Dhurandhar 2 pre-sales soar: Can Bollywood’s sequel curse be broken?

The film to release in India on 5,000-5,500 screens, could earn up to Rs. 80 cr on opening day
Rajesh N Naidu (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; March 9, 2026)

Mumbai: After a string of underwhelming Bollywood sequels — War 2, Dhadak 2, Mastiii 4, Jolly LLB 3 and De De Pyaar De 2 — the industry is watching whether Dhurandhar 2 can buck the trend. Exhibitors and distributors are citing strong early demand that suggests the film could break the jinx at a time when Bollywood is grappling with box office volatility and old formulas that are no longer working.

According to film trade analysts, the film will release in India on 5,000–5,500 screens and is likely to record Rs 75-80 crore in collections on opening day, March 19.

Audience appetite has been whetted by the blockbuster success of espionage actioner Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt and others. Released in 2025, Dhurandhar is one of the biggest films ever, having grossed Rs. 1005.8 crore in India alone and close to Rs. 300 crore in the overseas markets, according to box office data research firm Sacnilk.

In overseas markets, the sequel has generated advance or pre-release ticket sales worth $800,000.

“This is not an ordinary sequel. Audiences have already bought tickets worth more than Rs 5 crore for preview shows (March 18) alone,” said Shaaminder Malik, a film distributor and trade analyst. “They don’t want to know spoilers before their theatre experience. Tickets are being sold in a premium price range of Rs 300 to Rs 2,500 for a four-hour film. This shows the audience’s eagerness.”

Experts said Dhurandhar 2 is a proper tentpole release expected to drive significant box-office momentum.

“It is already reflected in its ticket sales,” said Gautam Dutta, CEO, revenue and operations, PVR Inox. “It will be the biggest release in terms of screens in India. In fact, a comforting factor is that the film has at least two weeks with no major release, which means the scope for record collections is high.”

Optimism about Dhurandhar 2’s performance increased recently with the release of Toxic: A Fairy Tale For Grown-Ups being delayed--it was to have debuted on the same day.

“The postponement of Toxic: A Fairy Tale For Grown-Ups has effectively cleared the competitive landscape for Dhurandhar 2,” said Suniel Wadhwa, co-founder and director, Karmic Films. “When two highly awaited big films don’t clash, exhibitors typically allocate 40–50% more premium screens and show slots to the releasing film, which can materially strengthen its opening-day collection. In theatrical economics, clashes create headlines, but clear release windows create box office records.”

Dhurandhar 2 will be dubbed in all four southern languages, unlike the original, which was released only in Hindi.

“The sequel is dubbed in multiple southern languages, which broadens its reach in the southern territories, thereby significantly boosting its India collections by at least 25–30%,” said producer Rajesh R Nair. Screen density, especially single-screen halls, and overall screen share (over 50%) in the southern markets is higher than in the rest of India.

Conservative estimates by trade analysts suggest the film could record an opening weekend collection of Rs 250-300 crore.

“In the absence of competition, I think the film’s collections could easily be boosted by at least 25%,” said Girish Johar, film producer and industry expert. “Given the high audience interest, I foresee an opening weekend collection of Rs 300 crore for the film.”

Delhi High Court issues notice to Mastiii 4 makers on plagiarism plea

Delhi HC issues notice to Mastiii 4 makers on plagiarism plea

HINDUSTAN TIMES (January 9, 2026)

Trouble appears to be brewing for Mastiii 4 (2025), directed by Milap Zaveri. Content creator and RJ Ashish Sharma has approached the Delhi High Court, alleging that a comedy sequence in the film mirrors his viral Reel.

According to Live Law, Ashish claimed that the scene resembles his January 2024 reel Shaq Karne Ka Nateeja, which has over 11 million views. He has alleged unauthorized use of his original idea, storyline, character interactions and punchline and has sought a permanent injunction, compensation and disclosure of the film’s profits.

The matter came up for urgent hearing before Justice Tushar Rao Gedela on Jan 6. Taking note of the film’s upcoming digital release, the court issued notice to the producers, observing that they must be given an opportunity to respond before any interim relief is considered.

The judge also said that a short notice period was justified given the stage of the film’s release. The case is scheduled to be heard next on Jan 13. Mastiii 4 stars Vivek Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani. Milap and Ashish were unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.

Winning a pageant opened doors, but it didn’t guarantee work-Ruhi Singh

‘Winning a pageant opened doors, but it didn’t guarantee work’

Vishakha Pandit (HINDUSTAN TIMES; December 10, 2025)

People think winning a pageant opens every door professionally, but that’s not entirely true, says Ruhi Singh. Miss Universal Peace and Humanity 2014. “It opens options, but doesn’t guarantee work, only a moment of visibility. After that you start from zero again,” she explains. The model-actor calls pageants “only a structured route to achieve my dream of becoming an actor”.

She says, “There’s always been a stereotype that if you come from a pageant, you’re ‘model material’, not acting material. But that box had nothing to do with the actor I wanted to be, or actor I am.” She adds, “I’ve done theatre, character workshops, everything. I just wanted to learn the craft honestly. My journey has not been a walk in the park.”

Her OTT work, including Runaway Lugai, reshaped how filmmakers see her. She says, “OTT changed the game for me… It showed makers I can do more than what my image suggests. The industry is more willing to experiment directors and producers see performers, not labels.”

Ruhi, who recently starred in Mastiii 4, adds, “Comedy is the toughest genre. I studied Juhi Chawla, Paresh Rawal, Johny Lever and Sridevi. Cracking a role and seeing it release, creates a whole new ball game,” she signs off.

In Mastiii 4, we made sure the costumes were not vulgar-Elnaaz Norouzi

Elnaaz Norouzi on Mastiii 4: We made sure the costumes were not vulgar

Actor Elnaaz Norouzi says she starred in ‘Mastiii 4’ after being assured that the women were on a strong footing in the story and the costumes wouldn’t be vulgar
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; November 24, 2025)

When Mastiii 4 came Elnaaz Norouzi’s way, she almost turned it down. The actor wasn’t keen to front an instalment of a sex comedy franchise known for its raunchy humour. But a narration with director Milap Zaveri changed her decision about the Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi, and Aftab Shivdasani-starrer.

“When Milap narrated the script to me, I realized how well it is written for 2025. The women had so much more to do, and it felt like an equal script to me. I also felt it had a good message at the end and was not like the other instalments,” recalls the actor.

Sex comedies are often criticized for how they portray women. Norouzi says that she ensured the depiction of women was not disrespectful. “The women in the film are portrayed as careless, but not in any other way. In fact, they are depicted as quite smart. What made me comfortable was the way the script was,” she shares, adding that she also had a say in the costumes.

“We spoke a lot with Milap. We made sure the costumes were not vulgar. We paid heed to that as we wanted it to look graceful.”

The actor, seen in Sacred Games and Kandahar (2023), notes that she would like to change one stereotype about sex comedies. “Such films don’t only have to be about men, it can be about women as well. That’s exactly what Mastiii 4 shows.”

(Crisp) Movie Review: MASTIII 4 by FENIL SETA

Mastiii 4 is based on an interesting idea; it could have made for a laugh-a-minute riot. A few jokes are genuinely funny and the film doesn’t bore even for a moment. However, most of the jokes fall flat. What’s saddening is that the makers have copied and pasted a popular joke from Main Tera Hero and also resorted to toilet humour. One such joke is so distasteful that it’ll make one wonder how it even got approved. The music is also not enticing enough. Riteish Deshmukh puts up a sincere performance. Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani go overboard. Elnaaz Norouzi, Ruhi Singh and Shreya Sharma are decent at best. Shaad Randhawa (Virat) is dependable. Tusshar Kapoor (Don Pablo Putinwa) gets to play a funny character, but is let down by the writing; Nishant Singh Malkani (Sid Walia) is passable. All in all, Mastiii 4 is avoidable.

WILL 120 BAHADUR, MASTIII 4 SCORE AT THE BOX OFFICE?

Last week’s De De Pyaar De 2 has underperformed at the box office. Thankfully, it opened better than Ajay Devgn’s previous film, Son Of Sardaar 2, which collected Rs. 7.25 crores. De De Pyaar De 2 collected Rs. 8.25 crores on its release day, and then jumped to Rs. 12 crores and Rs. 13.25 crores on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Sadly, it had a major fall on Monday, earning Rs. 3.75 crores. As expected, due to the offer, it saw a slight increase in the collections, earning Rs. 4.50 crores. The first week collections are expected to be Rs. 47-48 crores. If all goes well, it’ll earn around Rs. 65-70 crores in its lifetime.

This week will see the release of two diametrically opposite films. 120 Bahadur stars Farhan Akhtar in the lead role. This means that this is his first film as a lead in more than 4 years, the last one being Toofaan. This time, Farhan plays the role of Major Shaitan Singh Bhati, who bravely fought the 1962 Indo-China war with a team of just 120 soldiers against thousands of Chinese armymen. The film looks like a quality product. Also, they have shot in real locations and that has added to the authenticity.

However, the songs of the film haven’t worked and it looks like an elite product. The makers held the paid previews on Tuesday, and the response was encouraging. Despite this sampling, the advance hasn’t picked up. If all goes well, 120 Bahadur will open at Rs. 3-4 crores.

Mastiii 4 stars Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani, who have always featured in the previous parts of the franchise as well – Masti (2004), Grand Masti (2013) and Great Grand Masti (2016). This time, they are joined by Ruhii Singh, Shreya Sharma, Elnaaz Norouzi, Natalia Janoszek, Shaad Randhawa and Nishant Singh Malkani, along with Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri. It is directed by Milap Zaveri, who also helmed the surprise Diwali hit, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat.

The trailer of Mastiii 4 is full of naughty and adult jokes. While a section of the audience liked it, many found it offensive and crass. The ticket sales of this film, too, haven't been encouraging. Like 120 Bahadur, it might open at around Rs. 3-4 crores or even lower.

A section of the industry believes that today’s under 30 audience has never really experienced a sex comedy on the big screen. The way this demographic poured into cinemas for Saiyaara showed how hungry they are for bold, youth centric content. Mastiii 4 could tap into a similar curiosity factor, even if it is unlikely to match Saiyaara at the box office. If reports are positive and the buzz builds, the film can spring a surprise from Saturday. In that sense, strong word of mouth will be absolutely vital.

When people clap or whistle, that’s my adrenaline. It’s the spinach to my Popeye-Milap Zaveri

Milap Zaveri discusses why entertainment wins over morality in his cinematic universe

As he gears up for ‘Mastiii 4’, ‘Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat’ director Milap Zaveri discusses why entertainment trumps morality in his cinema
Komal RJ Panchal (MID-DAY; November 14, 2025)

What makes a movie a hit — the box-office reports, the critics’ raving praises, or the masses that throng cinema halls? Filmmaker Milap Zaveri seems to have both the numbers and the people on his side. His film Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, reportedly made on a shoestring budget of Rs 25 crore, may have opened to mixed responses, but the audience gave it a thumbs up, minting over Rs 75 crore within 23 days of its release.

“It was that dark horse that nobody saw coming. It’s become the third biggest hit of the year after Chhaava and Saiyaara,” he smiles.

While Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, starring Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa, resonated strongly across Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, it also sparked debate for allegedly glorifying toxicity. Unfazed, Zaveri says his films are only “meant for entertainment and not [to give] a social message.”

He adds, “If you’ve seen Deewaniyat, the so-called toxicity isn’t rewarded. Harsh’s character had vulnerability and depth — that’s why people connected with him. Full credit goes to Harsh for that.” Having observed the reactions to Kabir Singh (2019) and Animal (2023), Zaveri believes there is a market for such love stories.

Aiming for front-bench energy in his films, the director is known to layer his movies with punchy dialogues. “When people clap or whistle, that’s my adrenaline. It’s the spinach to my Popeye,” he laughs.

Addressing the controversy around the now-viral line from the film, where Bajwa’s character boldly declares that she would sleep with whoever kills Harsh’s character, he explains, “That line was the reason the film got made. It symbolized her strength and desperation in that moment. A woman’s beauty can also be her power — that’s what I wanted to show.”

Now, he has trained his eyes on his next entertainer, Mastiii 4. “Whether you’re 20 or 60 years old, anything that makes people laugh, especially with great music and a bit of naughty humour, will always connect. Mastiii 4 brings back that same madness, energy, and star power that audiences have loved through the years. If, for two hours and fifteen minutes, they forget the world and walk out smiling — that’s all the message I need.”

Vivek Oberoi donates his Ramayana fees for a good cause

‘The universe works on vibrations and how you feel’

Akash Bhatnagar (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 28, 2025)

Actor Vivek Oberoi, who has seen both highs and lows in his two-decade career, is currently in what he calls a “great phase,” with several major projects in hand. He will soon be seen in Mastii 4, plays Vibhishan in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, and has also joined Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s upcoming film Spirit.

“They say the universe works on vibrations and how you feel,” Vivek shares, adding, “When you’re at ease with yourself, not desperate or stressed about your career, things fall into place. I’m relaxed, listening to a lot of scripts, and lucky to choose projects purely out of passion, not compulsion.”

Calling Ramayana “India’s answer to Hollywood epics,” Vivek reveals that he has donated his fee from the film to a cause close to his heart. “I told Namit that I don’t want a penny for this. I want to donate it to a cause I believe in: helping kids with cancer,” he says.

As for Mastiii 4, the actor describes it as a nostalgic reunion. “It’s been 21 years since the first film, and the chemistry with Riteish Deshmukh, Aftab Shivdasani, and Milap Milan Zaveri, who’s directing this one, is still amazing,” he smiles.
