Sohail Khan opens up on making his reality show debut, stepping out of Salman Khan’s brother image, and son Nirvaan’s Bollywood plans

Actor, director, and producer Sohail Khan is set to make his reality show debut with Alliance. Calling it an opportunity to move beyond being only seen as “Salman Khan’s brother”, Sohail says, “In the show, there’s no family name to lean on. No industry clout. It’s just me, my mind, and how I play the game.” He adds, “If people walk away seeing a side of me they didn’t expect, good. That’s exactly why I’m here.”
What intrigued him
Having watched his brother, Salman, host a reality show for years, Sohail says he never saw himself entering the same until now because the format demanded something different.
“I’ve seen what it takes, the energy, the drama, the emotional toll. And I always thought, ‘That’s his space, not mine’,” he says, adding, “Salman’s show is about personalities, conflicts and emotions. But this one is fundamentally different. It’s a game of the mind. Strategy. Outwitting people without them knowing they’ve been outwitted. That challenge appealed to me in a way nothing else has.”
Salman’s reaction
Ask him how Salman reacted when he decided to participate, Sohail says his brother was both encouraging and cautious. “He was intrigued. And then he said, ‘You sure you know what you’re getting into?’ Which, knowing him, is both a warning and a blessing. I’ll take it,” says the 55-year-old.
If the Khans played
Sohail also weighs in on what the Khan family dynamic would look like inside a reality TV show, saying each member would play the same role they do in real life. “The leader is obviously Salman.... He walks into any room and it reorganizes itself around him,” he says, adding, “The peacemaker would probably be Arbaaz (Khan, actor-director). He listens, mediates and keeps everyone grounded. And the master strategist? I’d say me, but honestly, it might be my mother (Salma Khan). She’s been managing this family for decades. Three sons, three different personalities, three different egos. If that’s not master-level strategy, I don’t know what is.”
ADVICE FOR NIRVAAN
As his son Nirvaan Khan, whom he shares with ex-wife, fashion designer Seema Sajdeh, prepares for his Bollywood debut, Sohail has one piece of advice: “He’s his own person. He’s going to find his own path, make his own mistakes and build his own career. The only thing I keep telling him is: be honest with yourself about why you want this. If it’s for the right reasons, the work will follow.”

I miss cycling around Bandra-Salman Khan

Salman Khan cycling through the streets of Bandra was once a familiar and cherished sight. The Bollywood superstar has always preferred this eco-friendly and healthy mode of travel for short distances around his home. It wasn’t uncommon to spot him riding from Galaxy Apartments to Mehboob Studios. However, ever since the attack on his house last year, Salman has been under heavy security, which has brought his cycling routines in the city to a halt. When asked if he misses riding around Bandra, Salman admitted, “Of course! I do miss it, but I still manage it at the farm (in Panvel).”
‘I taught my nephews to bike at our farm’
Speaking to us at the unveiling of Season 2 of the Indian Supercross Racing League (ISRL), where he serves as the brand ambassador, the Bajrangi Bhaijaan actor reminisced about learning to ride from his father, Salim Khan – a memory that clearly holds sentimental value. It’s a skill he has proudly passed on to the next generation.
“I taught my nephews Arhaan (Arbaaz Khan’s son) and Nirvaan (Sohail Khan’s son) to bike at our farm. They used to take turns and do wheelies at a young age. Their turns were such that they would grind the footrest on the ground,” shared the actor.

Salman also raised concerns about the growing trend of reckless biking stunts on Mumbai’s streets, particularly those done without safety measures. “I have lost a friend of mine, Timmy, when this Bandra Reclamation was under construction. They used to have these races, and he won the race, but his helmet got stuck and he couldn’t apply the brakes in time. This resulted in a crash, and he passed away.”
He also spoke about one of the best bikers he knows, saying, “You know (Zaheer) Iqbal’s father Iqbal Ratansi, he was one of the most amazing riders I have ever seen,” he said.
‘We restored Dad’s first bike for him’
Last year, Salman had shared a picture on Instagram, where he was seen posing with a vintage bike alongside his father. He captioned it: ‘Dad’s 1st bike, Triumph Tiger 100, 1956.’ Getting nostalgic, he told us, “He bought this bike when he was 16 years old for Rs. 4800.”
The legendary writer later parted with the bike, but he would often recall it in conversations with Sohail Khan. Salman shared, “Sohail sourced this bike. It was lying in a junkyard in Hyderabad. So, we got this bike from Hyderabad, sourced all the parts (that were missing) and restored it for him.”
Celebrating Eid with fans from behind bulletproof glass
Eid has been a special moment for Salman and his fans, who gather in huge numbers to catch a glimpse of him waving from his balcony. However, this year the moment came with a stark change as the actor was seen behind a bulletproof glass barrier.
Reacting to this, he said, “It is not because of any other reason, but we had to do something about the security because sometimes we would find some fan sleeping in the balcony. They used to climb up and sleep on the balcony, so we had to cover that place.”

Mumbai: A day after an FIR was filed against them, BMC said actors Arbaaz Khan, his brother Sohail Khan and the latter’s son Nirvaan have been shifted to a 5-star hotel in Bandra to complete their remaining mandatory 14-day quarantine, reports Vijay V Singh. They had arrived in the city on December 25, 2020 from the UAE. Meanwhile, it has emerged that another international flyer escaped a hotel quarantine at Dadar on December 26, but the authorities are unaware of this person’s whereabouts. BMC and the collector’s office blamed each other for the lapse and no police complaint was filed.

Mumbai: BMC has said actors Arbaaz Khan, his brother Sohail Khan and the latter’s son Nirvaan have been shifted to a fivestar hotel in Bandra to complete their 14-day quarantine.
The Khans had returned to the city from the UAE and told officials at the airport they would isolate themselves at a fivestar hotel in Bandra. Instead, they went home. BMC learnt of this on Monday, January 4, and filed a police complaint against the three for flouting the mandatory hotel quarantine rule for international flyers.
After the case was filed, civic officials forced the trio to check into a hotel for the remaining period of their 14-day quarantine. Since December 22, those who land in the city from Europe, the Gulf and South Africa have to spend seven days in a hotel or an institutional quarantine and seven more in home isolation. The rule was introduced following the outbreak of the UK strain.
A BMC official said, “One needs to complete 14 days of quarantine after returning from the countries mentioned. Khans arrived on December 25 and their 14-day period will end on January 9. According to protocol, we will test them on Wednesday or Thursday and discharge them from hotel quarantine if they test negative for Coronavirus. They don’t have any symptoms.”
In the second incident, in the early hours of December 26, five passengers who landed from one of the countries had selected a Dadar hotel to quarantine themselves in and were taken there by a bus arranged by the BMC. While four entered the hotel, one slipped away unnoticed. The other four were not related to the one who escaped.
Parag Masurkar, deputy municipal commissioner of BMC who supervises international passengers’ quarantine process said, “Since the passenger escaped without reporting at the hotel quarantine facility, we don’t have any details. Check with the collector’s office about it.” The deputy collector posted at the airport said BMC would have the case details. Mumbai suburban district collector Milind Borikar said, “We handle international flyers at the airport. The quarantine process is handled by the BMC.”

According to the complainant, the trio returned to the city on December 25 and were asked to remain in quarantine in a hotel, instead they chose to go home. Sohail reportedly told officials that they had all tested negative for the virus, so they decided to go home directly.
Following the incident, the BMC and police officials reportedly took action and sent all three to institutional quarantine at a five-star hotel near their home in Bandra. When contacted, father Salim Khan confirmed and told us, “I don’t have much details, all I know is that they are under quarantine at the hotel at the moment.”
The ministry’s norm suggests a seven-day institutional quarantine to returnees from the UK, UAE and Europe.
The state government put the norms in place after a new strain of coronavirus was reported from the UK.

Mumbai: The BMC has filed an FIR against actors Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan and the latter’s son Nirvaan for flouting the mandatory hotel quarantine rule for international flyers. They had returned to the city from the UAE on December 25 and told officials that they would isolate themselves at Taj Lands End. However, they drove home and cancelled the hotel booking, reports Vijay V Singh. Khar police booked the three under Section 188 for disobedience to an order promulgated by a public servant and 269 for a negligent act which is likely to spread infection of a disease dangerous to life.

BMC officials said on Monday they learned that the Khans had violated hotel quarantine rules and misled government officials. They checked the details with Sohail Khan as well as the hotel before filing a police complaint against them. The hotel management told the officials that the three had not checked in for quarantine.
Civic officials visited Sohail’s residence on Nargis Dutt Road in Khar (West) on Monday and he told them about his arrival along with his brother and son. Sohail reportedly told officials that they had all tested negative for the virus, so decided to go home directly.
BMC officials said they have taken up the issue seriously as such instances can increase the spread of the Coronavirus.
The assistant municipal commissioner of H-West Ward wrote to the police seeking action against the three. Thereafter, police recorded a BMC health officer’s statement to register the FIR. The health officer is a complainant in the case.
Officials said they will inquire with family members and friends of the three to find out if any of them have Coronavirus symptoms. Incidentally, Sohail’s brother, actor Salman Khan, celebrated his birthday on December 27.
After the outbreak of the UK strain, from December 22, the government had made it compulsory for people arriving from or via Europe, the Gulf or South African countries to undergo seven days of mandatory quarantine at a hotel or a BMC centre. They can be discharged from these facilities after seven days once they test negative for the virus and need to home-quarantine themselves for seven more days thereafter.

The Khar police have registered a case against actors Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan and his son Nirvaan Khan after a BMC health official filed a complaint that the trio evaded institutional quarantine of seven days after returning from the UAE last month. Police said that on arriving in the city on December 25, they underwent COVID-19 tests at the airport and told the officials concerned that they were headed to hotel Taj Land's End for quarantine, but instead they went to their Bandra West residence.
The police will now take the actors to the Richardson and Cruddas COVID centre in Byculla for quarantine. According to the police, the case was registered at the Khar police station on Monday. The cops registered the case under section 188 of IPC read with section 3 of the Epidemic Diseases Act.
Complainant Dr Sanjay Dattatray Funde is a health official at H-West ward. He conducts surveys to carry out RT-PCR tests and send COVID positive patients to hospitals and quarantine centres. According to the FIR, on Monday Dr Funde found out that the actors had arrived in the city last month and were supposed to quarantine themselves at the Taj Land's End in Bandra but they didn't. After undergoing tests at the airport, the reports for which were negative, they went to their Galaxy apartment at Nargis Dutt road in Bandra West. As per the civic body's rules, whoever returns to the city from other countries are supposed to undergo institutional quarantine for seven days even if they test COVID negative. The FIR further mentions that when Dr Funde rushed to Galaxy apartment to check, he found the trio at their residence.

Salim Khan echoes son Salman’s ‘jo dar gaya, woh bach gaya’ remark on social distancing; explains why he’s had to stay away from family

For several years now, veteran scriptwriter Salim Khan’s seafacing apartment in Bandra’s Bandstand has been an open house, with close friends of the Khan-daan often dropping by to meet one or the other member of the family. While his eldest son, Salman Khan, also holds fort at Galaxy Apartments—with a ground-floor apartment—younger sons Arbaaz and Sohail, stay barely a stone’s throw away.However, Salman, who is extremely close to his father and mother, Salma, has been at the family’s farmhouse in Panvel for the last three weeks. He moved before the nation-wide lockdown was declared to contain the spread of Coronavirus. In a video he shared online recently, the Dabangg actor revealed that he hasn’t seen his father ever since. Nor has his nephew, Nirvaan (Sohail’s son), who is camping with him there. Recalling “Jo dar gaya, samjho mar gaya”—one of the famous punchlines delivered by Gabbar Singh, the antagonist of Sholay, which was written by Salim saab and Javed Akhtar—Salman admitted that he is afraid, but in the prevailing situation, “Jo dar gaya, wohi bach gaya”. Nirvaan echoed the statement.
When quizzed on the subject of social distancing, Salim saab asserts that as a family, the Khans are taking the shutdown as normally as possible. “Salman and Nirvaan can’t come here, so they are in Panvel. When they can come, they will. There also, they are at home and we are in constant touch over video calls,” he reasons, pointing out that as the son of a DIG of Police, he is a law-abiding citizen.
The 84-year-old veteran points out that there are other families staying apart and trying to stay connected through calls. “This situation is unprecedented, no one was prepared for it. If someone is infected and comes in contact with others, they may get ill too. People are dying because of this virus, so, we must take all precautionary measures, like washing hands, avoiding shaking hands, and whatever else the authorities are advising to avoid catching an infection,” he avers.
Though Salim saab does go for a stroll in his building compound if need be, he usually stays indoors because, as he points out, if we don’t follow the guidelines, it would get difficult for everyone. “We’ve made provisions for those who work for us, including drivers and house help, besides giving them masks and sanitisers. There are many people who are struggling and we are doing our bit to help them, like getting food packets delivered to them,” he says simply.
Salim saab has seen Salman’s post and echoes his sentiment. “This is not the time for false bravado. There is a disease, and people are dying since a vaccine is not available yet. What is dearest to you is your life, and that of your family and close ones. If something happens to one person, the whole family is impacted,” he maintains.
His family lost a dear one recently. The patriarch’s grand-nephew, Abdullah, passed away on March 31 at the age of 38 due to a heart-related ailment. The family is waiting till restrictions are eased to visit Abdullah’s family in Salim saab’s hometown, Indore. The loss is too recent to discuss, but before signing off, Salim saab warns, “Stay in, stay safe, stay healthy. Never take a step that will jeopardise your life and impact your family.”

stone unturned in flagging off girlfriend Iulia Vantur's Bolly wood
career. After welcoming the Romanian TV host-actress into his home in
Galaxy Apartments, the 50-year-old actor offered her, her first singing
gig, a reworked version of the song “Baby Ko Bass Pasand Hai“, from his
last Eid release. It was promoted as a duet by the couple.Towards November-end, Iulia recorded a racy Hinglish track, “Every Night and Day, Just You and Me“, composed by Himesh Reshammiya, for his upcoming album, Aap Se Mausiiquii. The composer-actor who is a close friend of Salman and family, had immediately agreed to the actor's request to feature Iulia in one of the album's tracks, with an English hook and Hindi lyrics. The song was launched by Amitabh Bachchan on December 3 in a star-studded event where the Big B introduced Iulia as an “upcoming pop sensation“. It was followed by the songstress belting out a few lines for the guests and promising to sing a lot more in the coming future.
Now, Mirror has learnt that the Romanian beauty was rehearsing moves for her first single's music video at choreographer Ganesh Acharya's dance academy in Andheri's Four Bungalows when Salman dropped by unannounced. “Iulia had been rehearsing all day while Salman dropped by at 4 pm. He saw her perform, suggested changes, and spoke with Ganesh, before leaving with Iulia at 5:30 pm,“ a source close to the development informed Mirror. Next up, Salman is putting together a six-track music album to launch his ladylove as a pop singer in India.
“Iulia started singing in Hindi eight months ago and has been taking music lessons in Mumbai. She understands the technical ities of recording and her Hindi dic tion has improved a lot. She now wants to make a career as a professional singer,“ reveals a source close to the development.
MEANWHILE...PARTY LIKE THE KHANS
Iulia, who has become a regular fixture at all Khan-daan gatherings over the last two years, made heads turn at Salman's nephew (Sohail Khan's son) Nirvaan's 16th birthday bash on Thursday in a red gown. Held at a swanky Bandra restaurant, the do saw patriarch Salim Khan and Arbaaz give the latter's ex-wife, Malaika Arora, the cold shoulder, while they met her younger sister, Amrita, warmly. Amrita then proceeded to click selfies with the birthday boy's mum, Seema Khan, and nephew Arhaan. Malaika, who arrived in her brand new black hatchback, caught up with Iulia, who stayed close to Helen.
Ranveer Singh, who also made an appearance, was teased incessantly for his over-the-top attire at the centre of which was a grey kurta with bizarre cut-outs. Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, who are also close to the Khans, gave the bash a miss since Bebo is nearing her due date of December 20. Mum-in-law Sharmila Tagore flew down from Pataudi on Thursday to be by her side.
Iulia's earliest appearance was at Salman's 50th birthday bash, a star-studded event hosted at the actor's sprawling Panvel farmhouse. She returned to the Bay after a short visit to her homeland just in time to celebrate both Helen and Salim Khan's birthday in November.
