In 2020, Netflix released Bad Boy Billionaires: India, an investigative docu-series that focused on the country’s infamous business tycoons, including Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi. You’d agree that their meteoric rise in their respective fields, followed by their fraud cases, make for a riveting story for the big screen.
So, it’s not surprising that Karthik K — who has served as associate director to S Shankar on Sivaji (2007) and 2.0 (2018) — is helming a movie focusing on the financial scams of Mallya, Modi and Mehul Choksi, who have been the subjects of extradition efforts by the Indian government.
Titled File No 323, it will mark Karthik’s directorial debut. “Many films have been made on underworld fugitives, but our movies haven’t explored [the real-life stories] of economic fugitives who take loans from Indian banks, escape to foreign climes to live on happily. File No 323 is based on the lives of Vijay Mallya, Mehul Choksi and Nirav Modi. The film [depicts] how we’re struggling to bring such economic fugitives back,” he says.
To be made in Hindi and other regional languages, the movie will have an added emphasis on Mallya’s money-laundering and debt scam. Karthik says the narrative will be a dramatised version of events. “We want to be credible, but at the same time, it cannot be preachy. [We have done extensive research], from talking to journalists who followed these cases, to [meeting] people in the Enforcement Directorate.”
He informs that the cast will include stars from Bollywood and south film industry. The big-budget drama — produced by Vakil Khan, Kalol Das, Mihir Mutta and Prateebha Vyas — will kick off in Mumbai on November 20, and will be shot across the UK and parts of Europe.

TIMES NEWS NETWORK (THE TIMES OF INDIA; September 3, 2020)
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to entertain the petition by OTT platform Netflix against a Bihar court order restraining it from streaming a docuseries named ‘Bad Boy Billionaires’ allegedly based on rise and fall of billionaires, including Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, Subrata Roy and other business tycoons.
Soon after Netflix announced the web series, which was to be telecast from Wednesday, two petitions were filed against the show. Diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, accused in the PNB scam, filed a petition in the Delhi High Court which refused to pass interim order. The second petition was filed by the Sahara Group in a court in Bihar which directed Netflix not to telecast the documentary.
Netflix moved the apex court but a bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde refused to entertain its plea. The court said an appeal against the lower court order could not be filed directly in the SC and asked it to approach the Patna high court. “This is not the proper procedure. You should have gone to the high court,” the bench said.
Sahara Group has also filed a criminal complaint against Netflix and directors of the documentary under the Information Technology Act, Indian Penal Code and the Trademarks Act.

New Delhi: Fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi on Wednesday moved Delhi High Court against screening of an upcoming Netflix series ‘Bad Boy Billionaires’ reportedly based on Indian tycoons who ran afoul of the law.
Fearing that he has also been dragged into the documentary, Choksi claims it will amount to trial by media and jeopardise his right to fair trial, as he is an accused in the multi-crore PNB scam.
Justice Navin Chawla orally asked the counsel for Netflix to consider granting pre-screening to Choksi and cut short the controversy, listing the matter for hearing on August 28.
Choksi, the promoter of Gitanjali Gems, and his nephew Nirav Modi are accused in the Rs 13,500-crore PNB fraud case. ‘Bad Boy Billionaires’, which is scheduled to be released in India on September 2, is described on Netflix platform as “This investigative docu series explores the greed, fraud and corruption that built up — and ultimately brought down — India’s most infamous tycoons”. It takes a look at controversial cases of infamous businessmen Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, Subrata Roy and Byrraju Ramalinga Raju.
Advocate Vijay Aggarwal, representing Choksi, sought postponement of the documentary’s release, arguing that his client saw the trailer and has been receiving phone calls from across the world asking him if he is part of the documentary and seeking comments.
