(Crisp) Movie Review: NAYYI NAVELLI by FENIL SETA

On paper, Nayyi Navelli must have sounded interesting on paper. Sadly, the weak script and execution plays spoilsport. There are barely any funny scenes in the first half and thankfully, the film gets interesting when the twist occurs in the tale just before interval. But in the second half, the film again falters big time. The developments are amateur and the religious angle fails to work as intended. Yami Gautam Dhar delivers a restrained yet impactful performance. Anurag Thakur (Bantu) is the scene-stealer and is too entertaining. He and Yami make the film watchable. Addinath M Kothare has a crucial part in the story and does very well. Mita Vasisht comes next and her scene in the first half is the funniest part of the film. Sushmita Mukherjee is over the top while Suneel Sinha (S K Awasthi), Sunita Rajwar (Asha), Prateek Pachori (Pannu Chacha), Babita Pandey (Rekha Chachi) and Sonal Jha (Sumitra Tayi) are decent. All in all, Nayyi Navelli is a waste of a golden opportunity.

WILL NAYYI NAVELLI AND PRAHAAR WORK AT THE BOX OFFICE?
Tomorrow will see the release of two mid-sized but exciting films at the box office. Both the movies may not do well on the first day but have the potential to pick up if reports are on their side.
Nayyi Navelli stars Yami Gautam in the lead and marks her first association with director Aanand L Rai. The idea is very interesting - a woman is suspected of being a daayan by her husband's family, leading to madness. Yami's casting has further added to the buzz. This is her immediate release after her National Award win and therefore, the timing is just right.
However, the buzz is still limited for the film. But due to Yami Gautam and the horror-comedy genre, it'll definitely entice a section of moviegoers to check out the film. As of now, it looks like it'll open at Rs. 2-3 crores.
Prahaar, on the other hand, stars Rajkummar Rao as public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam and focuses on how the 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab was convicted of his crimes. The teaser was decent but the trailer was quite powerful and managed to catch attention.
However, the film belongs to the niche genre and therefore, it would attract only some section of the moviegoers. Also, as it’s a Mumbai-based story, it’ll largely appeal to the people of the city. That’s the ugly truth of our country – people in other parts of India simply shun stories based in Mumbai. This was also visible in the box office performance of films based on the Mumbai underworld like Satya, Shootout At Lokhandwala, Shootout At Wadala, etc. Prahaar, sadly, will go the same way.
The courtroom drama should open at Rs. 1.50-2 crore and may go higher. Both films have released at a great time. Monday is holiday of sorts while Dussehra falls on Tuesday. In other words, these films will enjoy a five-day weekend.

Yami Gautam to kick off Aanand L Rai's horror comedy Nayyi Navelli from April 7

Upala KBR (MID-DAY; April 4, 2026)
Things are moving fast on Yami Gautam Dhar’s Nayyi Navelli. In January, mid-day had reported that the actor was finalised for producer Aanand L Rai’s next (Yami Gautam preparing for Aanand L Rai’s horror comedy, Jan 8), and Prime Video officially announced the horror comedy in March. Now, it’s time for execution. From April 7, Gautam will face the camera for Balaji Mohan’s directorial venture that revolves around a new bride who is not what she seems.
The director will begin with a month-long schedule in Mumbai.
A source told mid-day, “Yami and some of the cast members, including theatre actors, will begin shooting in Malwani near Malad. Production designer Ravi Srivastava and his team have built a massive set reflecting an Indian town, where Yami’s introductory scenes with her friends and family as well as her wedding sequences will be filmed.”
In May, the cast and crew will move to Bhopal and then Meerut for a two-month schedule. That’s where the story will unravel, as Yami’s character is shown moving into her in-laws’ house in a small town after her wedding.
The source added, “They will film the sasuraal portions, in which certain inexplicable events take place. At first, her character is shown as a picture-perfect bride. But soon, her brother-in-law and his family members start suspecting her motives and wonder whether she possesses supernatural powers. The story blends horror, comedy, and mythology.”
While Rai previously backed the horror film Tumbbad (2018), this marks his first supernatural comedy.
