In massy movies, female parts are shabbily written-Regina Cassandra

Vidaamuyarchi actor Regina Cassandra: ‘In massy movies, female parts are shabbily written’

Regina Cassandra opens up on the challenges of starring in a massy film and why Ajith’s Vidaamuyarchi was different

Regina Cassandra has had a great start to the year, with her film Vidaamuyarchi, opposite south superstar Ajith Kumar, hitting theatres this week. We sit down with the actor to discuss her character—an adventurous, thrill-seeking woman who keeps everyone on their toes. Cassandra says filming with Ajith was her biggest motivation for taking on the project.

“This is the first Tamil superstar I’m working with. The journey has been enriching. I trusted director Magizh Thirumeni to write me a character I could do justice to. He was confident I’d be able to pull off the layered role. He cleared all the doubts I had about the script. Usually, in big-budget superstar films, they don’t give you much importance, scenes get cut, and things could go wrong, but my director made me feel that no one else could have played the role but me,” explains Cassandra.

She claims Ajith set a precedent on set with his behaviour. Besides working hard, he treated everyone around him with respect. “He is an inclusive person. Usually, in mainstream, massy movies, they shabbily write female parts. You realize the quality of the writing by seeing how well they write the characters, irrespective of the language. That’s why I trust my directors. However, some directors have let me down. Then I feel detached from whatever I signed up for.”

When asked why she hasn’t been seen much in Hindi cinema, she laughs, saying people feel that way about her in every industry. “I have three films lined up. Two are complete and ready for release, and the third is almost finished,” says Cassandra. Her next film is Jaat, directed by Gopichand Malineni and starring Sunny Deol and Randeep Hooda.

Sidharth Malhotra to play double role in the Hindi remake of Thadam

The actor plays a businessman and a thief, who look identical, in a murder mystery; film is produced by Murad Khetani and goes on floors in May

After Marjaavaan last year, in which he played the larger-than-life Raghu, Sidharth Malhotra is set for more maar-dhaad. Mirror has learnt that the actor has signed another action thriller being produced by Murad Khetani. The yet-untitled film is the official remake of the 2019-Tamil hit Thadam and will go on the floors this May with a start-to-finish schedule.

“Sidharth plays a double role for the first time in his career, a businessman and a small-time thief and gambler always looking to make a quick buck. The film is currently in prep and the team is working towards creating two distinct looks for him,” revealed a source close to the development, adding that the makers are on the lookout for an A-list actress who is expected to be on board within a fortnight.

Thadam, written and directed by Magizh Thirumeni, had a double dose of Arun Vijay and revolved around a murder that results in a cat-and-mouse game between two identical characters and the cops. “The story has plenty of thrills which lend themselves to some interesting chase sequences, something that appealed to Sid instantly, in addition to the challenge of playing a double role,” the source informed.

This will be a second remake for Murad Khetani after Shahid Kapoor-starrer Kabir Singh which was based on the Telugu film, Arjun Reddy. “Thadam is inspired by a real-life story and got a lot of appreciation for its twists and turns which result in an unexpected climax. The team feels it has the potential to appeal to a Hindi-speaking audience,” the source added.

The film will mark the directorial debut of Vardhan Ketkar, who was an assistant director on two Sidharth-starrers, Brothers and Kapoor & Sons. He also worked with Murad on his 2017 comedy, the Anees Bazmee-directed Mubarakan. Sidharth has already wrapped up the Vikram Batra biopic, Shershaah, and will soon kick-off Indra Kumar’s next, also featuring Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh. He will end the year by starting another action-packed film with Bhushan Kumar and Nikkhil Advani as the producers.
