Priyanka Chopra Jonas says that she is happy to be married to someone who has the ‘ability to calm’ her
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 31, 2019)

If there’s one Bollywood celebrity who has truly showed the world what talent Indian actors possess, it has to be Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Be it Hindi films, Hollywood projects or her singing career, she has managed to strike that perfect balance. But this has obviously made her life hectic.

Ask Priyanka how tough managing everything along with her personal life gets, and she exclaims, “It’s tough, but I’m glad I’m married to someone who understands my ambition and drive,” referring to her husband, singer Nick Jonas. The couple got married on December 1 last year. Priyanka continues, “He says this is why he fell in love with me. For both of us, our professional lives are very, very important. We both come from a non-entitled background; our careers were not given to us. We both have worked hard to be where we are, and have had a two-decade long career each. We know what it takes to do what we do, and support each other.”

For a couple, spending time with each other is integral to the relationship, more so when the people belong to two different parts of the world. How are Nick and Priyanka managing so far? “We have a rule,” Priyanka spills the beans, “Nick and I don’t go beyond two-three weeks without seeing each other. Wherever in the world we are, we keep in touch, and video call all the time! It’s important to make the effort to have the other person involved in your life. We do that.”

The actor asserts that “having a work life-personal life balance is very important” for both men and women. “You see more and more working couples today. We put too much pressure on ourselves and our relationships. (People tend to think) ‘It won’t work out if I take on too much work’ — and that’s unfair. It will work out if you want to make it work.”

The 37-year old has her hands full currently. Priyanka will be seen next with Rajkummar Rao in the adaptation of the novel The White Tiger, and We Can Be Heroes. She was also seen recently in the critically-acclaimed The Sky Is Pink with Farhan Akhtar, a Bollywood film she did after a gap of three years. People called it her ‘comeback’. Ask Priyanka whether it bothers her that her Hindi projects are called a ‘comeback’ just because she was busy with other projects, and she says, “I don’t care what people say. ‘Comeback’ ‘Go back’ ‘Here’ ‘There ’, people’s opinions don’t matter. I don’t even think about that. To some people it might be a ‘comeback’, to some it might not!”

Clearly, nothing bothers Priyanka. So, then how’s married life treating her? Her face lights up as she says, “Damn, it’s the best thing that has ever happened to me! We complete a year this December. I wish I knew it was so amazing, I would have done it before (laughs). It’s great to be married to someone who’s my rock, and has the ability to calm me. It’s given me wings in such a beautiful way!”

The entire country emulates Salman Khan and everyone wants to wear what he wears on Eid-Ashley Rebello

As told to Nishi Tiwari (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 26, 2019)

My first film with Salman Khan was Wanted (2008). Many tell me that I am his lucky mascot, I don’t know if that’s true, but Wanted changed the course of Salman’s career.

I’ve always believed that dressing him up is more about dressing up a personality... a star... rather than just an individual. The entire country emulates him and everyone wants to wear what he wears on Eid. So, you have to be more conscious as a stylist.

I remember making a floral, printed pathani kurta which he wore on Bigg Boss. Soon after, I went to a wedding and saw many guys wearing similar kurtas. Salman loves wearing pathanis, and looks so good in them. This year, on Eid, he wore a pathani kurta which I had picked up from a local market in Dubai. It has typical Afghan embroidery which looks a lot like Indian phulkari.

Another time on the reality show, we got a jacket by a designer called Asa and put a pair of love birds on the back. The jacket made another appearance during the screening of Bharat earlier this year, when he paired it with a pair of jeans he’d got from the US. The zip detail at the hem was added by us. While buying denims, the most important thing is the fit and Salman can just look at a pair and tell how it will fit. I am always on the lookout for young, trendy designers in India and abroad for him. Salman likes jeans by particular brands and jackets in classic leather styles. He has so many of them that there is no place in his wardrobe anymore, even though he gives a lot of them away. I recently worked with him on Bharat, which was challenging. I had done a few period films before, but not on such a massive scale be it the detailing of 1947, right from the badges, hats and shoes to the fabrics used in that period. As an actor, if Salman sees something that catches the eye, he keeps it in mind. Once, he told me that his ex-secretary used to hang his glasses on the back of his shirt. It would irritate him at the time and he would tell him, “Why do you do that? It looks stupid!” But he incorporated that quirk in Dabangg’s Chulbul Pandey and made it iconic.

Now, that he is 53 and not 23, I try to keep his fashion style a little more mature. So, for formal occasions, I give him a suit and it really looks good on him. Ditto for weddings. The suit he wore for Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s wedding reception earlier this year was an in-house creation. We pick up fabric, mostly Italian, from abroad for these suits.

Jodhpur shaadi and three receptions across India done, PC-Nick to host yet another bash in LA for Hollywood folk

Dwayne JohnsonLesser mortals may be suffering from wedding fatigue after the back-to-back shaadis of Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh, and Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas. But there's some more revelry to be served up on the Chopra-Jonas front.

The couple, who tied the knot in Jodhpur's iconic Umaid Bhawan Palace on December 1, followed it with a reception in the capital on December 4 that saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance.

The wedding caravan rolled into Mumbai this week, with two receptions held on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. Now, we hear, the duo is set to host another gala in Los Angeles for their friends in Hollywood.

Kerry WashingtonA source reveals that the bash is likely to take place in the last week of January. "After their honeymoon in Switzerland, Priyanka will fly down to Mumbai for a schedule of The Sky Is Pink. She will join Nick in LA towards the month-end, to host a reception for their friends. Her team is currently doing a recce in Malibu and will soon finalise a venue.

It will be a black-tie event, with Priyanka's close friends Kerry Washington (left), Dwayne Johnson (top; right), Ellen DeGeneres (below), and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, on the guest list. Many other Hollywood stars, including her co-stars from A Kid Like Jake and Isn't It Romantic?, and Nick's friends from the music fraternity are also expected. Besides her family, Priyanka's cousin Parineeti Chopra is also likely to fly down for the soiree."

Bollywood welcomes Desi Girl Priyanka Chopra and her videsi husband Nick Jonas

Ex-colleagues, constant collaborators, friends and family were in attendance at the Nickyanka reception
MUMBAI MIRROR (December 22, 2018)

It was Thursday night fever as Bollywood A-listers gathered at a Bandra five-star to welcome home their Desi Girl and embrace her videsi better half. Priyanka Chopra excitedly introduced husband Nick Jonas to the film frat. The American singer looked a little lost at times, particularly on the dance floor amidst all the jhatkas and matkas, but hung around sportingly, giving his bride the occasional jhappis.

One of the first guests to catch the paparazzi eye was the Mozart of Madras, A R Rahman, accompanied by wife Saira. Reportedly, they arrived a few minutes before the bride and groom, wished the couple and left just as quickly. Also among the early birds was Salman Khan, putting reports that he is miffed with the actress to rest. Priyanka had dropped out of the actor’s home production Bharat just days before it was to roll, in the ‘nick of time’ as director Ali Abbas Zafar put it. Salman arrived, mingled, chatted with Simi Garewal and exited with the minimum of fuss and drama. Neither of his brothers, Arbaaz and Sohail, were around but brother-in-law Aayush Sharma was there and after the party, Nick and Priyanka, along with his longtime friend, Nikhil Dwivedi, made their way to the Khan residence well past 3 am. Guess all’s well on this front now. Katrina Kaif who replaced Priyanka in Bharat was there too, a picture of desi elegance in a sari and a cape. Like with the DeepVeer reception, she came alone and showed no signs of nerves despite a big release, Zero, coming up in a few hours as she blew kisses to the popping flashbulbs.

Talking of Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, the just-married couple was colour-coordinated and seemed delighted to reunite with their Bajirao Mastani co-star, Priyanka. The DJ who had started with peppy English tracks before switching to Bollywood hits on popular demand, was surprised when Bajirao joined him on the console and pushed his favourites. When “Pinga” started playing, Mastani and Kashibai quickly fell into step with the familiar tune with the latter showing off some new classical moves. Ranveer exuberantly danced around the ladies, before dragging Urmila Matondkar to the floor. The two grooved to “Rangeela Re”. Later he joined his wife, the groom, the bride and her cousin, Parineeti Chopra, to dance floor to shake a leg to “Galla Goodiyan”. Pari was with boyfriend Charit Desai. Nick and Priyanka danced to “Desi Girl”, while her mother, Madhu Chopra, joined Pari for a jig on “London Thumakda”.

According to a guest, the chemistry between the newlyweds was crackling but Nick, who was seen smoking a cigar, looked a little out of place at the boisterous Bollywood bash. “He was polite, and greeted guests warmly, obliging the ones who approached him for selfies, even if a trifle uncomfortably,” the source laughed.

In the last two-three years, Priyanka has hardly worked in Hindi films as she shuttled between India and the US, and it was heart-warming to see several filmmakers and colleagues she has worked with in the past, come together to celebrate her big day. Rekha and Hema Malini, Shabana Azmi, Asha Bhosle and Simi proved that old is gold. Besides the usually elusive Urmila, the rarely seen Sameera Reddy, Ayesha Takia and Madhoo were also there, along with Raveena Tandon and Poonam Dhillon, Bobby Deol and Vivek Oberoi, Govinda, Anil Kapoor and Anupam Kher. Jeetendra with son Tusshar and Sanjay Khan with wife Zareen, daughter Farah and son-in-law Aqeel Ali , Raj Babbar and Kabir Bedi were among the guests.

Saina Nehwal with husband and fellow shuttler Parupalli Kashyap courted a lot of attention as did new mom and another Olympian Sania Mirza who came with her sister. Geeta Basra was there, as also Anushka Sharma but minus their cricketer husbands, Habhajan Singh and Virat Kohli respectively. Politician Milind Deora, socialite Natasha Poonawaala, designers Masaba Gupta, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, along with Shane and Falguni Peacock, choreographers Bosco- Ceaser and Terrance Lewis made the gathering eclectic.

Karan Johar, keeping company with actress Kiara Advani, had heads turning while Subhash Ghai and Abbas-Mustan (Aitraaz), Vishal Bhardwaj (Kaminey and Saat Khoon Maaf), Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Ram-Leela and Bajirao Mastani), Anil Sharma (Hero: Love Story Of A Spy), Vipul Shah (Waqt: Race Against Time) and wife Shefali (Dil Dhadakne Do) Madhur Bhandarkar (Fashion) and Omung Kumar’s (Mary Kom) presence was expected. Siddharth Roy Kapur was accompanied by wife Vidya, Ronnie Screwvala and a colourful Zaira Wasim represented the team of her on-going production, The Sky Is Pink; Farhan Akhtar was missed.

Kabir Khan and Homi Adajania, Tanuj Garg and Atul Kasbekar, Puneet Malhotra, Sanjay Gupta and Vikramaditya Motwane, Anees Bazmee and Abhishek Kapoor, Shikha Kapur, Goldie Behl and Anurag Kashyap added to the list of filmmakers. There was Milan Luthria too who had a lot to say to Ahaan Shetty whom he is launching.

It was family time for ‘Queen’ Kangana Ranaut who was joined by sister Rangoli and their mother. Bhumi Pednekar was also accompanied by her sister who looks startling like her while Kajol amd Tanishaa dazzled together. Aditi Rao Hydari, Dia Mirza, Yami Gautam, Diana Penty, Tamannaah Bhatia made for some pretty pictures. The senior actors came and left early while the youngsters grooved till past 3 am. The dance floor was the big attraction as were the two bars on either side of the room. There was a room full of desserts and a Mughlai-Continental menu but that wasn’t the big draw.

Surprisingly, there weren’t too many young actors. No Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra or Vicky Kaushal. The exceptions were Rajkummar Rao with partner Patralekha, Neil Nitin Mukesh with brother Naman, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Kartik Aaryan. The Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety actor came alone but then didn’t leave Sara Ali Khan’s side while Ishaan Khatter who turned up as mamma’s boy but then found Janhvi Kapoor on the dance floor.

Two interesting guests were Shahid Kapoor with better half Mira Rajput… And lone ranger Harman Baweja. Priyanka introduced everyone to Nick but there are no signs of him biting the Bollywood bait. In fact, if the buzz is to be believed, the couple will take off to the US soon. Jimmy Fallon is waiting to get them on his show. The guests left with pictures of themselves clicked at the photo booth stationed near the venue entrance. A little memento from NickYanka’s East-meets-West bonding.

Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas' Mumbai reception to be on December 20

The actress, who is currently honeymooning in Oman, is also gearing up to resume shooting for Shonali Bose’s directorial next week in the city
Avinash Lohana and Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 11, 2018)

B-town’s favourite jodi Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s wedding celebrations, which started with an engagement dinner at a luxury resort at Lake Como, concluded on December 1 with a star-studded party in Mumbai after 15 days. It featured two weddings and three receptions. But even before one could heave a sigh of relief, American singer Nick Jonas landed with band, baaja, parivaar and baraat at Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhawan Palace on November 29 to tie the knot with actress Priyanka Chopra. The couple made a match of it with a white wedding on December 1, followed by the traditional pheras the next day and a reception in the capital on December 4, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The newly-weds have since taken off to the desert country of Oman for a honeymoon. End of the wedding story? Not yet. Mirror has learnt that one more celebration remains, a reception for industry friends on December 20 in Mumbai.

“Priyanka and Nick have zeroed in on a Bandra five-star and are in the final stages of discussion. Once the formalities are completed, they will start sending out the invites. They are looking forward to celebrating with friends in the city and are personally supervising the prep,” informed a source close to the development.

Meanwhile, Priyanka will get back to work after she returns from Oman later this week and resume shooting for Shonali Bose’s truelife story, the tentatively-titled The Sky Is Pink. She wrapped up the previous schedule days before her wedding celebrations kicked off on November 25. “A week-long schedule will begin in Mumbai from December 17 with Priyanka and Farhan (Akhtar) after which the team goes on a Christmas and New Year break,” informed a source.

After shoots in Delhi, London and Mumbai, the last schedule will be in the Andamans and the film is expected to wrap up by January-end for a mid-2019 release. Producers Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur recently brought the Golden Globenominated Ivanhoe Pictures (the banner behind Crazy Rich Asians) on board as the co-producer and co-investing partner.

The Sky Is Pink is inspired by young motivational speaker, Aisha Chaudhary, who was born with an immune deficiency disorder and was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis when she was 13. While Priyanka and Farhan play her parents, Zaira Wasim plays the young trooper.

DNA Exclusive: I broke into tears when I saw Priyanka as a bride-Madhu Chopra

Nayandeep Rakshit (DNA; December 7, 2018)

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ wedding last week was a perfect amalgamation of Indian and Western cultures, as they took their nuptial vows according to Christian rituals and Hindu customs.

For Madhu Chopra (PC’s mother), seeing her ‘little girl’ tying the knot was a dream come true. She tells us, “It was an emotional moment for everyone. I broke into tears when I saw Priyanka dressed as a bride. I had waited for this day all my life.” She was always keen that her daughter should have a proper Indian wedding. “We followed all the rituals to the T. There were no shortcuts. I wanted an Indian shaadi for her and Priyanka knew that. She fulfilled my wish. It’s lovely to see the amount of love people have for her and Nick,” she adds.

For the Catholic ceremony, the Quantico actress wore a gorgeous Ralph Lauren white gown with a 75-feet veil, while her husband opted for a black tuxedo. The doting mother exclaims, “I was at a loss of words. When I saw Priyanka, I couldn’t control my emotions. The white gown was so beautiful. My baby looked like a princess.”

The next day, PC opted for a heavily-embroidered red Sabyasachi lehenga choli. According to Madhu, “Priyanka looked ‘her prettiest best’ in the outfit.  There was no jhatak, no jhilmil — it was a simple yet classy ensemble.”

The doctor-turned-film producer was spotted grooving with her daughter on stage for the sangeet, too. “It was lovely. Sab dance kar rahe the sangeet pe and everyone was enjoying themselves. The entire atmosphere was vibrant and energetic,” she recalls.

Madhu is all praises for her beti, who has managed to bridge the gap between the East and West effortlessly. She states, “I’m immensely proud of her. It’s majorly because she has done so well for herself and still continues to be so rooted. Woh dekhke mujhe yehi laga ki chahein woh kitna bhi West mein rahe, she will always be connected to our culture.”

She also adds that all this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Priyanka’s in-laws. She smiles and says, “Nick’s family members are such lovely human beings. They were completely fine with the blend of the cultures and Nick is immensely respectful and well-spoken. He makes sure everyone around him comfortable. He’s the best son-in-law one could ask for.”

I don't want to give publicity to those fools-Madhu Chopra reacts to the article on The Cut

Priyanka Chopra's mother Madhu reacts to The Cut article: Don't want to give publicity to fools
Madhu Chopra on the now-deleted article that termed Priyanka Chopra 'a global scam artist'
Sonil Dedhia (MID-DAY; December 7, 2018)

Madhu ChopraA day after it was pulled off the site, the scathing article on Priyanka Chopra published by The Cut - an offshoot of The New York magazine - continues to dominate public conversation. Titled 'Is Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas' Love For Real?', the piece termed Chopra as a 'global scam artist who tricked a naive and young Jonas into a lifelong commitment'.

While Chopra's fans and peers unanimously slammed the vitriolic piece, mother Madhu Chopra opened up to mid-day about it. "It is a happy phase for our family, and we don't want to be disturbed by such idiotic things. I am happy that my daughter is married to someone she truly loves," said Chopra, who has returned to Mumbai along with the newly-weds after a week-long celebration. She added, "I don't want to give publicity to those fools. There are some donkeys who do anything they feel like, but their actions don't affect us."

When Priyanka was asked to comment on the article, at an event in the capital on Wednesday, she took the high road by stating that it was "not even in my stratosphere". Her brother-in-law Joe Jonas lent her support by describing the article as "disgusting". His girlfriend Sophie Turner too took to social media to write, "This is wildly inappropriate. Very disappointed that The Cut would give anyone a platform to spew such bull****. (sic)"

The Cut publishes ‘racist’ write-up about Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas; his kin fires up Twitterati

Subsequently magazine has withdrawn article and apologised
MUMBAI MIRROR (December 6, 2018)

A section of the New York Times Magazine, The Cut, purports to ‘showing the world what women are made of’. On Wednesday, the editors of The Cut got a good sense of what the Indian twitterati is made of after they ran a sexist and unsubstantiated hatchet job on Priyanka Chopra.

PeeCee legions of admirers flooded Twittter with complaints about the poorly reported piece that called the actress a “global scam artiste” and presented Nick Jonas as some sort of poor sod with no agency of his own, who had been hoodwinked into marriage with Priyanka against his will.

Actresses Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Swara Bhasker, and singer Sona Mohapatra, have all criticised Mariah Smith for “racist” article. “For a publication that ‘shows women what they are made of’, The Cut has a lot to answer for. The article on Priyanka was sexist, racist and disgusting. Also, it’s written by a woman which is so sad. It reeks of envy and bitterness. Mariah, shame on you,” Sonam tweeted.

Swara expressed her disappointment on the micro-blogging site, saying, “Depressed with the state of the world and current affairs? Here is some good old fashioned puerile filth published by The Cut to add some pointless venom to your day. Also, someone invite Mariah to an Indian wedding, might assuage some of her misguided angst! Yellow Journalism!”

In the article, Smith wrote Priyanka’s “indulgences and what she views as necessities speak volumes to her personality and what she’ll do, or think she needs to do, for her career…” She scammed the couple, who got married in Jodhpur last week, saying they had their high profile wedding just to make money. A “shocked” Vinta Nanda reacted to the write-up saying, ““What does the writer mean by saying that he is gotten married against his will to a fraudulent relationship? Does the writer not see in pictures that it was one of the most beautiful weddings ever?”

Sona found the article “deeply disgusting” and said that to “character assassinate a hardworking, driven, achiever like Priyanka Chopra in this warped, petty manner” and for The Cut to publish such a low-brow piece is the lowest of the lows.

Nick’s brother Joe also called it disgusting and tweeted that “The”Cut should be ashamed to have someone write such evil words. What Nick & Pri have is Beautiful Love. Thank u, Next.” His fiancée Sophie Turner echoed his sentiments, “This is wildly inappropriate and totally disgusting. Very disappointed that The Cut would give anyone a platform to spew such bullshit.”

The piece has since been withdrawn. The editor’s note stated, “Upon further editorial review, we found this story did not meet our standards. We’ve removed it and apologize.”

MUMBAI MIRROR (December 5, 2018)

Two days after tying the knot in Jodhpur, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas hosted a wedding reception at a Delhi five-star on Tuesday. A live band entertained the guests who started filing in around 8pm,” informs a source.

Nick and Priyanka arrived at 9 pm. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was among the guests, stayed on for a while after congratulating the couple. The spread featured welcome drinks, a variety of Indian starters and a cross-continental dinner menu.

Exclusive details from Priyanka Chopra - Nick Jonas' Hindu wedding: From Parineeti's joota chuppai fee to groom's speech

Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra
Nayandeep Rakshit (DNA; December 4, 2018)

Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra’s lavish wedding at the Umaid Bhawan Palace was a beautiful blend of Indian and Western culture. The couple had a Christian wedding on December 1 followed by a Hindu ceremony the next day.

On Sunday evening, as the regal baraat procession reached the Baradari Lawns, Priyanka’s mom, Madhu, performed an aarti to welcome the groom. The men among the baraatis were dressed in sherwanis and Rajasthani saafas, while women wore lehenga-cholis. Before the wedding, PC’s cousin, Parineeti, hid Nick’s shoes as per the joota chupai ceremony and demanded Rs 5 lakh to return the same.

A source says, “Both the families accepted and followed each other’s customs wholeheartedly. During the Hindu wedding, Priyanka’s younger sibling, Siddharth, explained every ritual and its significance to Nick’s family. Siddharth and Nick’s brothers — Kevin, Joe and Frankie — also had a fun-filled competition where they picked up the bride and groom to a certain height, right before the varmalas (garlands) were exchanged.”

Nick was quite intrigued with the Hindu rituals. “When he was told that the saat pheras imply a vow taken by the bride and groom to spend seven lifetimes together, the latter exclaimed, ‘We should take seven more’. Everyone cheered after he made this remark.” Right after the wedding celebrations wrapped up, the American singer-songwriter also took the mic to give a short speech about his beloved wife, which left the latter teary-eyed. “He vowed to stay true to his promise and take care of her forever. At the end, PC was quite overwhelmed with Nick’s sweet gesture,” adds the source. After the nuptials, the guests partied till late.

Yesterday, both the families left for Delhi where Nickyanka will have their first reception tonight. A Bollywood reception is also on the cards, but the newlyweds are yet to lock in on a date and venue.

MUMBAI MIRROR (December 4, 2018)

After a three-day wedding celebration at Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhawan Palace, Priyanka Chopra arrived in Delhi with husband Nick Jonas on Monday. Dressed in a bottle-green sari that she paired with gold-rimmed cat-eye sunglasses, the new bride rounded off the look with sindoor even as Nick held her close for a quick photo-op at the airport. Mirror had earlier reported (November 29) that the couple wil have a weddign reception in Delhi today, and had arrived a day early for prep. On December 5, PeeCee is scheduled to attend an event in the Capital.

The #Nickyanka wedding, as it is being referred to by netizens, was at the receiving end of backlash for the use of fireworks. On Monday, animal rights organisation PETA raised concerns about the use of a horse and elephant at the nuptials. “Dear Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. Elephants for weddings live in chains and horses are controlled with whips, spiked bits. People are rejecting elephant rides and having horse-free weddings. Congrats, but we regret it was not a happy day for animals,” PETA India posted on Twitter. Nick is said to have arrived on a horseback for the wedding.

Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas wedding: Here's what transpired at the Umaid Bhawan Palace
From groom Nick crooning for bride at the white wedding to PeeCee’s emotional moment at the jaimala, mid-day brings you inside details from ‘global shaadi of the year’

After the elaborate mehendi and sangeet celebrations on Friday, the weekend saw India’s favourite export Priyanka Chopra tie the knot with beau Nick Jonas in two separate ceremonies — a Christian wedding and a Hindu wedding. The desi girl gave the Jonas family a taste of Indian tradition as she followed all the customs before taking the saat pheras yesterday at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur.

One of the guests told mid-day, “The functions started as early as 8 am yesterday. The ceremonies kicked off with a puja; Nick was intrigued as he joined his bride for the mauli ceremony [where the sacred thread is tied on the wrists of the groom and bride]. Priyanka’s brother Siddharth was constantly by the Jonases’ side, explaining the significance of each ritual to them. Priyanka even indulged in a quick haldi ceremony before enjoying the chura ceremony in the afternoon. As per the custom, her uncle gifted her 21 bangles which were bathed in milk and rose petals. Her friends, including Arpita Khan Sharma, Srishti Behl Arya, Anjula Acharia and cousin Parineeti Chopra, followed it up by tying kalide.”

The Hindu wedding started at 6 pm after the Sehrabandi puja, where a family member of the groom ties the turban. The source added, “A cheer went up among the guests as the bride and groom came face-to-face at the mandap. Priyanka teared up during the jaimala session.”

The guest reveals that the white wedding on Saturday was just as exquisite, with the groom dedicating a song to his better half. “The bride and the groom wrote their own vows. It was followed by a beautiful speech by Priyanka’s mother. PeeCee turned emotional during the speech as she missed her father sorely. ”

It is heard that the Christian wedding was followed by a five-course meal, prepared by chefs who were handpicked by the couple. “Since PeeCee loves flowers, each table was named after a specific flower.”

Troubled by trolls
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas became man and wife on Saturday with the pop star's father Kevin Jonas officiating the Christian wedding. Shortly after the ceremony, the skies lit up with an extravagant display of fireworks. No sooner had the pictures gone viral on the Internet than netizens started trolling the couple. They called out Chopra for her ‘ hypocrisy’ since she was the face of an anti-pollution campaign during Diwali.

Celebrations of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s wedding, which kickstarted on Thursday, culminated into Christian and Hindu-style weddings on Saturday and Sunday respectively in the garden of the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur. Sangeet, one of the first ceremonies to take place, was held on Friday and themed ‘boys vs girls’ where members from both side of the families put their best foot forward. PeeCee’s dance with mom Madhu Chopra on “Ram Chahe Leela” from the film Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela was a hit, while Dil Dhadakne Do’s “Gallan Goodiyaan” was the most played song at the party.

The bride’s actress-cousin Parineeti enacted her as part of her performance in two of the acts, while the bride and groom’s mothers spoke about their respective children. “It all began as a fierce song and dance competition between the families but ended, as always, as a huge celebration of love. Nick and I were looking forward to the sangeet, another pre-wedding ritual... and to see what each side had put together,” Priyanka stated, praising all the performances from the evening. “Each family telling our stories through song and dance, filled with lots of laughter and love. We were both filled with gratitude for the effort, the love and the laughter and will carry the memories of this special evening for the rest of our lives. It’s an amazing start to a lifetime of togetherness for our families and friends,” she added.

On Saturday, celebrations continued with the Christian wedding with Priyanka in a custom-made Ralph Lauren gown while Nick wore a Purple Label tuxedo. The designer had also dressed the wedding party – bridesmaids, including PeeCee’s manager Anjula Acharia, wore pink and the groomsmen were in black tuxedos. Scheduled to begin at 3 pm on Saturday, the Christian wedding commenced at around 4.30 pm and was officiated by Nick’s father Kevin Jonas Sr. It was followed by a family photo-op and the cake cutting ceremony. According to reports, Priyanka and Nick exchanged Chopard wedding rings and had a traditional first dance to Roberta Flack’s “First Time I Ever Saw Your Face”. “The families got emotional during the ceremony with several members giving speeches. The celebrations ending only around 11.30 pm,” informs a source. The newlyweds exited the venue in a classic red car owned by the hotel. A firecracker show and a lavish dinner, a mix of cuisines, served in a open space was also a part of the schedule.

Welcoming her ‘jiju’ into the Chopra fold, Parineeti shared, “The job of us bridesmaids was to make sure the bride was happy and comfortable at all times. But we did not have to worry about it because Nick promised to do it all his life.”

Sunday began with a Haldi and Choora ceremony at 12.30 pm. Women sported bracelets with ‘NP’ embossed on them while it was broaches with a similar design for the men. White curtains and marigold flowers lined the venue for the ceremony that went on for two hours and was followed by lunch inside a glass-roofed hall. The Indian wedding took place at the same location as the Christian ceremony with the couple exchanging varmalas and the baraat arriving at the venue later in the evening. “There is an after-party scheduled which was expected to go on till the early hours of the morning before the duo, along with their families and guests, bid goodbye to Jodhpur,” the source signs off.

Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas wedding: ‘I do’ on Saturday, saat pheras on Sunday

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas are now officially wed – twice! The Bollywood-Hollywood power jodi took their vows on Saturday at Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhawan Palace in a Christian ceremony officiated by Nick’s father, Paul Kevin Jonas. Our sources tell us that the theme of the wedding was white and gold and the bride was dressed in a custom white Ralph Lauren gown, while the groom wore a tuxedo by the same designer.

According to sources, the wedding guests went sightseeing at Mehrangarh Fort earlier on Saturday. From the stalls selling traditional clothes and jewellery there, Sophie Turner picked up chaand balis which she wore for the mehendi.

Priyanka and Nick exchanged vows in the evening at Baradari Gardens, the open lawns at the palace, and the wedding was followed by a fireworks display and sit-down dinner with guests. White ruled the decor.

A source informs us, “There were white curtains and white centrepieces with flowers, and the seating for the guests was white too. The guests were requested not to wear white as the bride was going to be dressed in that colour.” While the bride was in white, the bridesmaids were in pastels. The source adds, “For the guests, including the bridesmaids, the theme was pastels. Priyanka’s bridesmaids were dressed in off-shoulder gowns in pastel shades of peach and pink.” Giving more details about Priyanka’s bridal gown, the source tells us, “Priyanka’s outfit was a beautiful and elaborate white gown with a long trail, almost 10 metres in length. Nick wore a white shirt with a purple tuxedo.”

“As the ceremony drew to a close, everyone gathered around and congratulated the couple. After the cake cutting, toasts were raised to Priyanka and Nick and there was a round of speeches, too. This was followed by a fireworks display. Guests went on to have dinner and celebrations continued till past 11pm,” adds the source.

The security for the wedding was tightened after an altercation between the security staff and the media earlier in the day. But the wait for Nickyanka’s wedding pictures was finally over when the actress shared some pictures from Friday’s mehendi ceremony on Instagram. Priyanka’s yellow and pink 48-kali lehenga was inspired by the colours of Rajasthan. “One of the most special things that our relationship has given us is a merging of families who love and respect each other’s faiths and cultures. And so planning our wedding with an amalgamation of both was so so amazing. An important part for the girl in an Indian wedding is the mehendi. Once again, we made it our own and it was an afternoon that kicked off the celebrations in the way we both dreamed,” Priyanka wrote in her Instagram post. In the pictures she shared, Priyanka could be seen chilling with her bridesmaids including Parineeti Chopra and Sophie Turner, and Nick’s mother Denise Miller Jonas, while Nick was having fun with his boy squad.

The Christian wedding on Saturday was followed by a haldi ceremony and a traditional Hindu wedding on Sunday. Buzz is that Priyanka and Nick will host two lavish receptions — one in Delhi on December 4, followed by another in Mumbai.

After a whirlwind romance, Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra are now man and wife. They had a Christian wedding yesterday afternoon. A source says, “Nick’s father, Paul Kevin Jonas Sr, officiated the ceremony, as per Christian norms. PC looked resplendent in a Ralph Lauren gown for the occasion and walked on a bed of flowers before saying ‘I do’. Nickyanka’s family members recreated their first date, in the latter half of the day.”

Keeping in sync with the theme of the nuptials, the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur was decked up in white. “While the sangeet and mehendi ceremonies were on, the organisers had called for over 50 kilos of white flowers for the Christian wedding. Their family and friends raised a toast to them after the groom kissed the bride in front of everyone amidst loud cheers. PC’s mom Madhu, brother Siddharth and cousin Parineeti had some wonderful things to say post the wedding. Nick’s parents and brothers also shared some secrets about the pop singer-songwriter that left everyone in splits.” The contingent then celebrated PC and Nick’s union with a cocktail dinner.

PC-Nick will tie the knot once again today afternoon in a traditional Hindu ceremony at the palace’s Baradari Lawns. While reports have suggested that Priyanka will sport a stylish red ensemble by designer duo Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla for her Hindu wedding ceremony, the presence of Sabyasachi Mukherjee at the nuptials has led to speculation that she may actually sport a traditional outfit designed by the latter. The white floral decorations will be replaced with colourful blooms that have been brought in from different parts of Jodhpur. The mandap will be around 40-feet high with the Mehrangarh Fort as the backdrop. The newly-married jodi will host a lavish party tonight for the guests and will fly to Delhi tomorrow for the first reception, which is scheduled on Tuesday evening.

A WELCOME KIT AND AN NDA
Security has been beefed up at the heritage hotel for Nick and PC’s shaadi. Nita, Isha, Anant and Mukesh Ambani along with Reshma Merchant (Anant’s friend) arrived in Jodhpur on Friday.

Meanwhile, Akash Ambani and fiancée Shloka Mehta along with to-be brother-in-law Anand Piramal landed in the Blue City on Saturday. Each guest arriving at the venue has to show their invitation card to get access to the hotel . Our source added, “They were welcomed amidst the traditional dhol and shehnai with a Rajasthani folk dance performance (kalbelia) and a welcome drink (a glass of champagne), followed by a kit that the lovebirds had arranged. It included the entire itinerary along with a wedding brief for their guests to understand the ceremonies that they were getting ready to witness. The couple handed guests a box of treats (that included Indian spices and eatables) along with a guide that had detailed information about the city and more. As per the Indian custom, they have also gifted them silver coins with the images of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. A wishing well has also been set up where the attendees can hang their greetings.” Nick and Priyanka’s initials (NP) have been installed at various places at the venue. None of the guests were aware about the functions before heading to Jodhpur as the hosts had maintained secrecy. To ensure that they don’t face any inconvenience in buying Indian attire at the last moment, pop-up stalls featuring the creations of Punit Balana and Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla were set up.

Buzz is that Nickyanka have struck a huge deal with a leading magazine and sold the rights to their wedding pictures at a whopping $2.5 million (around Rs 18 crore), which is why they don’t want any images to be out on social media. We contacted make-up artist Mickey Contractor, who refused to share any information. “I’ve just reached the hotel. I can’t say anything. We have all signed an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement),” he said before disconnecting the call.

FUN AND GAMES DURING MEHENDI
Many family members arrived with the couple on Thursday, whereas their guests including friends and other relatives started coming in only on Friday afternoon. One of the invitees informed, “Madhu Chopra got emotional during the mehendi. Priyanka looked pretty in a pink-and-yellow lehenga for the ceremony. Mehendi Hai Rachne Wali (Zubeidaa, 2001) played in the background as she reached the venue. Nick made a dhamakedaar entry wearing a silver kurta, on Sukhbir’s popular Punjabi chartbuster Tare Gin Gin. Priyanka got an elaborate mehendi done on her hands and feet, and later, the family even asked Nick to find the couple’s initials in it, which he managed to do.”

Apart from the mehendi, the team had planned some fun games, too. “It was Chopra vs Jonas — a battle royal between the two families. Parineeti hosted the event and there were several games lined up including cricket,” adds our informer.

BAND, BAAJA, SANGEET
While the mehendi was held on Friday morning, the gang was ready to rock the sangeet in the evening. “The theme was black, gold and silver, so everyone turned up in their shiniest best. The functions kicked off with a group of Rajasthani dancers performing their traditional dance form for the guests. Post that, Nickyanka walked in together and were seated on a pedestal, like a king and queen. Along with Priyanka, Nick’s mother Denise Miller-Jonas, to-be sister-in-law Sophie Turner and the ladies from his immediate family, sported saris. Nick donned a bandhgala and the men from his side also opted for Indian wear.”

The evening featured several performances from both the families narrating the couple’s love story. “Nick had prepared an entire act on his beloved’s chartbuster tracks including Tune Maari Entriyaan and Gallan Goodiyan. PC took to the stage to groove to Desi Girl. Mommy Madhu and sister Parineeti also joined her later for another song. The Jonas’ too weren’t behind. The family put up a stunning act for the couple.”

A VARIETY OF FOOD ITEMS
The hosts have ensured that the guests get a taste of various cuisines during the ceremonies. “There was a mix of Indian, Rajasthani and Mughlai dishes at the table. There was Chinese and continental food, too. For the western wedding and dinner, chefs were flown down from Goa. There were several coastal delicacies on the platter, along with Indian and continental fare. While the dishes kept changing, one thing remained the same — the food was served in silverware,” our source tells us.

Revealed: Details of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas's sangeet celebrations

Like most Indian weddings, the sangeet was full of Bollywood numbers, including many songs from Priyanka’s movies, and friendly banter between the groom and bride’s sides
Ismat Tahseen (BOMBAY TIMES; December 2, 2018)

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ wedding celebrations in Jodhpur started with mehendi and sangeet functions on Friday at Umaid Bhawan Palace. The sangeet ceremony was as filmi as you would expect. Priyanka wore a shimmery sari for the function and made an entry with her mom, Madhu Chopra, while dancing to her song Ram Chahe Leela Chahe. Her mother, too, danced with her for a while and then left the stage. It was then followed by the bride’s next performance on Desi Girl. She was joined by her cousin Parineeti Chopra as well as close friend Isha Ambani, along with the other bridesmaids. Together, they danced on another Priyanka song, Gallan Goodiyaan.

Some of the guests who arrived at Jodhpur on Friday to be a part of the wedding were Arpita Khan, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Nick Jonas’ younger brother Frankie Jonas and Mukesh Ambani with his family. The Ambanis were the last guests to arrive (at around 10 pm) and sources say they were in the city for just a couple of hours to be a part of the sangeet.

PEACOCK-THEMED DECOR
As per sources, the decor of the sangeet was based on the peacock theme, with shades of black and gold. From the reception till the sangeet venue, Kalbeliya dancers and attendants dressed up in traditional Rajasthani attire, holding flambeaus welcomed the guests.

The mehendi took place at 12.30 in the afternoon on the same day, in a smaller garden area. In keeping with the theme of the sangeet, the tables were set with dark linen that matched the shimmery table centerpieces. The garden area was also decorated with beautiful emerald green and blue faux peacock feathers and was lit up with golden lights. Informs a source, “Once everyone was ready, they settled down and the evening kick-started with a performance by a Punjabi band. Interestingly, they first played some rousing English music. Then, Anusha Dandekar and a friend from Nick’s side took over the mic as hosts for the evening.” The sangeet ceremony was choreographed by Ganesh Hegde. Singer Manasi Scott was also one of the performers.

A LITTLE NOK-JHONK
Like in most Indian weddings, PeeCee-Nick’s sangeet also saw its share of leg-pulling and nok-jhonk between the two sides, and that set the mood for what lay ahead. Adds the source, “The entire evening was like a competition between the girl and boy’s side. They were pulling each other’s leg and asking questions like, “Hey, I can pronounce your name, can you pronounce mine?” and “Can you do this Bollywood thumka?”

Post this, Priyanka’s girl gang — Parineeti, Quantico co-star Yasmine Al Masri and others — enacted her entire life story, how Priyanka started her career, her and Nick’s love story and how he proposed to her. Parineeti played her cousin in the skit. Even the mothers of the couple played a huge part to make the evening extra special. Says the source, “There was a lovely slideshow featuring childhood pictures of Nick and Priyanka. Nick and Priyanka’s mothers shared their heartfelt thoughts on what their children meant to them. They spoke about how they both were, as kids, their growing up years and how lucky they were to be their parents. It was an emotional moment for everyone.” Jaipur-based designer Punit Balana did the mehendi and sangeet outfits of the baraatis, while Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla reportedly designed the clothes of the baraatis for the wedding.

DHAMAAL ON THE DANCE FLOOR
After the emotional high, the music got everyone grooving. “They first played romantic soundtracks from Beauty And The Beast and Titanic. There were special performances by senior members from Priyanka’s side. The moment Galla Goodiyaan started playing, the couple pulled in the rest of their family members to dance to the track,” said the source. Later, there was a flower shower and a display of fireworks. Guests then went on to enjoy a lavish buffet served in antique silverware.

Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 1, 2018)

Celebrations for Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s four-day wedding kicked off soon after they landed in Jodhpur on Thursday. The guests mingled over lunch and cocktails after being welcomed with garlands and a song-and-dance performance put up by a group of Rajasthani artistes. In their rooms, goodie bags waited with a card requesting them to not carry their mobile phones to any of the events. A wedding card titled ‘Indian wedding for dummies’ with ‘your handy dandy Indian Wedding primer’ written on it furnished information on ceremonies that constitute an Indian wedding, including sangeet, mehendi, baraat and food.

Friday began with mehendi in the garden of Umaid Bhawan Palace with the Desi Girl dressed in a multicoloured outfit and guests grooving to Hindi songs. The groom-to-be rehearsed on “Galla Goodiyan” from PeeCee’s Dil Dhadakne Do with his friends for his performance that would be a part of sangeet in the evening. While the theme for the sangeet was black, gold and silver, PeeCee’s friends, including Quantico co-star Yasmine Al Massri, joined her to perform on Dostana’s “Desi Girl”, while many of the actress’s other hit tracks also played.

“As of now, no functions are scheduled to be held at the Mehrangarh Fort. While the Christian wedding takes place today, the Indian-style ceremony is planned for Sunday. Six stalls of clothes, shoes and jewellery, including that of Jaipur-based designer Punit Balana and designers Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla have been set up for the baraatis to choose their outfits,” informs a source.

Well-known wedding photographer Jose Villa is the designated photographer for the wedding. Nick’s father, Paul Kevin Jonas, will reportedly officiate the Christian wedding while PeeCee’s favourite designer, Ralph Lauren, whose creations she and her beau wore to the MET Gala last year, is said to have designed her wedding gown.

Among the star guests at the Nickyanka nuptials are internet sensation Lilly Singh aka Superwoman, American actor Jonathan Tucker, VJ Anusha and her actor-boyfriend Karan Kundrra who arrived in Jodhpur on Thursday. Veteran make-up artist Mickey Contractor, singer Manasi Scott and designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee turned up a day later. Salman Khan’s sister Arpita arrived on Friday with son Ahil while her actor-husband Aayush Sharma had to give the event a miss owing to a leg injury.

The much-awaited #Nickyanka wedding celebrations began with the couple and their friends and family arriving in Jodhpur on Thursday morning. Among the first ones to arrive were Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, with Nick’s brother Joe and his actress fiancée, Sophie Turner. Other members of their families also arrived soon after. For the guests, there were around 10 attendants (from the event management company) waiting at a booth set up inside the airport to help them with their luggage and transport. One of Nick’s friends who flew in from LA told us, “This looks grand. We all are so excited about five days of celebrations. This will be a special wedding.” The two will reportedly get married in a Christian ceremony today, which will be officiated by Nick’s father, and a Hindu ceremony on December 2, for which Nick will arrive on a horseback.

STAFF AND VENDORS SIGN NDAs, PHONE CAMERAS TAPED UP
Priyanka and Nick have made the wedding management company, vendors, staff of Umaid Bhawan Palace and everyone else, even remotely associated with the wedding prep, sign confidentiality agreements to prevent any details from leaking.

According to our sources, the 10 page non-disclosure agreement (NDA) prevents anyone from posting anything on social media, taking pictures and even talking about the wedding to anyone not invited for it. If the agreement is breached, one will have to pay their entire bill amount as penalty. For instance, if a vendor’s bill is Rs 20 lakh for the services he has provided for the wedding, as a penalty, he will have to pay the entire amount. Like it happened at Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s wedding, mobile phones have also been banned.

As per sources, there was a family brunch and cocktail dinner on Thursday. The venue, Umaid Bhawan Palace, was all lit up for the grand event and the security outside the entrance was so strict that no one was even allowed to wait or stand on the road leading to the Palace. The security guards informed us that taking pictures even outside the venue was not allowed and those working for the wedding prep have been strictly told not to take any pictures. “Cell phone cameras have been covered with tape so that no one can take any pictures. Everyone has been strictly instructed to not discuss the wedding details with anyone,” a member from the event management company, who was stationed outside the airport told us.

Even guests at the airport refused to say anything about the wedding. “I am not saying anything,” said actor Karan Kundrra, as he walked out of the Jodhpur airport with girlfriend Anusha Dandekar. The hair and make-up team that flew in from Mumbai told us, “We are not supposed to talk to anyone about the wedding.”

Umaid Bhawan Palace has flown in management staff from across India, especially for Priyanka and Nick’s wedding. One of the staff members told us, “We have come from different properties of the hotel group across India to be a part of the management team at Umaid Bhawan Palace.”

PRIYANKA’S MEHENDI IS FROM THE SAME MANUFACTURER, WHO PROVIDED HENNA FOR AISHWARYA RAI AND LIZ HURLEY’S WEDDINGS
Around 5.5 kg of henna has been ordered from a Sojat-based henna manufacturer for Priyanka’s mehendi function. Nitesh Agarwal, owner, shared, “Around a month ago, a few people from the wedding management team and a beautician, who had good knowledge of henna, came to to meet us. They took samples of our henna and after that, they gave us the final order. One week ago, 5.5 kg of henna packets were sent from Sojat to Mumbai.” The same manufacturer supplied henna for Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan’s wedding and also for Liz Hurley’s wedding in Udaipur.

Sojat, also known as Mehandi Nagri, is the main henna producing area of India, and over 90% of the country’s annual production takes place here.

#NICKYANKA’S DELHI RECEPTION ON DECEMBER 4
After winding up celebrations in Jodhpur, the couple and their families will reach Delhi on December 4, say sources. The Delhi reception will be held at a five-star hotel and apart from Priyanka’s family in Delhi, some of her close friends are expected to attend the reception.
