2 SMALL FILMS TO TRY THEIR LUCK BEFORE HAPPY NEW YEAR
The big Diwali release Happy New Year is all set to release next Friday on October 24. As always is the case before the release of a biggie, the week before will see the release of 2 small budget films. Last year, a week before 2013 Diwali release Krrish 3, almost half a dozen films had hit theatres and all of them tanked. This year thankfully there are only 2 films but sadly, both films stand no chance to succeed. My views:
SONALI CABLE: It has an interesting title and stars Rhea Chakraborty in an author backed role of an owner of a small internet providing company and how she battles a multinational company, which is trying to usurp her business. Anupam Kher plays the baddie and Ali Fazal is her love interest. The trailer is alright while the songs just didn’t pick up. 2 shows for media have already taken place and the response has been very bad. Even amongst the moviegoers, there isn’t much of awareness, forget excitement for the film.
MUMBAI 125 KM: The film has been in the making since almost 2 years. It stars Veena Malik as the ghost and is filmed in 3D. It stars Veena Malik (as the ghost), Karanveer Bohra and Vedita Pratap Singh and is a horror cum erotic film. The trailer of the film is extremely boring and neither induces scare nor titillation. The horror erotica element might help the film at some pockets.

UPDATE ON HAIDER, BANG BANG, EKKEES TOPPON KI SALAAMI
Both Haider and Bang Bang released during the best weekend of the year. After all, there were 5 back to back holidays. A well-made biggie would have excelled significantly at the box office. Sadly, Bang Bang got mixed response and the collections came down after the holiday period got over. Many expected the film to pick up during the second weekend but that just didn’t happen. At best, the film would be an average grosser, despite crossing 140 crore as it’s a costly film.
Haider, on the other hand, too has underperformed. However, looking at the genre of the film, it is praiseworthy that it has earned so much and that it’ll reach the 50-crore mark. The makers tried their best in making the film at as less amount of money as possible. Such films surely can’t be expected to be 100-crore-grossers and that even if it touches 50 crore is a feat in itself!
Lastly, Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami has been a surprise. It might not be a huge grosser but the word of mouth is very positive and people have loved the satire and the essence of the film. A film of such stature with very less hype would have disappeared from theatres in Week 2. But Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami has been sustained in many theatres in the second week. Hopefully, it’ll earn decently till it gets out of the theatres after Happy New Year.

In your last film, you had worked with known faces like Jimmy Sheirgill and Sanjay Suri. What made you opt for newcomers this time?
I wanted to shoot the film in 3D, which is time consuming, and wanted actors who could give me dates at a stretch for the shoot. Hence, I opted for TV actors and newcomers. But the plot is the actual hero.
Apparently, you cast Veena Malik in the ghost's role after watching her tantrums on a reality show?
I liked her attitude and quirky behaviour, which is exactly what my ghost is all about.
What is the USP of your film?
It's a story about a single night and all the horror elements that transpire on a road trip, which has not been seen in our films before. Five friends are on their way from Pune when they experience a bizarre incident and get holed up 125 kms away from Mumbai. Along with my co-producer Nishant Pitti of Easemy trip on board, we did the right kind of promotion and are ready with the film.

Mumbai 125 KM director to make India's first silent horror film

Hemant Madhukar, son of
veteran Telugu filmmaker K Baburao, is looking forward to Mumbai 125 Km
that releases on September 26. “Usually, horror films revolve around old
bungalows or palaces and are shot indoors, but my story takes place on a
highway," he says.
Featuring Karanvir Bohra and Veena Malik, the film has stereoscopic 3D technology that was seen in Hollywood films like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Avatar. Since such high-end visual effects make the post-production time-consuming, he has had to delay the film's release by over a year.
Madhukar adds, “We've also used surround sound for a dramatic effect that will jolt the audience."
When asked why he was so fascinated by horror stories, the director says, “The horror genre gives the director a platform to showcase his talent. It is entirely a director's medium. It is his work that will speak. The other genres are more of an actor's medium. Also, I have been inspired by scary movies, The Ring and Dark Water being my favourites."
And here's the real news peg. Madhukar's next, Silence, will be the country's first silent horror film. About the movie, the director says, “It is the eerie ambience that will spark off fear. I will soon zero in on the cast and begin the shoot in October."
Madhukar is also committed to making a romcom for a production house with which he has a three-film deal

125 KM 3D director teams up with Easemytrip.com for 3-film deal

Director-turned-producer Hemant Madhukar, of Light And Shadow Films, has now joined hands with online booking portal, Easemytrip.com, for a three-film deal. Together, the two parties plan to co-produce films centred around the theme of travel. The idea behind this venture is to create entertaining films that will also have travel play an important role in the story.
It may be pointed out that Hemant Madhukar, the son of veteran South film producer and director K Baburao, has already directed three films so far. “We’ve joined hands with Easemytrip. com’s Nishant Pitti, since we realised that our take on films was similar. We want to make a certain kind of cinema for our audiences; I look forward to this association,” says Madhukar.
On his part, Pitti, CEO, Easemytrip. com, too sounds optimistic about their forthcoming projects. “Hemant is a very talented filmmaker and we hope to create something fresh with this three- film deal. Our portal is known worldwide and now we hope to excel in the film production business as well,” he says.
Their first film has been titled Mumbai 125 KM 3D. Directed by Madhukar, this film will release on September 26 this year.
