Mishti Chakraborty is just one film old in Bollywood, but she is very sure of what she wants, be it about films or the other facets of life

How was it working with Subhash Ghai, Rishi Kapoor and Mithun Chakraborty?
Kaanchi was my first film in Bollywood and being able to work with such great actors was a dream come true. I got to learn a lot from Subhashji and all the other veteran actors. It was a great opportunity .
You are an English (Hons) graduate from Kolkata University. How did films happen?
I had done a Bengali film while I was in college and the associate director, Arindam Ray, came for his own interview as an assistant director to Subash Ghai's office. When he learnt that they still hadn't found the lead for Kaanchi, he suggested my name. When he asked me to come for the audition, I just packed my bags and flew to Mumbai without even asking what it's about.
Is there any social cause that you feel passionately about?
I'd like to do something for animals because they are very few people to think about them. The kind of unconditional love they give you is something you seldom get from people.
What do you desire in your ideal life partner?
An ideal partner for me would have to be my best friend because being from the film industry, with all the late night shoots, parties, etc, I'd need somebody who trusts me.
How do you maintain your locks?
I don't do much for my skin and hair. I think it's genetic because my mom is really pretty . She gives me a complex. But, I make sure I drink a lot of water and take a lot of supplements like vitamin E and D and Omega 3. That's about it.
Your take on fashion?
More than looking good, fashion is about feeling good. If you are confident and com fortable in what you are wearing, you will look good naturally.
How do you de-stress?
I have a pet dog Shadow. She is the love of my life. When I reach home, she is all over me. I don't need any spa, she is the best stress-buster.
How do you maintain your figure?
I have good metabolism, which is why I don't put on weight easily. But, I'm a big foodie. I have chocolates and ice-creams; I can't live without sweets. But I avoid junk food.
Who do you think is the most stylish person in Bollywood?
Among actors, it would be Hrithik Roshan, and among the actresses, it is certainly Deepika Padukone.
How is it working in different industries?
I have worked in a Bengali film to start with, then Bollywood and then, Telugu. The basic film industry is the same every where. The techniques will vary from director to director because a film is always a director's point of view. Bollywood is a much bigger industry with a wider reach.
Is there any message that you would like to give your fans out there?
All I'd like to say is that I love you a lot. And thanks for all the support.

My real name is Indrani Chakraborty-Mishti

Mishti, that’s not your real name…
No, my real name is Indrani Chakraborty and Mishti is my nickname. But since it is far sweeter, most of my friends and members of my family have always called me by my nickname. Even Subhash Ghai chose to introduce me as Mishti in Kaanchi.
Kaanchi was initially scheduled for an August 15, 2013 release, but has been delayed by almost eight months. It must be an agonising wait?
No, I’ve always been patient. Moreover, a date is just a number. I remember Subhashji telling me on the first day of the shoot that it’s important for an actor to have complete faith in the director. And I have that. I’ve learnt the A to Z of filmmaking in his gurukul. And since he’s making his comeback as a director six years after Yuvvraaj, he’s determined not to release Kaanchi till he’s completely satisfied. It’ll be out on April 25 now. The delay has worked in our favour because women-centric films are doing well these days .
Before Kaanchi, you had worked in the Bengali film, Porichoi as Indrani. It was directed by Basu Chatterjee’s daughter Rupali Guha and was supposed to open last September. You’ve disassociated yourself from the film since, thereby upsetting your co-star Prosenjit Chatterjee.
Porichoi was my big commercial break in Bengali films. The film revolves around me and Prosenjit-- who plays my estranged father. He is such a great guy. He stood by me when my passport was rejected because the photograph was slightly smudged. The rest of the unit was already in London by then. The shoot was delayed by 20 days because of me and at one point there were talks of replacing me. But he insisted they wait as it was not my fault. I hardly knew him then. His comments about me were misinterpreted. I discovered this when I called him. Porichoi’s associate director Arindam Ray is Subhashji’s chief assistant. He was the one who showed my pictures to Subhashji and I landed Kaanchi. It will be my Bollywood debut. How does it matter if I’ve worked in regional films before? I’ve never concealed the fact. I’m proud of all my films.
You’ve worked in a Hindi film too, Strings of Passion, co-starring Zeenat Aman and Indrani Haldar…
Oh! that that was just a 10-second appearance. I had done a Bengali docu-feature with Sanghamitra Chowdhury, Bidehir Khonje Rabindranath. I had gone to wish Sanghamitra when she started Strings of Passion. I was just a teenager then. When she asked me to sit on a sofa in front of the camera I didn’t question her, since I’ve always been respectful towards people. The attempt to use my name to promote the film later wasn’t right. But I hold no grudges, Sanghamitra is still a friend.
Is it true that you have an exclusive three-film contract with Mukta Arts?
Yes, but I am free to do films with other banners with their consent.
You’re the sixth heroine to be launched by Ghai after Meenakshi Sheshadri, Madhuri Dixit, Manisha Koirala, Mahima Chaudhuri and Isha Sharvani. What, according to you, were their USPs?
Meenkashi’s was her compassionate face, Manisha’s was her serenity and that divine face. Mahima’s USP is her bubbly charm, Isha’s is her flexible body and Madhuri is extraordinary from head to toe.
And what’s Mishti’s?
Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. So ask the viewer!
