way due to my size. So for the next six-eight months, I have to look like this. If something comes up later, I'd have to take a break to lose weight and not take up anything else till that assignment is complete.

Is it goodbye to TV then?
I'll never turn my back on TV, because it made me a household name. If something good comes up, I'll definitely consider. Otherwise, I'm totally focused on movies.

SAJID KHAN ON RAM KAPOOR
“Ram was initially shy after dressing up as a woman. We had to shoot on a beach and he was very hesitant. But when he saw people laughing, he felt it was working. He then started interacting with people to shed his inhibitions.“

Humshakals, produced by Vashu Bhagnani and presented by Fox Star Studios, releases June 20.

All the women who say size doesn't matter are lying-Ram Kapoor

Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; June 10, 2014)

Enlarge ImageIn his serials, Ram Kapoor always comes across as loving, caring, mature and a somewhat serious guy. Women of all ages adore him. But few know that he has a funny side. Add to it, his self-deprecating humour and the entire package is a winner. I decided to pose a bunch of really inane questions to him. Wary of his reaction, I warn him before I start. But he assures me, “Ask me anything”. He had me cracking up soon with his funny rejoinders. The actor, who is all set to showcase his funnier side in Humshakals, gets candid about everything from ‘size to sex’. Here’s presenting Ram Kapoor like never before...

Is Ram Kapoor better at drama or comedy?
I am more comfortable with drama. Comedy is still a little new to me, but I enjoy doing it. I have done a lot more drama and in TV, I am known for drama. I have a lot more practice at it. Also, it is easier than comedy. It is very hard to make someone laugh. However, I love taking on challenges, but let’s see how the outcome is. I will let the audience decide what I am better at.

Are you funnier off screen or onscreen?
Off screen. I don’t think the real humour of Ram Kapoor will be shown in any movie or serial because it is a little too in-your-face and below-the-belt. Only my close friends and family get to see that sense of humour. I don’t think the audience is ready for it yet (grins).

Three things Ram Kapoor has that Ranbir Kapoor doesn’t?
(Thinks) I can only think of one thing that Ranbir doesn’t have and that is my lovely cute paunch!

You moved from small screen to big screen because...
I am getting a lot of variety on the big screen. On the small screen I got stuck with doing the same role for three-four years and there was nothing I could do about it. If your show is a hit, then it runs for a long time and you end up playing the same character. To keep growing as an artiste, you have to keep challenging yourself and do different things. That’s what films are offering me.

What would you pick between spending one hour at the gym everyday and shopping with your wife for one hour everyday?
I love going shopping with my wife and pampering her. I am a patient shopper. I go wherever she wants to go and quietly give suggestions.

Enlarge ImageEnlarge ImageWhat if one morning you wake up and find yourself lean?
I will go back to sleep!

What will happen if you were caught in a city with only vegetarian food?
I will leave that city.

What will you say to someone who offered you an item song?
I will gladly do it. Me doing an item song will be hilarious. I love doing anything that the audience is not expecting and shocking them.

A vegetable you most resemble?
Potato.

An animal you most resemble?
Hippopotamus.

Actors get themselves six-pack-abs because...
a) They can’t act....
b) To impress the leading ladies...
c) Role demands it...
Some actors get six-pack-abs because the role demands it and some because the industry expects it. I won’t say impressing the leading ladies because there are many other ways to do that.

Given a chance, will you be a part of Bigg Boss?
Never say never in life, but I think it is next to impossible.

A lot of fruits, cold cuts, sausages, salami, children’s stuff, eggs and vegetables.

Who was your first crush?
It was the principal’s daughter in Sherwood college at Nainital.

Which features of yours are you self-conscious about?
I am not self-conscious about anything. If I am self-conscious either about my weight or about my looks I will not be able to perform as comfortably as I do. It is very important for actors to know and accept themselves for the good or bad, only they can act with ease.

What is the first physical feature you look for in someone you are attracted to?
Eyes.

I try to fit in a trip even if it’s only four to five days between my shooting schedules.

What is the longest time you have gone without a bath?
In boarding school I went without bath for a week. Everybody who’s been in a boarding school does everything to evade a bath. Being in a cold place like Nainital, we would all try to escape bath for weeks till we absolutely had to, especially during the winters.

Responsibility, but I wouldn’t say it’s the worst thing. On the other hand, I would say not having any responsibilty at all is the best thing about being a child.

If your significant other said it’s okay, would you cheat on her?
No. Because that phase has passed. I have done so much of all that nonsense before marriage that I feel I got married at the perfect time to the perfect girl. It’s when things don’t happen in a timely fashion these thoughts come to your mind. I really partied hard and was a bit of a casanova. I have never hidden it either from my parents or my wife.
