Warrior Savitri stirs up controversy

BOMBAY TIMES (August 24, 2016)

Hollywood director Param Gill's Bollywood debut Waarrior Savitri has landed him in trouble. The film, scheduled for release in India and the US on August 25, has apparently received backlash for its depiction of the Hindu goddess (Savitri) as a modern, 21st-century woman. Effigies bearing the image of Gill have been reportedly burnt in Raipur, Ludhiana and a few places in India. We hear, Gill has also received threats and his personal website was hacked recently. Religious fundamentalists have assumed the film to be a Western influence on an important character from mythology, thus diluting its message. In the trailer, the goddess is shown practicing martial arts to combat her enemies. Savitri, played by Niharica Raizada, depicts sexual intimacy in certain portions and will be seen wearing bold outfits in the film, which is set in Las Vegas.

Speaking from Los Angeles, Gill says, “I was inspired by the Nirbhaya case. I think women need to empower themselves. They should learn martial arts for self-defence.“

Gill and lead actress Lucy Pinder were set to board the flight for Mumbai from LA to promote the film. But fearing security issues, they chose not to. “It's frustrating to not be able to come to India to promote my first Bollywood film,“ says Pinder.

Param Gill, an American director of Indian origin, known for Hollywood film, Going to America, has acquired the rights for a biopic on well-known politician, Pappu Yadav.

The film is based on a book penned by Amarnath Jha, who has also written the screenplay of the project. Talking about why he chose to make a film on Yadav, Gill says, “The crests and troughs in the politician’s life make for a perfect commercial potboiler. He fought for the rights of the backward caste and the world needs to know his story.”

The casting of the film is underway and will be finalised soon.

Who is Pappu Yadav

Pappu Yadav has won elections to the Lok Sabha in 1991, 1996, 1999 and in 2004 from several constituencies in Bihar and is currently the leader of the Jan Adhikar Party. In February 2008, a special CBI court convicted Yadav in the CPM leader Ajit Sarkar murder case, along with former legislator Rajan Tiwari and criminal Anil Yadav. On April 2, 2009, the Patna High Court rejected Yadav’s plea to be allowed to contest the 2009 parliamentary election because he had been convicted for murder. During the 2010 Bihar assembly elections, Pappu Yadav along with Anil Yadav and Rampravesh Rai were expelled from the Rashtriya Janata Dal for anti-party activity. On May 17, 2013, Pappu Yadav was acquitted by the Patna High Court in the Sarkar murder case for want of evidence. The court also directed the authorities to release Yadav from jail if he was not wanted in any other case.
