Aditya Roy Kapur has had successful projects such as Aashiqui 2 (2013), Malang (2020), The Night Manager and Metro…In Dino to his credit. But oftentimes, more than his acting skills, his good looks get the limelight.
Ask the actor if he feels that his work gets overshadowed because of his appearance, and he agrees: “I do get that, but I don’t lose too much sleep over it. Eventually, water finds its level and the more work you do, you know that’ll come to the fore. If you start thinking about things like, ‘I’m not getting this’ and start looking for validation, you can easily become cynical and start having a negative attitude towards things.”
Instead, the 39-year-old takes it positively when people talk more about his appearance. “I know that my looks get talked about more than my work at times, but I don’t fixate on it or allow myself to get cynical about it. I believe your work speaks for itself. And if you’ve done enough work over time, people realize your worth eventually,” the actor says.
Meanwhile, he goes on to talk about the importance of social media in showbiz, adding that he tries to keep himself away from the virtual world. “Things have changed in the last 10-15 years. I don’t read about myself regularly. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss. You can choose how much you want to clutter or declutter your head. And today, an important skill is how to learn to switch off and to choose what information you want to consume and in what measure,” Aditya ends.

WILL SON OF SARDAAR 2, DHADAK 2 CONTINUE THE MOMENTUM AT THE BOX OFFICE?
The month of July was maybe the best one for the industry in a long time. Every week, at least one film managed to be a success at the box office, across languages. On July 4, Metro…In Dino started on a slow note but then picked up and held steadily. Jurassic World: Rebirth was a hit from day 1 and will cross the Rs. 100 crore mark. A week later, Superman also managed to do well. On July 18, Saiyaara opened with a bang and is now all set to be a Rs. 350 crore grosser, shocking one and all. Not much was expected from Mahavatar Narsimha, but it showed a historic trend. After opening at just Rs. 1.45 crores, it collected Rs. 3.50 crores on Saturday and a huge Rs. 6.85 crores. On Tuesday, thanks to the discounted ticket offer, it earned Rs. 5.50 crores. At this rate, it’ll have first week collections of around Rs. 28-29 crores and can hit the Rs. 50 crore mark or even more in its lifetime.
Meanwhile, two significant films will be out tomorrow, August 1. Son Of Sardaar 2 was all set to be out on July 25, but was postponed on July 19 due to the unstoppable Saiyaara wave. The decision was a good one, as Son Of Sardaar 2 would have faced problems in getting screens.
The comic caper stars Ajay Devgn, Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishan, Neeru Bajwa, Deepak Dobriyal, Kubbra Sait, Chunky Panday, Sharat Saxena, Vindu Dara Singh, Roshni Walia, Sanjay Mishra, Ashwini Kalsekar and the late Mukul Dev. From the trailers, it looks like a fun entertainer with the song 'Pehla Tu Duja Tu' becoming a rage, especially its unusual dance step.
However, the buzz for the film is limited. It’ll open at around Rs. 7-8 crores and might have an outside chance of crossing the Rs. 10 crore mark. A good word of mouth will help in better collections on Saturday and Sunday.
Dhadak 2, meanwhile, is backed by Karan Johar and is a remake of the 2018 acclaimed Tamil film, Pariyerum Perumal. It stars Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri and was in the news as it faced issues over its censor process. The Central Board of Film Certification finally passed the film in May but with several cuts. The trailer is decent but for a film like this, songs need to be chartbusters, which hasn’t happened here.
Dhadak 2 should open around Rs. 4-5 crores. Both films have a discount offer and that would help in a push in the footfalls.

Even men face the wrath of patriarchy-Fatima Sana Shaikh

Fatima Sana Shaikh has had a busy July with two back-to-back releases — Metro…In Dino and Aap Jaisa Koi. Both the films explored love in different ways. Talking about her tryst with love stories, the actor quips, “I’m living my love life through my films.”
In both the films, her character was battling for a relationship of equals. Ask about it, and she says, “Equality in a relationship is very important. I wouldn’t want my partner to change me or vice versa. Two people get attracted to each other because of who they are. That’s why it’s important to first respect each other, and once that happens, everything is fine.”
In Aap Jaisa Koi, she stars alongside R Madhavan, a character with a patriarchal mindset. Fatima asserts that “it’s not only women”, but also men who suffer because of it: “So many men are in toxic relationships. But when they come out with their stories, they are ridiculed. That is also due to patriarchy, as [the belief is that] boys are not supposed to cry and they can’t complain. So, even men face the wrath of patriarchy.”
The recent feud between actor Deepika Padukone and filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga over the film Spirit raised a debate that when female actors make demands, they are termed unprofessional. Ask Fatima if she feels that women taking a stand for themselves ruffles the feathers of male bigwits, and the 33-year-old agrees.
But she adds that things are changing: “The understanding of what a woman thinks is changing, as there are more working women now. The perception about how a woman should be like and what kind of roles she should do is also changing. Now, we can imagine a woman as a villain too. Earlier, there would only be men antagonists.”
Param Sundari delayed because of Metro…In Dino and Saiyaara?

Param Sundari, which is now scheduled to release by late August, was postponed from its July release date since the makers wanted to avoid coming on the back of July’s two romantic offerings

In June, mid-day reported that Param Sundari’s release was being pushed from July 25 to avoid a clash with Son of Sardaar 2 (Making way for Ajay, June 21). But it looks like there was another reason why the Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor-starrer’s date with the audience was delayed. Sources say that the makers didn’t want it to come on the back of two romantic releases — Metro…In Dino and Saiyaara — this month.
Tushar Jalota’s directorial venture will apparently now release on August 29 or September 5. A source said, “Param Sundari has its own voice. With two romantic dramas releasing in quick succession, the makers didn’t want it to be reduced to just another love story. They felt that Param Sundari would benefit from a breather.”
We’ve heard the delay is being utilized to the fullest. “The team will shoot a promotional track closer to the release as Sidharth is currently busy with his new role as a father,” added an insider.

While he enjoys the web medium for its ‘relaxed’ nature, Aditya Roy Kapur says the high of a big-screen release is unparalleled

Aditya Roy Kapur’s recent release Metro…In Dino has done well at the theatres. The actor, who has experienced the big screen as well as the web, enjoys both the mediums.
“A film is a commercial enterprise and when it opens in a theatre, you want it to do well. However, at the end of the day, you have to let go, irrespective of how the film does. There’s an added zing to a theatrical release that is not apparent when something releases on OTT. But on OTT, you’re a little more relaxed, which is fun too,” says Aditya, who has been part of successful OTT outings such as Ludo (2020) and The Night Manager (2023).
He adds that having a film hit the big screen “is an amazing feeling”. Talking about his recent outing, directed by Anurag Basu, the 39-year-old says,
“I was so excited to be back with Dada (Anurag). We had such a great time on Ludo, but it felt like it was not complete. It felt like there was more to explore, so when he called about this film and told me the ideas that he had for this track, and for this character, it was very exciting,” he says.
The actor was seen alongside actor Sara Ali Khan as his love interest in Metro… In Dino. Earlier, his romantic pairings with actor Shraddha Kapoor in Aashiqui 2 (2013) and actor Disha Patani in Malang (2020) were also appreciated for their chemistry.
Ask how he manages to strike that on screen, Aditya says, “I don’t think it’s something two people can sit and plan, saying we will now conjure it up. It’s either there or not there. And that’s for the audience to judge. Good writing helps though and so does a good director, as they put you in situations that bring the best out of the two actors.”
(Crisp) Movie Review: METRO...IN DINO by FENIL SETA

Metro…In Dino has a messy start but soon, it gets on track. There are several characters and interconnected plots and soon, they start showing their charm. There are nearly 14-15 songs but they are very well woven into the narrative. Anurag Basu once again goes for 'sung-dialogues' a la Jagga Jasoos, La La Land etc. which makes for a novel watch. On the flipside, some scenes are too silly and unconvincing. At places, the execution is haphazard. It's mandatory to see the film with rapt attention; or else, you might miss out on certain important plot points. The track of the daughter is forced and a few tracks are not culminated properly. The stories of Pankaj-Konkona and Aditya-Sara get maximum screen time while the rest get a raw deal, unlike Life In A Metro where every track had equal prominence. Speaking of performances, Pankaj Tripathi delivers one of the best performances of his life. He gets the chance to play an interesting role and he takes it to dizzying heights. He overpowers every other actor in the film; such is his performance. Konkona Sen Sharma, as always, gives her best shot. Sara Ali Khan is just okay. Aditya Roy Kapur effortlessly slips into his part. Ali Fazal is decent but is let down by limited screen time. Fatima Sana Shaikh looks stunning and performance-wise, she's first rate. She proves yet again why she deserves to be seen more. Neena Gupta and Anupam Kher are lovely as expected. Saswata Chatterjee, Kush Jotwani (Anand), Darshana Banik (Jhunuk), Rohan Gurbaxani (Aryan) and others lend able support. All in all, Metro…In Dino is a breezy musical entertainer, with Pankaj Tripathi's performance being the icing on the cake.

Admitting that she said yes to Anurag Basu’s Metro… In Dino without hearing the story, Fatima Sana Shaikh on how her approach to projects has changed in the past two years

The way Fatima Sana Shaikh was offered Metro…In Dino could be a scene straight out of one of Anurag Basu’s slice-of-life films — imagine the lead character getting an all-important phone call, but being unable to hear anything due to poor network.
“When Dada [Basu] called to talk about Metro, he started describing the story and my character. Because of poor network, I could hardly hear him. I could only catch random words like ‘this girl, that boy’. So, I kept saying, ‘Hmmm,’” laughs Shaikh, as she recalls the episode. At the end of the patchy call, she agreed to do the film. She explains, “I didn’t need a narration. With him, you surrender.”
This faith comes from having worked with Basu on Ludo (2020). That was enough for Shaikh to know that the filmmaker doesn’t waste his actors. That’s one of the reasons he could put together the impressive ensemble cast — Neena Gupta, Anupam Kher, Konkona Sen Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Sara Ali Khan — for Metro...In Dino.
“Big or small, all his characters have depth. He never wastes an actor. Also, he won’t mislead you, saying, ‘Itna bada character hai.’ He is honest,” says Shaikh.
What adds to the joy is the director’s unusual way of shooting that relies on actors’ spontaneity. “We went to the set and discovered the story. It’s not that he doesn’t have a script. He chooses not to share it because he doesn’t want his actors to read it so many times that their performance gets set.”
Shaikh was last seen in Sam Bahadur (2023). In the last two years, the actor has not only shot for multiple projects, but also become more “open”.
“Earlier, I wasn’t very confident as an actor. So, I was apprehensive to take up women-led stories. I feared that I may not be able to shoulder them. Now, my approach has changed. I think about how much fun it would be to play a character that is out of my depth.”
She has also become clearer about what to reject. “If the character is vanilla, no matter how good the film is, I say no. I’ve turned down big films because I felt the character was one-note. What’s the point of doing projects if I’m not growing as an actor?”
