When Dhaakad Beera makers approached me, I asked if they were sure they had called the right person-Rakshanda Khan

Hasti Doshi (BOMBAY TIMES; October 18, 2025)

Rakshanda Khan, known for her roles in television hits like Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, Kasamh Se and Naagin, has often portrayed sophisticated, urban characters. In her latest project Dhaakad Beera, she steps away from that familiar image to play a character rooted in a rural setting.

She says, “My character Mallika in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin was quite glamorous. Tanya in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi was an America-returned woman. Most of my roles have been urban with an element of glamour. Even in Naagin, Sumitra was a housewife who later turned into a naagin — there was always some drama and style involved. But now I’m playing something very different. Dhaakad Beera is set in a village.”

On why she took up the role, she adds, “This was the first time I was offered a character without any glamour, and the makers were clear about that. When they approached me, I even asked if they were sure they had called the right person — I thought it was a mistake. But they wanted to test me for the role. I went for the narration, and the part was well written. She’s one of the main characters in the show. Initially, I wasn’t sure, but it’s worked out well.”

Looking back on her career of over two decades, Rakshanda says she never planned to become an actor. “I didn’t set out to act, and I didn’t have any other plans either. Modelling and acting just happened, and I went along with it. Even now, I tend to go with the flow. The things I say no to often end up happening anyway,” she says.

When I was in my 20s, some photographers had told me, ‘Ek kaam karo nose ki surgery karva lo’-Rakshanda Khan

In this day and age, when everyone is obsessed with looking younger, Rakshanda Khan believes in ageing gracefully. The actress, who will be seen in Tere Bina Jiya Jaye Na (TBJJN), says that there was a time when she had contemplated ‘fixing’ her nose, but decided otherwise. She says, “My nose has bothered me for years from the time I started modelling. I had a fall when I was two and that disturbed the balance of my nose. When I was in my 20s, some photographers had told me, ‘Ek kaam karo nose ki surgery karva lo bada achha career hoga.’ I considered it very strongly, but I realised that it would be too much of a trouble to go through. Kaun surgery karvaayega, do hafte plastic laga kar naak par baithega. It was easier for me to start liking my nose! Eventually, I came to a point where I made peace with it.”

She adds, “If I could look a certain way till I die, then God would not have allowed me to age... I would have just been frozen in time. Also, if I constantly hold onto my 20-year-old image then I am not being grateful for what I have. I understand people who go in for it because they are a part of the glamour industry, but glamour doesn’t mean that you sell a dream of beauty that is unattainable.”

Rakshanda says, “Fairness creams, anti-ageing creams, lifting creams and fillers, theek hai bhai lekin harr cheez agar aap ek limit mein karte ho. There could be things that genuinely bother you, but you have to draw the line somewhere. If I am only putting up pictures with a filter, it means I don’t want anyone to know my real face and if I don’t like my real face, how will someone else? I cannot expect to be loved if I dislike my own self. If I am not comfortable in my own skin, then it’s going to be a mess living with me.”

Emphasising the need to focus on fitness, one’s happiness and mental health, she says, “Mental health will sort out everything for an individual, while looks will only keep a part of the person happy. If I am mentally stable and happy, I will be able to keep everyone around me happy. Fitness is of paramount importance; one needs to follow a fitness regimen to be able to stay fit, and not to have six-packs. I want my child to know that fitness is important because of health and not because of looks.”

On the work front, the actress, who has played many negative characters, will be seen in a positive role in TBJJN. She says, “Negative characters are fun because you get to play so much with them. But you can get typecast and that’s a slight drawback of this medium. I would rather play realistic characters because, let’s face it, no one is completely negative or positive. For a change, my character in TBJJN is a positive mother. She isn’t the biological mother. But at the same time, she isn’t your constant melting mom who will break into tears at the drop of a hat. She is a principled and morally correct woman.”
