Milind Soman on whether his character in the J Dey biopic is modelled on Raj Thackeray

"Just before the elections, I want two riots. I'll back the non-Hindus but also target them," these lines delivered by Milind Soman in the trailer of Jaypraad Desai's upcoming crime thriller Nagrik, has YouTube buzzing. According to the grapevine his character is modelled on Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray. But quiz him on this and Milind guffaws, "Raj lives a minute away from me. He is practically my neighbour." Then, clearing his throat, he adds, "I play a politician yes, and if there is any similarity between Raj and my character it's only because of our schooling, upbringing, a particular political ambition and of course, my look in the film."
Two decades after he first featured in the Alisha Chinai music video, Made In India, the actor has been in the news mostly for his health initiatives. But he's quick to dispel notions that Nagrik, based on the life and death of senior crime reporter Jyotirmoy Dey, is his comeback film.
"Just four months ago, I worked in a Marathi film, Astu, about a retired Sanskrit professor suffering from Alzheimer's who goes missing while travelling with his daughter. But no one talked about the film or wrote about it. But the makers of Nagrik are leaving no stone unturned to promote their film and I've now come to understand how important and difficult publicity is," he admits.
Nagrik marks the comeback of 87-yearold veteran Dr. Shriram Lagoo who plays Godfather-like character. "We have some intense scenes together. He is the silent sort and his character, much like the film, explores how little we really understand Indian politics thanks to the infotainment news channels offer," he points out.
The 49-year-old actor has also been filming with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his upcoming period-romance, Bajirao Mastani. Quiz him about his villainous role in the magnum opus and Milind twirls on his handlebar moustache, "The rumours that I am playing the 'big villain' are completely incorrect. It's a unique character, that of a fun-loving Maratha warrior. Honestly, in a love story about two lovers how much of a role can a third wheel have?"
Incidentally, it was Milind's Maratha lineage that charmed SLB. "Yes, I am Maratha and the way I look adds to my character in the film," he grins. "But I haven't asked him if that was why he cast me in his film."

If the latest buzz in the industry is to be believed, then Milind Soman who is a part of an upcoming Marathi film, Nagrik, has not been promoting the film of late. This is because he is busy shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani.
Nagrik is said to be based on the life of mid-day’s slain crime journalist J Dey. Milind after initial weeks of promotions stopped turning up at promotional events.
Says a source, “Milind plays a powerful politician in the film and attended a couple of events initially. However, recently when the team began channel interactions and reality show visits, he didn’t turn up at the last minute in spite of promising the makers.” Those in the know say that the producer was unhappy about the situation, but couldn’t do anything about it.
Another source says,“Milind has already committed to shoot for Bajirao Mastani in which he is playing negative role. So he is currently completing the shoot in Film City and cannot attend all the promotional events.”
Producer Sachin Chavan denied the buzz. While Milind maintains, “I wonder why anyone would say that. I have been a part of a few promotional events, but my recent shooting schedule for Bajirao Mastani is overlapping with Nagrik’s promotion dates. The producer and I are reworking our time-table so that I can continue to be part of it.”

On June 11, 2011, at around 3
pm, Jyotirmoy Dey, the crime and investigative
editor of a city tabloid, was returning home from
Ghatkopar after meeting his mother Bina Dey when he was shot dead by
four unidentified motorcycle-borne gunmen in Powai's Hiranandani
Gardens. What followed was a barrage of reportage, a nationwide manhunt
and weeks of mourning.
Now, New York-returned, debutant Marathi filmmaker, Jaypraad Desai, has re-created J Dey's life in his socio-political drama, Nagrik with Sachin Khedekar playing the senior journalist who found himself in the midst of a nexus between criminals, politicians and the media. The film will open on June 12.
“Milind Soman plays a typical politician, 87-year-old Shriram Lagoo makes his comeback as a neta with shades of grey and Dilip Prabhavalkar plays a prominent stakeholder,“ reveals Jaypraad who took five years to pen the script along with his co-writer, political correspondent and noted Marathi poet, Mahesh Keluskar, who followed the case years after the media stopped reporting it. “Apart from journalists we also met builders and other stakeholders.“
Won't the film rub a lot of people the wrong way? “If the film ruffles a few feathers I'm unapologetic about it,“ retorts Jaypraad, admitting that one of the reasons he chose to make the film in Marathi. “Fiction comes from non-fiction but the nomenclature of Bollywood is limited to a certain set of ideas. In contrast, Marathi cinema has redefined itself into a far braver medium with interesting content. I agree a bi-lingual film would get a wider reach and eventually that is the goal.“

If sources are to be believed, a Marathi film loosely based on mid-day’s crime reporter Jyotirmoy Dey, who was shot dead in 2011, will soon go on the floors. Sachin Khedekar will essay J Dey’s role in the movie titled Nagrik, suggest sources.
“Khedekar will play a journo called Shyam Jagdale, who works for a daily called Aaj Mumbai. Due to his honesty, he makes enemies and becomes a victim of politics,” an insider says.
The makers, however, do not want to publicise the film as a J Dey biopic, states a source, adding: “Though there is some resemblance to a real-life incident relating to a journalist, the production team wants to call it a work of fiction to avoid any controversy.” The film is likely to be released around Dey’s death anniversary which falls on June 11. The veteran journalist was gunned down in Powai by motorcycle-borne assailants. At that time, he was investigating the nexus between the police and the underworld.
Without revealing much, Khedekar says, “The film revolves around the character of a senior reporter caught in a big political conspiracy. Current events in today’s politics are also discussed in the film.”
